New Zealand (NZL), Rugby World Cup - from hakas to hwyl

Swot up on your Rugby World Cup trivia as Ian Gilbert continues his series with the lowdown on pre-match rituals. What’s the history of the All Blacks’ haka? There are few more electrifying sights (and sounds) in sport than the haka. Just before kick-off, as New Zealand deliver their challenge to the opposition, the stadium crackles with excitement. Strictly, a haka is the generic name for a Maori dance, of which the All Blacks’ pre-match display is just one (two, if you consider they sometimes use the All Blacks-specific Kapa o Pango - first performed in 2005 - as well as the more traditional Ka Mate, Ka Mate). The call to arms is taken from a traditional dance used to prepare warriors for battle. First performed on the New Zealand Native Team’s 1888/89 tour of Britain, it was generally used only while on tour, but at the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987 it became a fixture before every Test. Which haka to use, and who leads it, is decided by the team before each Test. One of the most passionate exponents was Wayne 'Buck' Shelford who, when he assumed the captaincy just after the RWC 1987, took his team-mates to a Maori school to see the students perform a traditional haka. Doesn’t it give the All Blacks an unfair advantage? New Zealanders would argue it’s every bit as much their heritage as the national anthem (God Defend New Zealand, which is also performed). Samoa, Tonga and Fiji also have pre-match dances – the manu siva tau, kailao and the cibi respectively. Opinions differ as to how opponents should best counteract the psychological stirrings of the haka, ranging from indifference (Australia's David Campese would continue with his warm-up) to upfront hostility (during New Zealand's 1989 tour match against Ireland, Willie Anderson advanced on the New Zealand formation to finish nose-to-nose with Shelford). Shontayne Hape, England’s Maori-descent centre who has also played rugby league for New Zealand, told London’s Daily Telegraph before playing against the country of his birth last year: “I have done it [the haka] before but if I give any advice to my team-mates it will be to stand tall, stare them back in the eyes and let them know we will accept the challenge.” If a Scottish athlete wins gold at the Olympics for Great Britain, they play God Save the Queen, so when Scotland compete at rugby, why do they sing Flower of Scotland? God Save the Queen is the national anthem for the United Kingdom – England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. So, when those countries compete under the GB banner it’s one anthem for all; when playing rugby, they assume their individual rallying cry. The Welsh have Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (Land of My Fathers), the Scots Flower of Scotland, while Ireland, competing as a united side, will sing Ireland’s Call (for Dublin games the Republic’s anthem, The Soldier’s Song, is also sung). England stick with God Save the Queen, though there has been debate about using a dedicated song such as Jerusalem, which is used at the Commonwealth Games. Should I be worried if I see a Frenchman with a cockerel stuffed in his bag? Don’t worry – it’s not an animal rights stunt, though it might cause stadium security staff a few headaches. French fans have traditionally tried to smuggle a cockerel into grounds and when les Tricolores get their noses in front, that’s when le coq sticks his beak in, being surreptitiously released onto the terrain. What about individual beliefs and superstitions? Michael Jones, the New Zealand flanker who starred in the 1987 and 1991 campaigns, refused to play on Sundays due to his religious faith. Other players have had slightly more secular beliefs. Australian legend David Campese always insisted on running out last. England’s Jonny Wilkinson never warms up in his England shirt – though he prefers to call this part of his routine rather than a superstition. And number 13 – lucky for some? Will Greenwood’s superstition was something of a[...]

