New 2008 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG

2011-08-16T08:42:20.266-07:00

By Dr Long Mercedes-Benzs latest vehicle to undergo AMG transformation will be the recently premiered W204 C-Class. It will be named rather expectedly C63 AMG, a successor to the outgoing 2006 model of lower alpha-numerical order, the C55 AMG.The luxury automaker has been plonking its new AMG hand-made 6.3L V8 into every conceivable model of late. To date, DaimlerChrysler AG have for sale the CLK63, E63, S63, CLS63, R63 and the ML63, all in AMG guise. Next up, the junior exec sedan in MB's lineup will get the same 32valve DOHC V8 displacing 6,208cc. Official output figures are 507hp @ 6,800 rpm and 630Nm of torque @ 5,200 rpm in most versions. In the C63 AMG however, this sophisticated 6.3-litre V8 will be massaged further to pump out massive (estimated) 520bhp! Should this power trip materialises, this baby Mercedes saloon is slated to be the fastest car of its kind in the world. But it is widely expected to churn out only 485bhp in its final form. In comparison, the most powerful C-Class model currently sold is the W203 C55 AMG, which is already delivering a punchy 362hp from its 5.5L twin-Kompressor V8.According to insider sources at MBs AMG division, the C63 should be able to outgun the 420bhp Audi RS4 as well as the upcoming BMW M3, which is rumored to be good for around 415bhp. If all claims come true, this hotter C-Class may lead the teutonic trios power race. All that brute will be sent to the C63's rear wheels via Mercs current 7-G Tronic transmission, albeit retuned for better shift responsiveness and incisiveness. An AWD, 4Matic model is also expected further down the road. Standard lightweight AMG alloys are 18-inches with upsizing options. Six-piston calipers up front bite fade-resistant ceramic-composite disc rotors, to effectively haul this AMG saloon down from speed.AMG director of marketing and sales/branding, Mario Spitzner promises a compact muscle car thats sportier with more crisp performance. However, he exclaimed: "The world doesn't need two M3s", adding that the Merc is likely a more civilised tourer minus that European boy-racers demeanour. Loosely translated it means that the C63 will remain aesthetically understated versus its Munich rival, with ride and handling that are aptly refined. In other words, not sacrificing comfort in the quest of all-out hard-edged handling, a common and affable trait for the three-pointed star - with the exception of DTM cars and the McLaren SLR supercar. We can expect not only a powerful drive, but a smooth and comfortable ride too, with steering and chassis that emphasises composure and confidence on the road.Prototype C63s have been caught undergoing high-speed testing on several occasions on autobahns and at Germanys challenging Nrburgring circuit. The super upmarket C63 AMG has been spied to sport a lower and wider air dam with bigger air inlets. Other key differences from the normal C-Class variants will be a set of imposing quad exhausts and the obligatory-now-for-high-performance-car rear diffuser. This high performance BMW M3 and Audi RS4 challenger is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2008, possibly at next years Geneva International Motor Show. New Porsche Cayenne: Momentum Launch

