ಗಾದೆಗಳು (GaadegaLu)

Wed, 26 Jan 2005 17:02:37 +0000

This list is an outcome of the lengthy discussion on at orkut's kannada community. I just thought it'd be nice to repost all those that were mentioned there and more in Unicode for easy readability. Here you go...

en: Kannada 'gaadegaLu' probably have no authentic form, they spread via word of mouth. So expect few slight differences from how you know few of these... add those you know that aren't here, in comments)

Cynic, are we?

Wed, 26 Jan 2005 15:19:23 +0000

Here's some interesting set of observations (or I choose to call it that way) which probably has some truth attached to it. Looks like we often fail to see these and let ourselves sail away with time, embracing things as they come our way.

Why suicide?

Wed, 26 Jan 2005 14:59:53 +0000

Couldn't resist pointing to this very well shaped write up that discusses the gruesome situation that seems mere possibilty, but embraces someone somewhere and the horror is known to only those who've been through it, and what compels them to move to what might probably become an hasty decision that takes their life. I would've pointed to this from my link blog rather, but this one with all its comments is too good to read & deserved to be mentioned here. Click on! UPDATE: sham's epilogue to the same in Kannada.

Orkut Story (ಆರ್ಕುಟ್ ಪರದಾಟ)

Sun, 23 Jan 2005 22:31:35 +0000

Somehow, orkut is getting to be more weird by each passing day. It wouldn't let me change my homepage link! More to that, it wouldn't let me add a new user icon... the album too is down for what they say "Photo album uploads are under maintenance. Please try again in a few days." wah, orkut, wah. keep it up. shaahbaash.
For every few pages I click on, I get "Sorry, but no donuts for you... " or something... ah, its a pity orkut came to this.

Today, after a long long time, I signed back into my account and found some weirdo changes in orkut. The related communities on a community page that you started can be deleted and 'set right'. Fancy that, if there's some community you think you don't want your community members to get to, (quickly, that is) ;) you can just delete it off from the community main page.
Funny, of all, is that orkut doesn't seem to support utf-8, and all that "the community owner has requested all posts be made in Kannada" messages are just 'name-sake'. What good is that request if you can't type in that language? :P

an' guess what? our neighbourhood fellows (pakistanis, you guessed right) rank better than us in *number* in orkut Demography! check it out!

For once, I was surprised to see that the Kannada community (I had just created there for fun during the initial days of orkut) has been doing really well! Just updated the description for the same, with some quick links. Hope, would be useful to all those who hang out there.

Kannada wikipedia makes it to 200 articles

Wed, 19 Jan 2005 21:36:27 +0000

Kannada wikipedia now has 200 articles in its garner. Whats more fascinating is the fact that it is now one of the largest kannada content site on the internet with more than 1600 pages in its database. :) I'm sure more people would wake up to it and take part in the knowledge revolution. It would be nice to see something that would be the first knowledge base of its own kind in Kannada. A quick reminder of links... * Main page of Kannada wikipedia (mukta kannada vishwakosha) * FAQ * Community page * Statistics

Money leeches

Mon, 10 Jan 2005 18:25:55 +0000

Me and pramod were coming back from Majestic this evening after some small purchase we made there... when this unfortunate thing happened. I was moving straight ahead with my bike near hudson circle. Somehow, I was indecisive of the direction in which I was supposed to turn, and I slowed down to take a right turn. This guy from nowhere with his son on the back hits the back of my bike, falls down and this was enough for the traffic mamu standing there to call us aside. Ofcourse, mamu (the traffic police) wanted money, and so did perhaps the guy who hit my bike (nothing happened to them, their haiku honda got some scratches near the mudguard) Now, they started claiming it was all my fault and I should've put an indicator in that four roads diversion. Pramod chose to stay silent and watched. Mamu took off the keys, asked for my license - pocketed it, and asked to settle it with the fellows. I was a confused lot on whatever had happened already and it looked like the fellows were doing a mimic of pain after doing fine until now. Mamu asked them to go and check in martha's if they felt any pain. They said 'no' and that they were 'ok'. But the highly apparent mimic continued. Interestingly they stood up like nothing at all had happened when I nodded to pay for the repairs to mudguard. Strange. I was polite enough to give my cell number and address. Now, the traffic police (mamu) says that his 'higher up' would be here any time soon and would register a case and we would have to wait. right, understood. The demand was for 500 bucks. Maybe he thought I was a rich fellow with my pockets filled. Bargain went on... it was settled for 300 bucks. Normally the price is 100 bucks they say. (I felt like a jackass for shelling out that much money after everyone told me about the 'regular price' later in the evening). "They are money leeches, they are!" I thought. The number was scratched off from his paper. I then quickly move to the fellows and tell them that I would get that repaired somewhere nearby, but they wouldn't agree. The elder guy says "We'll leave this to showroom. Come and pay there". I then repeatedly request them to come over to nearest clinic for a check up if needed, they politely say 'no' and say they're very much fine and ask me to remember coming over to showroom the next day. They are ok now, and are ready to leave. After an hour, I call up the guy at the phone number he gave me, he says "My son felt a bit of pain, so we are here at martha's to collect a 'certificate'". And how much does a medical certificate in a government hospital cost? not more than 100 bucks. They can even get a free Xray without ever taking one, *ready made* for such occasions for a few more bucks. guess what hit my mind... "Money leeches they're all... money leeches" Government Doctors, Police, Lawyers, RTO fellows, Muncipality guys are all well known for leeching money, now the other people too have learnt to make the best out of occasions. Few are used to take the full advantage of it. sigh. Now to wait and see what happens next...