Rugby world cup stage Japan aiming to reach new position

Rugby world cup (RWC) stage Japan aiming to reach new position Japan ended a run of 13 consecutive RWC defeats with a 12-12 draw with Canada at France 2007 and the Canucks, along with Tonga, are the sides that Kirwan’s men will be aiming to beat in New Zealand. The last time John Kirwan was involved in a Rugby World Cup on home soil he proved one of the stars of the tournament, helping New Zealand to lift the Webb Ellis Cup back in 1987. Twenty-four years on that remains the All Blacks’ only RWC success, but while Kirwan hopes that monkey will disappear from New Zealand backs, he has another target in mind, helping Japan secure their most successful ever tournament. Kirwan, heading to his second RWC as Japan coach, has set the Brave Blossoms the target of winning two of their Pool A matches, a return which would secure them automatic qualification for RWC 2015 as the third ranked team. However, Kirwan also wants Japan to be competitive in their first two matches against France on 10 September at North Harbour Stadium, and hosts New Zealand four days later in Hamilton. More complete outfit “I am very happy with the side,” said Kirwan. “We have spent the last four years putting the team together and everyone understands how we want to play. We have a good mix of youth and experience. “We are a much more complete team than four years ago. It’s very important that we go to the World Cup with a settled side. This is a well established team, but they will need to prepare as it will be pretty intense over there. “It’s important that we achieve the goals we set four years ago and that means being competitive in the first two games and winning the last two.” Takeshi Kikutani will captain a squad comprising 16 forwards and 14 backs with Sione Vatuvei the only player to make the cut who didn’t feature in the successful HSBC Asian 5 Nations and IRB Pacific Nations Cup campaigns in 2011. Vatuvei, who will follow in the footsteps of his older brother Luatangi Samurai Vatuvei - a member of the Japan squad at RWC 2007, earned his spot at the expense of Tadasuke Nishihara, labelled “a good player for the future” by Kirwan. The vastly experienced wings Hitoshi Ono and Hirotoki Onozawa are the two oldest players in the Brave Blossoms’ squad at 33, while flanker Michael Leitch is the youngest member at 22. Japan squad for RWC 2011: Forwards: Hisateru Hirashima, Naoki Kawamata, Yusuke Aoki, Shota Horie, Hiroki Yuhara, Kensuke Hatakeyama, Nozomu Fujita, Hitoshi Ono, Toshizumi Kitagawa, Luke Thompson, Justin Ives, Takashi Kikutani (captain), Michael Leitch, Sione Vatuvei, Ryukoliniasi Holani, Itaru Taniguchi. Backs: Fumiaki Tanaka, Tomoki Yoshida, Atsushi Hiwasa, James Arlidge, Murray Williams (Toyota Industries Shuttles), Yuta Imamura, Ryan Nicholas, Koji Taira, Alisi Tupuailai, Hirotoki Onozawa, Kosuke Endo, Takehisa Usuzuki, Shaun Webb, Taihei Ueda. Squad subject to RWCL approval. [...]

Tendulkar made an unbeaten 152

Master blaster Sachin Tendulkar scored his 48th Test hundred to lead India’s fightback on the third day of the second Test against Sri Lanka at Colombo on Wednesday. The batting maestro reached his ton in 167 balls which was studded with 13 boundaries and a six.Suresh Raina scored a fighting century on debut and Sachin Tendulkar made an unbeaten 152 as India avoided the follow on Thursday in the second test against Sri Lanka. Resuming day four at 382-4 and needing 61 more runs to avoid the follow on, Raina and Tendulkar added 95 runs in the opening session to reach 477-4 at lunch. They had added an unbroken 236 runs for the fifth wicket. Tendulkar recorded his 48th test century, facing 264 balls, hitting 20 fours and a six. Raina was unbeaten on 112, facing 213 balls and hitting 11 fours and two sixes. He became the ninth Indian to score a century on his test debut. Sri Lanka scored 642-4 in its first innings and leads the series 1-0. With only eight wickets having fallen in 10 sessions, the game looked headed toward a draw. India was vulnerably placed on 241-4 on Wednesday needing 200 more runs to avoid the follow-on when Tendulkar and Raina paired together. Tendulkar made Sri Lanka pay for a dropped catch by wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene off seamer Dilhara Fernanado when he was 29 runs, scoring his sixth test century for 2010. India started a strong reply to Sri Lanka's first innings score Wednesday with openers Virender Sehwag and Murali Vijay sharing 165 runs, but Sri Lanka spinners Suraj Randiv and Ajantha Mendis struck back taking two wickets each.India were vulnerably placed on 243/4 at tea on day three needing 200 runs to avoid follow on, but it reached 382/4 at stumps. India just need 61 runs to avoid follow on with six wickets in hand.Tendulkar, who holds the record of scoring highest number of centuries, played brilliant cricket with Suresh Raina to dominate the day. Sachin also equalled the former Australian captain Steve Waugh's Test record to have played the most number of matches (168). Tendulkar shared an unbroken 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket with debutant Suresh Raina. Tendulkar was unbeaten on 108 at stumps while Raina, who made a half-century in his maiden Test innings, was not out on 66 off 133 balls, including eight boundaries. Earlier, VVS Laxman departed after a slow partnership with Sachin Tendulkar to leave India tottering at 243 for four at tea. Tendulkar and Laxman almost batted through the second session but Ajantha Mendis broke the slow 68-run stand by trapping the stylish Hyderabadi 10 minutes before tea break. Tendulkar, who was dropped on 29 by Prasanna Jayawardene off Dilhara Fernando, was batting on 39 and debutant Suresh Raina was yet to open his account. Laxman (29) and Tendulkar dug in went about their business slowly and raised a stand of 68-run to deny the Lankan bowlers any success for almost two hours. The mid-session produced 70 runs after the troubled opening session, which saw India being jolted by three quick blows including that of explosive Virender Sehwag. Tendukar's runs came off 95 balls while Laxman consumed 98 balls for his 29-run knock. The duo slowed down the proceedings by playing a lot of dot balls and relied on ones and twos to keep the scoreboard moving. Laxman was lucky as his edges, off spinner Suraj Randiv and paceman Dammika Prasad, fell short of fielders. Laxman finally got out as he failed to read a Mendis googly and was caught in front of the wicket.[...]

