Ash Wednesday

Tue, 12 Feb 2013 10:15:00 +0000

February 13, 2013 is Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the Season of Lent. It is a day of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is required from ages 18-60, one full meal and abstinence is from age 14, refraining from eating meat.Fasting is primarily the act of willingly abstaining from some or all food, drink, or both, for a period of time while Abstinence is a voluntary restraint from indulging in bodily activities that are widely experienced as giving pleasure. (Wikipedia)Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Season of lent for Catholics. This is being observed by placing ashes on the foreheads, as a sign of mourning and repentance to God. Ash Wednesday normally takes place during the Mass or Service of worship. The ashes used are from the palms from the previous years. This palms are being burned and mixed with holy water and blessed. While placing ashes on the foreheads by a priest, minister or officiating layperson say's "Remember that thou art dust and to dust thou shall return" or "Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel". Marking of an ashes remind's us of our sins and with this it's a way of remembering and regretting things we have done and asked forgiveness to Jesus Christ. Marking ashes in cross sign is also reminding us that through Jesus Christ who has nailed on the cross, we have gain forgiveness of our sins."Have a Blessed/Holy Ash Wednesday"Like this post? Thu, 04 Oct 2012 01:00:00 +0000

A Tourist Destination on Wheels A Splash Back to the Glory Days of the Pinoy JeepneyLast September 20, 2012, the initial salvo of the Jeepney Arts Festival dubbed as the On-the-Spot Jeepney Painting was launched at the SM Mall of Asia Open Grounds where 50 jeepneys were transformed from bare metal carriages to vibrant vehicles bannering art and tourism.Filipinos from various sectors—including artists from the Circle of Friends Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization for disabled individuals—came together to do their share in restoring and dressing up the iconic vehicle back to its effervescent form in the unwavering spirit of bayanihan.Volunteers smeared the walls and even roofs of the jeepneys with images depicting the country's tourism destinations that evoke our rich cultural heritage and foster awareness as to why it is, indeed, more fun to travel in the Philippines. The Jeepney Arts Festival has indeed taken us one step forward in reviving the jeepney—not only as the most popular means of transportation in the country, but as the Philippines’ bona fide iconic vehicle.###Jeepney Arts Festival (on-the-spot Jeepney Painting and Grand Jeepney Parade)Press Release courtesy of GeiserMaclang Marketing Communications Inc.www.geisermaclang.com[...]

In Loving Memory of my Father

Tue, 25 Sep 2012 01:00:00 +0000

In Loving Memory of Ernesto Jiz Jardeleza December 16, 1932 - + August 16, 2012September 25, 2012 - As today marks the 40th day of my father's death, let me share to all my valuable readers my Eulogy/Funeral Speech during the burial day of my father last August 27, 2012. A message of reflection, remembrances, praises, testimonial and thanksgiving. As I stand in front of all the people who have gathered at Jaro Cathedral Church after the funeral mass of my father to deliver my Eulogy/Speech. I was very much overwhelm to see a lot of people attended. Not just inside the Cathedral itself even at our house before going to Jaro Cathedral Church. There were  lot of people inside and outside of our house waiting and lot of people also joined us walking through a procession from our house going to Jaro Cathedral Church and as we arrived at Jaro Cathedral there were lot of people who are already waiting there too.I just couldn't  understand what i'm feeling at that moment, I felt happy in tears in a way to see a lot of people, seeing how my father is being loved and known by so many people.Procession from our house to Jaro Cathedral ChurchJaro Metropolitan CathedralFrom Left: Msgr. Claudio Sale, Fr. Lester Villa, Main Celebrant - Fr. Ever , Fr. Mau Silva, Fr. Alex Cerania, Fr. Peter GuarinEulogy / Funeral Speech Papa was known to be called as Agot, Erning or Tay Nesto by his friends, cousins, nieces, nephews and all people he knows. He is a hardworking father, a farmer and a butcher. He is also a good provider, strict-disciplinarian, active churchgoer and a generous papa to our family as well as to all people who needs his help.In spite of being strict in the family, I felt so scared and nervous of him, but as I grow older I understand and realized the valuable lessons and important teachings in life to help me become stronger, independent and mature in life.Papa had a stroke last November 2003. He had left sided paralysis, difficulty in walking and discomfort in sleeping. He could stand and walk with the help of his “baston” and wheelchair. Due to his illness he has to undergo continuous rehab therapy three times a week and daily exercises at home.My sister Timy who used to take care my dad when he got stroke. She’s the one who take his daily blood pressure monitor, giving tons of medications and follow-up his doctor’s visitation. Until after 4 months her employment to U.S. was approved. Timy informed and updated my papa that she needs to leave Iloilo as soon as possible to work in the U.S. at first he was so hesitant to let her go because of his condition. No excitement, blank faces, teary eyes and sadness you can really see in his face. But finally, he decided to let Timy pursue her career in America. I rest assured that if Papa is not sick he would be the happiest person and proud to hear that his daughter is going to reach her American dream. In absence of my sister Timy, I took over her responsibility and I was trained by her on how to take care of my Dad before she left. I felt so bad and sad when she’s gone. Every 6pm I usually stayed at his room during dinner time (my usual daily routine), giving his medication, taking blood pressure, talked and stayed with him until he goes to sleep.Last March of this year (2012) papa was diagnosed of Cirrhosis of the liver. His tummy and legs are big, he had some mouthy odor and he even experienced mentally disoriented. With the help of the doctors, with the medication and lot’s of prayers from his family and from other people, papa regain his mental ability after a couple of weeks, it was truly a miraculous thing.Because of his Cirrhosis papa couldn’t walk anymore with his "baston" even with the help of his caregivers and he even could not stand. His caregivers have to carry him out from bed to his chair and also to his car. Despite of his inability to walk he still do[...]

