Depending on how many years it has been since you have done ballet, or any kind of dance related exercise, I always say go for it. You may have to call several local studios to find an adult ballet class that is right for you. You may worry about the dance wear dress codes and if you will want to comply. If you are overweight, or have lost your flexibility, you probably feel very self conscious.

Myofascial release is achieved by relieving muscle tension, and fascial tension. The fascia is the wrapping that goes around, and connects the muscle groups in the body. If this fascia, which has the quality of plastic wrap, or a cobweb like wrapping, has experienced impact or tearing, it is no longer slippery-slidey, but has become abrasive and sticky on its surfaces. Repetitive stretching will not necessarily help get you more flexible. Often this tight hamstring condition is accompanied by low back pain. Regardless of the flexibility normally experienced in the low back, it will be compromised by myofascial tension coming from the hamstrings.

Often, some area of the hips in particular can become imbalanced because of a postural misalignment. It seems like nothing gives those sore muscles relief. In many cases, you will see a dancer's or cheerleader's postural habit when they are not dancing or practicing. There are variations on the lack of the postural plumb line, which is a line going straight down through the body, through the natural curves of the neck and spine. Ideally, the ankles, knees, hips, waist, and shoulders are all stacked neatly. A tight area in the psoas, the muscle that lifts the legs to the front, will pull the low back out of alignment. The back will look swayed, and the thighs will turn inward.

Some students aren't allowed to, though they are allowed to use tape. Some point out that professional dancers do not use padding in their pointe shoes - although that is certainly not 100% correct. Some argue that students won't get stronger if they use pads for support. Well, pads do not give support at all, they give a cushion against the abrasion and pressure of the toe shoes. So strength has nothing to do with it.

For the lower body, to get your leg up to the back, to do an arabesque, you need to get more flexible in the psoas muscle. This is a postural support muscle that runs from the top of your thigh to the spine. Attached at the front of the spine, this muscle controls the bending of the body at the hip joint. (Say you sneeze and one of your knees lifts up when your abdomen contracts. You bend at the hip joint). If flexible, this muscle also allows your spine to bend at the waist, when you raise your leg to the back. There is a REALLY simple exercise you can do, to stretch this large, important muscle.

It focuses on training the feet to point, extending the ankle joint as far as possible, to force up the instep into its maximum arch. However, the toes, next for the completion of the movement, can point, and stay long and strong, or curl over. This is what you want to avoid. The toes can follow the curve of the arch, but not curl in their own joints. This should have been the way you have always pointed your toes in soft leather ballet shoes. Many dance students try to feel more arch by curling their toes over, but this does not help ankle flexibility. It puts the toes into a position, that inside pointe shoes, will create blisters as the top of the joints press into the stiff box of the toe shoe. Ouch.

Do not compare what you can do to your favorite ballerina and what she can do. Press ups, or rises, can be done perfectly by you, now. As long as you understand the form and the movement, you will do it right. Sitting in a chair, you do not have your body weight on your foot. Repeating the ballet movements exactly as you will do them in pointe shoes, you prepare your brain and your feet to do these actions precisely, safely, and in a way that you will get stronger and prevent dance injuries.

A young dancer, or an adult ballet beginner, may take two or three years of classes, and be constantly sickling in, or curving the ankle inwards towards the center of the body, or "fishing", or curving the ankle outwards away from the center of the body. On a working, or presenting leg, where there is no weight on the foot, it really does not matter. But on a supporting leg, the leg that bears the body weight, it certainly does matter - especially if you want to dance in pointe shoes.
