Alternative Sources for Book Reviews 2008-11-26T21:42:45.102-08:00 Watch 5000 Satellite Channels on your Pc!Alternative Sources for Book Reviewsby klivelyOften I am asked how does one go about getting reviews for a novel. Most authors I have met over the years have been under the impression that the only valid reviews are found in the newspaper or in a trade periodical. While such reviews can be a feather in an author 's cap, particularly if they are positive, they should not be considered the only source of PR for a book.An author can find a wealth of resources for obtaining book reviews, if one knows where to look. Yet, before you send those books out for review, it is important to consider this question: when should a book go out for review?Too soon, or too late? How soon is too soon for a book to be distributed for review? Depending upon the review source and the marketing schedule of a publisher, advanced review copies of books (also known as ARCs) may go out to reviews as early as four months before the books release. There may be many reasons for the advanced promotion. A reviewer 's schedule may be such that it may take four months to get to a particular book, and this way the publisher is ensuring a timely review. Other reasons may be seasonal: if a novel is written for the Christmas season, for example, the publisher may want to garner advanced reviews to tantalize readership during the peak of holiday shopping.Whatever the reason for sending out ARCs, the message is clear: a book does not necessarily have to be released and for sale for the author to start collecting reviews. If words of praise are collected early enough, the publisher may want to include them on the front or back cover to entice readers to buy. Just make certain the ARC sent out for review is clean, free of errors and bound in a font size that is easily read.Watch 5000 Satellite Channels on your Pc!Once you have the best draft available, it is time to distribute to reviewers. Here are just a few suggestions that are not necessarily limited to the media.Professionals in the field: If your book is non-fiction, be it about politics, self-help topics, or a biography, it would be to your advantage to have an endorsement from an expert in your book 's topic. If you have written about an event in the Civil War, considering approaching an historian specializing in that era. If your book is religious in nature, seek endorsement from a noted clergyman.Authors of similar works: Take a look at the fiction shelves of your favorite bookstore. You may notice that some novels include endorsements from other authors of the same genre. This is especially true for romance and mystery, communities so tightly knit considering the annual conferences these authors attend for networking purposes. If you have written a romance or mystery novel, you may wish to seek other authors for a word of praise. A cordial letter to the authors of your choice may yield good results for you. You might find some authors are willing to read your work, if it means extra PR for them in the form of their names on your cover. Don't feel discouraged, however, if an author you have contacted declines or does not respond. Authors who write for a living often have busy schedules, and may not be able to afford the time needed for an unbiased endorsement of your work.Organizations relative to your work: So you have written a mystery with a dog theme. Does this mean you are limited to mystery reviewers? Not necessarily. If a dog show is the setting for the story, you may want to consider approaching professionals on the dog show circuit to read your book. This can be especially helpful in generating word of mouth publicity for your book as well. People interested in dogs who don't normally read mystery may be curious enough to buy your novel.Think about the settings and occupations featured in your novel. Is there a corresponding organization that would make a good target audience for your book? Foster that connection by bringing in some potential reviewers.Book Review websites: A quick Internet search for book review websites will yield a number of resources [...]
