I agree absolutely that private companies are allowed to set whatever policies they want (within the law, anyway). I don't like Facebook's TOS, so I never joined.

I don't think that pointing out possible privacy issues and other consequences is necessarily fear-mongering or an attempt to get us all to isolate ourselves in caves. The world, physical or virtual, is a dangerous place. That doesn't mean we should lock ourselves away, but it *does* mean we should take reasonable precautions and be aware of risks so that we can make informed decisions.

There *is* a certain irony in the fact that the government is posting a warning about social networking sites, when one concern those of us in the US have is that our government can demand all that information from US-based social networks pretty much at will.
