Novant Health and Michael Jordan have announced a $7 million gift to open two Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinics in Charlotte.

These comprehensive medical clinics will serve some of the most at-risk and underserved communities in Charlotte and are expected to open in late 2020.

The Novant Health Michael Jordan Family Clinics will provide vital access to primary and preventive care to individuals in the community who have little or no health care. By providing an avenue to affordable, high-quality care – including behavioral health, physical therapy, social work, oral health and family planning – children and families will have a stable, integrative medical home to address their health care needs right in their neighborhoods.

Michael Jordan Supports Children's Literacy Initiative’s Work In Chicago Public Schools

Basketball legend Michael Jordan selected national nonprofit Children’s Literacy Initiative (CLI) for a one-time gift to support CLI’s work in Chicago Public Schools to get more city children reading proficiently by 3rd grade.

Jordan picked CLI as one of 23 Chicago-area, children-related charities to which he is making a one-time gift from his net proceeds from a recent settlement concerning the use of his identity. CLI provides teachers and principals with training and coaching in the most effective practices for early literacy instruction for prekindergarten through third (pre-k to 3rd) grade. CLI has worked in Chicago schools since 2006.

“I care deeply about the city of Chicago and have such incredible memories from my years there,” Jordan said in a statement. “Chicago has given me so much and I want to give back to its kids — the city’s future.”

Jackie Robinson Foundation to Honor Tyler Perry, Gerald Hassell and Don Thompson

The Jackie Robinson Foundation (JRF), which turns 42 this year, has announced that it will honor filmmaker and philanthropist Tyler Perry, Chairman and CEO of BNY Mellon, Gerald L. Hassell, and retiring President and CEO of McDonald’s Corporation, Don Thompson, on March 9, 2015 at 6:30pm at its Awards Dinner, the Foundation’s annual black-tie fundraiser held at the Waldorf Astoria.

Each honoree will be recognized for embodying the humanitarian ideals of Jackie Robinson through devoting their lives to the promotion of social justice, excellence and human dignity. The gala raises funds for the Jackie Robinson Foundation’s unique scholarship program that provides financial grants in addition to mentoring and leadership training for minority college students, and for the Jackie Robinson Museum project. The evening will also feature a performance by GRAMMY Award-nominee Kem, dinner and dancing.

Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational Raises Over $500,000 For Charity

Former St. Louis Cardinals baseball superstars and World Series champion teammates Ozzie Smith and Vince Coleman joined forces to once again win a title – this time on the golf course – at the 12th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI) hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino.

The tournament was held at Shadow Creek for the third consecutive year and was highlighted by the winning duo’s score of 11-under par, 133. More than $500,000 was raised for charity as a result of the 2013 event.

Smith and Coleman, who each took home $20,000 for their designated charities, followed up their first-round score of six-under par 66 with a five-under par 67 on day two. They were able to overcome a late surge by the second-place team of Ahmad Rashad and the “Great One” Wayne Gretzky to win by four strokes. The two teams were tied heading into the 17th hole but Smith/Coleman birdied the final two holes while Rashad/Gretzky bogeyed their final two holes.

On April 29, more than 30 years to the day after a young boy named Chris was granted his wish to be a police officer for a day, Make-A-Wish Foundation supporters around the world will celebrate World Wish Day in honor of the wish that sparked a global wish-granting movement.

Make-A-Wish will mark World Wish Day with celebrations throughout the United States and 47 other countries in which it operates by celebrating wishes being granted on that day. Every 23 minutes, Make-A-Wish grants the wish of a child with a life-threatening medical condition somewhere in the world.

Many celebrities and professional athletes are granting wishes in honor of World Wish Day throughout April. On April 29, Thomson Reuter’s electronic billboard in Times Square will feature a special World Wish Day video, which includes celebrities such as John Cena, Miley Cyrus, Justin Bieber, Buddy Valastro, Jon Stewart, Nigel Barker and Tiffani Thiessen. Soccer superstar Brandi Chastain and former MLB all-star pitcher John Smoltz – teammates and leaders after day one of the 11th annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational (MJCI) hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino – shot even par-72 to earn a five-stroke victory at Shadow Creek Golf Course.

Chastain and Smoltz each took home $20,000 for their designated charities.

The winning duo, who shot a two-day total of six-under par, 138, overcame a difficult performance on the front nine to secure the title. Leading the tournament after day one by two strokes over eventual second-place finishers Roger Clemens and Ahmad Rashad (-1, 143), Chastain/Smoltz fell behind by one after eight holes.

Working in concert with their respective foursome of amateur golfers, Griffey, Jr. shot a 19-under par 53 in the first round of the celeb-am Thursday, while Wright’s team shot a sensational 22-under par 50 during Friday’s second round. Griffey, Jr.‘s team tied host Michael Jordan’s foursome but earned the win via tiebreaker.

Hosted by ARIA Resort & Casino, the 11th Annual Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational golf tournament (MJCI) returns to Las Vegas’ Shadow Creek March 29 – April 1 with new participants including current NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers and comedic genius Joel McHale of NBC’s ‘Community’ and E! Entertainment Television’s ‘The Soup.’

Rodgers and McHale join many returning standouts from 2011 including Ken Griffey, Jr., Wayne Gretzky, Roger Clemens, Brian Baumgartner, Brett Hull, Maury Povich and Chris Chelios, who made a splash last year when he sank a 45-foot putt followed by a cannonball jump into the adjacent lake on the 18th hole green.

Alicia's House Food Pantry closed out their week of celebrity charity events with donations totaling over fifty thousand dollars to help feed the needy.

The week of fundraising started out with Actor/Director/Humanitarian Scott L. Schwartz returning to WGN for an interview, making a first time appearance on NBC’s “The Talk” and visiting the South Chicago Heights Fire Department in Steger, IL.
