The world has become a hectic place to live with fast food, fast cars and fast computers. Life moves at such a rapid pace that the elements that compose our lifestyles generate an abundance of stress that many do not know how to handle. The transcendental form of meditation is one in which the practitioner calms the mind in order to achieve a higher state of consciousness allowing for a greater flow of thought. Maharishi Mahesh Yogi founded Transcendental Meditation, often referred to as TM, in the late 1950’s.

The Maharishi decided to take his teachings on a world tour attracting many new people, even celebrities to take on this form of meditation. The long list of celebrities who have practiced Transcendental Meditation includes the likes of actress Heather Graham, Singer Mick Jagger, Director David Lynch, the late comedian Andy Kaufman and most notably, The Beatles.

The busy lifestyles of people today have paved the way for the rise in popularity of meditation. It is a pleasant way of quieting the minds of people who are constantly exposed to noise and stress.

The whole objective of meditation is to allow people to concentrate their senses on one particular element. This can be their breathing, their sight or the sounds they hear. According to Dr. Joan Borysenko, a mind and body medical specialist, meditation can refer to any activity that focuses the mind on the present. This can refer to any activity that frees a person from the fears of the past or worries of the future.

There are two basic approaches to meditation. The first is called concentrative meditation. It involves focusing the mind to one particular natural element such as sound or breathing. It can be comparable to a camera lens that has the ability to zoom in on a particular object. A famous example of concentrative meditation is breathing meditation. Here, a person tries to concentrate on his or her breathing until such a time when it becomes slow and calm. This state of breathing reflects a relaxed consciousness, one that is free from any anxieties or worries.

The second approach to meditation is called mindfulness meditation. Unlike concentrative meditation, the aim of mindfulness meditation is for the person to be able to pay attention to every detail of his or her surroundings. The only expense you’ll have is a meditation mat, which isn’t especially necessary-at least from my experience. Meditation has been around for 5,000 years, and was originally a spiritual component of yoga. Through the years non-yogis adopted it, intuitively sensing and connecting the practice with greater peace of mind. Personally, I can’t say enough good things about meditation. Its use has rewarded me with less worry and much more energy. But I’ve never been one for anecdotal evidence. Let’s get to the science…Transcendental MeditationRecently, there’s an incredible amount of science tied into the benefits of meditation. The studies are endless and cover a variety of meditative practices. On Transcendental Meditation techniques alone (mantra repetition) there are over 500 studies. Some are more noteworthy that others. A study in the Japanese Journal of Public Health found that through Transcendental Meditation, industrial workers sleep improved and their smoking decreased. Another study conducted at the MERU Research Institute, in Buckinghamshire, England found that the length of time practicing the Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi program correlated with younger biological age and younger functional age.Mindfulness MeditationMindfulness meditation, which asks us to focus on our breath to facilitate awareness of the present moment, is another widely studied meditation technique. After studying the effects of 8-weeks of mindfulness meditation on participants, a 2003 report in the Journal of Psychosomatic Medicine concluded: “A short program in mindfulness meditation produces demonstrable effects on brain and immune function.” Impressive, but fairly vague. To get a more committed response to the benefits of meditation we have to turn to Taiwan. In 2002 their journal Chang Gung Medicine reported that “training in MM may be a medically superior and cost-effective alternative to pain medication for the control of headaches with no underlying organic causes in highly motivated patients.”Stress Reduction and MeditationWhat causes these positive physical changes? To answer this, other research has looked at the specifics of what happens in the body during meditation. . Researchers at the Maharishi School of Management in Fairfield, Iowa, found that meditation has an enormous impact on stress reduction. When they examined a group who had meditated for four months they saw that they produced less of the stress hormone cortisol. They were therefore better able to adapt to stress in their lives, no matter what their circumstances were.Having balanced cortisol levels is essential to mental and emotional health. Notice I say balanced rather than none. We don’t want to completely eliminate cortisol. If we did we’d be dead. Even low cortisol levels can be dangerous. Not enough cortisol is the identifying trait of Addison’s disease. John F. Kennedy had this condition, which he denied passionately during his presidency. Yet during his term he regulated his levels through hydrocortisone (synthetic cortisol). The reverse of JFK’s condition is called Cushings Syndrome.The five most common and noticeable changes of this condition include; red face and puffy cheeks; excess fat surrounding the collar bones, muscle weakness, and hypertension. A middle aged woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. While on the operating table she had a near death experience. Seeing God, she asked if this was it. God said, "No you have another 43 years, 2 months, and 8 days to live."

