The End Of The LinkedIn LoveIn?

2013-10-30T20:37:02.000Z

Recently Overheard InTake Call Exchange Between A Hiring Manager And HR Director: HR Director:  “Are you on LinkedIn?” Hiring Manager: (sheepishly) “No.” HR Director:  “Good!  I don’t want anyone poaching you away!” It was said in jest but you know what Winston Churchill said about jokes: "A joke is a very serious thing."   I sit in on a lot of Intake Calls with a lot of… Recently Overheard InTake Call Exchange Between A Hiring Manager And HR Director: HR Director:  “Are you on LinkedIn?” Hiring Manager: (sheepishly) “No.” HR Director:  “Good!  I don’t want anyone poaching you away!” It was said in jest but you know what Winston Churchill said about jokes: "A joke is a very serious thing."   I sit in on a lot of Intake Calls with a lot of Hiring Managers.     I insist on it because I want to not only meet the Hiring Manager and hear how they think but I also want to ask specific questions about the job that the recruiters are sometimes hesitant to ask.   You know - the questions they think they should know the answers to.   I ask the dumb questions but in asking them I usually get the group loosened up and laughing.     Once the guard is down and things aren't so formal people are more apt to say the things that are on their minds that they wouldn’t say if they didn’t feel somewhat safe in saying them.   One of the questions that many times does come up from one of the recruiters to the Hiring Manager is a bouncy and convivial, “Are you on LinkedIn?”   The response is many times a mixed bag of messages/here are just a few I’ve heard in the recent past:   “I don’t have much time for that.”   “My attorney advised me last year to take myself off it.”   “I signed up for that but I started getting so much crap mail from it I went in and turned everything off.  I’d take myself off the damned thing if I could figure out how.  Do you know how I can do that?”   “Uhhh…I think I signed up for that once.  Tell me again – what is it?”   “Yeah, I belong to it.  I use the groups.  I think it’s great.”   For every four to five negative comments from Hiring Managers I hear a positive one like the last one above but that’s about it.   I always hear the muffled, chagrined surprise to the negative responses from the recruiters in the mix – they don’t quite know what to make of it all as they all think LinkedIn is the greatest thing since sliced breads (who in the recruiting/sourcing community doesn’t?) but compare this to the public’s angry response in the comments section to this September 21, 2013 New York Times article reporting on the LinkedIn lawsuit being brought by four LinkedIn users “accusing the business-oriented social network of accessing their e-mail accounts without permission, harvesting the addresses of their contacts and spamming those people with repeated invitations to join the service.”   The worldwide perception of the networking behemoth is far different from the Lilliputian world many sourcers and recruiters live in with their myopic outlook on how the world works but be that as it is it seems to be dawning on some in the recruitersphere management that, as one recruiting pundit put it not long ago, “Your workforce is now under attack by every recruiter who now has the latest version of LinkedIn Recruiter."   Read that again.   “Your workforce is now under attack by every recruiter who now has the latest version of LinkedIn Recruiter."   If you think I’ve got it wrong here I’d love to hear why.   Don’t be afraid to say so, even ‘though Big Brother LinkedIn is watching.   “When we speak we are afraid our words will not be heard or welcomed. But when we are silent, we are still afraid. So it is better to speak.”             ~Audre Lorde[...]

We tried to have our regular MagicMethod Phone Sourcing Class Chat this week and we thought (Animal and I) that there was an Archive being automatically created with Chatroll but alas! There wasn't. This is the last part of the chat we were able to get copied once we came to to what was happening to the chat. The early part of the class was good with participation from several people. This is the last part of the chat we were able to get copied once we came to to what was happening to the chat. The early part of the class was good with participation from several people. I'm sorry that part is lost. Following is the log that represents the last few minutes of the class - Dave Graziano and I are demonstrating what it looks like when a phone sourcer is trying to get radio frequency (RF) engineer names out of a Gatekeeper. I'm playing the part of the Gatekeeper and Dave is the phone sourcer. Here it is.

"Did not listen and cut me off, seemed much too happy to have power (and abuse it!) over suffering people." Such reviews are becoming more common as consumer ratings services like Zagat's and Angie's List expand beyond restaurants and plumbers to medical care, and some doctors are fighting back.

They're asking patients to agree to what amounts to a gag order that bars them from posting negative comments online.

"Consumers and patients are hungry for good information" about doctors, but Internet reviews provide just the opposite, contends Dr. Jeffrey Segal, a North Carolina neurosurgeon who has made a business of helping doctors monitor and prevent online criticism.

His company, Medical Justice, is based in Greensboro, N.C. For a fee, it provides doctors with a standardized waiver agreement. Patients who sign agree not to post online comments about the doctor, "his expertise and/or treatment." More here.

I like to get paid for my time. ;) 12:04pm Recruiting Animal I thought this was about skill perfection 12:04pm Maureen Sharib There's always pressure if you're a Type A personality. You carry the cross along w/ you wherever you go. ;) 12:04pm Maureen Sharib Okay - I'll go first. I'm doing some database "checking" for a couple far-sighted customers. They know this thing is gonna end and they want to be positioned. To that end we are "cleaning up" their databases on an hourly basis and getting paid (per name) when we add new names with correct titles. Anybody else doing anything like this? There are a lot of corrections needed in databases, especially after this firing tsunami we've experienced. It's not as hard as sourcing "right on" - meaning when we don't have any names to "get in" with - so we're charging LESS on the per name refreshment piece (as long as we're contracted to replace 50 names or more). With someone's database it's easier to approach those testy gatekeepers - anyone know what I mean? If you "have a name" going in what are the possibilities? 12:10pm Dean Lockett If we're practicing to keep our skills honed, I like to go to LayOff reports and start calling into those companies for something I'm actively looking for. These are easy targets and usually responsive on the other end. 12:11pm Maureen Sharib Dean -LayOff reports - can you 'splain? 12:11pm Dean Lockett You can set up RSS feeds on engines for layoff reports Check announcements daily 12:12pm Alice Owens Here at Kaiser I am keeping my skills sharp by working on building our Executive Pipelines using layoff reports 12:12pm Dean Lockett When you see a firm laying off, they usually state what depts are affected 12:12pm Maureen Sharib Another layoff report - can you explain? 12:13pm Maureen Sharib Alice - how do you use the info? 12:13pm Dean Lockett Don't go to LinkedIN or Job boards or outplacement boards, just hoover the company and cold call 12:13pm Maureen Sharib Dean - can you walk us thru a scenario? 12:14pm Alice Owens I receive the report and hit the websites for biographies and then do cold calls 12:14pm Maureen Sharib This is interesting...But is it for mostly upper levels? 12:14pm Dean Lockett Here 12:14pm Dean Lockett There is one 12:15pm Alice Owens yes - the name Kaiser opens a lot of doors 12:15pm Maureen Sharib How do you specifically use that info Dean? 12:15pm D[...]

He was lionized as "a taboo-busting editor and publisher, who helped set off the sexual revolution in the 1960s with Eros magazine and was imprisoned for sending it through the United States mail in a case decided by the Supreme Court..." Mr. Ginzburg valued good writing, and his contributors included Nat Hentoff, Arthur Herzog and Albert Ellis."
