Album Review: Joe Ely, Satisfied at Last

Thu, 02 Jun 2011 08:02:00 +0000

Album Review: Joe Ely, Satisfied at Last By: j. poet published on May 31, 2011 Joe Ely Satisfied at Last(Rack’Em Records, 2011) When Joe Ely stepped onto the national stage with his first self-titled MCA album in 1977, he was already a legend in his native Texas for his work with the Flatlanders, a band that also included Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, two other singer-songwriters who had a hard time fitting into the rigid categories of the music business. In a perfect world, Ely should have been a star, but as has often been written, he was too country for most rockers and too rock ‘n’ roll for most country fans. With 20/20 hindsight, one can see that Ely’s music and songwriting is as much folk as it is country and rock. In his songs, he tends to grapple with the cosmic issues of identity and the meaning of life. Even his straight-up honky tonk tunes have a hint of fatality that sets them apart from the sentiments of mainstream country hits.   Ely just turned 64, but on Satisfied at Last, he doesn’t sound much older than he did when he cut his aforementioned debut. The voice may be a bit rougher, but he can still hit those keening high notes, and his band still rocks out like a gang of hungry teenagers. The tunes here all deal with mortality, and Ely faces the subject head-on, sprinkling his tales with sharp observations on life’s pleasures and limitations with his usual touches of ironic humor. The opener, “The Highway is My Home”, rides a subtle beat that has hints of funk and reggae, suggested by Ely’s offbeat electric guitar accents.   Loss and limitation inform tunes like “Not That Much Has Changed”, the tale of a soldier returning form a war. Ely’s take on a subject that could have incited a series of clichés is written in a timeless style that invokes Iraq, Vietnam, or any war. Mexican flavored acoustic guitar and crying pedal steel intensify the lyric’s emotional content. The title track sums up a man’s life and concludes that true love is the only thing worth living and dying for. Ely sings it with all the passion that makes his music so compelling.    The album ends with three powerful tracks. The Texas reggae of “Roll Again”      uses gambling as a metaphor for life’s uncertainties as Ely sings “Nobody’s  satisfied, with the road that they chose to ride / Oh, let it go, roll again.” The  laidback shuffle “I’m a Man Now” tips its hat to the Bo Diddley classic “I’m a  Man”, but Diddley’s confidence is replaced by Ely’s self-reflective investigation of  what it means to be male. “I’m not a kid,” he sings. “I done some things I never  should have did.” David Holt complements Ely’s confessions with some icy  Chicago style electric guitar fills.   “Circumstance”, written by Butch Hancock, is one of the best tunes Ely’s ever cut, a mystical cowboy song with a Zen-like lyric that celebrates mortality and the confusing chaos of life with a wink and a smile. Ely delivers a reverent vocal against fat, twangy guitar notes that reverberate like stars going supernova in an endless summer sky. It’s a stunning tune that brings the set on Satisfied at Last to a satisfying conclusion.[...]

Fiery Blue Releases New Our Secret

Thu, 02 Jun 2011 07:56:00 +0000

Fiery Blue Releases New Our Secret

Mix a talented New York City singer with an Austin music producer and a San Diego songwriter and you get a spine-tingling sound that blurs the edges of rock, folk and alt-country. Their new album, Our Secret, (Release date: July 12) is a revelation of musical restraint and carefully harnessed talent, to say nothing of their mastery of modern communication.

The members of Fiery Blue - lead singer Simone Stevens (who lives in NYC), producer / musician Gabe Rhodes (who lives in Austin), and songwriter Paul Marsteller (who lives in San Diego) - have clearly defined their roles for their new recording, and they’ve put it together with remarkable cohesion despite the differences in their individual locations.

Stevens’ distinctive and emotional vocals against Rhodes’ elegantly crisp and spare production kicks off the disc with “Crystal Ball,” and continues to the final notes of “While The Music Plays.”  In between is the wondrously intimate “Eventide,” the irresistibly catchy country-rocker   “Slow Down,” and the blend of country and pop on “Wheels Up.”  Right in the middle is the playful version (with guest vocals from Kimmie Rhodes) of The Beatles’ “I’ve Just Seen A Face.”

