Interior Home Good Lighting

2011-08-23T19:23:11.319-07:00

We all know everything looks better in good lighting... but how about in glamorous, faceted, colors-so-good-you-want-to-sink-your-teeth-into-them lighting?

I can't imagine the kind of gorgeous glow that illuminates from these stunners! But... where to hang them? I'd almost want them dramatically low so you could admire them up close and personal...

BRIGHT BEDROOM DESIGNS IDEAS

2011-08-23T19:10:13.456-07:00

I've been pondering these two little pieces of inspiration for guest bedrooms this week...
This lovingly painted door feels so special... if you could handle your halls being brightened up by such lovely whimsy, I think is would be a very sweet way to welcome guests to your home!
I've also been wondering if painting a ceiling in bright red, just for the soft pink glow it brings to the white walls, is crazy or genius. I'm not usually a fan of red in bedrooms, but in a guest room with tall ceilings an minimal decor...? I'm kinda digging it!

Could you, would you?

INTERIORS TO INSPIRE

2011-08-23T18:55:51.985-07:00

Hello everyone! Julie here from Chapman Interiors, and I am absolutely swooning in delight over this space, today! It's rocking a mix of design with performing an amazing balancing act between casual and formal styles...
(image)
In the living room, a casually slip-covered chair is just loungin' next to the very square settee (with ladylike posture).  The fancy trim and tall bookcase *might* be looking down at all the fun furniture, but the large piece of light, modern art is putting the stuffy moulding in its rightful place. Leave it to a round ottoman to say "let's all be friends" by pulling the pieces together.
(image)
And over here? Well, the sleek and curvaceous Panton chairs are having a heyday with the hard nosed dining table that doubles as a desk (note table lamp).
(image)
The mixing + mingling continues in the bedroom which offers a chic and simple place to catch up on sleep. Those oval windows are the bee-knees. (Side note, a big, bold coverlet allows you instantly transform your space... imagine this bedroom without the fun magenta addition. It would still be quite nice but a totally different vibe, yes?)
Let's go shopping and get this look for our very own:

(image)
So fun! I'm loving the casual-mod and formal combination. We got crafty by adding the salvaged architectural column topper as a side table to channel the formality of the crown moulding in the inspiration image. And the suzani on that sofa would make it SO much more inviting.

What do you think? Could you mix styles or do you prefer a more streamlined approach?

Dreaming of the arrival of spring has left me in a soft + hazy state of mind lately...

Like this editorial + flowing pieces from the Luisa Beccaria Spring collection...
Their gauzy + ghostly silhouettes suit that feeling of being stuck between seasons...
And the hope that new romance + sunshine is on the way...

ROOM OF THE WEEK (ALL OR NOTHING)

2011-08-19T05:14:56.845-07:00

I've recently discovered a new designer and her website is making me want more more more! Her name is Wendy Schwartz and her style is fabulous for two reasons...
(image)
This would be the first. A delightfully simple, fresh, cozy and glamorous bedroom that I would love to roll myself into at the end of a long day. In my book, one can never go wrong with white and gold, but I love the mix of styles and textures here. The plush headboard and frame, the large scale pattern on the rug, the tone on tone wallpaper pattern and lighting with serious impact are combining into a world of goodness for me here.

But then there's this...
(image)
The very opposite of the somewhat minimalist concept in the first room, the common vein in all of Wendy's designs is certainly the glamour factor. And you know we love us some glamour over here at c+k! I adore big bold design in little rooms like this. There is a lot going on, but it doesn't feel cluttered - more of a visual feast, with lots of little treasures to discover. Which is reason number two for loving her style - it's striking a perfect balance.

What do you think? Does your style go one way or the other? Or could you live in both?

