Gitte Lee : The Art of Personal Style

2011-12-14T11:31:35.108-08:00

I am back in London finishing up some projects and I had the honor of meeting with my new friend Gitte Lee again. Gitte is one of the most charming and elegant women I have ever met. She has a great instinct about style and how to enjoy life and she shared some of her secrets with me.Gitte Lee modeled in London over 50 years ago and now is returning to the fashion spotlight. Expect some exciting

Lovely mix-n-match

2011-12-14T11:31:35.108-08:00

I wasn't able to catch the name or style info for this lovely girl, but I had to post her pic because I think she's sooo cute, and I love her mix-n-match look. It's so fun and easy.

i will never get tired of this collection

2011-12-14T11:31:35.108-08:00

To continue yesterday's post on Marc Jacob's Fall collection, the campaign came out these past couple weeks and only reinforces the sense of nostalgia I got from the show. As for the first shot, well, that kind of carpet-wallpaper-furniture combo just brings a certain sentimentality to the already wistful shimmery bow dress and long brown skirt. The last two remind me of the part of childhood

Maxi Dress, Maxi Smile

Personality

2011-12-14T11:31:35.108-08:00

Vanessa's ladylike look is fun, full of delicious details and blooming with personality. Her straw boater and vintage handbag are totally enviable, and her woven sandals are a really nice touch.

Style Communication

2011-12-14T11:31:35.109-08:00

This smartly dressed man was waiting for the bus as I was walking down the hill to The Vatican. He only spoke French, but seemed happy to pose for a quick photo!

nostalgia by marc jacobs

2011-12-14T11:31:35.109-08:00

Isn't it strange how differently you can see a collection after experiencing something completely independent of anything having to do with the collection itself? Rereading my review of Marc Jacobs Fall 2010 I wrote the night of the show, it's not that I necessarily disagree, but as I now try and preserve memories from the first 14 years of my life, saving anecdotes from old play dates and

The Denim Jacket

2011-12-14T11:31:35.109-08:00

I am sure we all have that one item in our closets we always run to when our outfits feel like they're lacking something. For me, it's my Levi denim jacket. I've collected quite a few of them, but this one in particular is customized! I had it taken in and altered, so that it'd fit me in the arms and underarms, but still have that sort of baggy shape to it.  Worn with Topshop lace-up trousers,

Advanced Style On The Go In Italy: A Colorful Summer

2011-12-14T11:31:35.109-08:00

Its a Summer full of color for Italian women and Advanced Style seems to be at it's best in floral and brilliant abstract patterns. I have a lot of photos to come, but wanted to brighten up your Summer days with this colorful post!

Cropped version II

2011-12-14T11:31:35.109-08:00

I love Vanna's look. Her Zara top is so inspiring, a cropped top is definitely on my must radar. Definitely with a high-waist bottom of some sort. Also ideal for the next few months, her silky, aubergine Top Shop short-shorts are divine. And loving her handmade multi-strap sandals.

Advanced Style On The Go In Roma: Men's Edition

2011-12-14T11:31:35.109-08:00

I have been running around Europe and I've finally arrived in beautiful Roma. After a delicious cup of gelato I hit the streets looking for Advanced Style. As I was walking around I noticed how beautifully the older men in rome dressed, even in very hot weather. Here are a few shots of Rome's well dressed men on the go and don't worry the ladies of rome will get their time to shine as well.

lace and suede

2011-12-14T11:31:35.110-08:00

Here's another favorite lace look of mine. I love how Victoria, of Stiletterne, pairs this excellent vintage skirt with this adorable suede bomber. The skirt is brilliant. Its weight is perfect- not too transparent not too heavy. I also love that she layers it over this black bodysuit. So discrete. And I also love her bag. I have to find some more mini-vintage handbags with long shoulder straps.