Maradona Claims Betrayal by soccer officials

Maradona Claims Betrayal by Argentina OfficialsDiego Maradona said he was lied to and betrayed by Argentina soccer officials who decided not to renew his contract as coach of the national team. Maradona, whose team was beaten by Germany in a World Cup quarterfinal, said Carlos Bilardo, the national team director, and Julio Grondona, the association president, worked to undermine him. Maradona, 49, read from a script in a restaurant in a Buenos Aires suburb and took no questions. In a meeting Monday, Bilardo asked Maradona to continue without seven of his assistants. Maradona said he could not meet those conditions.Diego Maradona said he was the subject of lies and betrayal by soccer officials after his contract as coach of Argentina’s national team wasn’t renewed.Maradona, who guided his country to the World Cup quarterfinals this month, said yesterday that he was “lied to” by Argentine Football Association President Julio Grondona and had been “betrayed” by national team manager Carlos Bilardo.“All my team and I were ready to continue,” Maradona, 49, told reporters on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. “They called me to put out a fire and we put it out. I’ve given everything.”The association’s executive committee “unanimously resolved” not to extend his deal two days ago because Maradona rejected requests to change his aides, committee member Rafael Savino said. Maradona told Argentine television this week that he wouldn’t continue in the post he took in late 2008 if the association insisted on changes to his backroom team.“I stand by all my people, from the masseuse to the equipment man,” Maradona said yesterday, reading from a prepared statement. His staff included two doctors, two assistant coaches, two physical trainers, a press officer and a kitman.Maradona said that Grondona told him after the World Cup quarterfinal loss to Germany on July 3 that he wanted him to continue. When the pair met three days ago, Grondona said that seven of his aides had to leave, according to Maradona.‘Impossible’“By telling me that, he was in fact telling me that he didn’t want me to stay,” Maradona said. “He knows that it would have been impossible for me to continue if my aides wouldn’t continue.”Association spokesman Ernesto Cherquis Bialo didn’t return a phone call from Bloomberg seeking comment.Maradona, who led Argentina to its last World Cup title in 1986 and the final four years later, took over the national team in November 2008. He used more than 100 players, winning 18 and losing six of his 24 international games in charge.Argentina lost six matches in 2009, the first time since 1919 that it had so many defeats in a calendar year. Maradona didn’t oversee that year’s loss to Catalonia because he was banned for a profanity-laced tirade toward journalists following a World Cup qualifying game.In South Africa, Argentina exited in a 4-0 defeat to Germany that was its most lopsided World Cup loss in 36 years.Maradona’s team finished fifth at the tournament, according to soccer governing body FIFA, Argentina’s best result since losing in the 1990 final.Batista, BilardoSergio Batista, the coach of Argentina’s under-20 team, will lead the senior squad in its next match, an Aug. 11 exhibition against Ireland. Batista played with Maradona at the 1986 World Cup and coached Argentina to the gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.Bilardo, who coached Argentina at the 1986 and 1990 World Cups, will continue in his role, Cherquis Bialo said two days ago. Bilardo took the position when Maradona was named coach in 2008. Last year, Bilardo told reporters he would quit if Maradona left the national team.Argentina is scheduled to host next year’s Copa America as it seeks a first major trophy at the senior level since 1993.[...]