Book Review: the Book of Common Prayer 2008-10-15T20:40:41.394-07:00 Book Review: The Book of Common Prayer, "My carry-with-me copy is this size, and I recommend it for traveling places..."by Peter MenkinHere I am daring to comment on this wonderful book, used by Episcopalians and one of the prayer and rubric publications that unite Anglicans worldwide. (There are about 77 million Anglicans in the world, and most have their own "version" of this wonderful and inspired book, though perhaps this specific size of which I write and this specific American version, may not be familiar to them all.)My copy that is this size, and at a similar good price as this one (take advantage of a good offer, by the way), has been used by me for about ten or so years. It's been a durable book, though worn now and the leather cover warped, despite my treating it from time to time. But then I carry it in my car, and sometimes leave it on the seat where the sun hits it. Nonetheless, it has proved durable. There are so many personal uses for the prayer book, and touching on some of them, it is important for me to note in this recitation, that the primary purpose of this issue of The Book of Common Prayer for me is taking it to nursing, hospital, and similar places (including home visits), to administer home Communion. It is an excellent size for traveling, and as I may not have mentioned, also offers the complete book with all the prayers and this includes, "Communion under Special Circumstances," used in the Episcopal Church for bringing home communion. As a licensed lay Minister in my Church, and as an Oblate, I am always moved and informed by the same words from that shared, intimate service. To give you reader, an idea of the character of the book, here is a quote from the beginning prayer of the section "Communion under Special Circumstances.""Almighty Father, whose dear Son, on the night before he suffered, instituted the Sacrement of his Body and Blood: Mercifully grant that we may receive it thankfully in remembrance of Jesus Christ our Lord, who in these holy mysteries gives us a pledge of eternal life; and who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen."There is flexibility in the prayers, and the rubrics allow the lay minister or clergy administering the Eucharist to do the following: "After the reading [found before the opening prayer quoted above], the Celebrant may comment on it briefly." Also, "Suitable prayers may be offered, concluding with the following or some other Collect."My opinion is the book, both a religious, spiritually literary, and inspired work, encourages spiritual discussion of a religious nature after or before the words of the service. In this way, the Eucharist is a community or communion activity, where the idea of sharing the Church experience is enlarged in the presence of God and man. When I visit the elderly, especially the frail elderly in my visits, I sometimes share Psalms. The book contains all 150 Psalms, its own translation, of course. This one is a favorite of mine, not only because of its familiarity, but as well because it is a kind of statement about the journey and ministry with which I am engaged in this pastoral relationship:Psalm 23The Lord is my shepherdI shall not be in want.He makes me lie down in green pasturesand leads me beside still waters. He revives my souland guides me along right pathways for his Name's sake.Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I shall fear no evil;for you are with me;your rod and your staff, they comfort me.You spread a table before me in the presence of those who trouble me;you have anointed my head with oil,and my cup is running over.Surely your goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. This is a good place to end the review.(This review appeared originally on Amazon.com.)Notes on review: A friend tells me via email the review is "Too long and too much about your personal ministry. You might try reading other reviews (if any) or looking at what Church Publishing says about it."I am happy for the critique and suggestions. [...]
Book Reviews Sell Books 2008-09-02T22:50:59.905-07:00 Book Reviews Sell BooksAuthor: Reader ViewsEvery author wants glowing book reviews with quotable sentences to use as testimonials. A good review makes readers flock to the bookstore to buy the book. But how do authors get their books reviewed? While the process is not difficult, the book review industry is changing. Today’s authors must designate a portion of their marketing budget for book reviews, and they must know how to use those book reviews to sell books. Why Are Book Reviews Important?More than 200,000 books are published each year. Less than 2% of those books sell more than 500 copies. We’ve all heard the saying, “So many books. So little time.” People don’t want to waste time or money reading books they won’t enjoy, so they rely on book reviews to help them make buying decisions. Your book will stand out if it receives positive reviews from reliable reviewers.Where Do I Get a Book Review? There are five top book reviewers: Publishers Weekly, Kirkus, Library Journal, Midwest Book Review, and The New York Times; however, if you’re self-published, it is unlikely your book will be reviewed by any of them. Reviews from local newspapers and magazines will only help you sell books locally. Furthermore, print publications are phasing out book reviews. So where can an author still get a good book review? The Internet.Online book reviews are becoming standard, and your book’s review will reach a wider audience on the Internet. Online reviews level the playing field for self-published authors. Today, people are less inclined to read paper magazines and newspapers. They go online for information. Reviews posted at Amazon and other online sites are more accessible than print reviews. Reader Views and RebeccasReads are examples of reliable online book reviewers of both traditional and self-published books.Free vs. Paid ReviewsAuthors generally expect free book reviews; that was standard in the twentieth century—advertisements paid for the book reviews in print media. Today, however, authors must cover the cost of book reviews. A book reviewer may spend hours reading a book and writing a review, and he deserves compensation for his work. Consequently, authors must budget for the cost of book reviews. Authors are recommended to budget for mailing out a minimum of twenty books for review. How Do Paid Book Reviews Work?Paid reviews have multiple advantages. Most publications that offer free reviews do not guarantee a book review because of the volume of books submitted. Only by paying for a review can one be guaranteed. Reputable book reviewers will provide a review within a specific timeline—two weeks is standard. They will also provide a review tear-sheet for your use, and give you permission to quote the review, provided you credit them. Many reviewers will also post your review online at such places as their own website, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Ezine Articles, Goodreads and Authors Den.Several online book reviewers, such as Reader Views, will give you the option of a free or paid book review. Reader Views will review the book for free provided one of their reviewers is interested in it. If no one opts to review it after three months, the book is returned without a review. If authors do not want to wait three months for a review, an express review can be purchased to guarantee a review within two weeks.Several book reviewers, including Reader Views, also offer various publicity packages ranging from a single book review, to written and podcast radio interviews, virtual book tours, and book videos. Such packages allow authors the opportunity to get book reviews and publicity within their budget.Just because you pay for a book review does not mean a good review is guaranteed. It is better to receive an honest review than one that gives false praise. The reviewer’s reputation is at stake here; readers will not appreciate being misled to waste their time and money on a book that does not meet their expectations. How Do I Use a Book Review to Sell Books?Be[...]

