here ani, peeps dont generally question their sexuality after a bad breakup, they question their judgement, or their weight or their ex boyf's sexuality, etc. Generally not theirs, u big ol lez.

riese i was totally jonesing for u to do this recap in the barren months o winter with no l wordy goodness!! (riese fan, right here) damn ur lateness, but ta for getting round to it!

Awesome recap-as always.

When I started watching the L word-fresh from my gay sisters speedy internet connection (I'm in Australia mate), I fell in love with it. I watched the first episode probably no less than 10 times before the next one came out, and I watched season 1 countless times over the next year. For a good 2 years I was totally addicted to this show. And I must admit, it was Jenny who I most related to. I was (and still am) single and straight, but questioning my sexuality after a lil hetero-heartbreak, and I really connected to Jenny and her deeply felt emotions and self-destructive tendencies. She had this drive to be authentic that overwhelmed her commonsense and it was almost like she liked the pain, because she knew it would force her to feel and grow and become who she was meant to be, and that's why I related to her at the time. Although I like to think I'm much more Alice than Jenny now. Alice kind of crept up on me, and I didn't really notice how adorable and sweet and funny and real she was until season 2 but she rocks my world!

So yeah, I totally agree with your comment in regards to Kit, that we relate to different characters and storylines depending on where we are in our lives. And while I was a Jenny (circa season 1 and 2)for many years, I know myself a lot better now and have a firmer grasp on reality and am no longer a victim to my emotions like Jenny was. And while I was so happy she was finally functional in season 3, it saddened me to see her change so much and become kind of nuts-as funny as her character can be, it just doesn't feel authentic. It seems more like Ilene Chaiken got sick of people saying Jenny was nuts and finally decided 'you want nuts?I'll give you nuts!' and in the process she kind of killed Jenny as much as she killed Dana. And also, so true about unemployed writers making drama as a full-time job:P

I'm, like, madly in love with your recent flood of Tegan and Sara lyrics into anything. It makes my heart feel good. Like that girl in the Doritos commercial.

stef: wouldn't it be funny if I just put Carly's phone number here? she'd be like flooded with calls.
*
ooo lynnie ooo I just started watching it actually, Carly is obsessed and got me into it. I consider it research. For you know. Writing. Teevee shows that are funny. On purpose.
*
av: Oooo can we prank call your ex girlfriend some time and be Marina? Or. That might make your week probs already more fun than I'm imagining it was ... and glad to brighten it (look, I finished!). Probs what you need is to DANCE DANCE DANCE.
*
carlytron: Hey, your ex-girlfriend ... lets prank call all the Jenn/ys we know. omg, leabians. I just looked at that and LOLzed at myself. That's probably the best way to spell it on your business cards for reals. Lets say we wrote a leabian teevee show. What do you think?

Also: Stef, if you promise to leave me messages pretending to me Marina, then I will give you my number. Otherwise, NOPE.

And Riese, I think I will put that on my business card, but I'll spell lesbians correctly. Or will I? (awesome Jim quote, too).

"Estimated time, 12 minutes."
"So this should take 5 or 10 minutes."

Brill as always, my dear.

Alex: right on, always Jenny, no one deserves that level of crazy other than Jenny.

And I forgot to mention this in my earlier 12 comments (never say I don't comment ... HA), but as I was reading the part about "hellooo" I thought of that girl in the Time Warner center and then you wrote about it! Well played. She was so hot and totally blew cigarette smoke on us and we were like "whatever, crisPAY."

2007-10-24T21:20:00.000-07:00

umm thank god for this blog.

everytime i was LOLZ-ing i was gonna quote you on whatever it was... too bad there were too many. WAY too many. I'm super serial.

I can't believe Carly did the voicemail thing as well. Right on Carly: no matter what your friends name is, you have to say "Jenny". Abso-fuckin-lutely.

FYI: my ex-girlfriend was super lucky to already have the name Jenny. No substitution necessary.

Anyway, thanks Riese. This made me laugh, and I needed that this week like you wouldn't believe.