Pakistan Plane Crash

A total of 152 people were confirmed to have been killed in a plane crash that occurred Wednesday morning in the Margalla hills in the Pakistani capital Islamabad, reported local media.Among the killed, there were six crew members including two pilots and 146 passengers, said the report, adding that all the people aboard the plane have been killed in the disaster, including at least 20 women and seven children as well as two Americans. It was the worst plane crash ever in Pakistan, and rescue workers battled fires and muddy conditions as they searched in vain to find survivors on the densely wooded hillside where the flight went down. The crash left twisted metal wreckage hanging from trees and scattered across the ground on a bed of broken branches. Clouds of dense gray smoke rose up from the burning wreckage as a helicopter hovered above. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear, but Defense Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar said the government does not suspect terrorism. The plane left the southern city of Karachi at 7:45 a.m. for a two-hour Airblue flight to Islamabad and was trying to land during cloudy and rainy weather, said Pervez George, a civil aviation official.Airblue is a private service based in Karachi, Pakistan's largest city, and Wednesday's flight was believed to be carrying mostly Pakistanis.Rescue workers scouring the heavily forested hills recovered nearly 80 bodies from the wreckage, said Pakistan's National Disaster Management Authority in a statement. The flight was carrying 146 passengers and six crew members, said George. The aircraft was an Airbus A321, and the flight number was ED202, he said.Interior Minister Rehman Malik initially said five people survived the crash and were rescued, but those reports turned out to be wrong. The crash site covered a large area on both sides of the hills, including a section behind Faisal Mosque, one of Islamabad's most prominent landmarks, and not far from the Daman-e-Koh resort. At the Islamabad airport, hundreds of friends and relatives of those on board the flight swarmed ticket counters desperately seeking information. A large cluster of people also surrounded a passenger list posted near the Airblue ticket counter.Saqlain Altaf told Pakistan's ARY news channel he was on a family outing in the hills when he saw the plane looking unsteady in the air. "The plane had lost balance, and then we saw it going down," he said, adding he heard the thunderous crash. The Pakistan Airline Pilot Association said the plane appeared to have strayed off course, possibly because of the poor weather.Raheel Ahmed, a spokesman for the airline, said an investigation would be launched into the cause of the crash. The plane had no known technical issues, and the pilots did not send any emergency signals, Ahmed said.Airbus said it would provide technical assistance to Pakistani authorities responsible for the investigation. The aircraft was initially delivered in 2000, and was leased to Airblue in January 2006. It accumulated about 34,000 flight hours during some 13,500 flights, it said. The last major plane crash in Pakistan was in July 2006 when a Fokker F-27 twin-engine aircraft operated by Pakistan International Airlines slammed into a wheat field on the outskirts of the central Pakistani city of Multan, killing all 45 people on board.Airblue flies within Pakistan as well as internationally to the United Arab Emirates, Oman and the United Kingdom. The only previous recorded accident for Airblue, a carrier that began flying in 2004, was a tail-strike in May 2008 at Quetta airport by one of the airline's Airbus A321 jets. There were no casualties and damage was minimal, according to the U.S.-based Aviation Safety Network. The Airbus A320 family of medium-range jets, which includes the A321 model that crashed Wednesday, is one of the most popular in the world, with ab[...]