Upon recovery the woman decided to stay in the hospital and have a face lift, liposuction, tummy tuck, etc. She even had someone come in and change her hair color, figuring since she had so much more time to live, she might as well make the most of it.

She got out of the hospital after the last operation and while crossing the street was killed by an ambulance speeding to the hospital.

Arriving in front of God, she demanded, "I thought you said I had another 40 Years?"

God replied, "I didn't recognize you..."

You already possess the ability to manifest far more than sufficient quantity in the areas of money, health, and relationships. You have been provided with all the gifts you need to live and experience a life of harmony, joy, inner peace, and unlimited prosperity in whichever area that YOU CHOOSE to experience it in.If that’s TRULY the case why do you continually fall short of realizing these abilities? Manifestation and the Importance of Living in the Present

Do you sometimes observe your mind? In the ancient Vedic scripture Bhagavad-Gita, Krishna says to Arjuna “One must deliver himself with the help of his mind, and not degrade himself. The mind is the friend of the conditioned soul, and his enemy as well. For him who has conquered the mind, the mind is the best of friends; but for one who has failed to do so, his mind will remain the greatest enemy.”

When you start observing your mind first thing you might notice is that you don’t control it. How many times you have read something, sometimes even trying to really concentrate on the subject, but then you caught yourself thinking about something completely different at the same time?

You can observe your mind, because you are not your mind, as you are not your body (This article is not about “You are not your body” subject. I wrote more about it in “Introduction to Manifestation”)

To manifest what you want you need to control your mind. You need to concentrate, meditate and visualize often. You need to focus on the things you want to manifest. If you allow your mind to jump freely from one subject to another, like a monkey from tree to tree, it will take you long time to achieve your goals.

One aspect of this is importance of living in the NOW. You can notice that we often think about the past, and when we think about the past we tend to think about “old good times”. There are not “old good times”. We simply forget about bad times and think about good times mostly, because it allows us to escape from the present reality and live in happy illusion.

The point is that the past, happy or sad is dead. We can’t change it. It also doesn’t have any value for our manifesting purposes. Of course we can hopefully learn from our past mistakes, but that’s it, otherwise dwelling on the past is just a waste of time.

If we don’t think about the past we usually think about the future. Often we are afraid of the future, sometimes we look at the future with hope. But the future is made in the present. We need to start living in the present and concentrate on the present. We need to be happy now. If we are happy now, we build our happy future. Because of that it is very important to gradually control the mind and to live in the now; try to be happy now.

We can easily change our mind’s states. We can listen to some good music which we like, we can think about someone we love or we can look at something beautiful. Whatever helps you to feel happy, and the most important we can visualize the things we want in the future as already achieved.

A good way to get in the good mood is to do some simple yogic breathing exercises, which very quickly help to achieve peace and control of the mind.

Another good way is to practice gratitude for the things you have and the things you would like to have. You cannot feel unhappy when you feel grateful.

There are many different methods, but to start manifesting the things you want easily and quickly it’s good to find a good mentor or course, and follow the instructions. Reading about manifestation, the law of attraction and self improvement is always good, but the best is to take action and apply what you have learned.

Who am I that I could make a change? How can I make a difference?

Throughout history, it has not been those who have asked the questions that have made their mark on history, but those who took the next step. Those who have taken action.

Look around you. All intelligent human life can see what is going on around them. We all know what the questions are with regards to what needs to be done.