Back in Liguria

2011-12-14T11:31:35.110-08:00

Although we were having an amazing time in St. Moritz, my family and I decided that we would head back across the border and visit our best friends in Santa Margherita, Ligure. Santa, as my Milanese friends call the seaside town is about a 15 minute drive from Portofino. The image above is the view from our room.I love sitting in front of the rose and rosemary bushes in my friend's garden. The

Memory Dress

2011-12-14T11:31:35.110-08:00

This vintage taffeta dress is one of my favorite dresses ever, but it's difficult to wear without looking like a grandma (even though I secretly love dressing like elderly women sometimes). I bought it in a boutique in Burbank and it was extremely marked down because it has a tear by the side zipper.... I think the tear makes it that much more special though!Worn with Prada heels and my dad's

Time Out London Presents Advanced Style

2011-12-14T11:31:35.110-08:00

I'm usually the man behind the camera, but Time Out London shot me for their current issue. Look in next week's issue for my photographs and short interviews of some of London's best Advanced Stylistas.

chic-n-easy

2011-12-14T11:31:35.111-08:00

Silvia's outfit is the kind of look that I would love to just to throw on. It's easy, it's chic. But I guess that's precisely the beauty of an Alaïa dress- designed to make women look chic in an effortless way, and the wit of anything Comme des Garçon- her cropped trench is the perfect touch of sporty.

Olivia, before and after Valentino Haute Couture

2011-12-14T11:31:35.111-08:00

Olivia Palermo in Valentino Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear before and after the houses' Fall 2010 Haute Couture show. So glamorous!

Origami

2011-12-14T11:31:35.111-08:00

Lately I've found myself loving heart-shaped bustier dresses, so it was a really sweet surprise when I received this dress from Plastic Island...What I love most about this dress is that has this incredibly structured origami detail on the side, almost like a fin!Worn with a silk blouse, Balenciaga platform sandals, and Jil Sander mirrored shades.Thank you Rachel for my Plastic Island dress! XX

Hey Vika!

2011-12-14T11:31:35.111-08:00

That Vika, she really knows how to stand out in a crowd. She shines in this bold maxi-dress. The print is commanding!Update! Thanks to Mashinka, this lovely dress is courtesy of the Russian fashion brand Nina Donis' Fall 2010 collection.

"diamonds are forever"

2011-12-14T11:31:35.111-08:00

Whenever I see these Prada Spring/Summer 2010 chandelier sandals the song "Diamonds are Forever" always comes to mind. It's definitely all the bling. I love the way Aurora pairs them with this intense green shift; the intense tone makes the sandals pop even more, if that is possible. And I love that she and other stylish women have been wearing them, considering they are ballroom worthy, around

Take Notes from This "Very Old Grandmother"

2011-12-14T11:31:35.112-08:00

I haven't been able to post as much as I would like, as I have been doing a bit of travelling through Europe. I am very excited about my next stop in Rome, where I know I'll find some great Advanced Style. The woman above, Rita, is one of the most amazing women I met while shooting in London. She writes here very own blog called VeryOldGrandmother.com where she shares tips on how to stay young

Nature

2011-12-14T11:31:35.112-08:00

I know, I know, I'm pushing it with these two images. I shot the one of Frida after the Christian Dior Fall 2010 Haute Couture show, and the other one yesterday in front of the lake at St. Moritz. But aren't you floored by the striking similarities of the color palette? Nature never ceases to amaze me. Neither does fashion. Not on the same level of course, and we are of course influenced by the

Cinderella

2011-12-14T11:31:35.112-08:00

I spotted this 50's prom dress at a random vintage store on Sunset Boulevard a long time ago,. I fell in love with it, but the problem was that it was way too big and way too long. I ended up taking it in and making it shorter and now it is easily one of my favorite princess dresses!Worn with vintage jewelry (love those fancy crystal earrings) and L.A.M.B shoes.XX

Utterly Adorable

2011-12-14T11:31:35.112-08:00

I love Wish Teoh's outfit for a what feels like a billion reasons- even though she's only wearing four items. But the four pieces are fantastic:Breton stripe long sleeve t-shirt- Love!Pastel trousers with diagonal stripe waistband- Adore!Silver and white Church's brogues- Super Want!Mini-bag with long shoulder strap in cobalt blue- Uhh! The girl has captured my heart! This is effortlessly cool!

Denim and the mountain

2011-12-14T11:31:35.112-08:00

O.K. I know that denim has pretty much been an obsession for me this summer. But I promise you that it is totally a coincidence that I follow up my post about Giulia with this image of me. You see, to spare my darling child from the sweltering heat in Milan, I relocated us to St. Moritz for a week. And what did I pack for our getaway? Three denim shirts and five pairs of jeans which I will rotate

aaah-mazing

2011-12-14T11:31:35.113-08:00

Gosh, how much do I love Giulia's look? Where do I start? The turban? Or, the denim shirt layered over a delicate summer dress and cinched with a woven leather belt? The color palette? The mix of casual and elegant? There is so much to admire. Giulia, designer of the accessories line Madame Framboise, really inspires me.