2011-08-16T08:42:20.267-07:00

A first time SUV for Porsche AG, the Cayenne has been a delightful success for the most profitable automaker in the world. More than 150,000 units have found affluent owners around the globe after rolling off the production line in Leipzig, Germany since 2002. The all-terrain sports car had indeed set many benchmarks for the segment and the second-generation model is expected to carry on the momentum of its predecessor with greater efficiency. What is certain is that the new Cayenne will definitely push the boundaries set earlier and raise the benchmarks once again. Indeed even in its earlier incarnations, it has surpassed the 1st generation BMW X5 in on-road performance, yet at the same time as capable as a Land Rover off-road.The much awaited 2nd generation Porsche Cayenne was launched to a crowd of around 300 media and guests at the Cayenne Pavillion of the Bukit Kiara Equestrian and Country Resort on Friday 9th March 2007. Guests were treated to a spectacular launch sequence flagged off by race-horses run to highlight the models theme: Momentum. The launch at the resort also provided an outdoor and airy feel that was in keeping with the spirit of the new model. This was also to link the dynamism of horses and the adventurous sporting environment like polo, horse racing or even taming the wild outdoors on horseback, with the new Cayenne. For this 2nd generation Porsche Cayenne, many enhancements - mostly under the skin - will bring it to the forefront of SUV technology. Most significant new feature across the new Cayenne range is DFI or Direct Fuel Injection which enables more power but with improved fuel efficiency! It is quite amazing that the new Cayenne models have increased engine capacities (V6 up from 3.2L to 3.6L, S and Turbo up from 4.5L to 4.8L), more power (V6 up from 250bhp to 290bhp, S up from 340bhp to 385bhp, Turbo up from 450bhp to 500bhp) and yet have lower fuel consumption. Truly engineering advancements: higher performance, less fuel consumption.Living up to Porsche's sporting heritage and badge, the new Cayenne promises to drive more like sports cars. Thanks largely to the new optional PDCC and standard Sport button found in all models. PDCC is short for Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, which actively limits body roll in bends and balances out the cars angle under nearly all driving conditions (following braking, steering inputs and take-off). Body movements are therefore minimized during even spirited drives, with the sporty Cayenne able to corner almost flat during such outings. The Sport button allows for a more sporting and dynamic drive for models equipped with the Tiptronic S automatic transmission and PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management). The most obvious change is to the exterior and the new Cayenne sports a more dynamic and distinctive front view thanks to a new slimmer headlight design, enlarged front air inlets, re-positioned fog lights and more contoured front shoulders. At the rear, the new LED taillights add to the enhanced visual appeal together with a redesigned bumper with a diffuser and tail pipes in the lower apron. The roofline is also lengthened with clever use of a new rear spoiler. All these styling enhancements not only serve to give the New Cayenne its distinctive arresting visual appearance but also bring in greater aerodynamic efficiency. The new Cayenne is available now at Porsche Centre Glenmarie, Kuala Lumpur and Penang. Prices start at RM650K for the base Cayenne, RM765K for the Cayenne S and a cool RM1.1million for the Cayenne Turbo. All prices are quoted with the 6-speed Tiptronic S gearbox, without insurance.Related Post: http://autocarsp.b[...]

All New Toyota VIOS launched in Bangkok

2011-08-16T08:42:20.269-07:00

Courtesy of Mr Peter Lee reporting from Bangkok, Thailand, these are the official pictures of this popular model replacement from Toyota.Prices start at RM50K equivalent in Thai baht to the top-spec G trim asking for around RM75K.In the royal kingdom however, life does not get cheaper even with the basic entry-level model, since all variants come with ABS standard. Options include leather seats, airbags and immobilizer but not the all important safety braking system. From the pictures, its 1.5L engine remains largely unchanged. Also, the centrally placed meters are still present, but now with Optitron gauges for the 'G' version.Update:Significantly, the all-new VIOS' wheelbase has been increased to 2550mm (previously 2500mm). As a result, the passenger cabin is more spacious now (120mm extra) but the overall length of the car has been increased by just 15mm. In other words, wheels are increasingly being pushed nearer to the four corners of the vehicle. In growing evolution, boot volume is 19% more capacious than its predecessor, offering up to 475 litres. Not wanting to discard a proven powerplant and likely in the interest of cost, Toyota's 1NZ-FE DOHC 16 valve 1.5L VVT-i engine soldiers on in this replacement model, albeit with claims of some minor improvements. Perhaps better fuel efficiency now? Power output and torque figures are the same as the Yaris, at 109bhp @ 6,000rpm and 141Nm @ 4200 rpm respectively. Transmission options are either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic. No CVT options are available for the Thai/ASEAN market, as opposed to the JDM Yaris and Ractis with Super CVT-i (Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent). CVT allows for a smoother drive, with no perceptible gear shifts at all, as gear ratios are infinitely varied with the use of steel belts and pulleys. Another welcomed benefit would be lower fuel consumption due to lesser loss of power in transmission.Related post: http://autocarsp.blogspot.com/2007/03/all-new-2007-toyota-vios.html[...]

Are century dash figures accurate?

2011-08-16T08:42:20.270-07:00

By Dr Long

(image)
(image) (image)
(image)
More often than not, almost all of us are taken in by performance figures claimed by manufacturers, be it in brochures, pamphlets, specs sheets, showroom display stands, auto mags, popular auto blogs and of course, in media advertisements. But how accurate and reliable are these numbers?