And for the most part, we all know the answers, as well. We know the answers because we are intelligent human life. The problem is, the answers usually aren’t easy choices. Easy choices or easy solutions would have already been done. But the answers we know require thought, preparation, effort, and sometimes, sacrifice.

That is why problems and challenges still exist. Too few of us “intelligent human beings” are willing to step forward, take a risk, accept the criticism, and make a difference.

Risk and criticism follow anyone who is willing to step forward and choose to make a difference. We make mistakes. None of us are perfect. But the individual who is willing to try, who is willing to fight the status quo, who is willing to reach and stretch and work for a better world is the one whom the masses will follow.

Look at all the truly great people of the earth. They didn’t just wake up one morning and say, “Today, I’m going to become a hero or heroine.” They just simply decided that if a particular change was going to happen, they were going to have to to be the one to do it!

And then they acted on their decision, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The secret is not in knowing something needs to be done, but in deciding to be the one to do it. It’s a very thin line of decision that separates the average from the extraordinary.

You are meant to be great. You are meant to be one of the extraordinary few!

On a deep emotional level we are creatures of comfort and we automatically seek out that which feels good in the moment. We long for comfort and this usually comes from that which we know; that which is familiar to us. Once we can comfortably deal with and "know" all the "unknowns" we can "relax" – because your nervous system and your mind is designed to find and attach a meaning(s) to everything and therefore something new is always a confrontation between that which is and that which will be in your mind.The unknown is always something that your mind and your nervous system has to "unravel" afresh and this very process feels uncomfortable on many levels. When something becomes comfortable you get used to it as you remove all the "unknowns" and your automatic behaviour can take over again. Our nervous system works primarily by conditioning and by repetition we notice and assume patterns that are consistent. This system is really there to serve us in helping us being more efficient and to be able to do more, more efficiently. Your mind is designed to always look for the best way. Through repetition we learn certain orders and sequences in which things happen and we learn to recognize and respond according to these sequences. Every emotion you experience, for instance, is nothing but the result of a sequence of events and reactions triggered by your unconscious awareness that generates and creates the actual feeling which is nothing but a sensation in your nervous system.To change anything you must first of all become aware of these patterns. You must become aware of what goes on under the surface of your conscious awareness. This is not difficult and everybody can do this. You need not understand everything about the human nervous system to use it. The challenge is to go from one pattern, one that does not serve you, to one which does. Without growth you simply won't be happy. You can do something that feels comfortable and "good" in the moment by staying with what you know, but true fulfilment comes from pushing beyond your comfort zone and creating a sense of pride in yourself. The subconscious is an extremely powerful tool which is very poorly understood by virtually all scientists. Today, yes this very day, a dear family friend, only 48, did not wake up. Yesterday he was fine. Today the funeral is being planned.

We do not know how long we have. Not you. Not me. Not anyone. The grim reaper shows up when he will.

Have you a vision of your potential legacy? Is there a plan in position, your plan, to leave this world a better place. Surely you know that’s why the creator of us all gave us breath and life.

Each day we speak or train, we have the opportunity to allow some part of our vision to be actualized.

I love to share the Johnny Appleseed story from the platform. Picture this frail old man, sack over his back, walking by the side of the road aided by his cane. He pauses every 30 feet, or so, and pokes his cane into the earth.

He reaches into his sack. He takes out one apple core and gently pushes it into the hole made by his cane. He tamps it down with his shoe. Then he walks on. 10 or 12 paces ahead he repeats the performance, a little smile on his lips.

A small boy watches, pulls on the old man’s sleeve and says, “I know what you’re doing. And you won’t be here to see those trees get big, produce apples and give shade.”

The old man wipes his brow with his big red neckerchief. “In that case,” he replies, “I think I’ll plant a few extras today.” His vision is obvious.

What is your vision. What is your vision of the possible you, of the reality that is to be because you stand and speak?

