Re: Retlaw History: Culver

2012-02-07 15:59:37Z

My name is Roy Foster, and I am married to Ethel longacre who was raised at Retlaw Alberta, and was one of a large family, who farmed s/w of Retlaw. I have some pictures of the old Retlaw General Store and Cafe, as well as the Retlaw Grain Elevators that were taken many years ago. I tryed to send them to Doris Higgens via email, but they were rejected, saying "No longer in Service". Who can I send them to?, please advise an email adress. Thanks

I am another Gourley,Brother of Delbert Vernon that you
have mentioned, son also of Edward Sidney Gourley and Amy Quinton.None of these mentioned ever resided in Taber, But rather in Picture Butte and Raymond. However none of the Gourley family at this time reside in Raymond or Picture Butte
but are scattered as the wind. There are only 3 of the 9 original children of Edward and Amy still surviving and I am the youngest. Gourley

Thank you for checking that. Do you know how many members of the Kambeitz family are buried there?

Re: Looking for a gravestone: Kambeitz

2011-11-20 20:11:26Z

Hi, Sorry I can't be of any help - but a thought.
The Cemetery is still in operation [from messages found doing a Google Search].
There should be a Cemetery Office - or someone who works with the Cemetery. They will know the layout of the Cemetery - what graves are still available for burial - they should also have information re burials on site - and the names of the persons buried there .
Cheers, Stella

Re: Looking for a gravestone: Kambeitz

Sorry it's taken so long to get back to you; the Kambeitz "section" of the Assumption Cemetery in Grassy Lake doesn't have headstones... All the Kambeitzes have white crosses instead; not sure who is who, to be honest.

I can get you some photos in the future, if you'd like. I also have a map I got from the County of 40 Mile which maintains the cemetery that might be helpful.

Re: George Henry Hook

2011-09-04 15:57:32Z

In the Brooks local history book, there is mention of George Hook as “the Canadian Western National Gas man…When the gas got low at night, Mr. Hook would have to get up in the night and go and thaw out a gas line…”
http://www.ourfutureourpast.ca/loc_hist/page.aspx?id=243577

BTW, Brooks is in Newell County, AB.

Re: George Henry Hook

2011-09-04 08:12:57Z

Thank you for that information Peter.

It certainly looks like that is my George Henry Hook. (The birth date fits)

George really had a sad life. Watching his first wife and baby daughter die and then watching his baby son die.

I will be getting in touch with the sites you gave me. Thanks again

George Henry Hook

2011-09-02 16:58:59Z

This is a bit of a shot in the dark, but I hope that the details might ring a bell with someone.

My husband's uncle was George Henry Hook, born in London England in 1886.
His parents were James Hook and Kate Hughes.

In 1914, George and his wife Clara were living at Grassy Lake, near Taber.

On 23 Feb 1914 Clara gave birth to twin girls. The babies were named Clara and Matilda.
Clara was very ill after the birth and on 25 Feb 1914 she died.
On 4 Mar 1914 baby Clara died.

I am trying to discover what happened to George and to baby Matilda.
I would love to know that Matilda grew up to have children of her own, against all the odds.

I am in UK and I cannot find any re-marriage for George or a marriage for Matilda. I cannot even find a death for either of them, so I assume they both remained in Canada.

Are there any Canadian records on-line that I can search?

Thanks for any help you can give.

Re: Retlaw History: Susinski

2011-03-01 02:34:00Z

Hi, I have some information that may or may not be of some use to you. I too am researching a family tree. My father and grandfather lived in Retlaw. My grandfather came over form the Ukraine in ~ 1910 with one sister and one brother (names unknown) and they were married and they had two sons (names Unknown) and the people they married were farmers in the area. (names Unkown). My grandfathers name was Carl Susinski and my fathers name is Greg Susinski and they both worked for the railroad in Retlaw. There is a book out there that I have seen from the Lomond area that has some historical information on the Retlaw area. I would suggest contacting the Lomond town office and perhaps you can get a copy as it contained the names and informaiton on many people from the area. Happy hunting!!

