Perfect for a lazy afternoon

Thu, 05 Sep 2013 17:05:47 +0100

When it comes to making a choice from the wine list, this summer we have seen more and more people opting to move away from traditional French wines to more fashionable styles mainly from Australia, New Zealand and Spain, which often not only have the benefit of being more approachable than their French counterparts but are more affordable too.

Treat yourself to a classic fizz

Tue, 03 Sep 2013 11:38:13 +0100

Out with a bang or more likely a pop as this is my last Raise a Glass.

Perfect wine for holiday season

Thu, 15 Aug 2013 17:15:13 +0100

As it is the holiday season I thought I would introduce you to a wine to take your tastebuds to Spain even if you are on a staycation.

Dry and light wine from France

Thu, 18 Jul 2013 17:33:23 +0100

We’re back to the grape this week with a light white. As sweeter varietals seem to be going out of fashion I thought I would look at a nice dry to medium bodied wine – great if you're buying for a sweeter tooth.

A wonderful Lakeland ale

Thu, 11 Jul 2013 16:56:34 +0100

WE have opted for a fine local ale this week - Hawkshead Brewery's award-winning Lakeland Gold.

A great-value bottle for pinot grigio fans

Thu, 27 Jun 2013 17:18:14 +0100

A MEDIUM dry white is the tipple for this week – and one that is scrumptious and wonderfully dry and aromatic with great citrus flavours, hints of spice and a touch of apricot.

A locally-made liqueur treat

Thu, 20 Jun 2013 16:34:45 +0100

Wine for those with a sweet tooth

Thu, 16 May 2013 17:07:37 +0100

TO match my ever growing sweet tooth and love of puddings I couldn't resist a rich velvety dessert wine – so plumped for Elysium Black Muscat, produced by the award-winning Quady winery, which specialises solely in desert wine that includes this rare black skinned Muscat.

A thoroughbred male from Italy

Thu, 09 May 2013 17:19:50 +0100

Pink fizz that's perfect for sunny weather

Thu, 18 Apr 2013 17:27:36 +0100

The sunshine is finally here even if it is in very short bursts! So, if you fancy something a little special, try some salt marsh lamb.

A perfect complement to fish

Thu, 11 Apr 2013 17:25:52 +0100

Hearty food and wine is the order this week but after lots of full bodied reds I had a new fish pie recipe so I settled on a white.

Wonderful local ales

Thu, 04 Apr 2013 17:20:35 +0100

I THOUGHT it was time to change up from the grape to the grain this week, and how better than to sample a local ale from Unsworth's Yard Brewery of Cartmel.

An amazing find from South Africa

Thu, 07 Mar 2013 16:24:07 +0000

Two South American belters for you this week from Chile.

An own-brand wine with fantastic heritage

Thu, 07 Feb 2013 17:30:41 +0000

My wine choice for this week is from Booths new own-brand labelled wine. The range consists of old-world wines from reputable producers but with Booths' own label – and keenly priced from £6.99 to £12.99 a bottle.

Two perfect beers for a winter's night

Thu, 31 Jan 2013 17:48:45 +0000

This week I bring two fantastic beers to the table, as I feel I have been concentrating too much on the grape. They are the Rudgate York Chocolate Stout and Inner and Gunn Rum Finish Amber Beer – both big and bold and guaranteed to warm you up on a cold night.

Bargain for Bordeaux

Thu, 24 Jan 2013 16:39:13 +0000

A real bargain for Bordeaux lovers this week and a keenly priced and scrumptious tasting one too.

A great find from north east Spain

Thu, 17 Jan 2013 17:27:34 +0000

I HAVE a great find for you this week from the Utile Requena area of North East Spain - near the port of Valencia – called the Pasion de Bobal 2010. The Bobal variety is indigenous to this part of Spain and is a deep, dark-skinned grape which has a similar depth to Monestrall (Mouvedre), but is slightly lower in alcohol.

Get over those New Year blues

Thu, 10 Jan 2013 14:22:55 +0000

MY TOP treat for the New Year and to get over those festive blues is a rather fantastic Merlot from South Africa – the Peacock Ridge Label Merlot 2011, from False Bay, available at Windermere and Ambleside wine stores for £9.99 a bottle.

More 'old friends' revisited

Thu, 27 Dec 2012 16:51:05 +0000

Classic favourites from Bordeaux

Thu, 20 Dec 2012 16:43:21 +0000

Interesting Wine Time

Thu, 13 Dec 2012 14:08:01 +0000

This week I bring you two very interesting wines from Wine Time EWGA's shop at Greenlands Farm Village, near Carnforth – and in plenty time for your Christmas and New Year.

Time to find your Christmas wines!

Thu, 29 Nov 2012 14:19:14 +0000

With Christmas ever nearer, people's minds are now turning to what they are going to drink over the festive period. Over the past few weeks I have selected some wines to try, but this week I am going all traditional – meaning looking at France, and in particular, Bordeaux.

Drink this wine, and help the gorillas

Thu, 22 Nov 2012 17:09:13 +0000

A PROPER Italian job for you this week. I stumbled upon this cracker from Western Sicily at Booths in Windermere.
