I've posted about this several times on my blog. Mr. Goode has now painted himself into the corner of opposing Thomas Jefferson, which isn't going to go over well in his home state. However, he has a pretty safely gerrymandered district so he probably won't face much of a re-election challenge.

I talked about this in my post "I Swear." Lots of people don't swear on a bible, or swear at all. Dennis Prager is an asshat.

why is swearing in on a Koran any different that swearing in on a siddur?

In short:

Because Dennis Prager is a shmoe.

Honestly, I am happy that someone has finally made a point of not swearing in on a Christian bible.

This is actually not the first time at all. And there is a whole Wikipedia article about this controversy:

http://tinyurl.com/y99ds8

From the article:

"In 1825, John Quincy Adams took the presidential oath using a law volume [that contained a copy of the Constitution] instead of a Bible, and in 1853, Franklin Pierce affirmed the oath rather than swearing it. Herbert Hoover, citing his Quaker beliefs, also affirmed his oath in 1929 but did use a Bible, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. Theodore Roosevelt used no Bible in taking his first oath of office in 1901, but did in 1905."

And regarding Jews:

"several American members of Judaism elected to political office have "have departed from the [Christian] Bible as well. Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle used the Tanakh when she took her oath in 2002, and Madeleine Kunin placed her hand on Jewish prayer books when she was sworn in as the first female governor of Vermont in 1985. In the Federal Congress Debbie Wasserman Schultz also used a Tanakh, as did Ed Koch (D-NY) who served in the US House from 1969 to 1977. Likewise, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) who is now entering his seventeenth term of office, stated “he had never used a [Christian] Bible at his own swearing-in ceremonies."

This is a savvy political move, and it is also a sharp rebuke to anyone who claimed it was "un-American" for a Congressman to swear in using anything other than a traditional Christian Bible.

...anyone who says that is a hypocrite. As the one of the founding principles of America is a freedom of religion.

Honestly, I am happy that someone has finally made a point of not swearing in on a Christian bible...I hope more follow, and I hope it leads to a more open-minded and tolerant nation.

For the record, Jefferson was something of a questionable religious figure himself. He at one point took a bible and cut and pasted it to his satisfaction. Major deist, for sure not a Christian.