“Irresistibly catchy in a left field way, this is music of the highest quality. It’s probably best to just sit back, listen and let this gorgeous sound wash over you and ignore genres.”
— Alan Cackett / Maverick Magazine

Harter Rock, weicher Kern: Eine deutsche Vorzeigekarriere.

COUNTRY CUTS JUNE 2011.Emmylou Harris.Despite all the counter attractions in town, Emmylou Harris drew a large crowd to the beautifully appointed Grand Canal Theatre for her concert on Saturday night last. She had a completely new lineup in her Red Dirt Band, and was obviously enjoying her herself on stage as entertained her devoted fans for over 2 hours. She included a lot of her current material as well as some old favourites and as far as her fans were concerned she could do no wrong and received a well deserved standing ovation at the end of the show. Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton’s new album Better Day now has a June 28 release date. Her much-anticipated album of all-new studio material will be released on her own Dolly Records distributed through Warner Music Nashville. As the nation's heart reaches out to the tornado victims in Tuscaloosa, AL and Joplin, MO, Sugarland released a live version of their anthem "Stand Up" today as a fundraiser for those whose lives have been affected by the devastating storms of this spring.

"Stand Up For Tornado Relief" is available exclusively on iTunes beginning today, May 31, as both an audio track and a high-definition performance video directed by Sugarland documentarian Valarie Allyn Bienas. Proceeds will go to the American Red Cross for tornado relief in Alabama, as well as to aid the more recently-affected residents of Joplin, MO.

R&B Singer/Songwriter, And Former Death Row Recording Artist, Jewell aka Ju-L, Set To Release Book And Album Later This Year
Los Angeles, CA (May 31, 2011) - Platinum selling R&B songstress Jewell, real name Jewell Caples, a regular fixture in the Los Angeles music scene, is preparing to release a brand new book, and album this fall. The former Death Row Records singer will release a full length studio album entitled, “Blood, Sweat & Tears”, in conjunction with the release of the book, through Best Hand Entertainment.

Jewell was signed to Death Row Records from 1992-1996, and one of the original members of the former Hip-Hop powerhouse label. She released a video and hit single "Woman to Woman", which reached #72 on the Billboard Hot 100, and was featured singing vocals on many of Death Row's releases including Snoop Dogg's "Gin and Juice" and Dr. Dre's "Let Me Ride". Her contributions to the legendary albums, Chronic, Doggystyle, and 2Pac’s All Eyez On Me, helped revolutionize a sound in the early 90’s, and quickly established her as one of the most distinctive voices in urban music.

Following the departure of Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, the death of 2Pac, and the imprisonment of Suge Knight, Death Row suddenly lost its momentum - Yet Jewell has continued to record and perform, going on to collaborate with the likes of K-Ci & JoJo, Redman, Benzino and Snoop Dogg again.

The book, and album “Blood, Sweat & Tears”, are due later this year.

17 MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT’S MATT GARY TAPPED TO PERFORM ANTHEM AT NASCAR’S STP 400 IN JUNE

