unfinished masterpieces

The Jungle Book (Disney, 1967)

These backgrounds show small areas never fully revealed, thus impossible to finish… but even though incomplete, they were too stunning not to share - enjoy!

Are you out there?

Hi gang!

I'm considering a commitment to frequent posting again.

If you're interested - please comment. I love your feedback and much as I love hand drawn cartoons -

so let me know if you're ready to follow a new stream of posts!!!

The Jungle Book (Disney, 1967)

How about one more from JUNGLE BOOK?

The enchanting storytelling gets a lot of help from these incredible backgrounds, as well as the voice talent and animators!

Baloo teaches Mowgli about "the Bear Necessities" -

(image)

Here's the fabulous BG! I got to the very end of its reconstruction and had one tiny section I had to digitally hand paint, as it was never revealed in the scene. This always stretches my abilities (I'm not really an artist) but on completion I think I matched it pretty darn well! There's a slight pan to the right so you never saw this complete BG on the screen - until now!

The Jungle Book (Disney, 1967)

A phone call today sent me to THE JUNGLE BOOK DVD to answer a question… and I fell in love with this movie all over again, including the BG art. More to come!

Today, we see this wonderful segment - Baloo crosses the screen, er, jungle, from here:

to here:

Now, for the first time, you can see the entire pan BG revealed. Gorgeous textures!

QUICK DRAW McGRAW (Hanna-Barbera)

Quick Draw McGraw

(image)

I fell in love with animation because of Walt Disney… but every kid loved the Hanna-Barbera characters too!

(image)

The likes of Yogi, Huckleberry Hound and Quick Draw McGraw kept us very entertained after school.

Today, I spent most of my day off recreating this gigantic pan background from the opening of the Quick Draw show. Around 6 hours later… here's the result.

It's pretty lavish for H-B… hope you like it!

The first frame:

QD drove that stagecoach across an enormous pan BG:

here's the B/G without our hero…

And so you can see the detail, as is my usual routine, I've separated it into left, center and right sections so you can have a better look.

Alice In Wonderland (Disney, 1951)Alice decides to scamper through a hollow log…(Alive vaporized!)The boys mull it over(reconstructed pan BG, with the daffy duo overlaid)(and the reconstructed pan BG without them)Then, starting here...they end up here -and in the process, they prance and bounce, right to left, on this terrific pan BG.As you've never seen it - digitally re-assembled in its entirety!Click on the images to see them full size.)A very merry un-birthday, everyone![...]

BUGS BUNNY at the piano

The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie
(Warner Bros., 1979)

(image)

As an interstitial begins, we visit Bugs' palatial residence and move through this hallway to his music room…

(image)

Bugs is, of course, very accomplished in the arts: conductor, ballet dancer, drag queen (!)… and as it turns out, a virtuoso pianist, with a spectacular gold concert grand!

(image)

Here then, is the digitally re-composited BG with the Maestro vaporized. :)

Fresh, modern, and unapologetically cartooney. YAAASSSSSSSSSSSSS!

SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS pan B/G

2014-12-29T04:25:27.059-08:00

I've been studying the gorgeous B/G art from Mary Poppins for years.

Tonight, looking over the animated section, I had an AHAH moment and realized I had two pieces I could join to create a huge pan B/G - five hours later, it's done.

And yes, I think it's SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS!

Remember to click on it to see the full size version.  :)

PETER PAN - NEVERLAND!

2014-12-10T23:20:15.400-08:00

A real treat today - digitally reconstructed background art from Disney's PETER PAN!This artwork is a visual feast - and screams the influence of May Blair. These gorgeous backgrounds predate JUNGLE BOOK by a decade but the design influence is unmistakeable.Feast your eyes on these!!! this shot starts with a suspicious looking rock (cel overlay) then zooms out as the hippo rises from the water! Here is the background with cel characters digitally erased... Savor the nuance and subtlety of this pieceHere is the pan B/G from the FOLLOWING THE LEADER sequencethe boys remain steadfast little soldiers on the left!So you might enjoy a closer look - here below are left and right sections.Gorgeous stuff, eh?[...]

BAMBI Background Art

Today, another digital restoration of art from Bambi.
This is a reconstructed pan BG.

I've added larger left and right halves below!

RABBIT'S HUTCH!

