Sun, 19 Jul 2015 17:00:00 GMT

We haven't had a blood python show on Reptile Radio in a while, and last week's guest Steven Tillis was kind enough to agree to indulge us in one for this episode. However,  as cool and interesting as those girthy mid-sized beauties are, we won't just be talking bloods. So strap in and enjoy, as we find out what environmental ecology students in Florida with a taste for herpetology actually do when they're not studying for a test at school. Trippin' in Togo... with Steven Tillis of RepTillisHerps

Sun, 12 Jul 2015 17:00:00 GMT

At some point in the process, dedicated keepers of non-domestic species are likely to wax contemplatively on the environments from which their charges naturally hail. It's pure human nature to ponder such things; as often, part of the fascination of maintaining an exotic species is intertwined with the desire to know more about something foreign to that which we experience in our customary human-centric routines. For most folks, the itch to escape the pedestrian is scratched in the theaters between their ears. In fact, even the most enthusiastic keepers are satiated enough by the accumulation of information gleaned and disseminated by others to feel confident that they can provide appropriate care for their captives without requiring an expedition of globe-trotting proportions. However, there are still some intrepid souls that just can't be bound by the limits of the internet. Here in this group is where we find Steven Tillis of RepTillisHerps. If you've ever dreamed of being able to go to Africa to pick out your next project animal in person from the wilds of one of the wildest places on earth, then don't miss this show! CK promises Steven will bring a little bit of Togo home to your listening device, and that it will be a bug-bite and sunburn-free experience as well.

Derek Roddy Talks Marquis Animals and the Allure of Having the Best

Tue, 24 Mar 2015 15:00:00 GMT

Herp keepers around the world are enamored by the chance to keep and breed outstanding examples of the species that fascinate them. However, there are times when finding an outstanding example becomes the impetus for keeping the species in the first place. Derek Roddy has a world-class collection of some of the finest Blackhead Pythons in captivity. Here in the US, his name is synonymous with Blackheads of the highest caliber outside of Australia, their native land. Yet lately, Derek has been drawn into the realm of live-bearing Boids as well... a place he hasn't been in many years... captivated by the chance to acquire outstanding examples of both Dumeril's and Brazilian Rainbow Boas. CK finds Mr. Roddy looking for a mate worthy of his amazing Dumeril boa, and with his Brazilians already twisting their tails. Tune in to see what Derek has to say about his hot new passions, and maybe you'll get inspired to find your own perfect specimen out there!

Brian Barczyk hittin' the road for AnimalBytesTV

Tue, 03 Mar 2015 17:00:00 GMT

The worldwide Reptile Community has its share of colorful personalities. Some are content enjoying their beautiful animals and interacting with the rest of us at Herp shows and other Herp related events; still others have a strong online presence, perhaps with a great website and solid participation on the various Herp-related forums here on the web. Some find a nice balance doing both... and then there are those who really bring their game every time they step on the field, even when that field is everywhere they go. The folks that don't just show up to play, but really try to affect positive change for the benefit of everyone that's ever uh... pardon the pun... picked up a ball. Enter Brian Barczyk of: BHB, SnakeBytesTV, and AnimalBytesTV. Brian can't seem to get enough of the creatures of this planet, and is passionate about bringing his passion to others. Michael Freedman of The Florida Reptile Ranch

Sun, 01 Mar 2015 16:30:00 GMT

The reptile trade attracts folks of all sorts to its hallowed halls; drawing the interested and sometimes unsuspecting in with the jewel-like living curiosities that fire our senses to a point where we just can't resist keeping them as treasured possessions. Most 'herpers' start their collections with some of the more pedestrian offerings available, then gradually gravitate toward the more challenging and/or pricier fare. However, occasionally somebody seemingly out of nowhere pulls the trigger for the privelege to begin the process with some of the most coveted offerings the market has to offer. In this episode, CK interviews Michael Freedman of The Florida Reptile Ranch and asks him how he managed to build such a potent collection of Ball Python morphs in such a seemingly short period of time. If you enjoy BP morph talk, listen in and get ready for some juicy chatter.