Kannada on Fedora core 3

Fri, 07 Jan 2005 22:57:03 +0000

(Click to enlarge and for more screenshots)
Its easier than ever to set up kannada on your linux box, with fedora. Here are the simple steps, take a look... Screenshots here. 1. Fonts: All you have to do is pick up some Unicode font, and go through the following simple steps: (taken from FC3 release notes). ------------- If you wish to add new fonts to your Fedora Core 3 system, you must be aware that the steps necessary depend on which font subsystem is to use the new fonts. For the core X font subsystem, you must: 1. Create the /usr/share/fonts/local/ directory (if it doesn't already exist): mkdir /usr/share/fonts/local/ 2. Copy the new font file into /usr/share/fonts/local/ 3. Update the font information by issuing the following commands (note that, due to formatting restrictions, the following commands may appear on more than one line; in use, each command should be entered on a single line): ttmkfdir -d /usr/share/fonts/local/ -o /usr/share/fonts/local/fonts.scale mkfontdir /usr/share/fonts/local/ 4. If you had to create /usr/share/fonts/local/, you must then add it to the X font server (xfs) path: chkfontpath --add /usr/share/fonts/local/ Adding new fonts to the fontconfig font subsystem is more straightforward; the new font file only needs to be copied into the /usr/share/fonts/ directory (individual users can modify their personal font configuration by copying the font file into the ~/.fonts/ directory). After the new font has been copied, use fc-cache to update the font information cache: fc-cache (Where would be either the /usr/share/fonts/ or ~/.fonts/ directories.) Individual users may also install fonts graphically, by browsing fonts:/// in Nautilus, and dragging the new font files there. NOTE: If the font filename ends with ".gz", it has been compressed with gzip, and must be decompressed (with the gunzip command) before the fontconfig font subsystem can use the font. ------ 2. Keyboard Layout: If you're just happy with Inscript keyboard layout, Fedora has it for you. But you might have to do this: a) right click on the gnome panel, and select "Add to panel", add keyboard indicator applet. b) right click on it, Choose "Open Keyboard Preferences" and search and select add kannada to the present list. Now, all you have to do is use the toggle keys to switch from one layout to the other. UPDATE: (March 7, 2005) You can download ISIS for kannada IME. A very handy tool :) UPDATE: You can use m17n db along with SCIM Input method to type Kannada using itrans method (similiar to Baraha). More details here Enjoy typing Kannada :) P.S: Screenshots of Kannada on fedora core 3 are here:

Age of Empires III

Fri, 07 Jan 2005 13:28:54 +0000

I'm not much of a computer games freak. Rarely was I addicted to few - strategy, first person shooters. But there was only this game during the college days that took away our sleep, made us hardcore addicts and stayed back in us - the game which was one of the best strategy games the world ever saw - Age of Empires. I still remember playing it on a LAN (setup for the sole reason to play AOE) at my buddy's place just the day before our semester exams. It was fun ;) In exams, though, I got scores that hit the floor; but *that* was the craze for the game. Recently, Microsoft Game Studios and Ensemble studios announced the Age of Empires III. Visit the Official Website; Official announcement ; Screenshots ; More Screenshots of Age of Empires III. Now, to wait and watch if this one could beat the old one and better the popularity of AOE II :)

Happy new year!
