Emerging mobile e-reader technologies for school library services provision : junction, support and breadth in their adoption

The use of networked mobile gargets by students in Zimbabwean schools and other parts of the world is heavily disputed.    21St century is the era that has being  bombarded with technology that is envisaged as the most powerful means of communication where   Information can be obtained rapidly and instantaneously. Davis (2012) posits that mobile phone in Africa is now outpacking that of Latin America , making Africa the second-largest mobile –phone market in the world behind Asia , according to November 2011 report released by London based Groupe Speciale Mobile Association. It is against this backdrop that the growth and prevalence of mobile e-book technology than heavily rely on mobile gargets and networked  technology, open educational resources  is growing at an exponential rate in Zimbabwe and Africa. In Ghana and South Africa , a lot of effort has been done on the adoption of mobile e-reader technology in elementary-school age children who have rarely seen more than a handful of books are now using e-readers to access the whole library (Ash and Davis, 2012). Back to Zimbabwe, Econet has unveiled a programme that allows school going children to access the whole libraries from the push of the button. Though a lot of resistance has being felt in the implementation of e-resources in the education sector, people are beginning to realise the need to be connected to the network of resources.   Mobile technology is opening up a world of books and academic concepts to students in Africa , providing teachers in rural areas schools with more professional development and support and helping government gather vital statistics about education systems (Davis, 2012).

Questions

  1.  What is the rate of use of mobile e-readers by students and teachers for library services provision in your School learning context?
  2. What value does mobile e-reader technology have on library service provision in the school learning context?
  3. How suitable and sustainable is the mobile e-reader technology in a school learning context?
  4. What are the barriers for the adoption of mobile e-reader technology in the school learning context?
  5. How are the institutional and national policies affect the implementation of mobile  e-reader technology  adoption in schools?
  6. What factors contributed to students’ successful use of mobile e-books to support their learning?

For the past two years I have been working on Several Products like Cloud Computing, Instance Messaging Products. i was passionate to develop product that can transform  Rural Education to next level in India.. There is vast difference in education style in Rural and Urban schools... Urban Schools in India are very competitive in Technology, Science and Maths..They are very near to all competitive Resources but the rural school  Education entirely different. The difference between city and village student not in terms of brain or development but their initial environment, skills, learning ability, availability of infrastructure, and access to different facilities. How Digital or E – libraries can change the education in Rural Schools in India.. Information and Communication Technology has revolutionized the concept of libraries. A 'digital library' comprises digital collections, services and infrastructure to support lifelong learning, research, scholarly communication as well as preservation and conservation of our recorded knowledge. This is the era for visual learning. People are changing the way they read because of the developments in digital technologies. Digital Libraries are very much essential for Schools & highers educations like Engineering, Science  to understand the concepts with the help of Visualizations. Majority of India still lives in villages even though the number of rural students attending schools is rising, Quality and access to education is the major concern in rural schools as there are fewer committed teachers, lack of proper text books and learning material in the schools. Though rural schools exist, but when compared to Urban Private schools then quality is a major issue.  Revolution of E Libraries & E Books: Availability of Text Books, Tutorials, videos, Audio Lessons  in Digital Formats  can reform the entire Rural education in India. Advances in digital technologies  allows educators and teachers to redefine visual learning. By  combining image technologies and teaching, schools can gradually integrate visual teaching with digital learning. Teachers & Students in schools can  utilize digital images and charts to aide learners and staff by establishing a knowledge  base Students can now  access the E library using  Tablets or Computers and can gain much quality of Education then before using Visual thinking   Visual thinking is a learning style where the learner better understands and retains information when ideas, words and concepts are associated with images. Research tells us that the majority of students in a regular classroom need to see information in order to learn it. Some common visual learning strategies include creating graphic organizers, diagramming, mind mapping, outlining  etc..  I was planning to distribute simple E Library products to rural Schools as my social responsibility..  Simple E Library - Products for development of Rural Education.    Simple HTML E Library Product                                        Click Here    Open Source Products with Zero cost                            Click Here     Cloud based E Library Solution       [...]

The era of being fast. Free Touch Typing resources for being on the TOP!

Oh, I guess we don't! But we most probably have to try to adjust it if we are planning to fit the needs and the requirements of society. One small part of being fast is very topical in our everyday life. So topical that it is what I’m doing right now - typing! When we look around in our workplaces, we most probably see people who are well prepared to work with computers, but there is a great amount of people who are not. Maybe it is our grandmother, who wants to be up-to-date, maybe it is a friend who has never had the necessity to work fast with a computer, maybe it is a kid who wants to learn to type correctly and efficiently. Thanks to some enthusiasts, there are many great free resources, which can help people to improve their skills. Personally my favourite tool is TypingStudy.com http://www.TypingStudy.com is a simple, free web-based tool for learning to type. It has a great daily demand from users all over the world; mostly library users and scholars. Typing Study contains 15 well prepared and carefully designed lessons, a speed test and games from which one can learn to type step-by-step, monitor his or her own progress and have fun. It is translated into 24 languages. It supports QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY and even DVORAK keyboard layouts. It is developing each day and soon will be available in many more languages as well.   There are a lot more other free resources who offer similar service. However, simplicity and meanwhile great functionality wins over among all the resources. In the link below you can see a compilation and comparison of different free touch typing websites, which may be useful.  http://www.typingstudy.com/list_of_free_touch_typing_software_and_online_resources Whichever one chooses is up to him or her. However, one thing is clear – being good at typing is not irrelevant. Some employers may even ask about the speed of typing in the interview, while many employees indicate the number of words per minute in their CV. Although it most probably won’t be a game changing skill, it is important enough to try to test yourself or develop current capabilities.   You may think – and this is it? I don’t think it’s important! Maybe the reasons below will convince you! Typing faster means you can: 1)    Socialize online – tests show that people, who type faster can communicate at least 2 times more effectively in chats and social media 2)    Saving time – depending on the specification of your job, type faster can save you 4-46 hours per month. Nowadays, as we know, time is money. Or you can just spend the saved time with your family eating icecream ;) 3)    Being up-to-date – When you type fast and can manage to work with the technologies in a persuasive manner, people will perceive you as a professional and efficient worker. 4)    Love your fingers – using the right techniques will eliminate chances of getting inflammation, Carpal Tunnel syndrome and other illnesses connected with non-ergonomic environment.   No matter what one’s reasons are, these free touch typing services can help many people – whether it is your friend, grandmother or a colleague. In conclusion let’s mention the words of He[...]

