About time! So it "helped" a few people, but it broke just as much (actually the same) systems, more or less. If you didn't mind wiping and reinstalling each time it might have been a semi-ok idea, but it was really poorly executed and took a lot of valuable dev and support time that could have been used to actually fixing things.

Happy news indeed!

I never actually saw the use of it. I used UbuntuGuide.org when I started, so I could at least see what I was doing and learn from it. I've got a friend whose upgrade was really broken from using it, though, and her backup drive had just died so she was stuck with the half-upgraded system for about a month :(

I agree with Jim and Gez. Its hard to see where Automatix could really go now that you can do all the important stuff from within Add/Remove or Synaptic. I haven't used it since Feisty but I still have the extra scripts they added for invoking root gedit and root nautilus and I use them all the time.

I second the above comments. Automatix helped me greatly with Ubuntu when I first started - actually one of the reasons I initially tried Ubuntu. Got all the multimedia working for me so easily, no problems. I'm still using 6.10 so upgrading wasn't a factor for me.

Jim said it all. Automatix was a great help when I started using Ubuntu. Mostly because a couple of years ago there wasn't an easy and straight-forward way to install nvidia drivers without it.
Now that proprietary drivers are available with the restricted manager and a lot of stuff was added to the official repos, Automatix is no longer required.
Even without Medibuntu we have a fairly complete system, so I guess it's good news they killed the project.

If it wasn't for automatix I may have never fallen in love with Ubuntu. It addressed some very real needs in early editions of Ubuntu and I for one am grateful for their efforts. However, it's been clear for some time that automatix was no longer needed and perhaps doing more harm than good. I am glad they have decided to "close shop" as it were of their own accord. I hope they do so in a way public enough to discourage other from suggesting it as a viable solution. Thanks for sharing.