Wed, 01 Jun 2011 05:04:00 +0000

17 MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT’S MATT GARYTAPPED TO PERFORM ANTHEM AT NASCAR’S STP 400 IN JUNESingle Makes The Grade For iTunes/CMA Fest Download And Microsoft DemoNASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 31, 2011)--Matt Gary (17 Music Entertainment), the talented Nashville-based performer who’s making the grade with country radio and country music fans alike, has three new notches to add to his belt of recognition. In the midst of his aggressive radio tour to promote his current single, “I’m Just Sayin’,” Matt received the invitation to perform at a NASCAR race in June. The young singer whose hometown roots run deep in the heart of Kansas will sing the National Anthem a cappella at the NASCAR STP 400 at the Kansas Speedway on Sunday, June 5, 2011.  The televised performance will begin at 1PM Central. This will be Matt’s first live performance of our nation’s song and, admittedly, the entertainer’s most difficult.“I’m thrilled by the invitation,“ Matt said. “But, it’s kind of bittersweet. There is a lot of pressure not only to do it justice, but also to ‘get it right,’ because everyone knows it!  This is not just a performance for me, it’s a performance of a lifetime—one that will be recalled by me and the millions watching!”The trip to the Kansas Speedway will lead-in to Matt’s CMA Fest-2011 schedule in Nashville and is a reprieve from his aggressive radio promotion tour. Over the course of the last nine weeks, Matt has visited stations in 20-plus states including Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, California, Utah, Nevada, Texas and more making personal introductions to those who play his single. Penned by Frank Myers, Gary B. Baker and Billy Montana, “I’m Just Sayin’” appears on Matt Gary’s six-pack, by the same name, which was released in November 2010. The cut was selected to appear on the official iTunes CMA Fest download sampler (2011). In recent festival years, iTunes street teams have assembled to hand out the download cards during “country music’s biggest week” offering free downloads from the country artists participating in the event.  This year, 40,000 cards will be distributed over the course of the four-day event. Matt and the other sampler artists will also be featured on a dedicated iTunes page that will highlight I’M JUST SAYIN,’ his 6-pack CD release, along with “I’m Just Sayin’.”Another renowned digital outlet has welcomed Matt’s music; Microsoft Corporation has selected the newcomer’s current single for its upcoming demonstration promotion.  Matt’s, “I’m Just Sayin’,” is one of the ten country song selections chosen to be featured in Microsoft’s worldwide awareness campaigns geared toward Zune, smart phones and PCs.  As a featured artist, Matt’s single, “I’m Just Sayin’” and corresponding album graphics will be pre-loaded and showcased on select Microsoft demonstration devices for the consumer and potential purchaser to enjoy in stores. The Microsoft promotion will begin this summer. To become better acquainted with Matt Gary and his music, visit http://www.mattgarymusic.com.Pictured:Top: "The men in plaid!" 75 Jahre „Vom Winde verweht“ in Atlanta

Mon, 30 May 2011 15:19:00 +0000

75 Jahre „Vom Winde verweht“ in Atlanta
Juni die Gedankenwelt der Autorin in Melita Easters‘ Stück Mrs. John Marsh – The World Knew Her as Margaret Mitchell.

Steel Guitar News

Mon, 30 May 2011 15:13:00 +0000

Hello fellow players,The pedal board on a steel guitar. Do you realize how many different spacings, pedal travel and pedal shapes there are from guitar to guitar? When you say a pedal feels good, does this mean you want one to push real easy or have enough resistance that you can get half pedal without running the pedal into the floor? There are many different types of pedal feels and of course, pedal shapes. If a pedal is rounded off from the top to the end, the ratio actually changes as your foot pushes it down and walks along the top of it. This might be okay if you get used to it, but after playing a guitar with a flat pedal on top like Franklin or Fessenden, it could be pretty confusing. The first Emmons LeGrande and actually second and third LeGrandes, I took the pedals off and replaced them with the old style cast push pull pedals. I like the feel much better even though the tension from all the way up to all the way down was identical. Upon seeing Buddy Emmons first LeGrande, I see that he did the same thing.I personally dont like the LeGrande pedals because of the sharp edge on top that prevents a player from sliding his foot across the top of the pedal. The old Emmons pedals, you could do this quite easily. The good thing about this is if you have a belt sander, its very easy to cut this sharp edge off the tops of the pedals. The Sho-Bud pedals do not have this trouble. I like the newer Sho-Bud pedals that are thin from the shank to the end of the pedal because it gives you more space between the pedals without the pedals being further apart. However, the very wide spacing like on the early Sho-Bud Pro IIIs, these new pedals give you almost too much space between the pedals. But let me say this out loud. All these pedal sizes and pedal feels Im talking about really must be sized and adjusted to the player. The person that likes one may hate another. I remember Tom Morrell and I building some of the first MSAs and Tommy himself built a steel guitar with only two inches of space between them. This was horribly narrow for me and I just couldnt play it. But he wanted it that way and played it very well.I like two and three quarter spacing or even more if the pedals are wide. I just put the pedal setup on my new Clinesmith and because of the width of the pedal, I went to three and a quarter inch spacing. This would be too much on a Sho-Bud or Emmons, but its just perfect for Bigsby or Clinesmith.Remember here, Clinesmith and Bigsby pedals, like the first Sho-Bud pedals, are built with a very wide pad on the end so they require either thinning them down with a band saw, which I have done, or add more space between pedals overall. Most steel guitars today that are on my floor here are a good blend of width and spacing, for instance, the new Mullen guitars. Its obvious that these guitars are being designed and built by a very good player, Mr. Del Mullen himself. These guitars are extremely comfortable to sit down behind and play well the first time you try.Just remember that any pedals thats too easy to push is not going to give you the control that you need of the note changing from one pitch to another. Also, the rate of string change will determine the pedal feel. The harder you push the pedal the farther a note goes? This is not good. The pedal should push with about the same tension all the way to the stop. As you push the pedal, it should get progressively easier, not progressively harder. You may notice if youve ever played an Emmons push pull, the farther the[...]