Is there anyone who can take a photo for me of the gravestone of Elizabeth Kambeitz 1829-1911?
She is buried at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery
Grassy Lake, Alberta, Canada.
If my information is correct, then also her husband Henry Kambeitz "1826"-1904 is buried there.

Re: WATTUM

Hi, It appears that the messages are old 2000 & 2001 - perhaps the person posting no longer has the same e mail address - or is not notified when a new message comes through [I have the same problem ]

Perhaps a family connection:

From the Alberta GenWeb Local History Books
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~canab/lookspa3.html
WATTUM, Hjordis ; 166; Wind, Willows and Prairie Wool; Special Area #3
There does not appear to be a volunteer for a lookup - Provincial Archive in Edmonton - & Perhaps Legislative Library in Edmonton may hold copies.

You are probably aware of the Provincial Archive of B.C. Vital Events Index:
Marriage 1859-1933 - birth 1872-1903 Death 1872-1988
Filmed Registrations can be viewed at no cost at the Provincial Archive in Victoria - Some Public & University Libraries in the Province.
Main Branch of the Vancouver Public Library 6th floor - has the microfilms available to view - transcribe .copy.

There are
5 WATTUM Marriages 1926-1933
9 WATTUM Deaths 1930- 1974

1911 Census shows
1911 Census of Canada
Home / 1911 / Alberta / Medicine Hat / 22 Townships 9
6 WATTUM surnames at above - * In all Canada.

Hi, What time frame?
Hi, If Irene Kovacs STEVENS lived in Ontario - have you also posted to the Ontario Message Board/s?

Did she live - marry - have her children in Alberta?
Are the Children still in Alberta - or did they go to Ontario with Irene?

If any of the family members are deceased - Have you searched for Obituaries - may show family members - and locations at that time. Perhaps can be followed up.

Perhaps posting to the Canada GenWeb Message Board. May be helpful -

Have you searched Online White Pages directory 411.ca
for the family ?
Cheers, Stella

Sean

Re: William Thomas Cook, Manitoulin Island to Alberta in 1910

2007-01-06 17:08:10Z

oops sorry- I must has mislead you. I'm not related to any Cooks that I know of! But like you, I wondered if J Ernie Cook was the same as Robert J Ernest Cook, and because he'd moved from Manitoulin to Taber I figure there must be a connection somewhere too. And yes, I gave you all the info I had. You can find it again by searching rootsweb for "earnest cook" I believe.
Good luck,
Bette

Re: William Thomas Cook, Manitoulin Island to Alberta in 1910

2007-01-06 14:35:46Z

Hi,
Thanks for the info. The fact that he (Ernie COOK) says he immigrated from Manitoulin Island to Taber means there definitely is a connection, but I can't immediately connect him. Leafing through the "Taber" book you linked me to through Our Roots, I noticed they often listed him as "J. Ernie Cook". I have a Robert John Earnest Cook, b. July 03, 1890 (The "J", could be for John). His brother was William Earnest Cook. In both cases "Ernie" could have been for "Earnest". I think you said your Ernie was born in 1898? Was that the entire article that you had sent me?
Thanks.

Re: William Thomas Cook, Manitoulin Island to Alberta in 1910

There a note about an "Ernie Cook" although I don't now if he's "yours" or not.
Alberta Newspapers, 1880-1982, pg. 297
Cook, Erna (Ernie), b. Manitoulin Ialand, Ont.
1898, moved to Tabor; 1913 to Grouard, homesteaded in Spirit River and was in lumber business; 1919 moved to Conjuring Creek, Leduc district, on wife's family farm; 1947 to Edmonton on CCF executive (EJP 15 173: Taber Advertiser 995
Sorry but I don't know what these source number means.

You might search for Cooks in this book
