Those are two different drivers. Nv is the open source driver that doesn't do 3D (so no Compiz), and the restricted one is Nvidia and should do 3D.

I used the nv driver that comes with the install ISO. (You know... The one that says something like "I see that you're using nVidia. Do you know that this restricted driver can help?" (Or maybe it's different for us Kubuntu folk.)

Did you by any chance install your Nvidia drivers from "elsewhere"? After kernel upgrades, it is necessary to recompile the Nvidia drivers if you used Envy (bad idea) or the manual install method from nvidia.com

That kernel update munged something between my nVidia driver and compiz-fusion... white-screen-of-death...

Did a complete reinstall and restored from backup. Now things are smoother than before

The driver that lets you use NTFS and read/write (instead of read-only) in Linux was very experimental at the time 6.10 came out. It has since improved a *lot*, which is why it's now included by default in 7.10.

hye... i am Beyta..
This is my first time visit your blog... it is so interesting... i am still beginner in Linux world and use ubuntu...

I was use Ubuntu 6.10 and i try to ount my ntfs hard disk... but i failed to do that... Y???

Now i use the latest 7.10, and i do need to mount... but i was dissapointed why i cant mount my ntfs disk before..