Forever Shop at Selfridges Department Store

2011-12-14T11:31:35.113-08:00

My project for Selfridges Department Store is now officially installed in the "Forever Shop." I had a great time shooting Advanced Style in London and met some of the most incredible people. Here are some shots of the project from start to finish including one of the amazing ladies I met Rita Marcus, next to her photo. Check out her wonderful blog http://www.veryoldgrandmother.com and some

London Vintage

2011-12-14T11:31:35.113-08:00

The fellow above was one of the coolest guys I saw walking around London. He likes to dress completely in vintage and he looks great doing it!*a little note from the cheap seats here in NYC:Dear Ari: Thank you for finding me my new boyfriend! This man is divine.

La Dolce Vita

2011-12-14T11:31:35.113-08:00

Spending time with Hanneli last week for the Haute Couture collections was a lovely treat. This morning I was looking through some pics that I snapped of her and came across this white and cream look. She looks so fresh, totally inspiring on a sultry day like the one we are experiencing here in Milan- it's 34°C/93°F outside. Uffffa!

A London Lady

2011-12-14T11:31:35.113-08:00

When I was a little boy my grandma and I would lie and bed and watch My Fair Lady together. I imagined there would be ladies dressed up like Eliza Doolittle on every London street corner. I ran into this wonderful woman right near Selfridges department store and instantly thought of the great times shared with my grandmother, watching movies and sharing stories. Do you guys have any special

2011-12-14T11:31:35.114-08:00

Please excuse me for the lack of updates this whole week, I decided to enjoy some time off from the internet world after coming back from Hawaii.Anyway, lately I've been experimenting a lot with different lip colors and most of them don't really suit my skin tone... I am in love with the lipstick I'm wearing in these photos though! It's called Crush by Sephora.Wearing vintage sequined blouse from

baby lace

2011-12-14T11:31:35.114-08:00

From the runway to the pavé and cobble stone streets of Milan and Paris, lace proved that it is not to be taken delicately this season. ADR, Caroline, Shala, and the adorably preggers Miroslava Duma are a testament to its allure. Miroslava is radiant in this black multi-tiered mini. Also, love her straw hat and beaded headband combo. Very sweet.

An open letter to Seventeen Magazine, also, WHY ARE YOU UGLY WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU

2011-12-14T11:31:35.114-08:00

I started writing an email to Seventeen about this, but then at the suggestion of a tweeter, figured it would have more power if I just posted it here. Commenters, please add your two cents! I would also like to direct you to this awesome blog, The Seventeen Magazine Project, a documentation of one girl's experience living under the magazine's advice for a month.(Bottom right hand corner.)Dear

London's Finest

2011-12-14T11:31:35.114-08:00

I am having the most splendid time in London running around and meeting with some fabulous ladies and gentleman, from advanced bloggers and models to a Baron and a women who worked with the famous code cracking Enigma machine during World War II. They have welcomed me into their hearts and their homes and I am enjoying every moment of it.The elegant women above was one of the first stylish

Spotlight on

2011-12-14T11:31:35.115-08:00

Last month I had the huge pleasure of spending the day with Vogue.it and filming an interview for their Vogue Black site. We played dress up at my apartment, had lunch together at biancopensare, did a little shopping at Antonioli, and visited my favorite store Understate. Click here to check out the video. And many thanks to Beniamino, Barbara and Sandro for a terrific day.

stuff about fashion blogging, again, again

2011-12-14T11:31:35.115-08:00

(The first two.)So I just watched Jefferson Hack's interview with Imran Amed of the Business of Fashion for the thousandth time, because it makes me very happy, and very optimistic about this digital age, which is so big that it's beyond any of us and we have no clue what to do with it, and about fashion in general.Don't you love this guy? I like how, among many other things, he said magazines

"go 'head, baby"

2011-12-14T11:31:35.115-08:00

Do you know the LL Cool J song "Jingling Baby", the chorus of which is "go 'head, baby"? Well the song popped into my head last Wednesday when I spotted Shala arriving at the Valentino Fall 2010 couture show. Looking stunning as always in a Valentino mini, she was jingling along in a breathtaking pair of Azzedine Alaïa python sandals with multiple tiers of bells.

All in the Family: Eyewear Inspiration

2011-12-14T11:31:35.115-08:00

Part of what I'm doing to keep busy while Ari's away with the staff camera in London (so jealous!) is reading all your submissions. Each of your letters are encouraging me to find more people with "Advanced Style" and to report about them for you. I'm so happy to be reading your letters, finding out what sort of diverse things inspired you as you developed your sense of style, and what references

Love.

