International soprano joins flute orchestra for Not Just a Christmas concert

CUMBRIA’S flute orchestra, Flutes and Co, presents a family-friendly Not Just a Christmas concert on Sunday, December 10 (3pm) led by musical director, Sue Nicholls. Staged at St Anne’s Church, Ings, the concert will open with an arrangement of Eric Whitacre’s Lux Aurumque. Three local flute players Cathy Goss, Philip Gruar and Colin Blakey, have arranged pieces for the concert and there will be two original flute orchestra compositions Le Chateau Hante (The Haunted Castle) by Avinee and a piece with audience participation Voices of Nagasaki by Will Offermans. One of the many highlights of the concert promises to be an arrangement of Verdi’s Agnus Dei from the Requiem where the flute orchestra will be joined by international soprano soloist, Jane Irwin. Christmas favourites including Troika and Walking in the Air will be performed in the second half.

THE Joy Singers of Venice bring a Christmas vibe to Kendal's Brewery Arts Centre on Sunday, November 26 (2pm) with a repertoire that ranges from classic to contemporary gospel and from jazz to funk and soul. Among the highly regarded Italian choir's ranks is Catherine Swain, deputy head of an international school at Mirano, near Venice. Originally from Ulverston, Catherine attended Ulverston Victoria High School and lived in the town until she left for university in Leeds. After graduating she spent many years in education before moving to Venice 14 years ago. Works by Benjamin Britten are centrepiece of choral concert

KENDAL South Choir’s next concert features a selection of works by Benjamin Britten, including Rejoice in the Lamb based on Christopher Smart’s poem Jubilate Agno. Staged at Kendal's St Thomas’s Church, on Saturday, November 25 (7.30pm), also in the popular choir's programme is the seasonal favourite A Ceremony of Carols. Usually performed by women’s voices only, this arrangement is for four part choir with organ and harp accompaniment. The remainder of the evening comprises Britten’s Festival Te Deum and Jubilate Deo. Under the expert direction of Don Gillthorpe, the choir will be accompanied by AnnaKate Pearson on harp and Adrian Self on the organ. Tickets are available from Made in Cumbria, Kendal, choir members or at the door.

THIS year’s Levens Choir autumn tour takes musical director Ian Jones and his excellent ensemble across country to Norfolk and the splendours of Southwell Minster and Norwich Cathedral. As the prelude to their tuneful trip, they perform at Cartmel Priory on Saturday, October 21 (7.30pm) with guest singers joining the choir to rehearse and perform the central work in the concert: Dvorak’s incredibly lyrical and melodic Mass in D.