2014-12-01T03:42:27.548-08:00

I've always loved the background art developed for the WINNIE THE POOH films. It's texture is unlike any other (but seemingly influenced by the Xerox art designs from 101 Dalmatians). As usual I have digitally composited pan backgrounds so you can see them in a way we never saw them in the films! Here's a set of beautiful and charming backgrounds from the first WINNIE THE POOH  animated short "Winnie The Pooh and the Honey Tree" (1964), which later became part of the compilation feature "The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Above, Rabbit's hutch - pan B/G with mirror cel overlay, below the original pan B/G Rabbit tries desperately to push Pooh out through his rabbit hole - no such luck.  Rabbit here digitally erased but Pooh's big booty remains - yet a bit more of the B/G is revealed...Rabbit's yard pan B/G a second, gorgeous B/G of Rabbit's domicile...a lovely view of the Hundred Acre Woods, adjacent to the Rabbit residence! [...]

THE RESCUERS Pan B/G

2014-11-18T13:11:36.951-08:00

THE RESCUERS (Disney, 1977) was a landmark film, marking the passing of the animation baton from the Nine Old Men to the new generation of animators. It's a beautiful film, visually and emotionally. Lots of old school Disney charm!

Today I've digitally re-assembled a fabulous pan background. Our hero Evinrude flies across this swampy landscape to escape some nasty bats.

I left Evinrude in the first frame. He's to cute to digitally eradicate!

As usual with a pan B/G, I'm posting the entire image, then broken it into thirds so you can savor the detail. As this was a night scene, out of necessity I've lightened the artwork so the details POP.

Beautiful artwork from a lovely little film!

ARE YOU OUT THERE?

2014-11-18T04:51:29.127-08:00

I'm resuming posting and I'll continue - but the last two posts got ZERO comments!

No need for elaborate notes - but if you're seeing this please let me know. Thanks!

101 DALMATIANS

2014-11-18T04:53:15.157-08:00

Home theatre isn't really a new concept - Pongo and Perdida had one in the 60s!

I love the modern look of all the 101 background art, very linear with color washes. This BG was printed and distributed as a backing for cels sold at Disneyland's once-upon-a-time Art Corner - imagine Disney cels for a dollar!

I've recreated the piece digitally as usual, erasing the tail-wagging pup. :)

JIMINY CRICKET - I'M NO FOOL

2014-11-17T04:01:59.928-08:00

The educational films Disney created in the 60s are beautifully crafted and still charming over 50 years later. The "library" background art using books as sets was inspired. Lookie! The JIMINY title card art (digitally restored)opening shotopening medium shotrestored pan backgroundvarious book backgrounds - beautiful little sets![...]

POOH: Heffalumps and Woozles!

2014-11-06T02:26:54.802-08:00

Here are some digitally reconstructed b/g pieces from the HEFFALUMPS AND WOOZLES segment of THE MANY ADVENTURES OF WINNIE THE POOH.

I've always admired the style of the POOH backgrounds. Modern, detailed and cartooney. Enjoy!

Here's a pan B/G with Pooh entering from the right...
and some stylish abstract B/Gs -

THE WISE LITTLE HEN pan B/G

2014-03-02T15:40:18.013-08:00

Every once in as while I get obsessed with an image...
it is full of road blocks but I refuse to give up!
Such was the case with this one.
Using every tool/skill I have
I finally completed this wonderful pan B/G.
Early Disney has a distinct charm about it!

LAND BEFORE TIME part one

2014-03-01T03:18:16.937-08:00

By request, here are digitally recreated B/Gs from Don Bluth's LAND BEFORE TIME.This DVD release is unfortunately a contender for the noisiest film to video transfer  I've ever seen - but the art is beautiful as we expect from Bluth. The character design was very appealing - like Bambi with dinosaurs. The stark backgrounds balanced the cuteness of the animation. On some of these I've retained the characters - to show scale, interplay between cels and B/Gs, or where they simply couldn't be eliminated. Was Bluth as good as classic Disney? At his very best... pretty darn close. Please remember to click on the images to see them at full size!first pan B/G a beautiful vertical pan B/G. Note the dinosaur at the bottom - this is a BIG pan B/G![...]

Disney's THE FOX AND THE HOUND

The very center of this was never completely revealed
but this 99% completed B/G was too gorgeous not to share...