2011-12-14T11:31:35.115-08:00

I saw Courtney Love perform at a party last September, and since Hole became my favorite band, I’ve regretted not familiarizing myself with it before that night, which I could’ve made much more special. Still, I don’t think I could’ve gotten attached to Hole at that time the same way I am now. At some point during the second half of 8th grade, I became sadder and angrier; to

Blood Orange

2011-12-14T11:31:35.116-08:00

I love monochromatic silk, especially in intense shades like photographer Alexia Niedzielski's look. Last night I wore a raspberry short/racer tank combo for a sushi dinner. The look never fails to tickle my color fancy because of its fluidity. When you move for instance, it looks as if you are being poured into a crystal highball. Your color rolling elegantly against the walls of the glass.

Advanced Style In Action

2011-12-14T11:31:35.116-08:00

My dad and I met beautiful 89 year old Regine today, while walking around Chelsea. Dad has been taking part in the photo hunting and was a great assistant today, in fact he took the great clip above. Regine let me know that elders, as opposed to having one foot in the grave, are up coming. I full-heartedly agree, don't you?

"Love" and admiration

2011-12-14T11:31:35.116-08:00

Some of the most amazing stylists on the face of the planet, I greatly admire the talent of team Love. I also admire the level of camaraderie that they share. Their giggles and laughter always make me smile (you know I'm a sucker for happy moments). Thus, snapping images of them has become quite a treat for me during fashion week. Here are a few of my favorite pics from recent fashion

Julie's pistachio green H&M tulip-style dress is the kind of dress that I would wear forever, or at least until it fell apart- which is often the case with my favorite dresses. There are so many pluses about this stunner: it's so chic, has incredible draping, is a perfect length and is perfect for all occasions. It's perfect to wear during the day as Julie so stylishly demonstrates, with

With love from Paraggi

2011-12-14T11:31:35.122-08:00

Good morning! Just wanted to send you a quick hello. School's out for my most beloved creature/almost three-year-old, and thus, our summer journey of bite size proportion is underway. Our first stop this season is Paraggi to visit our very dear friends. We arrived yesterday afternoon, hit the beach right away, indulged in tons of focaccia, and stayed up really late (9:30p.m.) giggling. What love!

Shades of Blue

[Photos & Text: Ari Seth Cohen]Every time I get my haircut on Astor Place I see this lady walking by. She always wears the most charming outfits and accessories and I love her blue tinted frames.

I'm pretty sure you can tell from my blog that my eyes are drawn to pieces with any type of beautiful detailing, but lately I've been really into patterns... the bolder, the better! This silk jacket is vintage Saks Fifth Avenue, I love the colors and the silhouette!Wearing a Topshop bustle skirt, Givenchy heels, Super sunglasses, vintage jewelry, and nude python Coach clutch.

[Photos: Ari Seth Cohen, Text: Maayan Zilberman]With just a week to go before Ari heads "across the pond" to London to set up the in-store Advanced Style project at Selfridge's, we're doing anything we can to endure the heat and humidity while meeting folks with Advanced Style on the streets of New York City.Just a few days ago I joked about leaving the house in nothing but a swimsuit, then it

Surprise

2011-12-14T11:31:35.123-08:00

I knew it had to be something good when Tommy signaled me from across the street outside the John Varvatos men's Spring 2011 runway show. But I had no idea that it would be Frida Gustavsson good. Taking her picture was a lovely treat at the end of a long, cold and wet day.

toe-ronto. GET IT? TOE? (i don't know either. it's late, okay?)

2011-12-14T11:31:35.123-08:00

IdeaCity, which I attended last week, was really ridiculously inspiring. I dunno when the talks will all be up but maybe then I'll post a few favorites and my own. Because it was REALLY RIDICULOUSLY INSPIRING.My regret with my talk was that it was so off the cuff -- I wish I'd spent more time figuring out what I wanted to say, because some people said it seemed like I wanted to take over Sassy or

It's so beautiful and classic and will be iconic and plastered on my walls.(Okay, so not the most insightful or critical commentary, but I have been writing at Jezebel all day and I am tired, dammit. Camouflage

2011-12-14T11:31:35.124-08:00

Camouflage is the new black. O.k., maybe not the new black, but definitely a favorite among stylish men like Josh Peskowitz (above) and Nickelson Wooster (below). Mr. Peskowitz is the Style Editor at Esquire.com and Mr. Wooster is the Men's Fashion Director at Neiman Marcus. Mr. Wooster is wearing Michael Bastian. Black or camouflage, I'm a fan of both looks.

