“an obstacle course meets dodgeball”: Mark Burnett’s second CBS summer competition series

Wed, 21 Feb 2018 01:00:16 +0000

Less than two weeks ago, CBS picked up a new Mark Burnett-produced summer competition series that sounds a lot like America's Got Talent, and now CBS has ordered a second series that sounds a lot like one of the games on another NBC show, Ellen's Game of Games. The show is called TKO, and Mark Burnett describes it as "an obstacle course meets dodgeball" that "will create amazing viral moments." 10 episodes will air this summer. CBS'... keep reading this story »

Introducing reality blurred’s new comment and community system

Tue, 20 Feb 2018 14:59:51 +0000

While some publications have abandoned comments or kicked conversations over to social media, I've always been thrilled with the conversations we've had here—and that goes back to even before I had comments! Whether we're celebrating a show we all love or challenging each other to think differently about something, it's wonderful to talk and connect. Thus, it pained me to move to Facebook-only comments last year. But that's changing starting right now. As you'll see... keep reading this story »

Shark Tank’s Daymond John turned his philosophy into a book

Tue, 20 Feb 2018 13:50:00 +0000

If you follow Shark Tank star and FUBU founder Daymond John on Twitter, you'll be familiar with his early-morning posts that always have the same three words: "Rise and Grind." I always find those posts both inspiring and a little insufferable—especially because at 6:45 a.m., I often don't feel like doing half of that. Of course, I know he's right; it's a reminder that success takes work, and lots of it. On Jan. 23, Daymond's philosophy... keep reading this story »Rise and Grind author and Shark Tank star Daymond John (Photo by Patrick Harbron/ABC)

Happy 50th anniversary, Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 18:21:24 +0000

Feb. 19, 1968 was the first U.S. broadcast of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, the show that was there for generations of kids. Mister Rogers helped us understand everything from how crayons were made to why we are okay just the way we are. Fred Rogers' series, on which he talked directly to children through the camera, actually originated five years before 1968, as a show that first aired on CBC. Today, it's been off the air... keep reading this story »Fred Rogers on his show Mister Rogers Neighborhood, which debuted 50 years ago today. (Photo by PBS)

Fear Factor returns; Amazing Race, Bachelor conclude; and more reality TV this week

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 13:45:53 +0000

The Amazing Race (CBS, Wednesday at 9) and The Bachelor Winter Games (ABC, Tuesday and Thursday at 8) both end their seasons this week, though half of The Bachelor Winter Games airs this week, since it's just a special four-episode event. The Bachelor will end with a three-hour finale that includes a one-hour "World Tells All" reunion. Returning this week is Fear Factor (MTV, Feb. 25, Sundays at 7), which is dropping its focus on millennials and instead becoming... keep reading this story »Ludacris introducing a stunt on MTV's first season of Fear Factor. Why Shark Tank changed its sharks’ seats and set

Mon, 19 Feb 2018 01:30:00 +0000

The ninth season of Shark Tank started airing in October, and is already approaching its final episodes, ending its its season early thanks to American Idol arriving on ABC's Sunday nights in March. Besides its modified schedule and the addition of five new guest sharks, the major change for Shark Tank season was both visual and functional: a new set and new seating arrangements for the six permanent sharks. I like both changes a lot: the show feels refreshed in... keep reading this story »Mark Cuban wraps something around Kevin O'Leary's face during episode 21 of Shark Tank season 9. So You Think You Can Dance will be back for season 15—but without all-stars?

Fri, 16 Feb 2018 19:42:26 +0000

Fox has renewed So You Think You Can Dance for a 15th season, once again escaping cancellation after being on the bubble. While the show will bring back the same judging panel as last season (Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy, and Vanessa Hudgens) and host Cat Deeley, the all-stars don't appear to be returning, at least not as a central part of the competition. Last year's renewal announcement mentioned that the top 10 would "be paired up with... keep reading this story »So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley, left, with season 14 winner Lex Ishimoto and runner-up Koine Iwasaki (Photo by Adam Rose/FOX)

RuPaul's Drag Race season 10 will debut March 22, and the entire season will have 90-minute "supersized" episodes, along with half-hour episodes of Untucked. That means two hours of Drag Race will air on VH1 every Thursday night. Season 10 will air right after RuPaul's Drag Race All Stars season three concludes. The return of Untucked—which shows what the queens are talking about backstage while the judges deliberate—was first announced last August. Untucked started as a web series called... keep reading this story »RuPaul, in an image for RuPaul's Drag Race season 10. Love After Lockup’s surprising origin and success

Fri, 16 Feb 2018 15:40:09 +0000

Love after Lockup has gotten more time: The WE tv reality series, which follows people who've fallen in love with inmates, was renewed for a second season. Both its ratings and its origin story are an aberration for reality TV shows. That's especially true in the current environment, where most shows lose viewers after their premieres. Love After Lockup did the opposite. While its ratings are not huge—last Friday night, just 476,000 viewers watched live, giving the show... keep reading this story »Garrett Tanner and Johnna DiGrigoli on Love After Lockup.
