I'm not buying it. I like what we're doing in-house. The consistently good teams in the nfl draft to make there team better, sign back depth, and don't make big free agent splashes. We are going with that system and it's going to work.

You're right in that Austin might get the most snaps as a slot receiver, but he had 72 carries last year and I would love to see him in the Bengals backfield. It's rumored the Bengals have some legitimate interest in Austin and are bringing him in for a visit. Randle, I think, would be a good consolation prize.

Great article bill. I want to argue with you but I can't. I don't think anyone that hasn't been able to wash away the memories of t.o and Antonio Bryant can. To be fair I liked both of those signings at the time for the exact same reasons that people are complaining about now. The Bengals are a good team that needs those few pieces to be a great team. Having said that I can't argue with lewis in that more experience doesn't always equate to a better player. If sanu and Hawkins combined could give us chars second year numbers I would sign for that right now. Your correct in that patience is key right now. The less they do now is the more they can do in the draft. I will still argue however that giving up a 1st and a third for darelle revis would be a good move to help put this team over the top.

I agree that brown would have been a better signing than Nugent. I don't think the Bengals make the playoffs if Nugent had to attempt to make the same kick that brown made in Pittsburgh. Brown received an opportunity and made the most of it when the pressure was on. That's the kind of kicker this team needs.

The Nugent signing is a joke. My guess is that he was the cheaper route. He missed a lot of kicks last year and its not like Brown didn't earn the job. He was better on kickoffs too than Nugent. I'm really surprised and disappointed by Nugent's signing.

You sound a little bitter at Spikes for leaving. Given all the losing he went through, I can't blame him. I know how angry I was at Mike Brown then (and for a long time after). I'm not looking for Spikes to start, but to back up and to mentor. Maybe it's easier for me to consider the option because I am doubtful that the team will re-sign Howard to a position that they seem to really want to give to Maualuga.

Comment on Options At Backup Quarterback by WHO DEstiny

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 04:41:35 +0000

Go with Bruce. He knows the offense, he won't be any more expensive, I never got a whiff of a sense that he was unhappy or uncomfortable here. I would hate to see the team bring in someone like Jackson or Moore new to the system. They would be a bit of a talent upgrade, but not a huge one - I think the lack of experience in our offense with our receivers would negate that advantage. Dalton is way too young to pair solely with a rookie or a developmental project a la Robinson. This team has historicaly done the best with a veteran backup (Kitna, Gradkowski)

Comment on Bring Takeo Home by WHO DEstiny

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 04:31:32 +0000

Agree. The Spikes ship has sailed. The only way I envision him coming back is a mid-season signing in the event of injuries (a-la crocker). Put another way: I'd rather have Maualuga back.

Comment on Bring Takeo Home by dan cyriacks

Fri, 08 Mar 2013 01:36:04 +0000

Great article bad idea. How is it good karma to bring back a guy who didn't buy in to lewis's program from day one? Just my opinion but I'd rather keep Howard. The spikes ship has sailed. If we are going to sign an aging linebacker, sign someone with a winning track record to bring that leadership to a young Bengal team not a player looking to hitch his wagon for a chance at a playoff appearance.

Comment on Options At Backup Quarterback by dan cyriacks

Thu, 07 Mar 2013 19:02:22 +0000

I like Gradkowski and I completely agree that if Dalton went down I wouldn't feel like the season was neccessarily over with Bruce taking over. Just want to throw another name out there though. If the bills end up releasing Ryan fitzpatrick, he might be another good possibility to bring back. He has starting experience, is a smart guy, and earned a starting QB job with how he played for us previously. Just to be clear I'm not one of the people calling for.a new QB and anyone who is apparently doesn't remember how bad it was not having one nearly as good as Dalton. He's not perfect and he does have a lot to improve on but he's 2 years in and we need to give the guy a legitimate chance.

Comment on A Trade Would Be Nice by dan cyriacks

Fri, 01 Mar 2013 01:04:53 +0000

This might sound a little nuts in the land of Mike Brown's wallet but with the over abundance of picks that we have this draft why couldn't we at least approach the jets about the possibility of a trade for darelle revis? I know the Bengals would have to pay him what he wants if they acquired him but they have the most cap room in the league. I also know that the company line has been "we have to sign our own players" which I agree with to a point but could you imagine our defense with hall and revis in the same defensive backfield? This team is good enough to make the playoffs as currently constructed but if they seriously want to get over that playoff win hump, they need to make a legitimate move to do so and acquiring Revis would be it.