Summer Heat, Keeping Cool: Advice On How To Stay Cool From Broadway Star George Mann

2011-12-14T11:31:35.124-08:00

[Photos: Ari Seth Cohen, Text: Maayan Zilberman]Ari and I were walking after work yesterday and kvetching about the heat, as if it were our first summer EVER in New York City. Being it my 16th summer in this sweltering mess, I thought it about time to get some advice from our elders on how to make it through the season. Our biggest question is how to look chic while covered up. I'm always two

Style With A Cane

2011-12-14T11:31:35.124-08:00

One of the reasons I started Advanced Style is because I felt that there was a lack of positive and inspiring images of older people in media and advertising. In the last two years I have seen a growing awareness and coverage of seniors in campaigns, on the runway, and on TV. The folks that I meet while walking around New York inspire me to live life to the fullest and carry myself with dignity

All you need

2011-12-14T11:31:35.125-08:00

All you need is a few basic looks in your closet that you can dress up or down depending on the occasion. Milanese stylist Alessia Fagioli Galeone's look is exemplary of this fashion principle. Here she takes a favorite basic look of mine, the denim button down and olive trousers, and adapts the look based on the requirements of the day. When I met her at the Albino Deuxiem show, she had just

A while back I took a trip to one of my favorite vintage boutiques and one of the co-owners brought this crop top dress to my fitting room while I was trying on other vintage frocks. I love it so much, but it's been sitting in my closet since forever. I finally wore it and it's definitely become one of my favorite dresses! A Visit To Sue Kreitzman's Studio

2011-12-14T11:31:35.125-08:00

[Text and Photos by Ari Seth Cohen]I met artist Sue Kreitzman outside the New Museum over a year ago and was struck by her original style and colorful palette. She splits her time traveling between New York and London and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit her studio and home and see her vast collection of jewelry and clothes and artwork.Sue started off as a cook but unexpectedly became

2011-12-14T11:31:35.126-08:00

The weather has been horrible these first two days of the Milan men's Spring 2011 collections. But the bad weather hasn't dampened T Magazine's Bruce Pask's stylish step. He shines on in khaki, white and grey outside the Bottega Veneta show.

2011-12-14T11:31:35.127-08:00

Back from Vegas! My bffs and I (one of them refuses to be photographed because she is a party-pooper), spent most of our time by the pool sipping on watered down piña coladas and iced coffee and munching on overpriced paninis and turkey club sandwiches.Glad to be back home, I'm so exhausted! Sorry for posting non-fashion photos, I'll be back to regular scheduled programming soon!

2011-12-14T11:31:35.127-08:00

The Milan's menswear Spring 2011 collections kicked off yesterday and the gentlemen have arrived in style. How much do I love the elements of this gentleman's look? Did you know that I live for a beautiful double breast, navy-inspired jacket? And leopard with studds! I'm laying under my desk now from excitement. But do you see the french collar on his button down? And last but not least, the

Zara Clogs

2011-12-14T11:31:35.127-08:00

If you are a fan and haven't found a pair that suits you, these Zara mule-style clogs are a terrific version. What do you think?Zara always delivers. The wedges from my aperitivo post are also fantastic.

Lady

Alice is such the lady in this fun vintage, floral romper and cardigan combo. The jumper is so sweet belted and looks fantastic with her vintage handbag. And, her Zara boots add a kind of tough girl/chic vibe to the mix. A totally fun look for an aperitivo.

These favorite looks of mine didn't fit into my other collages, so here we are (the other collection would be Chloe Sevigny for Opening Ceremony, which I wrote about here):Givenchy The whole collection was sort of the Alejandro video/Frida Kahlo (cited by Riccardo Tisci as an inspiration) and I want everything. I would love to see detail shots for this one. Everyone knows "resort" is a sucky

Save Face, Put a Hat On!

[Assorted images from our Advanced Style archive, Text: Maayan Zilberman]One of the tips we always seek from our friends on Advanced Style is:How do you stay feeling young and vibrant? What's the #1 answer, you might ask..."Wear a hat, and protect your skin from direct sunlight."Well, the sun is out and summer is officially here, so it's time to dig out your favorite hat or go hunting for a new (
