Is it Okay to Use an HDTV as a Computer Monitor?

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:28:04 PST

I use a 50" 1080P plasma LG as my main system. I mainly write a few emails and read the usual tech news sites each day. Maybe spend an hour or so on that. I just increase the text size on my browser and it's peaches and cream for me! Other than that, this computer is set up for entertainment, XBMC pretty much has got me covered from there on.

Improve Your Writing by Avoiding These Twenty Common Grammar Mistakes Almost Everyone Makes

Yep. I took a bit of an issue with his inclusion of those. There's a difference between preference and incorrect grammar.

Also, farther isn't strictly limited to distance and further isn't strictly limited to abstract measurements. They've almost always been interchangeable in common use. Hell, they literally share the same definition now.

How to Make Google Music Your Secondary Media Player (and Why You Should)

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:26:58 PST

No worries, I was certain this used to work myself.

Also, I've not seen the "make available offline" option on playlists simply because I've only tried it on the "Thumbs Up" playlist... for which it mysteriously does not have the option.

Google Revamps its Navigation Bar Again, Gets Rid of Annoying Dropdown Menu

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:26:00 PST

Everyone,
Please join in leaving feedback to ALLOW USERS TO CUSTOMIZE THE TOP BAR LINKS.
Google has been ignoring this for YEARS and it's something they should consider more seriously- people want to customize the top bar.
How many of you have ever in your life, clicked the Search link in the top bar? Not a single person I bet. There are useless and redundant links in prominent screen real estate, and Google acts like it's not a problem.

Please leave feedback to address this problem here:
[support.google.com]
And leave a note of your support here, in a thread that they have seemingly been ignoring:
[groups.google.com]

You should not have to have the Chrome browser and/or an Extension, to have the proper customization that ANY site should give to its users.

What Your Doctor Needs to Hear So You Get the Best Possible Care

Can you tell me about the skin care changes your dermatologist recommended? My derm weened me off the prescriptions he had me on and sure enough, my breakouts are back in full force. Obivously different from a recurring skin infection but I'll take what I can get!

Ask and Answer Questions About Exercising

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:25:40 PST

I had a similar situation occur to me last summer. I started lifting weights (intensively) and one day after working out, my shoulder (where the trapezius meets the deltoid) had a pain in it. I thought I was just sore from lifting weights, but the next day it hurt worse. After that, it swelled up and I couldn't move my arm very far - I'm thinking it was definitely a torn/strained muscle.

My recommendation is take it easy for a while. Once the pain goes away, ease back into it. Slowly work up to your push-up goal, and get plenty of rest to allow the muscle to build.

Build a Beautiful Shelving Unit and Desk Out of Pipes

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:25:03 PST

Have you ever analyzed why you think something is ugly or beautiful? Meeting functional requirements in the most minimal way is elegantly beautiful, not ugly. My only objection is the use of non-transparent surface materials. I'd use slabs of acrylic or tempered glass for the shelves and desk surface, and silver or chrome pipes. I think the stuff on the shelves is ugly, but the idea is absolutely brilliant, since minimizing stuff touching the ground is always optimal. Pedestal tables are better than 4 leg tables, for instance.

Is it Okay to Use an HDTV as a Computer Monitor?

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:24:37 PST

A 1080p TV works GREAT as a monitor, but with some caveats. First, if you have a PLASMA TV, you need to be careful! Normal use wont be a problem, but make sure you have a screen saver engaged so when you step away from the PC for a while, you dont etch the phosphors! Most newer plasmas have options to minimize "burn in" or image retention, but you should still limit static images on your screen. An hour or two with a web browser up isnt going to hurt much, but if you are CONSTANTLY on your PC, you may have issues.

Also, if you sit further away from your screen, and have a larger set, you may need to adjust your font size settings to something a bit more readable. No one wants to squint at their screens just to read a label on an icon!

Really, most people are hooking their PCs up to either play games, or to view video...and for these purposes, it works great. If you are going to be using photoshop or doing actual work, you are better off with a dedicated computer monitor...use the HDTV as your secondary display!

The Kingston SSDs used to come with Acronis TrueImage for cloning--you might see if either you can find someone with a Kingston that didn't use it or maybe investigate a trial version. You will have to get something to write the cloned data to/read cloned data from, however.

For me, on weekend days l can't seem to get motivated, I bundle a gym trip with something I know I already want to or need to do (go to the grocery store, etc). Once I am off my butt, out of the house, and in workout clothes, it's a lot easier to drag my butt to the gym.

On weekdays, I truly believe the only way to reliably make it to the gym is to make it part of your daily pre/post work routine. Sucks the first 2-3 weeks, but becomes automatic shortly thereafter.

Obligatory suggestion that you do something completely different than you saved the money for....

I would drop some on a tablet. Android or iOS, whichever. My next expenditure will be at least on ebook reader for my wife since reading on a tablet bothers her. The Vita is around the corner but you don't sound as if you're much of a gamer, so I'd probably stick to buying those few DS games you're interested in and borrowing your sons. Maybe a good set of headphones. I'm not an audiophile, but know I could stand to have a better pair of headphones even in the $20-$30 range. I would also consider an awesome new watch. Not necessarily techie, but it could be.

Google Wallet Security Vulnerability Requires Little Effort to Access Your Wallet

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:20:08 PST

This doesn't even allow them to get the credit card info. You can't see the actual info from inside Wallet. Worst case they would have to make a purchase in person somewhere.

Another plus would be that you can disconnect the card from Google Wallet from anywhere with an internet connection. You don't even have to cancel the card.

With or without the pin I think it's still a better solution to physical plastic.

Most definitions I find say moot means debatable in a purely academic sense. ie You can argue about it all you want but it doesn't matter for practical purposes.

The discussion about the new dress code at the Zoo was moot because the Zoo was being shut down next week anyway.

I still mostly subscribe to the line of thought that language is a means to communicate. As long as the other person is understanding you correctly and efficiently who cares if you have an extra comma or said "whom" instead of "who". One could say it's a moot point. :)

Ask and Answer Questions About Exercising

Fri, 10 Feb 2012 12:19:45 PST

Thought I would share this. The other day I picked up a fit bit (www.fitbit.com) and while it's a little early to to give a good or bad review as this is only my second day with it, so far it seems really cool. It's a small device that you clip to your clothes and it tracks stuff like how many steps you take, how many miles you've walked, and how many calories you've burned.

The coolest part about it is that it wirelessly uploads all this data to their website where you can view all the information with neat charts, and enter your food for the day to also track your calories and set goals to work towards. It even monitors your sleep at night. Also you can like that account with a lot of other similar services like myfitnesspal which will import the information like steps taken over.

Definitely worth checking out for anyone who is into being healthy.

I agree with that ostrich on parade below. Even if your exercise routine is fun, there are going to be times and days were you just don't feel like doing it. Remember that rest and sleep are important components of exercise. I guess the point I'm trying to make is, set goals and do your best to achieve them.

It depends; I had a graphics card that you had to manually connect an audio cable up to in order for it to pass the audio through the HDMI. I think it was the GeForce 260, or perhaps whatever I had before that.
