I agree, companies hadn't even fully grasped web 2.0 yet. Second Life was just a lot sexier to have done for PR purposes... But for the longterm, wouldn't you agree, that virtual worlds are a viable way of managing social interaction?

I can't say I didn't see this coming. I've had many people asking me about SecondLife given all the hype the last 6 months or so. I have told most of those people not to even consider it. The barriers to entry include the time that must be spent in front of the computer controlling your avatar as well as the interface being too complicated for the casual user. I didn't understand at all when large corporations were getting their panties in a twist about SecondLife. Instead of investing more time and effort into developing and enhancing the 'semantic web' and training employees in using Web 2.0 concepts and tools, companies have been pushing Second Life to little end benefit. Lets learn how to work together and share information in the "real" world and on the web, before we try and jump into some sort of 3d virtual world w/ avatars and try to collaborate in a productive manner.