Obama Deception Censored from You Tube

“The Obama Deception", one of Alex Jones’ most popular documentary films has been censored on You Tube. The most viewed online version of the film, which had more than 6.5 million views, has been illegally removed from the You Tube account “ChangeDaChannel”. The URL link of the said video ranked among the top results of the keyword “Obama”.Marketing ploy or blatant breach of constitutionally protected free speech. That is the choice being left to the people after an alleged hack of right-wing radio host's handle on Radio host Alex Jones claims on a YouTube video that someone, or some agency, hacked into his organization's YouTube account and started deleting his files, specifically a movie titled "The Obama Deception."Since ChangeDaChannel’s upload of the video has been deleted, numerable links to this version of the film throughout the web are now dead.Verifiable facts: The movie Obama Deception Censored in question is documentary-style film that focuses on the Obama and Bush administrations' connection to the New World Order conspiracy. The film was written, directed and produced by Alex Jones, a conservative radio talk show host who openly supports what many would describe to be conspiracy theories. The film, "The Obama Deception" was released in 2009 in the United States, according to the Internet Movie Database, A trailer for the film can be found on YouTube here.Google Trends rankings showed the film as the number one searched term – in a matter of hours subsequent to Jones’ challenge to drive the “The Obama Deception” to the top of search engine listings. The aforementioned video’s hits or view count rose to almost 100,000 on that same day.As a result of the film being a top online trend since Jones’ rallying call last week, dozens of articles and reviews have been published by online newspapers and blogs, thus increasing the attention the film has been receiving. Is it really just a coincidence that the most viewed version of the film has been illegally deleted after it became the top search engine result when a person so much as types the word “Obama”?“This was a criminal act, and You Tube needs to investigate, track the IP and find out who did it,” Alex Jones said. “The Obama Deception was getting more and more popular, and the establishment doesn’t like the fact that it exposes the Left-Right paradigm and identifies Obama as a puppet,” he added. Before the Obama Deception even released, FBI officials have visited Jones’ office in an attempt to gather information about the documentary and the office employees. Thus, it is not surprising that “The Obama Deception” has been getting a lot of criticisms since its release in March 2009. Aside from attempts to discredit the information the film endorses, effort has also been focused on limiting and ultimately, blocking access to the film online. At the moment, the film is currently being re-uploaded. This procedure is somewhat lengthy due to file compression issues with You Tube. The Accusation: Alex Jones, in a statement posted to his YouTube channel, claimed that someone had hacked into his channel by figuring out the channel's "pass code." Once in, he claims, his director saw that someone was deleting the files that contained Mr. Jones's movies, specifically "Police State 4" and "The Obama Deception." Fortunately, they were able to change the pass code before any additional damage could be done.Who could have perpetrated such an act?Alex Jones does not attempt to lay blame for the incident on any one individual or agency or organization, but he say that "this was an inside job, by either a YouTube or Google employee, or someone they gave the pass code to, and YouTube needs to launch an investigation and track back the IP addresses from where[...]

