Take a Sneak Peek Inside Tommy Hilfiger's Apartment

Tue, 19 Oct 2010 17:13:07 PDT

Tommy and Dee Hilfiger show off their flair for fashion and decor in their new apartment at the Plaza in New York.Perhaps it’s only fitting that the Hilfigers’ new home is perched on one of the highest floors of one of New York’s most iconic landmarks, the Plaza Hotel.“We tried to incorporate as much of the history of the building as we could,” says Tommy Hilfiger's wife Dee of the luxurious two-floor condo they bought in 2008 and the hotel’s roster of storied guests. “From Marilyn Monroe to the Beatles to Jackie O., it makes you think, if these walls could talk,” she muses about the hotel and residence at the corner of Central Park South and Fifth Avenue.Playing to his forte of re-creating the past, Tommy elaborates on his apartment’s decor: “We had a vision to create an old-world atmosphere complementing the old-world Plaza.” And they did just that, with a wink, of courseFollowing a gut renovation, the grandiose, European-influenced apartment has a cozy feel. “We have bought almost all of the furniture together,” says Dee. “We like to go shopping on the weekends. It’s been a real collaboration.”Littered with megawatt pieces like the noir Maison Jansen dining-room table, the antique lacquered desk in the living room, and the crystal sailing-ship chandelier in the baby’s room, the grand interior surprisingly does have a welcoming feel. Andy Warhol’s portraits of Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor hold court in the living room, while a jovial Mickey Mouse hangs in the guest bedroom and Marilyn Monroe graces the second-floor hallway. They have more than 20 pieces of his work in total, as well as a Jean-Michel Basquiat in the entry. But Tommy isn’t done yet. Fittingly, he has had his eye on a Jasper Johns American-flag painting. The original French Renaissance-style turret features an Eloise mural by Hilary Knight. The bistro-inspired kitchen.      Off to work! Mansions in the Middle of Nowhere

Tue, 19 Oct 2010 17:13:07 PDT

Ultra-high-end homes are on the market for tens of millions in Door County, Wis., and other unexpected spots. What are they doing there?Homes that cost $10 million or more are expected to boast certain luxuries, and the gated compound called the Brentwood has all the amenities a trophy home should: a three-tiered screening room, billiards hall equipped with wet bar, master bathroom with a fireside Jacuzzi and 10-spigot shower, guest homes, lushly wooded surroundings, tennis court and boat dock.In Pictures: Middle-Of-Nowhere Mansions What's unusual about the Brentwood is its location: Big Chippewa Lake, Minn. Two hours outside Minneapolis, it is worlds away from moneyed areas like Beverly Hills, Calif. or Vail, Colo., where the vast majority of astronomically expensive homes are clustered.BrentwoodYet millionaires, moguls and well-to-do families have installed estates worth double-digit-millions in places where no nearby home comes remotely close in price. Why would anyone put so much money into a property with a location that makes it exceedingly difficult to resell? The answer is often personal. When the Brentwood's publishing industry owners decided to build a sprawling, homey family retreat, they eschewed more glamorous locales; their Minnesota roots span generations. The wealthy couple hosted children and grandchildren at the property, which is decorated with whimsical brass sculptures of deer and prancing children, until the family outgrew it. Now Realtor Greg Antonsen, of Christie's Great Estates, says it's a perfect buy for a family or anyone looking for a little solitude."You have all the privacy you want--it's its own world," says Antonsen. "When you're on this lake, it's you and you alone."In most parts of the country, even the most expensive homes cost less than $10 million. But some rich families, when deciding where to settle, choose sentimental value over deluxe areas, resulting in homes so opulent they often stand out like sore thumbs.Southways EstateThe Price of HistoryAnother Minnesota home with a shocking price tag, the Southways Estate, was built by the Pillsbury family in 1918 and occupied in the 1990s by Minnesota Vikings co-owner James Jundt and his family. The Jundts have been trying to unload the storied family home for two years at $53 million, and attempted to sell it in a much publicized December 2009 auction. But in spite of its sweeping views, period details and architectural significance, the auction hasn't yet resulted in a sale. Perhaps that's because in uncertain economic times, few real estate investors want to take a chance on a grand home in an out-of-the-way place.Age and backstory lend cachet to a number of mansions off the beaten path. A former plantation is on the market in Charleston, S.C., for $10 million. In Foxburg, Pa., a restored 1828 home, built by the descendants of George M. Fox, who founded the Quaker religion, is being sold for $24 million.Chateau du LacThe Chateau du Lac, a mansion that will appeal to eccentrics, is in an unlikely place: Door County, Wis. At $23 million it's by far the most expensive home in the scenic area, but that's not the only strange thing about it. The home's buyer will also receive all its contents, like a kitchen full of antique silver and cutlery, and a collection of evening purses. Should they be pet lovers, there's space for the family's departed dog in the home's adjacent mausoleum. The home's owner, 90-year-old businessman Frank Spitzer, bought it sight unseen for his wife Erlys, who has since died."It's just an expense at this point," says George Chakmakis, Spitzer's lawyer, in an e-mail. "He has still never been there."MedwayA Resale ChallengeA mansion that's far from millionaire's row can offer seclusion, uninterrupted views and more bang for your buck. But selling ult[...]