We have tested a precision automotive timing device by Tesla Electronics Inc. called GTech Pro SS Performance Meter over the last 4 months. Here are the eye popping results.

For 0-100km/h sprint, it was indicated as 0-60mph on display, for it is an American instrument. Since every of the following vehicles are tested with the same device, any errors due to differences between timing a sprint up to 96km/h or 100km/h is nullified.

Best timings are recorded as follows, after 8-10 runs (claimed performance figures in bracket):

BMW 325i E90 = 9.66secs (7.7secs)
BMW M5 = 5.33secs (4.7secs)
Brabus K4 = 8.82secs (7.5secs)
Honda City 1.5 iDSI = 14.68secs (10.8secs)
Mercedes-Benz E200K = 11.32secs (9.9secs)
Mercedes-Benz R350L = 8.66secs (8.3secs)
smart roadster = 11.28secs (10.6secs)

So the conclusion is not to take things at face value, not when it comes to century sprint figures!

Next report on the possible reasons and causes for the 'consistent' discrepancies...
Or is it a well-known secret that auto manufacturers are often a tad over-enthusiastic with their claims?

New 2008 BMW M3

2011-08-16T08:42:20.271-07:00

By Dr LongThis is one highly anticipated E92-based variant from BMW, seeing that the newly-launched BMW 335i coupe is about as fast as the outgoing E46 M3. Without a doubt, this 2008 M3 will be even faster and all the more furiousnaturally (pun intended)! Under the shapely and muscular hood is likely a 4.0L V-8 that punches out power figures in excess of 400bhp circa 8,000rpm. Century dash is expected to be sub-5secs and top end nothing short of 300km/h if unlimited. These are pictures of the upcoming all-new M3 being shown at the 2007 Geneva Auto Salon as a concept. The production car is expected to look no different. Remember the E60 M5 Concept shown the same way a few years ago? Anyway, notable changes as compared to the lesser coupe include the power-bulged hood, more aerodynamic wing mirrors, fussier looking front/rear bumpers, rear diffusers, carbon fibre roof and vented front plastic fenders with that all-iconic embedded M3 emblem. The other body parts of the 2008 M3 are however nicked off the standard 3-series coupe production line. These are regular items like BMWs signature angel-eye headlamps, E92 taillights, doors, windows, windscreens and boot lid.The sixteen-spoke 19" M-alloys should make it to the showroom unit. BMWs M division manic-revving V8 monster will transmit its brute to the tarmac by way of the rear wheels, of course - via a conventional six-speed manual transmission or a robotised dual-clutch unit, not unlike Volkswagen-Audi Groups DSG. It looks like the still-juddery and lurchy SMGIII (as featured in the M5) is history in the books of high performance BMW M cars, if the new M3 is the yardstick for things to come.* Watch this blog for an upcoming drive report of the BMW E60 M5.[...]

All New 2007 Toyota Vios

2011-08-16T08:42:20.271-07:00

For Wheels correspondent in Thailand, Mr. Peter Lee, has reported that the all new 3rd generation Toyota Vios will be officially unveiled in Bangkok next week.To be launched well ahead of the upcoming Bangkok International Motor Show 2007 (from March 30 April 8, 2007), the new sub-compact sedan based on the Yaris, is actually a rebadged and tropicalised version of the JDM Toyota Belta. In a departure from the usual Soluna/Soluna-Vios lineage, this popular sedan is no longer based on a cost-cutting ASEAN market platform. For instance, the 1st generation Soluna was based on the 80s Toyota Tercel underpinnings. The second generation Soluna-Vios meanwhile, is pretty much an ASEAN only model which was not available in Japan. Both models obviously had no DNA linkages to the previous Yaris/Echo/Vitz hatchback. On the other hand and ironically - Toyota Vios main competitor, the upcoming all-new 3rd generation Honda City is rumoured to have a bargain-basement ASEAN platform, unrelated to the all-new Jazz/Fit design and structure.A reversal of roles in the cards for both these highly anticipated replacement models? In Malaysia, the all-new 2nd generation Toyota Vios (we never had the sub-standard 1st gen Soluna anyway) is rumoured due as early as Q4 2007.Watch this space for more updates as the new Beltaoops! I mean all-new Vios comes unwrapped in Thailand.[...]