Howdy in Spreitenbach (CH)

Mon, 30 May 2011 15:00:00 +0000

Howdy in Spreitenbach (CH)On Saturday, May 27th the Swiss Band Howdy played in Spreitenbach. The concert was on the occasion of a festivity that is held every two years. Luckily, they could play in a marquee because it was raining nearly the whole day. It seems that Howdy have a special wire to the weather god, shortly before the concert started the rain stopped and no one was getting wet during the walk to the concert place. The band exists since 1994 and has played with great success at different festivals in Switzerland and foreign countries.Leadsinger Renato Rocchinotti and his musicians (Marc Zwicky - Keyboard, Backing Vocals, Adrian Aerne - Guitars, Backing Vocals, René Etterli - Bass, Bosco Blatter - Drums) arranged a very colorful repertoire for this evening. The program included songs from different famous country singers as well as songs composed by themselves and also some tunes in Swiss-German. A lot of their cover-songs are from the American band "Sawyer Brown" because these songs perfectly match the typical sound of Howdy.Even though the evening was held under the slogan "Rockin' Country", the program was completed by some softer songs. Howdy succeeded in sharing their great sense of humor and their joy for playing music with the audience. Unfortunately a lot of guests left the marquee before the end of the concert despite the good vibes. However, Howdy gave their best until the last tone was played. The man in charge of the sound was Peter "Voli" Vollenweider. Despite the challenging circumstances, he did a great job.More information of the band: www.howdy.chLilly Nussbaum [...]

Howdy in Spreitenbach (CH)

Mon, 30 May 2011 14:54:00 +0000

Howdy in Spreitenbach (CH)Am Samstag, 27.

Interview with David Ball

Mon, 30 May 2011 04:44:00 +0000

Interview with David BallCL: Hi I am Christian Lamitschka and today I present you David Ball. David, welcome to the show.DB: Well thank you Christian, good to be here.CL: David, we met each other a couple times before, so what happened since the last time we met each other.DB: We met each other, what, four ago?CL: Yes.DB: I’ve been a busy boy. I spent a lot of time in Texas playing in the Fort Worth area for a few year, but I stayed in Nashville. Since then I put together a new band probably about two years ago called The Pioneer Playboys. These guys were really playing in a kind of an old style, but new style, which fit me real good. I started playing with them, I think they kicked out their lead singer, their new lead guy. I took his place. I didn’t force him out. So they started learning my songs. We started getting good and about six months later we went to the studio at the invitation of my good friend Dan Frizzel, who had recorded Private Malone and stuff like that with me. We went to the studio and did this record. It’s kind of a live record in the studio.CL: Folks to have an idea to what we are talking now, that’s his CD, it’s an awesome CD. It has 11 songs on it and David will tell us now, which is his personal favorite on this album and why.DB: I have to chose? There has to be a favorite? My favorite is “What’ll I Do If I Don’t Have You”, it’s just one of those songs that’ll that stick with you, a melody that just fits me. I wrote it with a friend of mine. The song just fell out of the sky and it’s one of the few songs that I can play to the audience that has never heard this song before. In the middle of this song, they start clapping, it’s like I’m not really sure and I think they like it a lot. I hope everybody gets to hear it, it’s very special to me. CL: David, if fans like to get more information about you, where do they have to go to?DB: They can find me at www.davidball.com . We kinda make a pretty good presence on the net at the web and all those place. Look for us out there. You can order a copy of the new CD at davidball.com too, it’s out there.CL: If someone is ordering the CD do you put a personal note on it?DB: If they request that, I sure can. I’m very proud of this record and it features the band you know. The first times they’ve been in the studio, they really didn’t know how to behave you know. They were a little bit rowdy, a kind of a night club band and they had to cut all that out. Or they were sneaking around the broom closet and nipped some (drink), but we got it done. It took a little longer and it cost a little more, but we got it done.[...]