FROM FANTASY TO FÊTE: POPSICLE PARTY

2011-08-19T05:14:56.845-07:00

Happy August, everyone! Camille Styles here, with this week's summertime party fantasy turned into a real-life fête...I don't know about you, but the only kind of entertaining I'm into this month is carefree, low-fuss, fun-loving and brimming with chilled drinks. This party takes the cooling effect a step further by showcasing icy popsicles in a rainbow of fruity shades. I created a mood board inspired by watermelon, cantaloupe and a green grassy lawn - summertime essentials, in my book! Invite friends of all ages to embrace their inner kid for a celebration of summer's last taste of freedom...These popsicle invitations, designed by Ashley Meadors, couldn't be more perfect for announcing such a soiree. Guests will be craving these fruity frozen goodies before they even arrive!Hang colorful, patterned lanterns overhead to turn any space into an instant party. Luna Bazaar is my go-to source for high-quality lanterns in a huge variety of colors and patterns.Hit the grocery store to stock up on glass soda bottles in as many colors as you can get your hands on. I always check the aisles at my local Mexican grocery for flavors I could never find at other markets. Or, get fancy and mix up these delish spicy sunrise mocktails (add tequila, if desired!).Who doesn't love bubbles? Greet guests with their own bottles, and watch as the air fills up with shiny little spheres dancing towards the sky.In case popsicles aren't quite enough to satiate appetites, casual picnic fare is perfect for this gathering. Serve thick wedges of watermelon with pepper & mint, and toss together platters of this incredible grilled peach & prosciutto salad. The key is to serve dishes that can be served at room temp, no oven required!*images: {row 1} flowering tree, cannelle et vanille; poppy cake, martha stewart weddings; popsicles, green wedding shoes; macarons, cannelle et vanille {Row 2} dress, snippet & ink; snow cone, gemma comas; tequila watermelon, martha stewart; popsicles in prosecco, green wedding shoes {Row 3} watermelon photo, well wed via snippet & ink; popsicles, green wedding shoes; sodas, sunday suppers; watermelon margaritas, martha stewart. party pictures by our labor of love for design*sponge.[...]

RASPBERRY DREAMS

2011-08-19T05:14:56.845-07:00

Could we all just pause for a moment in this hectic day to worship at this altar of raspberry trimmed with gold?
(image)
When I was in Las Vegas for market, I attended a panel that Tobi Fairely was speaking on. She mentioned that the best way to infuse color into a home is to do a monochromatic palette because it reads more as a neutral when you layer the same color (maybe different hues) on top of each other. I think this rule applies to this Miles Redd interior perfectly. Is it completely over the top? Sure. But the fact that it's all one shade makes it a little easier to digest.

But, let's be honest. All I really want are those walls.

PERFECT PALETTES:

2011-08-19T05:14:56.845-07:00

Some palettes never die for me and this is one of them. I adore the combination of this rich green (with a hint of teal) and bronze together...
(image)
(image)
(image)
A kick of golden mustard or peach gives it a nice punch, and black adds a bit of drama. It's similar to this palette I put together last January - just a new evolution! Whenever I see color combinations reemerge in my life, I take note. I'm pretty sure it means they're ones I can live with for quite some time. What color combos are a constant in your life?

HOME SWEET HOME...

2011-08-19T05:14:56.845-07:00

I'm taking one more day off of work to attempt to get settled into my new place as much as possible. So, while I'm doing that... wouldn't you like a little tour?? I snapped some pics while the place was still empty so you can see what I'm working with. Here we go! You enter right into a little hallway, which takes you into the living area...A huge selling point for the apartment were the big windows and tons of natural light! Not to mention decent hardwood floors. The space to the right will be the breakfast nook area... at least that's the plan for now! I'm still not positive on how the furniture is all going to layout - I have a few options - but I'm fairly sure my desk will go against this far wall.Back down the hall is the bathroom... It's the only space I don't really love - mostly because they've painted it a creamy color that I can't stand and the maroon tile isn't helping either. I'm going to go with a lot of white and grey to try and balance it out. From the bathroom, we're back in the entryway! Another big selling point? Tons of closet space...  The only awkward moment is the fact that the front door basically opens into the bedroom door. However, that little extra length in the bedroom? Totally worth it!I have a feeling the bed will end up centered in front of the window once I get a headboard! For now, it's against the left wall, which is also nice as it keeps the room really open. And now? I need some furniture! I have some small pieces that I've brought in, but I'm selling my sofa, and will still need a coffee table, dining table, chairs, desk, and dresser. Not to mention some lighting, mirrors and other accessories. And eventually a TV (preferably before baseball playoffs and college basketball season - the only reason I even want one!). But - just like I tell my clients - I'm trying not to rush into purchasing things just to purchase. First I need a stronger vision for each room and time to hunt down some great quality pieces, both new and old.So... what do you think? Any ideas of your own you'd like to share? I'd love to hear them![...]

HAPPY WEEKEND (AND SOME LINK LOVE!)

2011-08-19T05:14:56.846-07:00

I can hardly believe it's mid-August this weekend. With all my travel I haven't really been able to appreciate summer at home yet...
(image)
I want to throw on a summer hat and doll myself up for weekends in the city... if only the sunshine would cooperate! I'm ready for some hot summer nights!
(image)
But in the meantime, I'll be working on finishing up my move (I'll have a house tour of the place on Monday!) and doing a ton of online shopping for all the pieces I need.