Wed, 06 Feb 2013 06:22:04 +0000

As long as there has been football, different offenses have developed. And the defenses have also learned to counter the new threats. So let some new ideas emerge and give it a try. Each team will make the adjustments necessary, and as long as they play football, I am all for it. I get more anxious watching the low scoring games then the high scoring ones. So botom line, I don't think it will make a big difference one way or the other.

I couldn't agree more. I hate both teams and am glad the 2012-13 season is now officially in the books. Bye bye Ray! Party hard, I hope you don't kill too many people tonight. moving forward: 2013-14 early AFC predictions (hours after the end of the 2013 super bowl): The ELITE teams: HOU, NE, BALT, DEN (*there are your preseason near unanimous picks for division champs next year) The VERY GOOD but not quite elite teams: IND, CIN, +/- PIT The GOOD to MEDIOCRE tier: SD, MIA, +/- PIT, +/- TEN, +/- CLE, +/- BUF The DISASTER tier: OAK, KC, JAX, NYJ, +/- TEN, +/- CLE, +/- BUF My thoughts: AFCW: DEN will have best record. Peyton will tear thru that weak-ass division. SD will be about .500, could compete for wild card. KC will rebuild. OAK is an absolute mess. AFCE: NE will win division easily. BUF will compete for wild card but probably won't make it. MiA will be just shy of 0.500. NYJ will wish they fired Ryan this year. AFCS: Houston and IND are close, they probably split head-to-head and the division race is close. I think HOU ultimately wins out. IND will be a wild card. TEN will struggle again and basically tread water. Don't draft C. Johnson in fantasy ball. JAX rebuilds. AFCN: Got to give BAL the edge in the division b/c they just won the super bowl but hard to say how they do without Ray Ray. They won't get a first-round bye (just like this year). CIN should do better next year than this year as so many guys will be playing for contracts. Huge getting both coordinators back. The bar is set high in the 'Nati. CIN could take the division - they almost did this year despite some bad losses early on. I look for CIN to be much more consistent this coming year. Hard to imagine PIT struggling again next year but it could very well happen. Age is not being kind to the Steelers. I think they miss the playoffs again. CLE will actually improve, however you can improve in the AFCN and still finish last. I guess at the end of the day, I don't see next years' playoff field looking much different than this years. AFCE: 1 team, NE AFCW: 1 team, DEN AFCN: 2 teams, BAL and CIN. BAL is the early favorite for division champ, but I could certainly see CIN taking it. AFCS: 2 teams, HOU and IND. I can't see IND knocking of HOU, at least not yet anyway. Next teams out of playoffs: BUF, SD, MIA

Once again, I totally agree with you. Bottom line? Gresham is a wuss. He's afraid of contact, and catching the ball while getting hit is what being a top-notch TE is all about. I don't think he is one, and if he gets off to another slow start, the Bengals need to start getting Charles in as the first-team TE to see what they have so they can cut bait on Gresham before they give him more dollars they'll just regret.

NE nauseates me as much of the thought of Ben Roethlisberger dating my sister. (Thank God she is smarter than that!) But picking between the Pats or the Ravens is like choosing between syphilis or anthrax. Can they both lose? And the 49ers, well, let's just say that forgiveness isn't one of my strong suits. So I'm left with Atlanta. Besides, it would be good to see someone new get there. It would be just their second trip to the big game. And it just might make it feel more like the Bengals could be there again soon.

I do NOT want Maualuga anywhere near PBS. That ship has sailed, sunk, and reefed. I like the idea of Ellerbe, but that keeps Burfict outside. I want him to move to the middle with his on-field persona and field coverage. I see the Bengals drafting a LB high this year. They love UGA players and why not? they usually pan out (A.J. Green, Robert Geathers, Geno Atkins, Clint Boling) so maybe Alec Ogletree?

I would have to say I am with you on pretty much every point, what the heck happened to Jason Allen anyway? I really think we need to upgrade at RB and backup QB, if Andy takes a notion to playing "poorly" then at least you can throw someone in who is a change of pace maybe. Esiason was benched for playing "poorly" and came back to play much better, Andy needs to understand that missing it by one foot or twenty feet is still missing it.