Lucerne, Switzerland

Thu, 09 Aug 2012 01:00:00 +0000

Lucerne, SwitzerlandThe City. The Lake. The Mountains.Switzerland is one of the favorite stop-over in a grand tour Europe and one of the best country I loved the most. Switzerland is known for its mountains, rolling hills and large lakes. The watch making capital of the world, a "Swiss Made" is being mark on it. Switzerland is also known as one of the world's best chocolate production, swiss variety and "Swiss Cheese". Switzerland is also the official home of the Swiss Army Knife, the Victorinox and Wenger.Lucerne is the gateway to Central Switzerland situated in Lake Lucerne, the most populous city. Embedded with an impressive mountainous panoramic view, a postcard perfect city. Its attractions, souvenirs, watch shop and its beautiful lakeside is an excellent and perfect destination for many travelers. While on the coach, we have passed a lot of beautiful scenery such as mountains and lakes, very picturesque. I just couldn't stop clicking my camera. The place was so refreshing as I could imagine. Impressive and charming. As our coach stop in a gasoline station plus convenient store, far away I could see a beautiful Swiss alps covered with snow, Alps mountain range. Looks like I'm so near to it. Very amazing and beautiful!Lucerne is a beautiful small city in the heartland of Switzerland and became a center of Swiss history and legend. Lucerne is a heavily touristed destination. One of the safest cities compared with other cities in Europe. Ameron Hotel Flora LuzernAs we arrived at the city of Lucerne, we check-in on our booked hotel, Ameron Hotel Flora Luzern. A perfect hotel location in the heart of the city, a walking distance to Reuss River and the old city centre. The room is fresh and contemporarily in style. Equipped with television, minibar and wireless internet free of charge. Staying at this hotel, everything was so near.Time for us to take a walk around the city, passing  to this Old Swiss House made us stop for some photo op, it's a restaurant. A very nice one.Carving of the Dying LionThe carving of a dying lion "The Lion Monument" is located in a small park. This carving commemorates hundred of Swiss Guards who were massacred during the French Revolution."The most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world" by: Mark TwainLapin RestaurantWe had our dinner at Lapin Restaurant located in the centre of Lucerne, few walks from our hotel were we stayed. One of the city's leading restaurant which serves modern European cuisine specializing in regional dishes. An average 3 course meal, just like in Italy bread is always a given menu. For starters a pumpkin potato soup next is fish with sauce and vegetables and lastly a dessert which I forgot to get a photo of it :)After dinner we stroll along some shops, some shops are already close since it's already late but still the sun still shine. Branded shops scattered around the city centre of Lucerne like Bally, Hermes and more. The city is quite peaceful but there are some souvenirs shops that are still open for business. We took some time to buy souvenirs and I even brought a Victorinox swiss army knife, price is very cheap here. Just make sure to put  in your check in luggage and not on your hand carry bag as this will surely be confiscated in the airport.Watch shops are everywhere here at Lucerne, all swiss made brand watch are definitely here. Cheaper one to the most expensive one. One of the famous watch shop here in Lucerne is the Bucherer, here you can find a whole lot of swiss watch brand in just one store. Tag Heuer, swatch, rolex, chopard, longings, rado, tudor, gucci and a whole lot more.Reuss RiverThe City's most famous Landmark - Chapel Bridge over Ruess, Lucerne SwitzerlandThe fourth largest river in Switzerland.I can simply walk everywhere around the city safe, I[...]