New 2007 Porsche Cayenne in Malaysia

2011-08-16T08:42:20.273-07:00

By Dr LongSpotted at Porsche Centre Glenmarie in Malaysia recently, were the new 2007 model Porsche Cayenne, Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo parked in Auto Eurokars stockyard. The changes seen are quite subtle with no drastic changes made by Porsche. After all, the Cayenne has been a healthy profit-making model for the high performance automaker since its late 2002 debut. As such, the newer design is more evolutionary than revolutionary, although the facelift has certainly made them sleeker. One of the sportiest of SUV around, the new Cayenne cuts a lither and more modern figure now.Definitely more refreshing are the slimmer headlamps and the re-sculpted taillights. A wider and lower stance as visible from the front - has been afforded by the more protruding flanks, flatter headlights, wider-extending air dams and aerodynamic front fascia. Other notable changes are a pair turning/parking lamps now tucked vertically (except for Cayenne Turbo) into the bilateral gaping grilles of the front bumper. Less obvious but sportier now are details such as the dual exhaust tips now jutting out through ovoid openings in the rear bumper, plus what appears to be a posterior lower air diffuser. The new Cayenne now looks even more like a high-riding 996/997, especially for the Cayenne Turbo.Under the hood, even the base Cayenne gets a healthy +40bhp of power boost. Its normally aspirated (N/A) six-cylinder engine sees an increase in cubic capacity from 3.2 to 3.6L, enabling it to churn out 290bhp and 385Nm. 0-100km/h is in a claimed 8.1secs, before topping out at 227km/h.One rung up is the Cayenne S, powered by a 4.8L N/A V8 VarioCam Plus powerplant capable of 385bhp (previously 340bhp) and a bolt-wrenching 500Nm of torque (up from 420Nm). Century sprint is achieved in 6.6secs and this S variant will nudge 252km/h at full pelt. The bad-boy of the family must be the Cayenne Turbo. Its Bi-Turbo VarioCam Plus 4.8L V8 motor now punches out 500bhp (previously 450bhp) and 700Nm (620Nm before). It will shoot from standstill to 100km/h in 5.1secs, on its way to a Vmax of 275km/h.All Cayennes have permanent 4WD system dubbed Porsche Traction Management (PTM). Torque distribution is 38% front and 62% rear with electronically controlled centre differential. Enhanced Porsche Stability Management (PSM) electronic stability program equivalent - is standard on all new Cayennes while Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) adjustable air suspension system - is only standard on the Cayenne Turbo. New bi-xenon headlamps with dynamic cornering light are also fitted standard on the Turbo but a paying option for the others.Prices are expected to start from RM650K, marginally cheaper than the pre-facelift predecessors. The new 2007 Cayenne will be available at Auto Eurokars Porsche Centre Glenmarie showroom from March 10 onwards. [...]