Louis Oosthuizen holds onto lead at British Open Golf

Tiger Woods changes putter again for final round of the British Open at St. Andrews. Woods changed to a Nike Method putter prior to the tournament in an effort to conquer the slower greens of the Old Course. He took 99 putts in his first three rounds, including 35 yesterday, to fall 12 shots behind leader Louis Oosthuizen. At the start of the week Woods ditched the putter which has won him 13 of his 14 majors, including the past two Opens over the Old Course by eight and five shots, in favour of a Method model which he hoped would help him deal with the slower speed of the greens on the Old Course.Tiger Woods has switched putter for the second time in a week in a last-gasp bid to revive his Open Championship chances at St Andrews today. But after taking 99 putts in the first three rounds to lie 12 shots off the lead, held by South African Louis Oosthuizen, Woods abandoned the experiment and saw it pay instant dividends. With his trusty Scotty Cameron putter, made by Titleist, the world No1 holed from seven feet on the first and five feet on the third for birdie, improving to five-under par and within 10 shots of Oosthuizen, due out with England's Paul Casey in the last group shortly after 2pm.Scotland's Paul Lawrie recovered from 10 shots behind after 54 holes to win the Open at Carnoustie in 1999 – an Open championship record – but needed a large helping hand from Jean van de Velde to do so.Europe's most recent major champion, the US Open winner Graeme McDowell, was five-under alongside Woods, going to the turn in 33 and adding another birdie on the 10th after a superb approach to within two feet.Eldrick Tont "Tiger" Woods (born December 30, 1975) is an American professional golfer whose achievements to date rank him among the most successful golfers of all time. Currently the World No. 1, he was the highest-paid professional athlete in 2008, having earned an estimated $110 million from winnings and endorsements.Woods has won 14 professional major golf championships, the second highest of any male player (Jack Nicklaus leads with 18), and 71 PGA Tour events, third all time.[6] He has more career major wins and career PGA Tour wins than any other active golfer. He is the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam, and the youngest and fastest to win 50 tournaments on tour. Additionally, Woods is only the second golfer, after Jack Nicklaus, to have achieved a career Grand Slam three times. Woods has won 16 World Golf Championships, and has won at least one of those events each of the 11 years they have been in existence.Woods has held the number one position in the world rankings for the most consecutive weeks and for the greatest total number of weeks. He has been awarded PGA Player of the Year a record ten times,[7] the Byron Nelson Award for lowest adjusted scoring average a record eight times, and has the record of leading the money list in nine different seasons. On December 11, 2009, Woods announced he would take an indefinite leave from professional golf to focus on his marriage after he admitted infidelity. His multiple infidelities were revealed by over a dozen women, through many worldwide media sources.[8][9] Woods returned to competition for the 2010 Masters on April 8, 2010,[10] after a break lasting 20 weeks id="leoHighlights_top_iframe" name="leoHighlights_top_iframe" title="leoHighlights_top_iframe" src="about:blank" vspace="0" hspace="0" marginwidth="0" marginheight="0" allowtransparency="true" style="position: absolute; top: 0px; left: 0px; width: 520px; height: 294px; z-index: 2147483647;" width="520" frameborder="0" height="294" scrolling="no"> id="leoHighlights_bottom_iframe" name="leoHighlights_bottom_iframe" title="leoHighlights_bottom_iframe" src="about:blank" vspace="0" hspace="0" marginwidth[...]

Golf third round begins

winds greeted players at the Old Course for Saturday's start of the third round of the British Open, where Tiger Woods is among those taking aim at leader Louis Oosthuizen.

Oosthuizen, a 27-year-old South African who missed the cut in seven of his eight previous majors, stood on 12-under par 132 after 36 holes, five strokes ahead of 50-year-old American Mark Calcavecchia, the 1989 Open champion.

Both men took advantage of early Friday starts to post rounds of five-under 67 before rivals were hammered by breezes gusting to 41mph, winds so strong they stopped play for 65 minutes and forced a Saturday finish to round two.

Oosthuizen enjoyed the largest mid-point lead at a British Open since Bobby Clampett led by five in 1982 at Royal Troon. The American collapsed at the weekend and only finished in a share of 10th as Tom Watson took the title.

World number one Tiger Woods and first-round leader Rory McIlroy were among those who struggled in Friday gales. Woods fought to a one-over 73 and is eight strokes back. McIlroy fired an 80 after an opening 63 to fall 11 off the pace.

"We didn't get what Louis got. He got it 16 holes downwind," Woods said. "That's just the way it goes. If you get a good break you have to capitalize on it. He certainly did. Everyone else, we had to grind it out, gut it out."

Unpredictable winds are par for the course at the birthplace of golf, where Woods won British Open titles in 2000 and 2005 and hopes to become the first three-time Open winner at St. Andrews.

"Everyone is dealing with the wind and everyone is playing the same golf course - just got to go out there and execute," Woods said.

Woods, a 14-time major champion chasing the record 18 majors won by Jack Nicklaus, has not won since last November when a sex scandal engulfed him and led to a five-month layoff.