Sometimes, your mate's 'other' passion can grow on you to a point where you suddenly have something really cool in common besides the burning flame you share for each other. There are lots of folks out there that put the 'mom and pop' in a mom and pop business, but Grant and Mary Hubbard don't just keep the wheels turning at Wreckroom Snakes, they truly enjoy every minute of it. CK catches up with the Hubbards to see how splitting up the workload with well defined tasks that play to their respective strengths helps Grant and Mary get 'er done, and have some fun, all at the same time. Some of you may have attempted to listen to this show on 10/5/2014. That show took place, but was never recorded by blog talk. This episode is the re-do of that ill-fated show. Hope you enjoy.

BT and CK talk breeder loans and other things

Wed, 19 Nov 2014 21:00:00 GMT

Most listeners to our show know that reptile breeder loans can be a dicey topic of discussion depending on whom you ask. My belief is that breeder loans between friends and associates can be mutually beneficial, but require a high tolerance for risk on the part of both parties involved. Clearly, sending a valuable animal across the country in the hopes that a lot of variables will go just right and produce a favorable outcome for both parties is not for the risk averse, or those with a weak constitution! One has to be able to eat some unfortunate news occasionally, and one needs to trust one's counterpart 100%. As it turns out, BT and CK are going to participate in exactly such an endeavor this upcoming season, and, they are going to document the progress right here on the show for our listeners. Good times on the way? Or a recipe for disaster? Time will tell! Tune in and find out how the two-letter-fellas end up when the summer 15 babies finally pip their eggs. First installment begins with this show. Wish us luck!

Here at Reptile Radio we feel really connected with the listeners of our show. Regular fans of our program know that we've been plugging the Bush League Breeders Club annual Spring Scavenger Hunt for years now. As happenstance would have it, this year's Hunt winner is also a huge fan of "The Double R". This is the first year that the BLBC Contest Committee offered an appearance on the show as the crowned jewel of the grand prize package, so having this year's Hunt winner P.J. Kohn on the show is really sweet for everyone involved. CK hosts this episode with the herpin' zookeeper from the great state of Michigan, P.J. Kohn. We'll be talking more than just snakes on this one folks, so tune in and enjoy!

Winston Part 2 - more scaleless ball python talk

Thu, 31 Jul 2014 17:30:00 GMT

Last week's episode left some of our listeners craving more of this interesting topic, and Winston and CK both had more in their respective tanks as well, so the only logical conclusion was to bring Mr. Smith back for more scaleless talk ! Winston brings the eye of an evolutionary biologist to the table with respect to what the Scaleless Head Ball Pythons have going on inside them.

WHS Reptiles' Winston Smith and His Scaleless Head Ball Pythons

Wed, 23 Jul 2014 17:00:00 GMT

Ball Python enthusiasts all seem to dream a similar dream in which they fantasize about their favorite species to keep and breed. Many have confided in me about how thrilled they would be to someday be able to discover a cool new mutation by spontaneously producing one in his or her collections, truly the fabric of fantasy for most of us (as the odds of this actually happening to you aren't very high). Now imagine if someone you knew serendipitously accomplished such a feat, and gave you the opportunity to purchase the project. Would you jump at it? Enter Winston Smith of WHS Reptiles who believed that when such a chance presented itself it needed to be met with immediate action! Reptile Radio Host CK catches up with Mr. Smith to uncover the skinny about this new line of Scaleless Head BP's for the ever hungry ears of double R faithful. Are they the same as the BHB line? Will these incomplete dominant morphs produce the coveted Scaleless Ball in their super form? Winston seems to think so, and his first season of reproducing them makes a strong case for that being a fact. Tune in and find out.