I'm with, esp in regards to the supporting cast. Thrilled to know I'm not the only one who noticed that the line went to shit when Cook returned. Sure hope Robinson takes that job from him moving fwd - much more athletic than Cook. Also, Gresham is totally overrated. He's never been, nor never will be, a weapon like the league's top TEs. He has iffy hands, runs very stiffly and is afraid of contact. Here's hoping Orson Charles turns into a weapon and Sanu becomes the guy he looked like he was becoming before getting hurt. And, finally, love your PS: Maualuga has GOT to go, he's horrendous. The more I thought about the Texans game, the more I thought Dalton was strung out to dry by an awful game plan, crappy O-line, and timid TE. And Maualuga just torpedoed the defense all day.

So this is a crazy idea I think would be smart for the Browns. No joke pick up Tebow. The AFC North has been some form or another of hard nose running, hard fought yard league. And if you could get Tebow, Cribbs and Richardson working out of some sort of wildcat/option setup it would could be deadly. This fixes a few problems (A) Cribbs isn't a true wide receiver and his experience at QB/return style running would make this viable (B) Tebow wouldn't have to throw the deep ball and in an emergency he could drop it to Little and let him dance up field. (C) less need to fix hole ridden O-line when the ball is in motion from the get go. Never happen don't want it to. I like where the Browns are. I Know this is bengals zone but After talking to father-in-law browns fan a few weeks ago. Here's hopping the Bengals get on the stick and start signing the right players back.

Andy Dalton was HORRIBLE, and so was REY, that is the whole game. Yeah, Gresham needs to catch at least two of those, but Andy was short on a touchdown to Marvin Jones and then long to AJ?? Cmon, I know he has "moxie" but I complained about this all year, not sure if he is the answer. And we need a young nasty safety for sure, and how many years we gonna get decent play from Newman, Pacman and Clements?? Need a young corner, Middle linebacker, Running back, and possible new OC, if this guy cannot figure out what is working during the game. I thought we would lose this game, but we had every chance to win and blew it!!

Step back from the ledge, fellow Who Dey faithful- I am as thoroughly disgusted by the play yesterday as you all are. However, I am not on board with getting rid of ML. 1. First of all it doesn't matter - he isn't going anywhere. No way Mikey Boy jettisons ML at this point. 3 playoffs in 4 years - remember, Mikey won't even consider firing anybody until they've gone 2-14 at least 3 years in a row. And if you give us a "tease" of a season - something like 7 or 8 wins one year - make that 5 years of suckitude before you're canned. You heard it here first - ML will leave this team on his own accord, when he's ready. 2. And secondly - do you really trust Mikey to pick another coach who's better???? You have to think not only about how ML has done, but not just anyone can do well under Mikey. I think ML has figured out how to push Mikey's buttons - i.e. when he wants to do something stupid (i.e. draft Gabbert), convince him to do the right thing (draft Dalton) but make him think that it was his idea to change his mind in the first place..... At any rate, we will clearly see some changes in leadership next year - There is no conceivable way Zimmer will not get a HC job this off season. I think it is laughable that Gruden is getting interviews - his resume is way too thin to be a HC in this league. And given the offensive gameplan and play against the Texans - I can't imagine him getting a HC gig now. Don't get me wrong - I'd much rather have Zimmer back vs. Gruden - Even with Maualuga mailing it in, I still pin this loss squarely on the offense. Offseason checklist: OFFENSE We are fine at: QB WR We desperately need: OL RB help - I like BJGE but he cannot carry the load. We missed Scott this year more than I thought we would I'm not sure about: TE (I was big on Gresham last year - thought he'd really break through this year, but hasn't. Last night was painful to watch) DEFENSE We are fine at: CB Safeties DE DL We desperately need: LB's!!!!!!! SPECIAL TEAMS: Nugent's contract is up I believe but as Brown showed us good kicking should never be hard to find Returns were OK. WHO DEY!!!!

This article is excellent. Pardon me as I adjust my bengal's tin foil hat. I would argue this game was intentionally thrown away by the offense. Seriously it looked suspicious as Green never saw a pass in the first half. No consistant handoffs to Ellis. Gresham dropping the ball while being open near the 50. Cook at center again while Robinson earmed the bench. Was the mafia at work behind the scenes? Does the NFL hate this team so bad that they have told Gruden he best not score? LOL. Well let me now remove my tin cap and admit the truth: There is no mob or conspiracy involved. The Bengals coaching staff are just as stupid as the game dictated. The plan to get everybody involved was activated just as this article explains in brief but entertaining detail. I just can't believe this coach is returning. Back to back playoffs are nice but any last hope I had for Lewis is shattered.

