Ok, so now I read about the flustered customer...

Yes, how dare she! What a nightmare...

I'm so glad to hear you kept your composure :)

I think she might have been feeling a little or ALOT of insecurity?

If someone took the time and paitence to show me how to fix a problem (that I created), I would be paying close attention and THANKING them for their help :)

Anyways!

... and then you turn around and pet all the lovely, wooly balls of yarn around you and say, "That's OK, that mean old bat didn't mean to scare you."

You have the patience of a thousands Saints ... and did better than I would ;)

If she only knew!!! How could she possibly think you didn't know what you were doing?? You explained it to her exactly!!!!!

Some people are just cranky and nasty. It's like they can't change.

Glad you got to go in while Dr. D is gone. The store looks gorgeous!

GAWD, how frustrating. It always seems like working in a(n) LYS is a dream job, then you hear a story like this. You were much more tactful than I would have been, which is probably why I don't work in a yarn store. :-)

Ugh, I don't think I could ever work in a yarn store, thanks to people like this. You're a stronger man than I!

Oh my -- cannot believe how dense some people can be sometimes. Do you wish you had a shirt that said, "I'm blogging this."? (In your native tongue of course!)

If she only knew that you could knit rings around her!

I just want to say wish best Valentine's Day!

2008-02-13T14:49:00.000+01:00

See, this is why I don't work at my LYS any more. Too many stupid and obnoxius customers.

That lady probably expected you to help her with the pattern she had (which uses double stitches instead of W+T, and which can work very well if done correctly), not teach her something new.

My guess is that she was already confused about a man working at a LYS (who ever heard of such a thing!), and when you tried to teach her something completely different than what the pattern told her, she just assumed you did not know what you were talking about.

Of course that does not excuse her rudeness! It's just how a lot of people react when they are confronted with something unexpected. I had lots of customers like her, they used to make me so angry!

Anyway, the Gotlandschaf you commented on in my blog is incredibly soft, almost merino-like. I love it!

If anyone knows how to knit socks, it would be you. And I might add you knit beautiful socks :)

2008-02-12T20:51:00.000+01:00

yikes! you handled that situation much better than I would have. good for you for being kind even when she insulted you. i can imagine that working there is not as perfect as it may sound... but you still get to play with some lovely yarn! :)

2008-02-12T10:42:00.000+01:00

I used to work in a yarn shop and even teach classes on knitting socks, and still people would tell me that I didn't know anything about knitting in general or knitting socks at all. Some people are like that, they just want to hear what they already know. Most people are different, though, and if you concentrate on them, you will have a great time there! :)

It was sweet of you to try and help her. But dang she could've had an open mind to take your advice or at least take it into consideration instead of being mean. ahh...oh well...

BTW, you're so lucky to get to work in a yarn store.

2008-02-12T05:12:00.000+01:00

I do not miss retail at all. Sorry you had to deal with that lady. She did miss out on some good advice though just by simply not wanting to listen. And that poor man having to be married to that woman. That was very thoughtful of you to give that advice. I will remember that when I have trouble with my short row.

2008-02-11T22:55:00.000+01:00

wow i hate close minded peeps. just to make you feel a tad better, i was buying a longish circ to knit magic loop socks and some sock yarn at a fairly well known and trendy knitting shop in berlin about a year ago. the woman in the shop was trying to convince me that i needed a nadelspiel (dpn set) and i had to explain magic loop. well suffice it to say she didn't believe me until i pulled a magic loop sock in progress out of my handbag and knit a few rows in front of her. she was floored. she was also quite young so i was a bit shocked at her attitude but yeah, at least she didn't accuse me of anything since then. *grin* you show em. dude double wrapping is the only way to go for short rows. i even tried the pgr method and i get less holey results with a double wrap. (anyone who is interested, go see misocrafty's how-to).

2008-02-11T22:39:00.000+01:00

Well, first of all, you probably aren't what she expected to find. And you are a man so you can't understand how to knit. It takes all kinds. I see this in my LYS all the time. The other LYS in my town teaches only way to cast on and only one way to knit. The other one, my favorite, makes money off help classes helping people to unlearn what they learned at the other shop. The owner's theory is that there are plenty of ways to do the same thing but only one will be right for you.

2008-02-11T20:29:00.000+01:00

Waaah! I want to go to the knit-night! I want the surprise! But I'm working here in town that day. I promise, I'll be along just as soon as I can.

Also, you showed amazing grace under pressure and I am very proud of you. Bad customers are the pits, but when you lose your temper, you let them win. You kept your cool, because you are fabulous.

See you soon.

Oh my God... stupid people really are everywhere (did you see this? http://www.subwayknitter.com/2008/02/this_explains_alot.php)

You know what would have been funny? Every time she repeated what she said but slower you should have repeated what you said, but slower. ;-)

I'd come to the knit-night, but my parents are visiting - my graduation is on Friday! Hope you have a great night!

I'm sorry you'd to put up with her, but I still had to laugh at your rant. :o)
I wish I could come to the knit night, or just visit the new store, but alas it's too far away.

2008-02-10T19:03:00.000+01:00

What a fraud!!! Sometimes some knitters can be sooo judgemental and narrow-minded... have more than once been eyed really hard and then asked how long I had been knitting... like you need to have been knitting for 50 odd years to know anything... sigh!
Hope the knit-nigth goes well.

oh, and yes, I lived in NZ for half a year while studying... and I miss it sooo badly!

2008-02-10T18:03:00.000+01:00

I so want to visit you there but I work at those times :-( had I known you were there yesterday, i'd come around - as i was at home knitting by myself....
I need some wool for felsting (like Cascade 220) do you have anything like that at the LYS?

Tanja

Ah well at least you can take comfort in the fact that your short-row heels will be hole-less and hers won't :)

*lol*
I wonder how you could stay calm for so long - I think I would have thrown her out after the second sentence...

Oh how I'd love to join for the knit night. Hope you have lots of fun and lots of visitors!!!

2008-02-10T12:02:00.000+01:00

I'd say you probably encounter a bit of a gender bias here too.

And also there actually is a way to do a short row heel without wraps (and without holes too). I've only seen it done in Germany so far. (I found it a www.fruehchenstricken.de)