Book Review - Secrets of the Millionaire Mind - Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth by T. Harv Eker 2008-08-27T19:44:04.307-07:00 Book Review - Secrets of the Millionaire Mind - Mastering the Inner Game of Wealth by T. Harv EkerBy Joan JonesDo you think like a millionaire? Just how does a millionaire think and what is the mental process used to attract wealth into their lives? T. Harve Eker tells you how to determine your "financial blueprint" which in turn determines your success in creating wealth. Once you are aware of the thoughts you continually think, your inner dialogue, Eker tells you in detail, step by step, how to change this to create the mind set you want. You can literally program yourself for financial success with these methods. You may be programmed for failure right from the start by events from your childhood or the past. How did your parents and family talked about money and rich people? Did you ever hear as a child "Rich people are greedy" "The rich get rich and the poor get poorer" "Money doesn't grow on trees" "You work hard and then you die" or "Why make more money-you'll just have to pay more taxes." Do any of these sound familiar? When I thought about my own childhood, I realized that my parents had both told me by word and example that money was hard to come by. You have to work hard for money, maybe at a job you don't like. I learned you CAN accomplish financial freedom but you have to pay a price for it. Making lots of money is never easy! These are part of my financial blueprint that I had to learn to change. If you have an inner dialogue that tells you rich people are bad or that money is hard to come by, Eker tells you how to overcome years of thought conditioning and replace old thoughts with new ones which will help you to your goals.. He tells you if you want to be rich, you must admire and like rich people-or you will never be one of them. Eker himself used to believe the rich were snobs-until he got to personally know some of those who had money. To make his own fortune, Eker opened one of the first retail fitness stores in North America which he grew to include 10 stores in only two and a half years. This book digs deep into your beliefs about money and rich people. If you want to feel you are a victim of circumstances or that fate is against you, this book isn't for you. If you want to feel empowered to direct your own financial destiny and are open to changing your thoughts, then Eker explains in everyday language, just how to do that.Eker also tells you that if you are married, you and your spouse should discuss your beliefs about money and your own "financial blue-prints" because if you have opposite beliefs about money, creating wealth will be much harder, if not impossible. Instead resolve to create a separate financial blueprint for you as a couple. Post this blueprint where you can see it and when discussions about money come up-instead of getting emotional or angry, calmly point to the blueprint you both agreed upon. This book really helped me to see how and why my spouse and I might have different approaches to our finances and how to change that for the better. In his book, Eker explains the "Wealth Files" or 17 specific ways that millionaires think differently than those who have no money. He also tells you how you can revise your thinking patterns so that you too can think like a millionaire. Once you revise your thinking, he tells you how to continually grow and expand that thinking.Eker gives assignments to help you along the way, like spending one week not complaining but instead being grateful for what you have. If a rich person complained because he got a scratch on his yaut, who would care, says Eker. Rich people talk about the next big deal or the next new stock investment. They think money and they believe in their own ability to attract money. Even if they should lose all their fortune, soon they can make it back again because they believe they can. While Secrets of the Millionaire Mind is not a book about the Law of Attraction, per se, T. Harv Eker does explain that how you think, the ene[...]