I'm excited as heck and think this team will win on Saturday. I can't help but see the media still taking shots at this team and wanting them out as quickly as possible. I'm sure the announcers will be one-sided again. Referee calls will favor the home team. Analysts will not pick the Bengals. While we have blow-out high TV rating locally in SW Ohio, I'm sure no one else cares about the Marvin Lewis powerhouse. Two division championships and the playoff 4 out of 8 years and the national media see us a micro-step over the Chiefs and the Bills. I don't care. It's a great team. I will watch to the end. In Marvin We Trust. More great drafts to come. Maybe a SuperBowl this year.

Great article. I might reread it that's how fired up it has me. I really think this team has a chance to do some damage in the playoffs no matter who we play first. Just need to come out of Sunday healthy.

NFL.COM and ESPN simply dismissed the whole game and blamed the loss on Rothlisberger, who they'd like to take down a notch and not call an elite quarterback. They refuse to recognize any great players on the team and would like the Bengals to sink into the abyss so they can continue to talk about the East and West coast teams (and the Cowboys.) Nothing new, same old stuff we've come to expect. Keep bringing the hate. thanks

just shut up already Cribbs...why do you care if the Browns rebuild next year, you're not gonna be on the team. You told the fans to "eff" of last week. All you are good for is returning the ball but you havent had a kick return TD in three year. Should of learned how to play WR instead of running your damn mouth!!!

I couldn't agree with you more Bruce. All I heard this week was that the Bengals have never been able to win the bi. Game. How the ravens and the steelers were the big brothers of the AFC north. and how the Bengals would need to beat them to get any respect. Well on Sunday they went into Pittsburgh and did it. Any die hard Bengal fan knows how hard it has been season after season. I have never been more proud of being a fan of this team than I was on Sunday. The best part was how the team reacted after the game. They still have work to do and they know it. And for that alone they deserve respect. Great article.

As usual, the Bengals get no credit or love from the media after qualifying for the playoffs for the 4th time in 8 years. (It would have been 5 out of 8 if Shayne Graham doesn't choke a 35-yarder.) Everyone (except for CBS) picks them to lose each week. The national media can't wait for the next piece bad press to lump it on to something 6 years ago. Life as a Bengal fan: anonymous/invisible like the media sees all Marvin Lewis teams. Thanks for the story. They're are hard to find.

Yesterday's game was fun nominal from a defensive standpoint. The Cincinnati Bengals kept the Steelers from getting first downs let alone scoring. This team plays in perhaps the most difficult division in the AFC. Some argued that it's the most competitive in the NFL period. That means we are not intimidated anymore from Tom Brady in Foxboro then we are Ben Roethlisberger in Pittsburgh. Marvin Lewis needs to use more common coaching sense rather than a gambler's instinct. Either way the Bengals won and let's get ready to win our first playoff game in many years.

Yesterday's win was huge on so many levels. The one thing that this team kept saying over and over was that they had nothing to do with the teams from the past. I think that attitude will serve them well as they go into the postseason. My biggest concern before yesterday's game was the coaching and Marvin lewis did nothing to alleviate those concerns yesterday. He went for it on 4th and 22 seriously that happened. There's being aggressive and then there's being careless and stupid he's been coaching long enough to know the difference. I hope he learned something yesterday otherwise they will just repeat last season's result. One thing is certain we EARNED respect yesterday

Your article hit it right on the head. It's time for this team to step up and take this organization to a place it hasn't been to in a very long time. Go into Pittsburgh, punch the Steelers right in the mouth and earn their way into the playoffs. Both the ravens and Steelers have been the.big brothers in this division for too long. It's time for a change. Lewis better have them ready for this game because its that important. Otherwise they will continue to be looked at as a talented team who couldn't win the big one when they needed to.

I think jay gruden and mike Zimmer have been godsends for this teami wouldn't trade them for any coordinators in the league. Marvin was brought here to change the culture and instill discipline and he has done that. But now its time to take the next step and with some of the in game decisions he's made I don't know if he's the coach to do it.

no doubt, but this is also on the coordinators. Very rarely is it Marvins fault that the play call comes in late or the wrong players are on the field. I am not apologizing for Marvin, but I am not giving a pass to the coordinators.

Those play calls are on Jay Gruden. I agree they should have stayed with the hot hand, but how many times have fans complained that the Bengals got too conservative with the Run, Run pass plays at the end of the game?