Featured Guest Post: Boracay as the World's Best Island

Fri, 27 Jul 2012 01:00:00 +0000

Boracay as the World's Best Island by: Ann Joy PerezLast year, Boracay Island in the Philippines ranked fourth as the “World’s Best Island.” This year, Boracay has landed on the number one spot for the same category. The result was based on an online survey conducted by Travel+Leisure, an international magazine. In Boracay, tourists and visitors can do a lot more exciting activities than enjoying the amazing view, cool waters and fine sand in the beach. In this article, we will talk about the top five activities in the world’s best island.1. ParasailingIf you’re one who’s afraid of heights, forget about that for a moment and face your fear! Parasailing in Boracay can be counted as one of the best ultimate joyride in life and it’s worth the price (about PHp 1500). You’ll get to experience your face going against the wind with the speedboat hauling you above sea level. Open your eyes wide to see a bird’s eye view of everything below when you’re about 30 minutes up in the air attached to a special parachute with extended wings. People say it’s safer than in Phuket, Thailand.2. Riding the Banana BoatThe banana boat is one of the most famous boats in Boracay. It’s an inflated giant banana that takes riders to feel the shrill of an adrenaline rush in the middle of the sea. With the capacity to carry five to nine passengers clad with life vests, the banana-shaped water vessel starts slow and gathers speed almost to toss riders off balance. Prepare only PHp 150-250 per person for a good 15 minutes of extreme screaming and laughs. The more people in the group, the cheaper the individual charge gets and the more, the merrier!3. Island-hopping As said, there’s more to Boracay than the beach itself. While in there, get the opportunity to visit the smallislets such as Crocodile Island and Crystal Cove and surrounding beaches likePuka Shell Beach and Panoly Beach. You’ll get to those places by renting a private boat, and often boatmen charge tourists PHp 2000 to 2500 for small boats accommodating up to eight people for three hours. For larger groups with up to 12 riders, expect to pay a max amount of PHp 4000 and for even larger ones that can carry about 25 people, an additional of PHp 2000 is requested. In those islands, there are different animals and unique elements to be found. You can also go shopping for souvenirs, buy fresh seafoods and have them cooked later. In the beaches, you can go snorkeling, scuba diving, fish-feeding, and swimming.4. Sunset-watchingSunsets in Boracay are really the best in the world. While waiting for the sunset, you can kill time by sun-bathing, picture-taking, waking along the beach, and swapping stories with your friends. This activity is by far the cheapest as it costs nothing monetary-wise. In return, you get to witness a dramatic change of the sky’s colors and the horizon—a natural masterpiece you should not miss.5. ATV RidingThe ATV is a motorbike that you can rent for PHp500 to 600 an hour. This, however, requires you to have a driver’s license. There are five stops that you can go to.The most famous of them are the aviary where you visit the Philippine birds including the bats with an entrance fee ofPHp 70. Another is the ocean tower when you can have a 360-degree view of the whole island, for only PHp 50.Boracay surely is a place that we can call our own paradise here in the Philippines. It is a haven we can proudly boast to other countries. Thus we should take care of it and also keep the name up high in cloud 9 not only for the betterment of our country and economy, but also of dear Mother Nature.Author Bio: Ann Joy Perez is an alumna from Arel[...]

