Our OS is actually the easiest to hack. It is also the hardest to crack ;).

I wasn't there but I can imagine the comments at the time.... Horseless carriage??? It'll never catch on...

A box that people will sit in front of and watch people do stuff? A tele-whatchamacallit???

Linux, a FREE operating system thats not prone to viruses, spyware and crashes? It'll never catch on... ;)

I'm 51 and converted to Ubuntu 2 years ago... My mom is 70 and after seeing how well it worked on her desktop, after one too many BSODs, she decided to install Ubuntu on her laptop (with me on phone support). Everyone in my family and about a dozen friends have converted to Ubuntu over the last 18 months, with no regrets... And I just installed Ubuntu on my EeePC, wifi & webcam, it's great!!! BTW, I'm a welder, not a geek...

Please don't misunderstand me, I do think Linux can be used by "normal" people. Heck, I got my mum to use Gutsy and all is well. I just have a problem with overly-zealous nerds who think a revolution is coming. I've been using Linux on and off since 2000, and have yet to see this revolution. How long must I wait further? 5 years? 10? Some people need perspective about how non-geeks look at computers and software.

If we get to the stage where you can pick a random dude off the street, asking him what "Linux" is and get a response other than "huh?", that is the day progress, real progress has been made.

BTW - good blog. :)

Last year was the year of the Linux desktop/laptop for low-end systems. The EeePC, the GreenPC, the XO... low-end systems and cheap systems simply cannot run Windows (at least not well) and cannot cover the cost of the license fees.

And by the way, word of mouth *is* marketing. We in the DC LoCo team go to events and table and give out CDs. The Takoma Park Folk Festival (see here) was pretty successful.

I'd also like to know by what standard my family is considered geeks. My mom won't even right-click...but she has no trouble using Ubuntu. My brother and sister asked for Ubuntu systems for when they go off to college because it's easier to use Ubuntu than to deal with everything that goes into keeping Windows from getting a virus.

Prove it anonymous. Apart from a gut/happy feeling, prove that businesses and normal (ie. non-geek) people will be using Linux. There's no marketing, how the HELL do you expect it to be pushed, by word of mouth? Please.

Only the kids think Linux will take over the desktop world. Older folk have become wise enough to see that won't happen, certainly not in the near future. Don't worry, in a few years you'll be disollusioned about the slow uptake of Linux with the general populous too. It just... won't... happen.

But you're free to be idealistic for now. Enjoy the ride! :)

Linux is freedom, despite the blind men like you.

I love how absolutely nothing works on Linux works but people use it anyway because they have a strange need to be the self appointed computer elite.