Summer Fantasy Book Reading For Teens and Young Adults 2008-08-11T21:11:07.489-07:00 Summer Fantasy Book Reading For Teens and Young AdultsBy Will KalifSome ClassicsA Wrinkle in Time - (Newberry Medal Winner) This is simply a beautiful book that has blazed a trail in modern children's fantasy by putting forward a story of several children embarking on a grand adventure; In this case to rescue their father. There is some fascinating and thoughtful stuff in this book like living stars and tesseracts. It is a perennial favorite and on every librarian's list.A Wizard of Earthsea - Written by Ursula K. Leguin this is the first book in a series called The EarthSea series. Short and light but extraordinarily beautiful. This first book in the series follows a young boy named Ged as he goes from being a simple goat herd to a powerful wizard. It is simply beautiful and it brings forth some wonderful and magical themes such as the concept that everything (including dragons) has a secret name. And if you know the secret name you can control the thing (including dragons). The Hobbit - This probably shouldn't be on this list but it is so good that I can't leave it off. With the absolute enormous success of the Lord of the Rings movies this book may be overlooked but I consider it better! It is also in the works to be a movie.Five Children and it - This is one of the most popular books written by Edith Nesbit who is often credited with creating the whole genre of children embarking on fantasy adventures. Her books are in the public domain now and can easily be found for free. The theme of this book is: Be careful what you ask for. You may get it! That's the message in this delightful tale of five youngsters who discover a bizarre sand creature that grants wishes. There's a catch, of course: the wishes come undone at sunset, and worse yet, things often get out of hand!Dragonflight - This book is a little more complex than earlier ones I have cited here and it tends toward being more of a novel for grownups but it very suitable for teens. We are introduced to a complex world of dragons through the main character Lessa. This book is often credited with being the book that has launched many a young girls writing career. It is the first book in a trilogy of books called The Dragon riders of Pern series.A Princess of Mars: - The first novel in the Edgar Rice Burroughs series and currently in the initial stages of being written into a movie or animation that will be made by Pixar. This is the first book in a series called John Carter of Mars and it is good rollicking fun in the tradition of the old pulp magazines. It is a favorite for young boys who like sword fighting big monsters.Contemporary fantasy and fictionWhen it comes to modern fantasy fiction for teens there is an enormous selection to choose from and that, in itself, could be an obstacle. Here are summaries of some of the more popular ones and I have also picked some that are currently slated to be made into a movie.Artemis Fowl Series - This series of books takes a little bit of an unusual position as far as children's books go because Artemis Fowl himself is a twelve year old genius and a criminal mastermind. The author of these books calls them Die Hard with Fairies! And the books are often characterized as being a high-octane and rip-roaring ride. It is a wildly popular series of books with a big website and even a wiki. There are currently five books in the series with the first being simply titled Artemis Fowl. The sixth book "The Time Paradox" is set to be released in July of 2008.Here, there be Dragons - The title itself is rather mysterious and harkens back to another time. This was the phrase that cartographers used to write in patches of ocean that were unexplored. The basic premise of this story will really resonate with teens that are fans of fantasy itself because it starts with the unusual meeting of three young strangers John, Jack, and Charles on a rainy night in London. We later find out these three young men are [...]

Book Reviews on End Times and Revelations 2008-07-23T07:50:27.079-07:00 Book Reviews on End Times and Revelations13th September 2007Author: Michael BradleyFor those of you who are looking for good bottom-line knowledge on end time events as specifically prophesied to occur by our Lord through His Word, here is a list of some of the best books on this hot topic. All of these authors are true experts in this field and you cannot go wrong with all of their teachings on this subject. Many people have a hard time in understanding the Book of Revelation, but all of these authors will help you interpret and understand this most important book in our Bible.I believe we are truly living in the end times and each Christian should have some of this bottom-line knowledge under their belts so they can help explain this to both other Christians who do not have much knowledge on this subject, and also to other nonbelievers who are too sensing something in the air with the way many of the end time events are now starting to come to pass.1. "Are We Living in the End Times?" by Tim LaHaye and Jerry JenkinsThe co-authors of the best-seller "Left Behind" series have written a very good factual book on all of the main end time events that will be occurring leading up to the visible return of Jesus back to our earth. Tim LaHaye has written several good non-fiction, factual books on end time events and I believe this to be one of his better books. Goes into very good detail on all of these end time events along with all of the Scripture verses to back it all up.2. "Revelation Unveiled" By Tim LaHayeAnother very good solid book from Tim LaHaye. This book in particular is the best I have seen from him to-date. Besides going into the end time events that will be occurring leading up to Jesus' 2nd coming to our earth, he goes further into all of this showing what is going to happen in the 1000 year millennium kingdom when Jesus will