Milan: World of Fashion

Wed, 18 Jul 2012 01:00:00 +0000

Milan, Italy World of Fashion in the Capital of Glamour and StyleMilan is truly a fashion capital of Italy. Milan's fashion district provides the best shopping opportunities in Europe. True shopaholics headed to Milan, Italy. For people with limited budget, it's fun to window shop like we did. Let's just discover and admire the architectural structure as Milan has the world's most beautiful cathedral know as the Duomo di Milano.Galleria Vittorio Emanuele IIThe magnificent five story high Galleria Victtorio Emanuele II covered with a glass and iron roof. The Galleria became the favorite meeting place in the city. It's structure is very impressive for its dimension which formed like a cross. Two iron and glass covered the walkways meet an octagonal central piazza glass dome. The gallery is decorated with plenty of patriotic symbols, mosaics on the floor below the dome. The four mosaics just below the central dome represent four parts of the world: Europe, America, Africa and Asia. The Galleria is the most popular attraction and very crowded with locals and tourist for shopping and snapping pictures of the spectacular architecture. Truly beautiful galleria which really struck me and I simply loved it that way it was made, very simple yet very striking and I can't still believe I'm stepping in the Fashion Capital of Italy. This is exactly what fashion is all about. Here you could find cafes, restaurant and upscale stores... Branded shop like  Prada, Versace, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and so much more... This is shopping! The entrance from the Piazza del Duomo is framed by Monumental Triumphal Arch of the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele IISouvenirs are everywhere outside the Galleria or along the Piazza del Duomo. They have wide selection of beautiful souvenirs to choose from, from magnets, keychains, plates, ashtray and so much more. Since we can't afford so much for the branded stuff, we took are time here for souvenir hunting of magnets. Prices starts at 4euro and above.Milan Cathedral / Duomo di MilanoThe Duomo di Milano is one of the world's largest churches and Milan's magnificent cathedral. The Duomo is located at the center of Milan. I was really mesmerize to this very beautiful cathedral with its white front facade, this would be my personal favorite cathedral in Italy. Comparing to other churches I've been and seen in Italy, Milan Cathedral is the grandest among other cathedral. The Duomo is decorated with an amazing number of beautiful sculpted statues and spires.Pigeons are surrounded throughout the  Piazza del Duomo. There are people in the piazza that gave you bird seeds by hand to feed the pigeons and a closer encounter with the pigeons for picture purposes but in the later part, they will ask you 1euro for every bird seeds they hand on you. If they hand it on you five times, they will ask you to pay them 5euros for it. Be aware of that when visiting here, don't accept it if you don't intent to pay.  As we personally taught they are giving it for free or just sharing it for they didn't even say a word that they sell it in the first place. That's how they do business out of feeding those pigeons :) Anyways It's good to play around with the pigeons and took some snapshot! I personally enjoyed it :)Visitors can take a fascinating trip to the Duomo's roof through steps or elevator in a small fee. We didn't take a trip up the Duomo's roof, we just explore more of the beautiful facade of the Duomo and enjoy the scenic that surrounds the piazza.Since we still have time and while waiting for other people in our group we grab some yummy gelato w[...]

Cafe Havana and Spicy Fingers

Wed, 11 Jul 2012 01:00:00 +0000

Cafe Havana and Spicy Fingers Pre-Birthday Bar Hopping Spending a few days in Manila and spent some quality time in a bar in relation of my pre-birthday celebration. After having a sumptuous fine dining dinner at MESA Filipino Moderne Restaurant, which the food here is very delicious. Now it's time for us to do some bar hopping. Loving the Night Life at Greenbelt, Makati. Good spots with best deals on cocktails and local beers for a happy hour trip.Cafe HAVANACafe Havana is a very popular restaurant and bar at Greenbelt 3 Makati. They have inside and outside location, but more people tend to stay outside during night and watch people passed by. They have live bands inside the cafe but still you can enjoy it while listening outside. We just had a pitcher of Mojito (php995), the taste was a bit strong but I love it while listening to the music, watching a game on the LCD TV, enjoying the surroundings, watch people passed by and having some chit chat conversation. This place are mostly surrounded by foreign costumers and I could sense this place swarms with prostitutes. Some ladies would occupy a table alone, order a single drink and stay for hours and wait for someone to join them and if there someone, mostly foreign man would start to buy them a drink and so on....Better not to go here alone, they might think your one of them and you might get hook-up on it. Make sure to go here in group to enjoy. The place is nice, cozy and very entertaining as well. After a pitcher of drinks we decided to find another bar to try and explore :) Spicy FingersSpicy Fingers offers an impressive happy hour of selected drinks and yummy appetizers while enjoying the band of "Red Light" (hope got the band name right). Enjoying the grooving sound of the band makes us dance all night.  The place is so nice and it has two floor, better be early to get a great view of the band nightly on the ground floor.Over a bottle of beer and a vodka (san-mig premium php130, Vodka cruiser php230) and a yummy Sticky Nachos (php400) oh I love the taste of their sticky nachos, very much recommended. I was really entertained by the band songs and dance. I really enjoyed that night and we even came back. It was a fun experience and I considered to be a memorable one :)Thank you for visiting and taking time to read my blogYour comments are always welcome and appreciated :)Cafe HAVANAG/F Greenbelt 3 Ayala Center, Makati City, Philippines(02) 757-4370Spicy FingersG/F Greenbelt 2, Ayala CenterMakati City, Philippines(02) 729-8761Like this post?