Speaking of which... it's about time to thank our August sponsors! Much love for our Premiere advertisers - Fina Du with their beautiful Scandinavian fashion (receive 25% off during the month of august with our special promo code: cocokelley) Shades of Light where I've already been picking out pendants and mirrors for the new place, Noritake whose china I'm dreaming about setting on my table (especially this pattern... or maybe this one?), Tea Collection for some back-to-school shopping for the kiddos, and of course perusing the fall new pieces at Jules Reid

We've also gotta give a shout out to our other sponsors, Camilla David, Panty by Post, Annette Tatum, Storkie, Magnet Street, and Gemvara!

Whew! If that doesn't keep you busy clicking, I don't know what will! Happy weekend ya'll - can't wait to share my new space with you on Monday!

THE PAINTED PALETTE

2011-08-19T05:14:56.846-07:00

One of my focuses for my new apartment is art. I feel like I've reached the point in my life where my taste level and aesthetic is clear enough that I can start investing in some pieces that I'll carry with me for years to come. So, I was over the moon ecstatic when contacted by painter Rachel Wright asking if I'd like to select some art from her site for my new place! This is the one I fell in love with...
(image)
There's an amazing story behind it, too. Rachel painted this back in April when there was that crazy outbreak of tornadoes passing through Alabama.

As she wrote to me, "It's a lot busier than most of my paintings because I was nervous all night. The weather was so scary. To calm myself down and to try not to think of a tornado hitting my home I started painting. I had almost finished it when the tornado siren went off, power went out and I quickly had to put my painting in a safe location and get in the hallway. When the night was over and we hadn't been hit I came back the next day to the painting and noticed that it had sort of changed form from the night before because of the way I propped it. I went with it and decided not to paint over some of the really elaborate drips and movements that it had formed. I normally never let a painting take its own shape and always hand-work it until I'm happy with it. But with this one I couldn't do anything about, and it ended up very beautiful - as if it were telling me to not worry, life happens, and everything is going to be ok."

I know that every time I look at this painting it will remind me of this story - significant in so many aspects. As a reassurance that beauty finds its way to us in many different ways. That we don't always get to shape things into our own idea of perfection, but sometimes they end up the way they should be. And that we can weather any 'storms' that life brings our way.

Of course, I'm also inspired by the palette of this painting, and can't wait to find a perfect spot for it. I had already planned on having some aquas and greens in the living area, but that addition of a soft peachy pink is perfect for a feminine touch...
(image)
While I don't want things to get too girly, I do think a dose of these bright feminine colors balanced by black and white, and maybe even a bit of red, will play perfectly into my plans! I absolutely can't wait to receive my painting and see how it looks in my new home. Thank you so much Rachel - for the painting and the story that goes with it. I'll value it always!

CUTTIN' A RUG!

2011-08-19T05:14:56.846-07:00

As someone who has recently become obsessed with tracking down the perfect rug for my new apartment, I'm really wishing that the new apartment was in LA because Decorative Carpets is having a huge sale on tons of different styles and I for one could really use a rug or two!
(image)
The Designer Preview starts tomorrow at 10am, and you just know there's going to be some hidden gems (like the pink patchwork piece above!) Not to mention they've teamed up with JJ Custom so some fabulous furniture finds are bound to happen too!
(image)
The sale is located at 9000 Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. For all the info on hours (the sale will be going on all weekend!), location, and all that jazz, head to the Decorative Carpets site where they have it all listed out for you! While you're there - check out their gorgeous product lines. Honestly, some of my most favorite rugs come from this innovative design house.  Happy shopping!

ROOM OF THE WEEK 8.11

2011-08-19T05:14:56.846-07:00

Sometimes the Room of the Week isn't anything fancy or over-the-top. Sometimes it's just the coziest little space you can imagine...
(image)
The kind of room you see and think, "I could stay there for hours." Or, better yet, the kind of room you see and think "Hey... I could do that." I've seen this room pass through quite a few blogs but it never gets old to me and I think part of the reason is that it's perfectly attainable. That gorgeous, tufted headboard is likely the most custom piece in the room - everything else you could easily go out and find. The only part most of us won't be replicating anytime soon is the soaring ceiling and wood beams. That, you're gonna have to house hunt for!

Now, if you don't mind, I'm going to go back to daydreaming that I get to sit and lounge here all day instead of moving boxes...

These dishes. So beautifully designed, I'm not sure I could even eat off of them?

