Book Review - Cleopatra A Life Posted By : Scott A Leger

Wed, 28 Sep 2011 00:00:00 -0400

Cleopatra VII, the last pharaoh of Ancient Egypt, the reincarnation of the Egyptian God Isis, remains a popular traditional figure in the Western culture. Her legacy survives in numerous works of art and literature including William Shakespeare's tragedy Antony and Cleopatra and the 1963 film Cleopatra. Schiff has portrayed Cleopatra's character in a contemporary way, most relevant to this 21st century. Schiff's writing style is very subtle, meaningful and full of insight that makes the book a compelling read.

At one time or another I think we all have actions we are repeating or addictions we are indulging in that, if we don't stop, it will kill us. At the very least, these actions will keep us from living the life that would really make us happy. I also believe that breaking through these issues can be nearly impossible until we're armed with the right information and tools to help us break through. Change has often been a frustrating and elusive thing for me.

Indigenous Women and Their Position in Nineteenth-century Ecuadorian History Posted By : Allan Smith

Mon, 13 Sep 2010 00:00:00 -0400

While O'Connor explicitly states that this book is about Indigenous women and their position in nineteenth-century Ecuadorian history, she argues that it is not women's history. Rather, she tells us that gender analysis is the central feature of the book. This is a claim often made by authors exploring gender issues, but seldom accomplished. Using court records, O'Connor argues that the close association of men with agriculture gave them higher social status than women. The difference in the economic and social meaning of marriage on the haciendas illustrates her point. Marriage provided men with increased status and power over their wives.

A book review of Textile League Baseball: South Carolina's Mill Teams, 1880-1955 by Thomas K. Perry. I accidently stumbled upon Thomas Perry's book, "Textile League Baseball," while conducting some research on a bit of hometown trivia. Oddly, in the 1950's and 60's you could hear the Chicago White Sox broadcasts in my hometown of Greenville, SC on radio station, WMRB-1490 AM.

Tue, 02 Mar 2010 00:00:00 -0500

Do you ever feel like you're being lied to? I feel that way most of the time. I don't watch the news anymore for this reason. There's an old expression in Journalism that says, "If it leads, it's bleeds." I feel that the more I watch the news, the more negative I become, but it's not just the news that does this to me, it's also being surrounded by negative people.
