This dog was to become the Dogo Argentino. Starting with the then most valued hunting dog in their native Argentina, the Cordoba, which was bred from the fighting bulldog and the Spanish mastiff, over a period of 30 years the brothers bred in 10 other breeds to produce the Dogo Argentino with the characteristics they identified as being right for their type. These “desirable breeds” breeds included the wolfhound, the boxer, the British bulldog and bullterrier, the pointer, the Spanish mastiff, the Great Pyrenees and others, and each was chosen for a particular attribute – strength, power, powerful jaws, scenting ability, speed, white coat, endurance etc etc. The Dogo Argentino was bred to be a hunter of prey – hunting and killing prey such as wild boar, and even mountain lion, is what his nature is about. As a natural hunter, the Dogo regards other animals – including humans – as prey, just like the wolf does. In their natural habitat, the Dogo is often expected to eat his share of whatever prey he manages to catch – if he does not catch, he does not eat. These dogs have an incredible loyalty to their owners and his family, and will defend them even to the death. So breeders should be particularly careful to whom they pass on the very powerful and fearsome animals. The Dogo Argentino is really a very unsuitable choice for a first-time dog owner, for training such a powerful animal calls for special understanding and techniques. The Dogo is best suited to a master who will treat it firmly and in a consistent manner, avoiding any heavy-handed approach. If the Dogo is to be a working dog, or a hunting or guard dog, then the puppy should be imprinted at a very early stage to regard humans, and other animals, as natural prey. The Dogo Argentino is a wonderful animal, bred to perfection to hunt and kill wild and dangerous prey. Because of its breeding, the Dogo Argentino will always show aggression towards and animal or human that threatens his territory or dominance, even if he has not been imprinted.