literally rule this earth from the city of Jerusalem - and then what we will get with the final ending to all of it - the New Heaven and New Earth. This is not only the best book he has done to-date, but it is one of the best books on this topic we have to-date in the Body of Christ. I can't recommend this particular book highly enough.3. "The End Times Controversy" by Tim LaHayeTim has written another good book on end times, but this one is to answer some of the critics who have a hard time in interpreting the Bible from more of a literal point of view. There is a big debate whether or not there will be a rapture, whether or not a real antichrist will really come, etc. Tim answers many of these questions in this book. Highly recommend this book if you want answers to some of the debates going on with this topic.4. "The Popular Encyclopedia of Bible Prophecy" by Tim Lahaye and Ed HindsonAnother very good solid book from these 2 authors. This is a beautiful hard-bound book that covers specific topics in alphabetical order so you can find what you may looking for at a very fast glance. I would highly recommend this book for those of you who are really wanting to have a firm and solid grasp on all of the basics on this topic. I consider this to be one of the better reference books on this topic. At a very quick glance, you will be able to locate very good Bible commentary on the specific end time events that will be occurring. This book is one of my personal favorites and I refer to it quite often in my studies on end times.5. "The Late Great Planet Earth" by Hal LindseyThis book started it all! Written back in the 70's, this book is still considered a classic. I believe Hal Lindsey was one of the first men that God anointed in our day and age to be able to understand and then explain all of these end time events to the rest of the Body. He is one of the most anointed men in the Body of Christ on this topic. 6. "Prince of Darkness" by Grant JeffreyAuthor Grant Jeffrey is another highly anointed man[...]
16 Christian Book Reviews 2008-07-21T20:49:46.549-07:00 16 Christian Book Reviews25th September 2007Author: Michael BradleyFor those of you are who are looking for some good reading covering a wide variety of topics, here is a list of some very good books covering some very interesting topics. Each one of these authors are truly anointed in their teachings and you cannot go wrong with their specific teachings on the subjects they are discussing in each of these books.1. "Approval Addiction: Overcoming Your Need to Please Everyone" by Joyce MeyerI believe Joyce Meyer to be one of the very best Bible teachers we have in the Body to-date. In this book, she gives you very good commentary and insight on the problem many of us have today in trying to please anyone and everyone. Many people have been set free from her teachings and I would highly recommend this book to anyone who has this particular problem in their thinking and how they relate and interact with others.2. "Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce MeyerAnother very solid book from Joyce Meyer. The Bible tells us that we are transformed by the renewing of our "minds." As a result, our minds are the battlefield between God, the devil and our flesh. Each Christian has to learn to how to walk in the Spirit and the ways of our God and stay away from wrong type of thinking that can eventually lead us into trouble that can end up bringing down major misfortune and trouble into our lives. You are what you think. You can become what you think. That is why the devil and his demons will always try to go after your mind and your thought process - in order to try and seduce you into their dark ways of living in this life as versus the Lord who will try and to lead us into His ways of thinking and living in this life. This is one of the best books she has ever written and she discusses one of the most important areas of spiritual development in a believer's life.3. "Be Anxious For Nothing: The Art of Casting Your Cares and Resting in God" by Joyce MeyerIn the fast-paced, high-stress world in which we now all live in, many people are having a hard time in finding any true peace. They are worrying about anything and everything. One of the greatest commands given to us by our Lord is to learn how to be anxious for nothing. Joyce does a very good job in covering the appropriate Scripture verses on this command and some of the ways you can learn how to do this in your own personal life. She gives very good examples of how she learned how to do it for herself as she used to be constantly worrying and complaining about everything. Once she was able to grasp this powerful revelation and truth from God's Word, and then learn how to really get it worked into her mindset and way of thinking and living in this life, she was then able to settle down and enjoy this life much more fully.4. "Your Best Life Now" by Joel OsteenThis book has become a national bestseller. This man truly flows with knowledge and revelation from the Lord and you cannot go wrong with any of his solid biblical teachings. He has one of the biggest churches in America.I know some have criticized him as being too seeker-sensitive in some of his sermons, but I believe this man is truly anointed by the Lord and this book will give you much practical, down-to-earth knowledge and wisdom on how to get the most out of your life in the Lord with what He is calling you to do for Him.5. "God's Generals: Why They Succeeded" by Roberts LiardonFor those of you who would like to learn about some of the saints in the past who have walked with higher levels of the anointing such as Smith Wigglesworth, Kathryn Kuhlmann, Aimee Semple Mcpherson and Marie Woodworth-Etter - this book will give you all of the basic fact of their ministries, how they all got started and some of the incredible things that had occurred in their ministries for the Lord. This book is a fascinating read into [...]