All New 2007 Honda CR-V

2011-08-16T08:42:20.275-07:00

By Dr Long Honda CR-V, the car that started the SUV craze in Malaysia since 1995. With grey imports and reconditioned units selling like hot cakes in the 90s - before then local distributor Kah Motor realized its mass-market appeal. A second generation soon followed in 2001, larger and much improved with K20A i-VTEC 2.0L engine. Based on the 7th gen Civic, it offered lots of space, versatility and reliability.Fast forward to 2007, an all new replacement model will dawn upon the local automotive scene very soon, 8th of March to be specific. Notable changes for this 3rd generation CR-V include a more forward cabin (base of the A-pillar has been shifted forward by 150mm), a seamless and curvy window area, double layer front grilles, projector headlamps, flat blade aero-wipers and of course, all new metal sheets. Most significant will be its engine change...over to an SOHC block! Codenamed R20A, this i-VTEC unit is an extension of the 8th gen Civic 1.8L powerplant. Claimed to be more fuel efficient despite similar output and torque figures compared to the K20A, this 4-pot pushes out 150bhp @ 6,200 rpm and 190Nm @ 4,200rpm. Transmission is an improvement too, now updated to Hondas superb 5-AT. The part-time 4WD is retained, but it is claimed to be an improved version of its proven Advanced-Dual Pump System (A-DPS), strangely dubbed Real-Time 4WD by Honda.Aerodynamics has improved as well, with Cd factor dropping significantly from 0.43 to 0.39. The resultant reduce in air drag will translate to better fuel efficiency, higher top speed and lower wind noise at highway speeds. The all-new CR-V also have a lower centre of gravity by virtue of a lower engine mount, spare tyre in a dedicated cargo floor space and lowered body sills bilaterally. Along with wider treads both front and rear this new model promises better on-road agility and handling (as highlighted in Honda Malaysias teaser ad). Wheelbase however remains the same as its predecessor, at 2620mm. Could this be a re-skinned replacement model still based on the old 7th gen Civics platform? So how much would all these evolutionary advancements add on to its selling price? List price of the outgoing CR-V is RM139,800 at present. Expecting this more solid and classier looking successor to command a little premium over the last model, a safe bet for this SUV would be a tag circa RM150K. Or maybe by some 'miracle' of modern manufacturing cost-savings...the same asking price? All will be revealed by Honda Malaysia very soon Update: Honda Malaysia has announced an OTR price of RM147,800 w.e.f. 8th March 2007.[...]

SLK55 AMG - A Merc to die for

2011-08-16T08:42:20.276-07:00

I couldnt believe my eyes. What luck, standing in front of me, a roadster and not just any roadster. It was a Mercedes SLK. You may still say, so what, seen loads of them around. (Well loads maybe exaggerating a little here) I took a closer look at the badge and I immediately ask the owner, can I have a spin in it.Youre right, your eyes are not deceiving you and the badge has the engine in the bonnet to back it up.Here is my quick take/experience of piloting a Mercedes SLK55 AMG!I was holidaying down under and was visiting a friend when I chanced upon his spanking new SLK55. Ok where do I start, right lets get to the specs first. What makes this so special is the gem of the V8. It has 5439 cubic capacity delivering 360 Hp and wait for this, 510 Nm of torque. Just imagine that amount of torque in a 2 seater roadster. 0-100km/h arrives at a shade below 5 seconds. I didnt have a GTech with me but the manufacturers claim is believable. To top it all off, it came with the ultra smooth shifting 7-Gtronic automatic with AMG speedshift. Now time for the drive. I got into the drivers seat, did the necessary adjustments all this while my heart was pounding. The biggest engine I have ever driven is a 4 liter car in US, so I was really anxious and was very careful with the throttle. So I started off really slow. (My friend was frowning wondering if I knew how to drive) The throttle pedal felt very Merc like i.e. C, E class. Once I got a little use to the steering, I looked at my friend and grin. He read me grin spot on, he gave me the thumbs up and said floor it. (We took the car onto the M4 motorway) Words cant express the feeling. Now I know what they meant by being shot out of a cannon. Being pinned to your seats and just feeling the G force. The throbbing and blurbs from the V8andthefourlargepipesattherear was too intoxicating. You could just die for, each time you planted your foot on the go-pedal.In comparison, I had recently driven a SLK320 (older model) which to me didnt really handle that well for a sports car but this newer model is another beast all together. Steering feel of the old model felt vague and too light for my taste. The newer model has rectified this bane and played the genre of a sports roadster smack on. The car tracked perfectly and you knew where and what the front wheels were doing each time you twirled the steering. We easily hit 100 km/h without even trying and since speed limits are strictly adhered I was very weary all the while. The car felt like a rottweiler tugging at its leash raring to go.The interior is really sporty. I just love the AMG aluminum trims. It really livens up the [...]

