Just realized I made a massive blunder: Every morning while doing my translation I listen to a "white noise" app on my iPhone, which is actually not white noise but the sound of waves gently lapping at the shore to drown out the coos of "kawaii", "kakkouii" and "imiwakaran" around me so I don't, one day, take a temporary break from what I'm doing to go into a ninja frenzy and lay waste to a cafe of people, before going quietly and calmly back to work.

It has been working well until now, but I just realized that, stupidly, I've now subconsciously conditioned myself to associate the sounds of a beach with work and deadlines, which means I'll probably get an involuntary twinge of stress whenever I go on vacation.

Pavlovian fail.

There's a mouth breather in my local combini who always tries to scan my Starbucks coffee. I like to leave it on the counter to see the long mental journey he always goes on as he fights his deep urge to scan shit.

Went to one my favorite bars last night. Big 1.G.K poster on the wall and a nice welcome from the staff. Bizarre when I think back to my first visit there six years ago with Mouse.

February Photo a Day Challenge: Day Seven - button #febphotoaday Today, after 10 years of long service, having suffered torment, abuse, mistreatment and multiple relocations my trusty Powerbook finally tapped out and was taken to that giant refurbishment plant in the sky.

He was a stalwart companion and outlasted many of his peers, including several iMacs, MacBooks and MacBook Pros. He was by far the most long-lived laptop I have ever owned. I will always fondly remember him as my favourite Apple computer and I will mourn his loss. Gentlemen, be upstanding for a hero was lost today. R.I.P matey. You will be missed.

Yesterday I spoke to a girl who'd been doing 'yoru no shigoto' ('evening work' - euphemism for hostess bars of varying degrees of lewdity) for six years, since she was 17 years old. She owns a small dog and projects her feelings onto him. When he's been bad, she tells me he looks guilty. When she's excited, she tells him he looks excited. He responds with a lolling tongue and vigorous tail. She can instill in him a wide range of states. She doesn't seem to be aware that they are all coming from her. She says she'd been groped and leered at by married men since her childhood, so she could no longer trust men. She said she had never been able to abandon herself to love because she knows what men are like. She is one of the many Japanese girls I've met who have been repelled by men and turn to foreign guys, unconsciously, because they are not tainted by the same mental associations. When I meet girls like her I always wonder if they know that humans are humans, wherever you go. I wonder if they know that finding the right person has more to do with your behaviour, your choices, your boundaries and a willingness to be alone rather than with the wrong person. It's a hard thing to do because you have no-one to blame but yourself. I hope she knows she can't trust to luck that she finds a guy that doesn't fall into the patterns she has repeated until now. I wonder if she's aware that those patterns are probably reinforced by her as much as anyone else. When the only world you know is one of cheating and illicit liaisons, it's hard to create a reality for yourself in which those things aren't commonplace. People tend to make their own realities and repeat patterns they know. People tend to treat you in the way you invite them to. I enjoyed falling deeply, stupidly, innocently in love when I was young enough to do so. I, like her, am unlikely to do it know. I'm not even sure I'd want to. But I'm glad I had the chance to once or twice. She says she felt like she's missed out on something her friends had all been through. Her friends tell her she grew up too fast. One of my favourite things about Japanese festivals like Setsubun is the untrammeled joy on the faces of the monks. I’ve met low level monks who took the job because the university milk round had finished and they found themselves without a job. They don’t believe in the imaginary sky monsters that are depicted in their temple, but they have a stable salary and they’re grateful for that. These guys think nothing of jumping in their cars and driving to the shops to pick up some beer.

However, the cream of the monk crop, who rise to the monk top, they seem to live a very different, altogether more ascetic lifestyle. There’s a beautiful childlike joy on their faces when they throw small packets of roasted soybeans out to the crowd on Setsubun Festival day. It looks like they’re having the most fun they’ve had in a long time. One suspects it’s the highlight of their social calendars and I think that’s lovely.