Now suck it up and finish it. ;) =P

2007-10-24T16:59:00.000-07:00

hahah the thing about all the straight guys & Haviland walking out made me laugh. Someone being like "ok i'll give this a try" and then 5 seconds into it saying "ok im done". Like, sitting on the couch just to get up right away.

also, i love Italian food. AHH. I didn't know you watched The Office. JAM<3

razia: I wish I knew french, just so I could say "la petit prince" like in the right accent and everything. I love the way those words sound.
*
luvtub: I appreciate that, as I am totes behind. I could totes go for some cereal.
*
basia: am i drunk, am i hallucinating? perfect.
*
stef: you can leave me that voicemail. i think she wanted to be normal, and maybe was less artsy when they got together. though improbably nonetheless.
*
carly: you, also, can leave me that voicemail. I think it would be the second time ever I've gotten a voicemail from you (first one for you, stef)
*
anon: Thanks. There's plenty more now.
*
carly: Ah, 17. Yes, 17. That should be on your business card: "person who knows television and knows leabians."

I think it was 17 Reasons Why?

And COME ON now you can see why I totally called the Alice-Dana thing from the beginning.

Also, I am a genius. And by "genius," I mean "person who knows television and knows lesbians," so that helped too.

2007-10-23T21:19:00.000-07:00

the voicemails were always the same, and they were always this:

"hi jenny. it's marina. i was thinking about you. click."

remember, if you will, that marina left this voicemail for jenny once, and jenny played it OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN. the trick is, you have to say "click." and THEN you hang up. its genius is in its simplicity. and you never say your friend's name, you always say "jenny."

i have left and received that message so many times, it's not even funny anymore. except that it is.

2007-10-23T18:38:00.000-07:00

i fucking hate marina for reasons i have explained previously. carly wins for making fun of her and pointing out how ridiculous she is. i wish i knew somebody i could leave voicemails like that for. it'd be funny to ME.

what i never got was what jenny was doing with tim. i could see tim being challenged by her, this straight-arrow type guy, athletic, whitebread kinda guy being really into this complex, artistic chick who was a little out of control, but i could never see WHY jenny would really fly across the country to begin her life as mrs tim haspel. it never seemed genuine to me. jenny reminds me of lots of girls i've known, and they all preferred dark, miserable fuckups like themselves.

2007-10-23T15:04:00.000-07:00

my friend and i used to do the Marina-voice in random situations to break up the boredom, except that we'd always say "you don't know how much you mean to me!" which is the best marina deep voice line ever because just there, her voice goes from very deep to like, cosmically ridicudeep. (this line goes down sometime in mid-season, methinks)

also, i really like what u said about the marina-jenny bathroom scene and how it felt genuine. my first kiss with a girl (at the tender age of 22, ha ha) was actually almost identical to the marina-jenny kiss except not in a bathroom but on a balcony. like, the girl herself even had kind of a marina thing going on with regards to her look/style/mannerisms/having a gf/etc. jenny later describes her thoughts right then as being am i drunk, am i hallucinating? and that's exactly how it felt to me. which is kinda cool, i think... i miss the old days when this show felt real.

Wonderful, Riese. Thank you so much!

Whatever your other priorities or responsibilities are, I'll take your recaps whenever. They are like big bowls of high-glyemic-index cereal, except with the recaps, I conitue to savor every bite until the bowl is empty, and the bites do not get particularly soggy over time.

It's cool to go back and think about what was going on in '04 while reading this, too, and what has changed in the way that we live. (cack)

mmmm...be checkin' things out for updates, ever'day here now...

2007-10-23T10:49:00.000-07:00

I was about ready to die of academia induced boredom before I read this. You are too funny, for reals. Jenny as "Le petit prince" and Tim's "there will be pussy eaten in these here parts" seriously made me el-oh-el

lawlaws: Isn't that a strange phenomenon? When I was showing this to a friend who hadn't seen it -- back then, in like, 05 or something -- she said something to that effect to, like "Isn't that the one who's dating that blonde girl?" and I was like, no, that's the tennis player, I made the same mistake.

I think Max's bush beats all prior and ensuing bushes.

Thank you, you just made my morning :D

I remember I was also cluless about a lot of things when I first saw TLW, but somehow I couldn't stop watching it. I did know who J-Beals was though, and I have to confess I started watching the show because of Mia Kirshner (I loved her on 24). But Shane, Alice and Dana stoled my heart from the beggining :D

2007-10-23T04:35:00.000-07:00

I totally couldn't tell the difference between Dana and Bette either to begin with.

I remember thinking for a show that was set in LA there were far too many brunettes and not enough blondes.

I also remember being rather disturbed by shanes mahousive bush which was on a par with Max's in the fourth season.