Spied: Mercedes-Benz W212 E-Class

2011-08-16T08:42:20.278-07:00

By Dr Long The successor to the current W211 E-Class isn't expected to make its official public appearance until the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. Codenamed unsurprisingly - in an ascending numerical tag - as W212, right hand drive units are predicted to roll off production line only by early 2010. Yet, DaimlerChrysler AG has been caught busy with its development work of late.In trend with current developments seen in the new C-Class (W204) and the facelifted E-Class (W211), Mercedes is expected to standard-fit a more conventional braking system (Adaptive Brake), as the electro-hydraulic SBC set-up has proved expensive to make and maintain (costly recalls and upgrade). Electronic driver aids - ala the W221 S-Class like advanced stability control, night vision assist and lane departure warnings will be standard in the higher end line up.Styling is expected to take leads from the latest S-Class plus the just-premiered C-Class, with more sculpted bumpers, bulging wheel arches and more sharp-edge lines. Design cues like decked-on bonnet (as seen in the B, C and R-Class), chromed window frames and distinct rising flank lines are probably omnipresent too.Engine range is expected to be topped by the same V8 found in the E63 AMG, being normally aspirated. However, it is still too early to predict whether the supercharged M271 all-aluminium engine will soldier on for the entry-level models come 2010. Predictions are abound that Mercedes-Benz will likely introduce direct injection - for its petrol engines with turbocharging as well for the smaller capacity blocks. For the European market mainly, diesel CDI variants will carry over Mercs greener BLUETEC technology. Pictures from channel4.com [...]

Saab 9-3 SportCombi 2.0 LPT Sport+

2011-08-16T08:42:20.280-07:00

By Dr Long SportCombi is Saabs lingo for stationwagon or estate version. Launched in 2006 by Auto Eurokars in Malaysia, the 9-3 SportCombi is an athletic and sporty looking wagon.Somehow, this bootless version appeared sleeker than its sedan brethren, looking much like an extended hatchback, rather than a utilitarian estate.Notable features include an all aluminium hatch, passive rear-wheel steering and frosted rear lamps cover. Another creative innovation is the flat cargo bed which can be folded to form a partition. Great for packing stuffs in the rear and not have them flung about! At the centre of this same floor board, an aeroplane-shaped handle - made of brushed aluminium alloy - really catches the eye. Lift this and pull up the hard board completely, a space saving subwoofer is mounted just underneath. In IKEA fashion, this 10 speaker with its housing fits nicely into the spare wheel. Overall audio performance is however just adequate.Suprisingly too, this estate drove nicer than the sedan, despite sharing the same floorpan (wheelbase et al), engine and transmission. It was very pleasant to go around corners albeit with that little FWD tendency to understeer. Interestingly, this 9-3 variant felt well put together with that stronger cocoon bodyshell. As such, it is reckoned that suspension damping - and thus ride comfort - is improved too, as a result of a stiffer body structure. There is just that appreciable bit more of ride pliancy than the 9-3 sedan. Or could it be that the dampers or suspension load ratings is different for this wagon (seeing that it is heavier than the saloon)? The turbo spools pretty quickly to give a maximum output of 195bhp @ 5,620rpm. Hardly any lag and you could feel an addictive charged power band stretching from 2500rpm onwards. Nicely responsive and torquey in response to a heavier right foot. Torque peaks at 310Nm from a low 2000rpm, and stays constant all the way 5000rpm! Braking performance cannot be faulted, for this is a car capable of 230km/h and a century sprint figures of 8.8 seconds. Despite all these petrol-heads indulgence, in-cabin serenity, comfort and general NVH refinements are not an issue. Saabs [...]