Stress; Burnout; Technostress and Libraries

Dear All,

Last week, my laptop crashed, my laptop got a "blue screen of death". As marvelous as all our technology is, chronic malfunctions and crashes and the constant demand to keep up might account for the fact that at least one in four of us will admit to physically assaulting a device. Technology is changing so fast that when we are adopting one version of the software, the other version comes out.Technology is the way which extends humans ability. It is very difficult to obtain a precise definition of technology. It is generally accepted that "technology" is more than just a collection of physical products of science. "Technology" is the link between society and its tools. The creation of computer software and hardware, telecommunications, databases, and the Internet has affected society as a whole, and particularly higher education by giving people new productivity options and changing the way we work.

A mental snowball occurs whenever we allow negative thoughts to build up and race out of control. Its our mental equivalent of our tires being stuck in the mud.The more we spin the brain, the deeper we are stuck. Although mental pressure at work happens mostly to me but I lower my stress with shopping, music , traveling and so on...

Oh ..! it was technostress...! I define technostress in two terminologies:

[A] TECHNOSTRESS : TECH + KNOW + STRESS

[B] TECHNOSTRESS : TECHNO + NO + STRESS

What causes Stress by Technology in libraries

  • The Rate of Change of the Technology
  • The Lack of Standardization
  • The Lack of Training Individuals on the Equipment
  • The Reliability of the Technology
  • The Increased Workload Placed on Each Individual
  • The Changing role of Librarians

Ways to Conquer the beast:

1. Manage your energy not your time. We are not running in a marathons everyday yet we try to do the equivalent at our work.

2. Take few minutes relaxation break.

3. Walk outside, take deep breath.

4. Program your computer to clear your temporary files of ur computer device at every 30 days.

5. Keep the status of your gmail or facebook in "Busy" or "Invisible" mode.

6. Turn of rings, pings, dings anything that sings.

7. Work with your team to determine the important and urgent from the unimportant issues.

8. At the end of the day, shut the door of your office, turn-off your computer. Reset yourself and be ready for the new day.

Felt like sharing it with you all... Do you have any experience with technologies ... do share..

warm regards,

Ajit P.

‘Common sense’ can benefit from instruction

In her piece titled, “Don’t Be That Guy (in the Workplace),” she presents “common sense” advice for making and keeping a good impression on-the-job.

As a woman on the autism spectrum (and also a fledgling library professional), I struggle to decipher the “unspoken” rules in unfamiliar situations. Luppert’s essay suggests this difficulty is not limited to the autism spectrum alone, but encompasses the broader population.

I appreciate Luppert for recognizing the value in providing explicit instruction for what people are “assumed” to know. As more people become open to the concept that “common sense” behaviors are taught, the more tolerant they will be and more willing to correct instead of condemn social lapses.

“The library is the center and the heart of community.

“Through shared resources, through providing a safe space, and through seeking out opportunities to reach into those places which have otherwise been overlooked or forgotten about, libraries do a hell of a lot more than provide books. ...

“The biggest issue with equating the library with a Netflix for books is that it sends a false message that libraries are worth little more than $8 or $12 or $20 a month. That the services offered in libraries are little more than options to which people can subscribe, rather than actual services anyone can utilize at any time.”

The library profession is in the midst of a paradigm shift, thanks to technology and its impact on literacy and learning. With it have come new leadership roles for librarians, roles that require knowledge and skills not traditionally taught in library school programs. Blended librarianship is one way to embrace these new roles. Join Amanda Hovious as she discusses her journey toward becoming blended, and her perspective on what librarianship will look like in the (not too distant) future.

Dr. Sandra Hirsh, director of the School of Library and Information Science (SLIS) at San Jose State University, was recently interviewed for a post on the Next Libraries blog. During the interview, Hirsh discussed what it means to earn a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) degree in a field that is rapidly changing.

“There’s a huge range of opportunities for someone with a degree in our field, and it’s constantly evolving,” said Hirsh. “There are so many interesting areas—digital asset management, information architecture, virtual reference services, and social media." Hirsh believes there are "a whole suite of opportunities" to engage with information of all different types. As an information professional, “how you think about and apply your skills is only limited by your imagination,” said Hirsh.

2013-10-20T08:06:54.000Z

Dear Colleagues,

In the name and mandated by the Hungarian section of the conference, I would like to express our gratitude to all organizers. Special thanks go to Steve Hargadon, who put a great deal of work in helping the section to come to existence. He did it with admirable patience and good humor.

As I said I am writing on behalf of Hungarian librarians, LIS faculty members and students to thank you all.