We don’t have to change the macrocosm, the whole world. What matters is that we add value, all we can add, for those in the microcosm, our personal worlds, yours and mine: All the people we know, all the places we go, all the circumstances and conditions of our lives. And that we do it while we can . . .

Are we walking our talks? Are we justifying the space we take up and the resources we consume on this earth? Are we being a model of the possible human? Have we a vision, our personal vision, of our respective legacies? This is what we must face. This is what we must consider in the still watches of the night.

After all, there are only so many tomorrows. . .

Will You Keep On Slaying Dragons Or Be A Hero?

“Well, Johnny,” said his Mom, as she closed the book, “that’s it for dragons tonight.”

As she tucked him under the covers, she noticed that he was frowning.

“Do you have something on your mind, son?”

“I think St. George had it easy.”

“No, he didn’t he killed the dragon. It wasn’t easy at all.”

“Anyone can kill a dragon, Mom. It’s not hard. Just stick him with your lance.”

She kissed him on his brow and started to walk out of the room.

“You know what’s hard, Mom?” asked Johnny.

Sighing, Agnes returned and sat on the side of the bed.

“You know, Mom…anyone can kill a dragon. What is real hard is waking up every morning and trying to love people all over again. That takes a real hero.”

There comes a time in every life when people face a day of reckoning. For some it comes early. For others late. Possibly, for a few it never comes.

On that day, you ask: “Did I help someone, did I do well by someone, did I make a difference? Did I love myself, did I love other people, did I love the world?”

It’s easy enough to just drift through life and whittle it away, one uncaring day after another, preoccupied with just trying to survive…but that’s not what this entire earth journey is about at all.

Did you give back to others? Did you love enough? Did you laugh with anyone? Did you understand another’s pain? Did you make a small effort to leave things better than you found them?

Perhaps you don’t have a prescient little soul like Johnny in your life to remind you of the deeper things—but you can still be a hero any day. There’s much more to life than just slaying dragons.

Who did you help today? Who did you hurt today? Who did you thank today? Who did you forgive today?

And how will you do it better tomorrow?

What will you be…today, and tomorrow?

What will you do with the rest of your life?

Will you keep on slaying dragons or be a hero?

Count Your Chickens Before They've Hatched

You were probably told to not get your hopes up and to not expect too much - just in case you might be disappointed. For most of us this, or some variation of it, was told to us over and over again by well meaning, but ill informed people. From an early age the idea of staying in an emotional "safe zone" was instilled in most of us until it eventually became belief systems that now control our behaviours.We live in a culture were the predominant psychology is based in fear. The fear of loss drives and motivates most people's decisions and behaviours. From this mindset the culture invented mechanisms to protect itself and saying like "don't count your chickens before they've hatched" is but only and illustration of how the culture prepares and "grooms" us from an early age to settle for the lowest denominator. "Go for the lowest and easiest to make sure that you at least get something." "Don't expect too much, just in case you don't get anything at all." From this mindset we loose all our power; the power that is born in the belief that we are indeed worthy of all the success and all the abundance that we can possibly dream of.Expectation is indeed one of the most powerful resources that you possess. An intense anticipation can transform possibility into reality. One of the biggest reasons why most people never get to live their dreams is because they lack the motivation to follow their dreams. The real purpose of a goal is to act like a directional mechanism that guides your life in a specific direction. A strong and exciting goal has the power to motivate and inspire you. When you fuel this goal with expectation you set in motion an unstoppable force that will give you that internal drive that will enable you to create virtually anything you desire. When you count your chickens before they've hatched you create a sense of excitement and enthusiasm that has immense power to motivate you. Success and achievement are rarely the result of your ability but rather the product of your motivation; of your ability to consistently take action on your dreams and goals.Expectation is not the same as hope. I am sure it happens to you too that you smell some odour like hot tarmac or smoke from a fish mongers or something else, for you to be transported into a moment from a distant past. It's all there, in your mind.These memories are in a sense snapshots from the past, they are static. The mind goes much further still. Think about all the things you ever thought about? The games you invented as a kid where you may have been nursing a doll or fighting knights on imaginary horses - with wings! The imaginary relationships you had when you were older, the things you learned at school. The day dreams, the real dreams, all of these are in your mind somewhere.There is more still. Once you've got your thinking around the huge store of information, experiences and emotions that are in your mind, you are only scratching the surface when you realise that the mind is also an access point to consciousness and even universal consciousness. The mind makes the world and the internet look like the nursery room of your first hours on this earth.Can you recall what you thought about when you where 6 years old, bored to distraction with the sums you were asked to work out by a patient adult? Probably not, these sort of memories are on the outer reaches of the universe of the mind. You can get there though, if that’s where you want to go.In fact, you can go anywhere in the realm of your mind, no matter how remote or well hidden, if you are prepared to undertake the journey, you can reach these nuggets of the mind.Travelling through memory lane can be entertaining or an emotional experience. For some people it is necessary to revisit some of those memory locations in order to experience the memory once again and change their perspective of a potentially distorted memory.The realm of the mind has so many remote and interesting lands that it is almost hard to know where to turn to when we set off on that journey with our imaginary backpack. Should we construct our own lands and explore them to be surprised by what we find? Or should we take the narrow path down our own consciousness and stand at the boundary of our own mind peering into the land of the super conscious or the subconscious?Personally I like visiting many different places when I travel but I know there are people that prefer to get a profound understanding of a single location to which they are quite attached.At times when I was exploring the dimension of musical composition, I paved a path to an imaginary artist who taught me so much about composition that it was almost scary. Who Am I - A Recursive Search For Inner Truth

