I am reminded of a quote by Abraham Lincoln, "It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt." I wonder if ol' Abe knew how to knit?

I found your site from Micah via Cabin Cove. I'm quite empressed with the number of straight, male knitters "coming out of the closet" and declaring, "We're here! We knit! Get used to it! And look! Isn't it cool?" (Holding up socks and hats.) Western culture and bias gets so under my skin sometimes. A man who knits shouldn't be any more shocking than a woman who likes fishing or carpentry. Working moms give me flack because I'm "just" a stay-home mom; like I'm not progressive enough. They should see my drywall work. Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!

uggh, that woman's post made me so angry. She's also not making her point very well - just being generally offensive. I stumbled across your blog on Raverly, and just for the record, I want to chime in and say I think men knitting is amazing - I'd love to meet some! So please keep knitting, and blogging about it.

You know, as bad as Debbie's ignorant rant was, I was a bit startled to find a male friend has similar views. He has to stay home and take care of the kids now while his wife works which he finds distasteful but not only does he not know how but refuses to do laundry or cook as that is women's work. Those words came out of his mouth. Tried to make his mother in law cook for him until she told him to go shit in his hat.

Did these two people happen upon some toxic cloud somewhere?

Why is knitting effeminite? Is cooking the same? Tell that to all the great male chefs of the world! What is it about using yarn that suddenly launches the creative craft into "women's realm"? Are all crafts "feminine"? What about sculpture? What about carpentry? Why are some of these "feminine" and others "masculine"? If Debbie's father suddenly pulled out needles and yarn, would she hire a counsellor and disown him until he repented from his crafty sin?

I'm tempted to link to her post and rant on my own blog, but I don't want her to get any more notice than she's already gotten for her closed-minded disgustingness.

Wow. She's a sensationalist so her opinions aren't worth the bandwidth they consume. It's sad that she has to pick on knitters, but a bully has to pick on someone.

Wow, she is lame. Not only were the first knitters men who knit fishing nets, but then the first knitting guilds were men who'd knit socks and smoke cigars. Just like the first "Chefs" were men, the first anything was was man dominated basically. Except for the whole giving birth thing. :) I'm going to teach my son to knit when he's older, because it stimulates the brain and helps with math. I belive in equal rights. Equal means that it goes both ways. I don't think a man or a woman deserve anything solely on their gender.Nothing should be dominated by any gender. And no one can call a mother a "stupid mommy". The fact that she doesn't "get" knitting says alot, and shows that she has no right to post an article about a subject she knows nothing about. *steps down from pedestle"

Wow! What a sexist bitch!

My husband, a non-knitter, was telling me about some history of mmen who knit. Yes, they learned it as a survival skill! Mountain men especially learned to knit because they were usually alone or with other males. They needed to know how to create clothing according to the weather, darn their socks, and I can't imagine they didn't utilize said skill to occupy their time.

I am a left-handed knitter. My son is 10, left handed, and I have taught him how to knit. If he keeps up with it is up to him, but at least I have given him a skill to take with him in life.

Should I not teach him to cook too? I bet Debbie thinks it's an injustice to the masculine for a man to be able to feed himself. Hmph! What a looney wench!

Just great - that's what we need. Another numbskull woman setting us all back. Get a clue "Debbie".

Jason - I'd love to read this post. Where is it?

Thanks! And, keep up your KIP and otherwise. You rock!

2007-11-14T13:01:00.000-05:00

That ass set back gender equality by about 300 years. She was born in the wrong damn decade for sure.

Some part of me thinks she only posted that to insight a flame and generate buzz for her site. But then again, as hard as it is to believe, there are some viral women out there who are enamored with that "Women in the Kitchen Barefoot & Pregnant" bullshit. I generally dismiss people who believe in that garbage because to try to hold a conversation with them is like trying to pull Pluto closer to the sun ... aka, a waste of time. That mind numbing school of thought sounds like something my grandmother would believe. I didn't explore her site because I didn't want to improve the site's Bounce Rate stats, so I don't know how old this Debbie character is.

At any rate, I personally find it quite attractive and uplifting to see men and women doing things against stereotype. Some people just need to grow up ... for REAL!!

I think my original comment didn't go through.

I think she and Mason (KH) should get together for a cup of coffee sometime and she can try using that argument with him.