PS - they are melamine which means your kids and/or clumsy self don't have to worry about breaking them. PPS - right now when you buy two sets you get another one free. Stock up on some gifts, much?

I LOVE LA (AND A THANK YOU...)

2011-08-19T05:14:56.847-07:00

As many of you may remember if you've been following along on my crazy life, I was recently in LA wrapping up the last issue of Rue and playing with some friends of mine! From there, I spent a weekend in San Francisco before heading to Las Vegas Market.

I thought this crazy west coast tour deserved a little recap thanks to some fabulous sponsors along the way...
(image)
First stop: la la land! Oh how I miss it my sunshine! There's was hardly any time for beaches, but I did get to spend brunch with Alissa and Jessica where I devoured those gorgeous crepes, and enjoyed a little blogging gossip session.

I also had the chance to visit the new Nordstrom in Santa Monica where I was pampered with a brow treatment at the Anastasia counter and some fabulous attention from my stylists Jenni and Carly! My two favorite purchases (thanks in part to a $100 gift certificate!) were these orange twill Mother pants and patent Sam Edelman loafers.

The best part? My mode of transportation for the week. Thanks to the peeps at Nissan I was able to cruise around town (along with my lucky passengers) in this smooth Murano, which I am officially in love with. Much better than the dinky little economy rental that I'm used to, and the navigation system and bluetooth had me feeling spoiled!

And if you think all that sounds good... wait until you hear about my adventures in San Fran!

A BOLD (NEW) BOURDEAUX

2011-08-19T05:14:56.847-07:00

Tonight at Neiman Marcus I'll be helping to present some of the fall's biggest trends with a mini fashion show featuring some of my favorite picks from the store. I'm so excited to be doing some fun things in the fashion arena, as you all know my work usually leans towards interiors. But I'm even more excited that one of their top trend picks also happens to be one of my current favorites: bordeaux!
(image)
(image)
(image)
Paired with a refreshing mint, tangerine or bold blue, this rich wine hue is taking on a whole new life far from the heavy, formal style it used to live in. I can't wait to share some of the bordeaux looks we came up with for the show!

SWEET SPENCER

2011-08-19T05:14:56.847-07:00

I am absolutely loving these beautiful save-the-date cards from Spencer Studio, who just launched their new website...
(image)

They'd be absolutely perfect for any fine fete! Like... perhaps a house warming party? (*ahem*). I may just have to commission a little something!

INTERIORS TO INSPIRE: SIMPLE SOUTHWEST

2011-08-19T05:14:56.847-07:00

Howdy ya'll. Julie here from Chapman Interiors talking about what (I think) is going to be a a style we will see more of in the upcoming months: Southwestern. Gone are the overwrought tapestry textiles - this is Southwest fresh! A little industrial, a little indie, and always comfy and worn in... like a good pair of cowboy boots. We're even seeing a hint of pastels... All of which is what's making this cute and colorful home in the desert an inspiring place.Vintage and weathered pieces make bold color statements throughout the home, bringing in a sense of casual fun with this seriously eclectic style. And if I'm not in the tub, I'll most certainly be lounging in the shade on my beautifully woven raspberry-colored blankets or antique saddle- I can't decide. (Again the modern chair here on the porch antes up the fresh-factor.)To recreate the fun southwestern style, we started with a few fail-safe western staples like a leather butterfly chair and a woven basket. Then we layered on some modern elements with the table lamp, a parsons dining table (so fun in red!) and a linear dresser. A flat woven rug (called a Kilim) and pillows are the perfect place to bring in texture, color and pattern. Top things off with a playful polka dot bowl and a modern floor lamp and you'll be living the new Southwestern dream.  See ya 'round folks,xoxo-Julie *images via MarieClaire Maison[...]

FANCY CANVAS

2011-08-19T05:14:56.848-07:00

If these aren't the sweetest little pair of shoes ever... I don't know what is.
(image)
Perfectly casual with a wink of fancy. I am officially hunting down a pair of plain canvas espadrilles so I can DIY these myself. Or you can buy them right here.

LA DOLCE VITA: MORE RED + GREEN

2011-08-19T05:14:56.848-07:00

Yes, I'm still obsessing over the color combo of red + green as we head in August and the sweetest part of summer...
(image)
Evoking some vintage nostalgia and a nod to Italian culture (I mean, could that Dolce & Gabbana dress say it any more perfectly?) this mod mix is the perfect style inspiration for the rest of summer... and right on into fall too!