Celine Dion's 9,825-square-foot Jupiter Island home about 80 percent done

Tue, 19 Oct 2010 17:13:07 PDT

JUPITER ISLAND — By the time pop star Celine Dion completes her six-continent "Taking Chances" tour in Montreal's freezing February weather, she might be ready for a warmer climate. If so, the 40-year-old diva's estate here could be ready and waiting for her.Dion's Canadian firm, Renlec Management, filed paperwork last May to begin building on a 3.7-acre oceanfront property in the 200 block of South Beach Road, and Jupiter Island Building Official Jeff Newell said the $3.2 million in new construction is now about 80 percent complete.Last week, the property was buzzing as usual with construction trucks and workers. The main structures were erected, but the landscaping was not complete and the buildings were surrounded by dirt.It is difficult to estimate when the home will be in ready for Dion to move in, but the family anticipates it could take at least another year, said Conrad Damon, Dion's Florida attorney.Renlec bought the property in June 2005 for $12.5 million. At the time, the land contained a two-story home, two-story guesthouse and a pool, but all the structures were leveled for Dion's estate.West Palm Beach Architect Roger P. Janssen's plans for the new estate reveal tropical-themed architecture with wide verandas and balconies, cupolas atop copper roofs, French doors and white Bahama shutters. When complete, the estate will feature two guesthouses, an underground garage, two pools, two tennis courts, a pool cabana and a beach cabana containing a small gym.The main residence, a 9,825 square foot two-story structure, has six bedrooms, eight full bathrooms, an elevator and a basement for laundry and staff living quarters.Damon said Dion and her manager-husband Ren'é Ang'élil designed the estate to create an island, "Bahamas-like" atmosphere for relaxing and raising their family. The couple have one child, 7-year-old son Rene-Charles."The goal and concept for this home is that it's going to be a comfortable, family home," Damon said. "It will have a laid back feel to it."The entrance for the estate will be at an adjacent 2-acre lot to the north that Renlec purchased in January for $7 million. The driveway will feed off to a future 2,621-square-foot guesthouse, tennis court and underground garage on that property before curving south to an entry pavilion and parking spaces on the larger lot.Just inside an 8-foot-tall cypress fence sits an additional eight-bedroom guesthouse. .Damon said a "spectacular" swimming pool will one day grace the middle portion of the property and showcase unique, children-friendly features. The main residence, on the far east portion of the property, is shaped as a three-pronged cross centered around an octagonal-shaped middle area.On the first floor, the octagon includes a living room facing the ocean and separates north and south wings containing bedrooms and a sound-proof TV room.On the second floor, an elevator and staircase lead into a playroom and children's rooms on the west side and an octagonal-shaped adjacent master suite on the east side. While the suite includes an outdoor spa, wide balconies and three fireplaces, perhaps its most impressive feature is a 460-square-foot master closet that rivals the sleeping area.In addition to the main home's center, the estate's entry pavilion and beach cabana are octagons. Damon calls the octagonal concept, "a significant component of the design" for Dion, who wanted an open-space feel to her home. But it's also credited as the root of a lawsuit Dion filed against her first architect, Randall Stofft of Delray Beach.Renlec hired Stofft for the project in June 2005, but the contract fell apart because Stofft refused to incorporate the octagonal design and even "mocked it in a vulgar fashion," Damon said. But Stofft's attorney, Cole[...]

10 Rooms That Are Designed Around Televisions

Tue, 19 Oct 2010 17:13:07 PDT

A lot of people predicted in the late 90s that televisions would be completely outdated and replaced by personal computers within a decade. Well, this is the year 2010 and we can still say it hasn’t happened yet. Sure, televisions of today are quite different from what we had back then. During those days, interactive television had not taken off yet and sets were incapable of Xbox entertainment or YouTube streaming (no YouTube back then. ). Even though the lines have really blurred between TVs and PCs today, we can still say TV maintains the image of being a “laid back entertainment device”. Unlike the PC experience, TV viewing is all about laying back and relaxing in a comfortable environment with the user taking no active role in the proceedings. Wait, are we sounding too much like a tech blog? Better not keep you waiting any longer then.[...]

It can act as your study or simply a room where you can relax. If you are an artist, the room may be an ideal place to reflect. It's basically the solitude of the rest of the house that makes it a great success. If you've played with the idea of what to do with your attic a look at the pictures below. You can apply cold theme in the room (the room like a car) or the use of colors to give a feeling rusty used, vintage age. Whatever you choose, the place was a bad smell will not be the same.

Design Inspiration and Design Tips of Home Gym

Tue, 19 Oct 2010 17:13:07 PDT

If you are health conscious, having a gym membership can prove to be a worthy investment. But if you are disciplined and self motivated having a home-gym is a decision you will always be proud of. The burning question is where to start from? Here are some quick tips to consider once you are decided on having your own personal workout place. Home Gym Design Tips 1) Think of a gym and one visualises a big room with full length mirrors and all sorts of training equipments combined with an open space for aerobic/yoga sessions. It might be true in case of commercial gyms but when it is home-gyms spaces do not have to be huge. A small spare room in your house or basement can be a great place to get started. 2) When you purchase equipments, make sure they are safe, compact and versatile. As you will mostly be working out alone you should make sure that you are investing in the right type of equipments. It is also essential to not try and cram the space with too much equipment. Keep it minimal. Keep it simple. 3) While setting up, you might as well get an accessory rack where you can place your small gadgets making them in turn easily reachable. You can also consider getting a small fridge to keep your energy drinks and water bottles. 4) Place a full length mirror on one of the walls. It gives a feeling of roominess plus you can keep a check on all your fitness moves. And it can be a source of motivation as well. 5) And lastly, having a great collection of music to listen to while you work out can make it a more enjoyable experience. Consider plugging in a music system if you can. It is a great catalyst and stress buster.