A couple of years ago when I was trying to find an answer one of life's difficult questions, I came across a method of recursive questioning. This lit a light bulb in my head since I knew about the magic of recursion but it had never occurred to me to use it in the context of finding answer in my mind.What is recursion? It's a logical method that asks a question repeatedly until the answer breaks the repetitive cycle. Each time the question is asked, the context evolves and shifts and the question takes on a different meaning. It is quite a powerful method, partly because it is so simple.Recently I bumped into a conversation where a new colleague challenges one of his peers with question: tell me who you are but don't give me your name, job title, address, age, marital status etc. My poor colleague thought for a while before deciding that this was too hard.Who am I if I can't describe myself by the things that describe me? Who am I? I am not my name since I could change that and still be me. I am not my religion, profession and dress style for the same reasons. I am not my lifestyle, social status or age since they can all change whilst I remain me.Am I my physical body? Let's do a gruesome mind experiment to test this premise. What if I surgically removed a hand, will I still be me? Of course, I would be very unhappy but fundamentally I would still be me. I could loose other limbs and even some or all of my senses and I would still be me. So, I am not my body.That's amazing: I am not that what describes me and nor am I my body.Am I my emotions? I can imagine a lifestyle that would make very happy and if anything, I would be more me than ever. Similarly it is easy to think of a lifestyle that would destroy my happiness. No doubt I would become a miserable introvert but unhappy as I would be, I would be me.Am I my intelligence? How could I be? Intelligence is like height. We're born with more or less of it but apart from being gifted, it doesn't say much about us.At least we can agree on one thing: I am alive, right? Who am I? I am alive. That sounds right. I remember my granddad very well. He died years ago but he was a great man. For me he still is a great man. He had his quirks but I liked him. Come to think of it, dead or alive, he is the same for me. I guess I will be me even when I'm gone. In fact I will always be me wherever I am.Let me reiterate: I am not my identity, i.e. the things that describe me. I am not my body, emotions or intelligence. Basically, I am nothing. But I am also timeless or eternal and I am anywhere or everywhere. So, I am also all.I am nothing and I am all. Who am I?I am.That simple answer is really profound. If we could really believe that, we'd view life very differently, completely detached for the simple reason that we are, anyway. The statement "I am" is without bounds and qualifying it any further would do us no justice, it would only limit us unnecessarily. By all means, we give our name and tell our friends what our likes and dislikes are but deep inside we must remember that we are much more than that. We are.From this apparently simple premise, we can reconstruct a world that is comforting and rich. For example, if "I am" and "You are" then we can only conclude that "We are one". That should profoundly change the way we see each other. We may as well cooperate and care for each other. The converse conclusion might be that if we compete and dislike each other, not only do we show how little we understand ourselves; it also does us a great services[...]