Nissan Livina Geniss in Malaysia

2011-08-16T08:42:20.281-07:00

By Dr LongTan Chong Motor Holdings Bhd. has briefed business/market analysts recently that it will introduce an MPV called Livina Geniss (apart from the Tiida hatch/sedan and the long overdue Cefiro-replacement) in 2007. Based on the first variant of its global platform, this mass-market people carrier has debuted at the Guangzhou International Motor Show in July 2006. The Livina Geniss is a seven-passenger MPV with a frontal visage like Nissan Note/Tone while the rear end somewhat reminisce the VW Polo! Interior pictures are not available at this moment but it should be well designed judging by Nissans clinical, functional and ergonomic interior designs in the now very much ageing - Sentra, Serena and Cefiro. Developed at the Nissan's Atsugi Technical Centre in Japan, the Livina Geniss will be built on a Nissan-Renault Alliance common platform. Based on the concept of a luxurious, yet practical vehicle, the model seats up to seven people and will likely cater to a wide spectrum of motorists needs. The exterior features a bold, modern design and is complemented by a highly flexible interior that provides multiple seating arrangements. It is powered by a 1.8-litre engine codenamed MR18DE. This up-to-date powerplant has C-VTC (Continuous Valve Timing Control) for improved power and torque. Output figures are 127bhp @ 5,200rpm while maximum torque is 174Nm @ 4,800rpm. This all-aluminium engine is also 10% more fuel efficient than its older generation equivalent.Manufacturing base for the Livina Geniss in ASEAN will be at Nissans Indonesian plant in Kota Bukit Indah, located away and south-east of Jakarta. CKD packs will be exported from here and assembly will begin at Tan Chong Motor's new RM191 million automotive plant at Serendah, Selangor, possibly as early as Q2 2007. Tan Chong Motor was reported to be planning to position this all new model higher than the Toyota Avanza, and likely head-on with the Innova. No pricing indications are available, as usual a well kept secret with Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) right up to the final moments just before laun[...]

Brabus CLS B7 Test Drive

2011-08-16T08:42:20.284-07:00

By Dr LongMention the word coupe, a two-door sedan comes to mind. That isuntil 2004 when DaimlerChrysler threw a spanner in the works by introducing a 4-door coupe in the form of Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class. Come to think of it, they had actually done this before blurring the lines of distinction of a body form when they tagged their C-Class hatchback a coupe!Well, so much for nomenclature. Imagine the enthusiasm when Naza-Brabus invited me to review their tuned and kitted version: the CLS B7. Brabus is after all a respectable tuning house with a good 29 years of expertise re-working on numerous 3-pointed stars and counting...This stunning Mercedes-Benz C219 shares the same 2854mm E-Class wheelbase, albeit with longer overhangs - especially at the front making it longer by about 105mm. The CLS is also wider, for both tracks and body making it visually larger than the W211.Looking sleek and menacing in black, the B7s flared front wheel arches runs backwards into a distinctive band just below the beltline, culminating in a very shapely arc to the rear. Within the wheel arches lurks massive Brabus Monoblock VI dual-spoke design alloys: 8.5J x 19. Chromed window surrounds making a comeback in most new MB models lends a highlight of classy elegance to the roof-window arch and beltline. Interiorly, the dashboard looks more British than Teutonic, with a big chunk of wood splashed across it. Instruments panel looks like they come right off the E-Class production line save for the bulging pods layout with distinctive chrome rings. Similarly, parts like the Thermotronic A/C controls, power windows switches, column stalks, dash buttons, radio-CD, door handles and ashtrays are very familiar looking too. Conversely, the [...]

Mercedes-Benz All-New C-Class (W204) in Malaysia

2011-08-16T08:42:20.286-07:00

By Dr LongHaving just had its world premiere recently, it would be now commonly asked among the many Mercedes-Benz owners and fans alike: When will this new replacement model come to our shores?Sources close to DaimlerChrysler Malaysia (DCM) and Cycle & Carriage Bintang (CCB) have hinted towards a Q4 local launch, possibly as early as October 2007. Sales and deliveries are likely to begin in CKD form too for obvious competitive pricing advantage. This fourth generation baby-Mercedes sedan (if the 190-series is to be considered 1st gen) is wider and longer with a useful increase of 45mm in wheelbase dimension to 2760mm. Interior space and legroom, especially for the rear passengers, are likely more generous in tandem.Petrol engines are largely carried over from the W203, somewhat a surprise (disappointing even! - for some Merc enthusiasts) considering that DC AG and its AMG division have expressed in a media statement of their plans to abandon the trusty Kompressor (supercharger) for a more-advanced turbocharger. It isnt that the supercharged M271 is coarse or rough, a lot of W203 and W211 (even a BMW E90 325i owner) owners agree that its pretty smooth for a 4-pot. Well, maybe just a bit hoarse (vocally) at higher revs/high speed cruising compared to the 2.5 and 3.0V6, found respectively in the C230 and E280 - and that's to be expected. Whats desired for this complete makeover are probably crispier/quicker throttle response and lower end-flatter-higher torque afforded by the new generation low-inertia turbocharger (read: quick spooling, lag-free). An added bonus if coup[...]