APARTMENT #26: THE INSPIRATION

2011-08-19T05:14:56.848-07:00

This weekend I got the keys to my new apartment. #26. Which is also my birthday. I think it's a sign? After walking into this big empty space all by myself I realized... this is the first time I've had my own place in four years. It's strange to not have to compromise on a design to fit a struggling budget or a boy. Strange and exhilarating!

So, naturally, I spent a little time this weekend pondering the design of the space - and here's what I've got started...
(image)
I've got all white walls, light hardwood floors and big windows (photos of it all will be coming soon!) so most of these picks play off of those elements. I know that in the dining nook I'll want a bench seat, but also some chairs that are either the dark Thonet style or upholstered in a fun fabric. I'm trying to keep things small scale as it'll help give me flexibility with the layout and keep the space feeling uncluttered as I'll have to squeeze in my desk, living, and dining area all in one room.

Now that I've got a little bit of direction, I'm working on a color scheme and sourcing actual pieces! Stay tuned my friends - this is going to be a great little project to add to the blog!

To check out my sources and inspiration as I go, follow the apartment possibilities on pinterest!

HAVE A LUSH LITTLE AWEEKEND...

2011-08-19T05:14:56.848-07:00

The more I travel, the more I appreciate coming home to Seattle where even in the city things always feel lush and fresh - I suppose I should thank the rain for that? I'm happy that we'll be having blue skies all weekend, however, and I plan to take advantage of them as much as I can...
(image)
(image)
(image)
Maybe an impromptu picnic? A book in the backyard? Whatever you're up to, have yourself a lovely little weekend!

ROOM OF THE WEEK (BUT WHAT KIND OF ROOM IS IT?)

2011-08-19T05:14:56.849-07:00

I adore the work of photographer Eric Piasecki and actually had several rooms that he's shot up for Room of the Week today, but I decided to go with this one. Why? Because I think a little conversation needs to be had...
(image)
I love this space. But what is it? Or what could it be? As I start brainstorming layout ideas for my new apartment, I keep look at this thinking that maybe it really is a great all in one space? Sofa, dining table, storage, bar... yup it's got just about everything... But does that make it highly functional or completely confusing? I actually adore every piece and detail - especially the scale and finishing details of the furniture and those warm walls... I'm just not sure it's defined enough?

What do you think? Is it a just a pretty face in a sunny spot, or does it have potential to be translated into a little apartment setup?

FROM FANTASY TO FÊTE: SOUTHERN HOSPITALITY

2011-08-19T05:14:56.849-07:00

Camille Styles here, with this week's fantasy of an old-fashioned Southern potluck, brimming with the bounty of summer...Designed in shades of mint, sky and warm wood tones, this party transports guests to a Southern porch where they can sip mint juleps and cool down with slices of watermelon. Dressed in sundresses and seersucker, they're welcomed onto a grassy lawn set for croquet. It's all so inviting, they may never want to leave!Set a wood farm table with bunches of magnolia blossoms, antique silver and your finest china. The formality is balanced by sweet tea served straight up in mason jars, paired with southern classics like chilled tomato soup and deviled eggs. A light main-course, like grilled swordfish with herbed butter, adds a modern touch to the menu. These bacon-bourbon brownies are the ultimate guilty pleasure. Salty, smoky and sweet, they're even more delicious served from a mismatched collection of antique teacups. GET THE LOOK: WHITE OUT

2011-08-19T05:14:56.849-07:00

Summer is the most difficult time of year to get dressed. It's hot, it's humid, and comfort is top priority. Let's be honest, Scott Schuman would not want to photograph us in our tank top and flip flops ensemble. So how do we make ourselves presentable? Cristina from Fuji Files here with your sartorial survival guide to hot summer days.White is the coolest of colors for summer, literally! The color white reflects sunlight and heat more than any other color, making it your best option for keeping cool. But if the thought of an entirely white outfit is slightly terrifying (it certainly is for me!) then mix in some creams and nudes. The key to this look is keeping it light and airy, not too structured. A loose collared shirt is an easy breezy choice for summer, pair it with textured shorts or skirt in a neutral shade and you've got instant style. Add a few accessories such as cute sandals and a tote, and you're done! An easy summer ensemble that is both cool and stylish.*resources: shirt Topshop, shorts Anna Sui, shoes Swedish Hasbeens, necklace Kenneth Jay Lane, tote Fleabags, sunglass case Kenton Sorenson, sunglasses Ray-Ban*images via thesartorialist, stockholmstreetstyle, vanessajackman, netaporter, swedishhasbeens, needsupply   [...]