While the world number one has made a comeback and shared fourth at both the Masters and US Open, Woods has not shown the overpowering form that made him a sporting icon in the wake of his admitted infidelity with multiple mistresses.

Englishmen Lee Westwood and Paul Casey, South Korean amateur Jin Jeong and Spain's Alejandro Canizares shared third on 138, six off the pace.

British Open debutantes Jeong, a 20-year-old who won the British Amateur crown last month, and Canizares, the son of four-time Ryder Cup starter Jose Maria Canizares, each finished Saturday morning with birdies at the 18th to move up.

Seven others began the round on 139, including reigning US Open champion Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, two-time US Open champion Retief Goosen of South Africa and 51-year-old American Tom Lehman, the 1996 British Open winner.

A total of 77 players made the cut at two-over 146. Those missing the mark included five-time Open champion Watson and three-time major winners Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington.

Mona Lisa secrets may be unlocked

The enigmatic smile remains a mystery, but the French scientists say they have cracked a few secrets.Specialists from the Center for Research and Restoration of the Museums of France found that da Vinci used up to 30 layers of paint on his works to meet his standards of perfection.Added up, all the layers are less than 40 micrometers, or about half the thickness of a human hair. The technique, called "sfumato", allowed da Vinci to give outlines and contours a hazy quality and create an illusion of depth and shadow.Philippe Walter, CNSR Senior Researcher, said, "We have developed a new software to interpret the data, and obtain new information concerning the superimposition of the layers of paintings. In the case of "Mona Lisa", Leonardo Da Vinci used a mixture of maybe oil and resins, a binder with a very low amount of pigments. I have never participated in a "tea party"

Why can't black Americans have a tea party movement of our own?I have never participated in a "tea party" demonstration or rally. Nor do I think I ever will. The reason is simple: I am black and I am proud and no self-respecting black American would ever openly join that conservative movement or support its goals. Right?I'm exaggerating a bit, but really I'm just channeling a debate that erupted last week. At its annual convention in St. Louis, the NAACP passed a resolution denouncing the "racist element" within the tea party movement. "We don't have a problem with the tea party's existence," explained President Benjamin Jealous. "We have an issue with their acceptance and welcoming of white supremacists into their organizations."Sarah Palin, the highest-profile tea party supporter, wrote on her Facebook page last week that "the charge that tea party Americans judge people by the color of their skin is false, appalling and is a regressive and diversionary tactic to change the subject at hand."The whole discussion is a prime example of how we have, once again, become a very polarized nation, both politically and racially.I'm supposed to be on the NAACP's side of this argument. I am a member of the nation's oldest black sorority and the founder of a national organization that focuses on professional black women. And I have a book coming out early next year on the unique challenges facing college-educated black women in the United States. I have a lot to lose by lining up with the wrong crowd: I could be pegged an Uncle Tom or a sellout. And so I have been fearful and silent. But I am increasingly uncomfortable staying quiet. The fact is that I support many of the core goals of the tea party movement, not as a black American -- but as an American. Let me be very clear about what I agree with and what I find intolerable. I do not support those who hate my president because he is a black man -- and that kind of hatred is often displayed on racially charged and denigrating signs at tea party rallies. I do not support those who spew racial venom, especially when incendiary words come from leaders within the movement, as they did last week from Mark Williams, national spokesman for the Tea Party Express. And I abhor and reject anyone who would spit upon or yell racial epithets at an esteemed public servant such as Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), and other black members of Congress, as tea party supporters reportedly have done. But that visceral hatred is not the entirety of the movement. I admire the principle of protesting peaceably against your government. I, too, am fed up by vast unemployment, underemployment, and making do with smaller paychecks and increasingly burdensome taxes. Like many protesters, I agree that the government has gotten too large and has a say over too much of our lives. I think that our nation's immigration laws should be enforced most vigorously. And I agree that capitalism and a strong national defense are the best ways for this great country to continue to thrive, defeat terrorism and lead as the world's sole superpower. These are sentiments that many of my black friends, neighbors and family members share. Although I may be virtually alone among my black peers in saying this publicly, I know I'm not the only one who feels this way. In a recent USA Today/Gallup poll, only 77 percent of people who identified as members of the tea party described themselves as white. And talking to my friends -- fellow black professionals -- I hear the same kinds of things: Our taxes are too high, I had to tap into my retirement account, I could lose my home if my husband loses his job, I worry about what kind of future we are leaving our kids with all o[...]