Book Review: This Land Is Their Land - Reports from a Divided Nation by Barbara Ehrenreich (Blogcritics.org) 2008-06-08T20:19:16.579-07:00 The writer-physician Sherwin B. Nuland explores phenomena that can't be explained by modern science; and the journalist Julie Salamon explores a Brooklyn hospital's boardrooms. The opening story in James Kelman's 1998 collection, The Good Times, is called 'Joe Laughed'. It's nine pages long and is told from the point of view of a boy who plays football on a patch of waste ground among derelict industrial buildings by the river in a large, unnamed city which British readers are bound to assume is Glasgow. You don't find out the boy's name, or his age, although hints and the boy's style of reflection encourage you to guess he's between 14 and 16. At half-time, the boy and two friends start exploring an abandoned factory. After a bit, the boy's friends hit him and run away laughing. Book Reviews for 6th GradePicture Book. Barron, T. A.. Baby Names Book Review 2008-06-03T00:27:44.775-07:00 Books are the storehouse of knowledge and they offer us immense wisdom and enlightenment. Without books it would be rather impossible to study and gain knowledge. However, sometimes you may not be an ardent fan of reading and it may be possible that you loathe reading thick books. Many people are quite high on themselves and yet fail to consider that there are others out there, who also have achieved, perhaps even well beyond their dreams. A review of To this Day by S.Y.Agnon at the Complete Review As good a place to start as any is 19 December 2001. On this date a dozen men, all foreign nationals, were interned in this country. Recognising the connotations of the term 'internment', discredited and abandoned in Northern Ireland, the government insisted this was not equivalent to arbitrary detention without trial, a practice forbidden by the European Convention on Human Rights except in extreme emergencies, because each man was free to leave. Atonement - A Story That Touches the Lives 2008-04-10T15:15:07.555-07:00 Most people believe that while they may be intuitive in a natural kind of way, when they try to do it intentionally, they get in their own way. This is the principal challenge to training them to use intuition. It becomes almost a Zen art to train a person to "just act natural on purpose." Coin Book Review - The Expert's Guide to Collecting and Investing in Rare Coins by Q David Bowers 2008-04-08T22:30:19.363-07:00 "Straight Talk for Success" is directed toward early and mid-career professionals, but anyone in need of motivation can easily apply its advice to their personal or professional life. Bud Bilanich developed his success model from his executive coaching work. The model identifies the five characteristics that successful people have in common: self-confidence, positive personal impact, outstanding performance, communication skills and interpersonal competence. Bilanich says one of the biggest mistakes people make regarding career and life success, is thinking that a good performance is enough to guarantee success. While outstanding performance is definitely necessary for success, Bilanich says successful people are more than just good performers. "Straight Talk for Success" teaches readers how to apply all five key success factors to their personal lives and careers. The book consists of 13 letters written to a very special Friesian mare who was at in livery at the time of the book's writing. The letters were written by her owner, M, who was traveling through France during the Christmas period, from 19 December, M's birthday, to the 31 of December, Belle's birthday. In Victorian England, Lizzie Parker wants to keep her life simple and uncomplicated. She loves the people of her village, tending her garden, and caring for her aging father, the local pastor. She falls in love with her father's curate, but her father has grander hopes for his only daughter. Into the Eisenshpritz Elif Batuman: Superheroes 2008-04-06T19:30:14.622-07:00 For the last few weeks, I've left the blue-sheathed national edition of the New York Times out in the yard, where it's tossed over the gate at 3 a.m. each morning, and gone straight to the paper's website, because news printed nine or ten hours ago is too old to keep up with the fast-moving course of the Democratic nomination battle. As an Obama supporter, I tremble for him as one trembles for the changing fortunes of the hero of an intensely gripping picaresque novel. What does the latest poll say? Has his campaign, usually sure-footed, stumbled into some damaging foolishness? Has another skeleton been uncovered in his closet? Has his vanity got the better of him again, as when he delivered his smirking line, 'You're likeable enough, Hillary'? Are the cloyed gazettes finally tiring of him? This is the principal challenge to training them to use intuition. It becomes almost a Zen art to train a person to "just act natural on purpose." Espionage books, and especially spy books from World War II never seem to go out of fashion and this book by Alan Furst shows us why. Blood of Victory is set in 1940 in the dark heart of Europe.