How To Develop Focus

Success in life comes from the ability to focus on what you want to create. But that’s easier said than done. Although focus is a simple concept to understand, it is a difficult discipline to master.Our minds are active and filled with a tremendous amount of information. Information that is constantly clamoring for attention. This constant clamoring results in our thoughts jumping from one subject to another at random.It’s also natural for us to want to be involved in a variety of activities. To want to go here. The same holds true if you have a goal but no plan to achieve it.5. Take immediate and consistent action everyday. Training your mind to focus isn’t enough. You must take action. Constant action. The Colour of Success

Success is a word used too often in today's world that its true values have lost its impact on many people's lives. Our parents want us to be successful individuals just as our friends and well wishers pray that we succeed in achieving our goals and aspirations. It is a term you would find every institution stresses upon because sometimes being successful is what life is all about.

But the question is, what does success really mean? Is it only about achieving Big and getting famous? Is it about getting into the showbiz and having fans following you all over? Or is it about breaking world records and the like? Well, you may call these success. Indeed they are, if getting there brings overwhelming joy and that incredible feeling which only true success brings.

Yet, success is not about wealth and fame, it isn't about being celebrities. It isn't about getting degrees after degrees and still feeling like a failure. It isn't about having everything within your reach and still hungering for more.

Success is enoying the fruits of one's hard labour. It is the realisation that hard work pays you back in double measures. For a farmer, success is reaping rich crops. It is a celebration of the good harvest that his whole year's labour has brought. It is overcoming obstacles, hurdles and challenges by defying all odds with sustained and dedicated effort.

There is only one kind of success that determines every individual's life. You may be a student, a housewife, a doctor, an engineer, a journalist, a musician, a preacher, a businessman and the like but success justifies and crowns you according to the amount of dedication and effort you put into anything that you work upon.

It may not bring you great wealth and fame but reaching the pinnacle of success is about being rewarded with the fruits of your hard labour.

Great figures like Gandhiji, Shakespeare, Edison and Leonardo Da Vinci, have attained success and remain respectable to date. It is because they pursued what they believed in and went forward to achieve greatness, giving in all that is required of them.

Life is a constant struggle but despite odds if you choose success to be your sole aim, you will always be a winner. Go and get the crown before its too late.