Robbie Williams could be set to earn

(image) Robbie To Sign £100M Solo Deal?
He’s in the midst of a record-breaking bidding war...

Robbie Williams could be set to earn up to £100 million when he negotiates a new solo contract later this year.

Following the announcement this week that the Rock DJ singer will rejoin Take That for a lucrative album and tour, he is now said to be the focus of a record company bidding war that could top £100 million.

Robbie broke records back in 2002 when he signed an £80 million contract with EMI, which is due to expire in October. Renewed interest in the singer, despite the relatively poor performance of his last two albums, has reportedly led to major labels including Sony and Universal opening negotiations with Robbie’s management.

“Signing Robbie Williams is the holy grail for labels at the moment,” a source explained. “He's already struck the biggest record deal in history, so whatever he is offered will have to compare favourably to that… He could be the first British artist to ever land a £100million deal.”

But before his current deal ends, Robbie will release a greatest hits album, In And Out Of Consciousness: The Greatest Hits 1990-2010, in October. It includes a duet with Gary Barlow called Shame, complete with a Brokeback Mountain-themed video.

After a 15-year wait and months of eager anticipation we can confirm that the rumours are indeed true: Robbie and Take That are back together and releasing an all-new album.

Following the reunion of all reunions in New York last September, Robbie, Gary, Howard, Jason and Mark have secretly recorded a full studio album with producer Stuart Price, which will be released later this year.

"I get embarrassingly excited when the five of us are in a room," said Robbie, who also duets with Gary Barlow on new solo single, Shame. "It feels like coming home."

Bandmate Mark Owen added, "Getting the five of us to be in a room together, although always a dream, never actually seemed like becoming a reality. Now the reality of the five of us making a record together feels like a dream. It’s been an absolute delight spending time with Rob again. But I’m still a better footballer."

And what does Jason Orange think about Robbie's re-joining the boys? "Flippin’ brilliant, absolutely brilliant," he said. "I’m over the moon that Robbie’s back with us, however long it lasts. I just want to enjoy our time with him. Life is beautifully strange sometimes."

Between them, the five-piece have have sold 80 million albums, performed to over 14.5 million people live, won 19 BRIT Awards, had 13 number one albums, 17 number one singles, eight MTV awards and five Ivor Novello awards!

Take That's forthcoming album, which is currently untitled, will be released in November 2010, a massive twenty years since the band first performed live together in 1990. Wow!

The Obama phenomenon is a hoax carefully crafted by the captains of the New World Order. He is being pushed as savior in an attempt to con the American people into accepting global slavery. We have reached a critical juncture in the New World Order’s plans. It’s not about Left or Right: it’s about a One World Government. The international banks plan to loot the people of the United States and turn them into slaves on a Global Plantation. Covered in this film: who Obama works for, what lies he has told, and his real agenda. If you want to know the facts and cut through all the hype, this is the film for you.International bankers purposefully engineered the worldwide financial meltdown to bankrupt the nations of the planet and bring in World Government. Obama plans to loot the middle class, destroy pensions and federalize the states so that the population is completely dependent on the Central Government. Jones is a nationally-syndicated radio host with a daily listening audience in the hundreds of thousands and he has directed and produced over 20 documentary films. The most recent film, The Obama Deception, could in time be remembered as one of the most important films in our history. The movie is indicative of being rush-released, which it clearly was. Timing is everything. Mr Jones knew what he was doing in getting this film out to the masses fast and I would venture is evidence of its critical timeliness at this moment in history. Never have so many people been so tantalizingly close to waking up their fellow man to the realities of the world we live in. This film may be the one to finally do that.Barack Obama, despite what the Madison Avenue spin doctors try to tell/sell us, is not the ONE. I think Alex Jones and his film The Obama Deception might just be the ONE. The title [...]
