Sandy: Thanks! I love any color of iris and would like to have a lot more than I have.

Tom: Moseplassen also decided they weren't the same, so I'm glad to have your confirmation. This is why I don't usually get into these scientific naming things :-) I just look and see "pretty flowers" and don't worry about names, whether wild or cultivated.

Mary-

I took a look at the Norway post and I don't think your geranium and the one posted at the other site is the same species. I'm thinking that yours is "garden variety" (literally..i'm not sure which species) Geranium species (this is one where the scientific name and the common name is the same!) Herb robert, Geranium robertanium is a native species here in Ohio..but invasive out west. You definitely have a geranium but it isn't Herb Robert.

Tom

Moselassen: Thanks! So I was half right :-) Maybe that is why mine isn't as invasive as some people say they are.

Your flower is not Wild Geranium / Geranium maculatum
But it is defenently a Cranesbill/Geranium, probably Bloody Cranesbill / Geranium Sanguineum or a hybride of this.
It is really beautiful anyhow ;)

Moseplassen: I love peonies, too...they are so pretty, but they always bloom in the real rainy time of year and it is a battle to keep them upright and decent looking! I will make myself split them this year. Good luck on the geranium...you have a lot more patience then I do! I just look and say, "oh, pretty flower, I want one" and don't worry about what it is :-) If it grows, I'm happy. I'm really not much of a gardener and only the hardiest plants grow at my house....their future is in their own hands (or roots).

Wow, what a lot of beautiful flowers :)
I truly love peonies, maybe my absolute garden favorite :D Don’t be afraid to dig up and split, just make sure you plant it whit the top "root" no deeper than 1.5 inches! Dig them up in fall (or after flowering but then you must remove a lot of the leafs and water a lot.)

Your geranium is not exactly the same as mine, I’m looking into witch one you have ;) (there are 422 species...)

Sandpiper: I don't even have a good excuse for why I haven't raked the leavs out of my flower gardens....or pulled the grass and weeds....or divided my over crowded plants....or...

Annie: I just have my wild geranium in the ground and it doesn't seem to spread too widely. I have your problem with the small flag irises that I planted....they went everywhere, have fewer and fewer flowers and I can't stop their spread and they choke out my day lilies! I'm going to have to do something drastic this year. I'm sorry you have bad luck with peonies....they grow slow to begin with and take several years to really get a good size. I think that is why I am afraid to split mine up and they are flowering less then they used to. Must make myself do it!

Spring loviliness!

I planted a wild geranium in the 3 X 4 foot planter we have on our deck. Very pretty for the first year. It completely took over the planter the second year. I tried weeding them out. I tried Round-Up. I was environmentally bad and used a super killer herbicide (BAD!) I finally had to remove ALL the dirt and replace it with fresh.
They're beautiful, but unless they're in the right place, invasive they are!

Your peony is beautiful, Mary. I've never had luck growing them (sigh).

How beautiful! I love all of your spring flowers. With taking care of my Mom this year, my garden has been completely neglected. We haven't even had time to rake the fall leaves out of the garden yet. I miss my flowers.

Birdlady: that was the one that I had the most trouble with. My camera wants to focus on the needles and not the "flower".