How Breathing Differently Can Make You Happier

"When you breathe, you inspire. When you do not breathe, you expire." – Quote from an 11-year-old’s science examJohn Grinder, co-creator of NLP talks about the link between respiration, physiology, internal state and high performance. He calls this ‘the chain of excellence’. I recently read a book by Osho, the wonderfully non-PC mystic and guru. In the book, Osho instructed the reader to pay attention to their breathing rate when they were sad, and notice the timing of the in-breath and out-breath. He explained that next time they were happy, they could re-induce the sad state by merely repeating the breathing pattern. Fortunately, he added, it works the other way round too!Follow some or all of these exercises;Firstly; When you are experiencing a powerful, positive state, allow yourself to become aware of your breathing rate. Pay particular attention to the timing and rhythm of your in-breath and out-breath.Secondly; Next time you are in a neutral or negative state, start breathing at the rate and rhythm from exercise one, and within a minute or so, the positive state should begin to return.Many gurus advise people to do breathing exercises regularly. I know Tony Robbins does in his marvellous book “Unlimited Power” he advises that you start each day with a breathing exercise of inhaling slowly and deeply, then holding it for twice as long as the inhalation and exhaling in twice the pace. It really is invigorating and a great way to get motivated at the start of the day, especially if you are looking to do some things with your day that require motivation.Breathing is powerful, our life force and is a major factor influencing our state of mind (if you uncertain about this, hold your breath for two minutes & re-read this sentence) This being the case, please use your common sense when doing any of these exercises (if you have a respiratory condition, please check with your health advisor first.) I do not want any asthmatics complaining that they did themselves harm following these exercises!!So, thirdly; Start breathing comfortably but deeply, in through your nose & out through your mouth. Imagine that you are breathing from that area of your abdomen just beneath your belly button. Make the in-breath last to a count of 5 and the out-breath to a count of 6. Continue for at least 2 minutes, and notice what happens.This 5:6 ratio seems to be a simple yet powerful way you can induce a relaxed state at will. The art of Yogic breathing is called Pranayama. Pranayama offers many different approaches for cleansing the mind & body through breathing exercises. Here’s one of them (with thanks to RA Wilson):Fourthly (this may seem a bit odd to do, I’d recommend not doing this in front of friends or at work!) ; Lie on your back & pant like a dog, breathing rapidly in & out through your mouth 20 times. Then, breathe slowly, deeply and gently in and out 20 times through your nose. Once again, do the mouth-panting 20 times, then resume gentle nose-breathing. Notice what happens.This technique is referred to as the breath of fire, and typically results in a state of… well, you find out!These techniques can be very powerfully utilised when wanting to get in control of your state if you are going through a period of change such as reducing your weight, stopping smoking or developing more confidence.Please remember that most people don’t breathe nearly enough. The Power of Sound for Your Brain

When I was at college, I used to play in a band and I loved it. Mainly because of my love of music. We had some really big gigs and used to write our own songs as well as covering some obscure music from those times. It is amazing that the music I used to listen to at that stage of my life can still make me feel a very particular way.It's like when I run listening to my ipod, it makes such a difference. I can run faster and longer when I have certain tunes on.What's more, I love listening to loud uplifting music when I get out of the shower first thing in the morning, because it makes me feel really alive, upbeat and charged up for my day ahead. My girlfriend is the same, even though our music tastes differ, she likes to sing loudly in the shower and while getting ready for work in the mornings. When I asked her about it once and she described how the music made her feel, she started to grin with delight, and I was intrigued by just how powerful sound can be and how we can all use it for our own benefit.Not sure if many of you will remember this, but here in the UK some years back, Prince Charles was quoted saying "I just come and talk to the plants, really-very important to talk to them, they respond I find" in The Daily Mail. All kinds of research has been done as to how sound affects the world around us.I recently read some research by William Congreve about the effects of music on our own development. I seriously doubt that William Congreve would have said "music hath charms to soothe the savage breast" if he had heard my band practising in my parents front room when I was at college, but he did think music offered people some special things.The point that Congreve so memorably made more than 300 years ago, however, still rings true. Music elicits unconscious reactions. Brahms reportedly puts cranky babies to sleep. Mozart supposedly helps children achieve higher results in exams. Pleasant melodies of all sorts are said to lift depression, relieve anxiety and reduce pain associated with cancer.Even many prominent psychiatrists acknowledge that sounds can indeed provoke the nervous system. The most dramatic examples are two types of epileptic seizures. High-frequency sound waves can trigger "audiogenic seizures." The emotional reactions to music can cause "musicogenic seizures."There is a fascinating piece of research that shows how sound affects cells of water and if you think that the majority of us all is water, then you can begin to think that the sounds we continue to deliver inside our minds can be of some serious importance here.What I want you to think about are the sounds you allow to be played inside your own mind. In my self-hypnosis master class and book, I mention a lot about internal dialogue. I want to go even further than that today though and go beyond the meaning and content of dialogue and just listen to the sounds that we notice in our minds; the tone, rhythm and pitch and how each affects you.First of all, have a go at doing this:Firstly, have a nice sigh. Sigh, naturally and out loud, three times in a row. A sigh sends a signal to your brain that all is ok with you and that you are safe and well.