Victoria Banks – Never Be The Same (2011)

Mon, 30 May 2011 04:34:00 +0000

Victoria Banks – Never Be The Same (2011)1. Come On 2. Jackson 3. Never Be The Same 4. I'm Gone 5. Feel Like A Kid Again 6. Somebody Does 7. Blue As My Broken Heart 8. Barefoot Girl 9. Mama Said Don't 10. Remember That 11. The Other SideLabel – On Ramp RecordsR2011003Release Date – 26 April 2011 ( Canada) / 3 May 2011 (UK)Time - 39:15WwwwNEVER BE THE SAME marks the sophomore release for the 38-year old Muskoka, Ontario born and Nashville based song writer. With expectations running high after supporting superstar Reba McEntire on her Canadian tour along with garnering dual Canadian Country Music Association awards for Female Artist of the Year and Songwriter(s) Of The Year (Johnny Reid-‘Dance With Me’), Victoria Banks admitted to feeling nervous going into the studio to cut this album. She need not of worried regarding this 11-track offering because as far as this old grey is concerned it most certainly passes my whistle test and is nothing short than a triumph and something she can be rightly proud of.Banks who produced the record assisted by Grammy-winning engineer Eric Legg takes the listener on a modern day Music Row journey drawing on her own personal experiences over the last 18 months. There have been many highs and lows: honours, singing at major venues, escape from an abusive relationship and sadly the loss a parent but seeking that inner strength to carry on. Inside the digipak the liner notes include the quote “Music is the medicine of the breaking heart” - This project is about strength, resilience, empowerment and healing. It includes accompanying lyrics and a sepia-toned photo as a small child with her late mother. The challenge for any songwriter, when airing all of their laundry publicly, on a trial by fire basis, is to convey those messages authentically to gain universal acceptance. She certainly succeeds on this emotional roller coaster which is a labour of love from top to bottom. It is by no means mournful and predominately upbeat which is immediately apparent on the energetic uplifting opener ‘Come On’, the first single released to radio. It’s co-written with Susie Brown and Danelle Leverett, better known as Texas-Utah girl duo The JaneDear Girls. Encountering the blank page syndrome at a Sony song writing session who better to turn to on a track that captures the whirlwind feeling of falling madly in the love than none other than Miss Taylor Swift! In an adjacent writing room they heard a piano being played and it sounded “really cool”. Socially they poked their heads round the door and kindly asked Taylor to play it for them on a yet to materialize song. Inspiration is infectious it seems, on returning Victoria picked up her guitar and the creative juices flowed. It’s written from sub conscious, with the delivery of lines like: Just Kiss Me, Leave It All Behind/ There’s No Use Waiting Or Hesitating, the girl drops hints like atom bombs to her guy on a first date on this breezy affair drenched with fiddle (Larry Franklin). The swampy, hard hitting and purely fictional self penned murder mystery ‘Jackson’ is the one song that thankfully doesn’t draw on Banks’ own experience! As the writer of CCMA nominated single ‘The Wheel’ ideas seem to soak up whilst she’s on the highway. Part of the brain that questions and self edits, for her, are probably occupied when travelling - The words: It’s a long way b[...]