Carpet Pythons with Jason Baylin of East Coast Serpents

Sat, 21 Jun 2014 15:00:00 GMT

So many Carpet python fans out there... and why not? Carpet pythons are beautiful small to mid-sized Australian pythons that are available in many vibrant color and pattern morphs. Though somewhat high strung when young, they generally tame down readily with frequent handling, and become very impressive specimens as adults. This week's guest, Jason Baylin, of East Coast Serpents is a dyed-in-the-wool Carpet fan who also happens to know a thing or two about breeding these beautiful beasts from down under. Join CK for a peek inside Jason's world. You never know... there may be a new carpet in your future !

The All American Garter Snake with Jeff Benfer

Sat, 24 May 2014 16:00:00 GMT

Herp fans around the world love American garter snake morphs, yet for some reason, most American hobbyists don't get juiced up when somone says "garter snake." Maybe the cosmopolitan distribution of this common genus here in The States makes the idea of an exciting garter snake seem so foreign to us jaded keepers living in the land of plenty. Reptile breeder Jeff Benfer is making it real hard for non-believers in the power of Thamnophis to continue to ignore this diverse genus. CK hosts this episode, with returning guest Mr. Benfer, to peek into the morphs that make some of the most beautiful snakes on the North American (or any) continent.

The Noah's Arc Syndrome with Scott Wysocki

Sun, 11 May 2014 13:30:00 GMT

Many Herpers just starting out fall into this trap; the suddenly realize they love all reptiles and want to keep anything and everything they can get their hands on. For many, this can end in disaster, as the myriad species available in the pet trade tend to each have varied and fairly specific requirements for proper care. However some folks just have a knack for being able to pull this off without either the keeper, or the charges suffering in the process. Scott Wysocki is one such individual, and CK has a pretty good idea why he thinks this is so. Tune in and see if you feel the same way... in case you ever find yourself smitten by the multi-species bug !

Cape Fear Constrictors with Josh Harler

Tue, 06 May 2014 18:00:00 GMT

Ever been to a breeder's website to find the virtual cobwebs of years-old prices, and a "last-updated" date that you need to an expired calendar to locate? It's understandable that this can happen, keeping current photos and prices on your website can be daunting when your breeding season is in full-on production. However, just as some folks appreciate the packaging as much as the gift, there are those who feel that a well maintained site speaks highly of the attention to detail one can expect of the breeder maintaining it. Josh Harler stops in to the Reptile Radio studio to talk to CK about the ways he ensures that the image he presents on his Cape Fear Constrictors site is consistent with his "fresher is better'' philosophy. Should be plenty of ball python talk too...

Ozzy II... continued from 4/5, with Houten show report

Sun, 27 Apr 2014 15:00:00 GMT

Most loyal Reptile Radio fans agree, there's something about attending a herp show that's always exciting. Yet though many of us are seasoned veterans when it comes to making the rounds at our favorite local, regional,or national show, few of us by comparison have ventured past our borders to do so. A few weeks ago, Ozzy of Ozzyboids mentioned on air that he would be attending the 4/13 Terraria Houten show in Holland, one of europe's biggest. Since practically everyone loves a good herp show, CK asked Oz if he would report back on the way things are done east of the pond! Never one to refuse an opportunity to share, Ozzy agreed to give us all an inside peek. Since we did get cut off when Oz was last on, we'll be pickin' up some of the things we didn't cover on the 4/5 show as well.

Fri, 18 Apr 2014 16:00:00 GMT

It's something almost every Ball Python officionado dreams of... working with captive hatched stock, and being able to unlock your own cool new mutation. However, something doesn't necessarily need to be entirely new to be coveted by the like-minded souls in your peer group. Such is the case with the Barnhart-line Black Pastel ball python morph. This is not your grandmother's Black Pastel! For Years, Tom Barnhart has been trying to figure out why his line of this popular morph seems to ramp up the aesthetics in so many of the combinations it's been crossed into. Is there something else at play? Or is it just an extreme line of Black Pastel? CK hosts this episode and asks Mr. Barnhart if he's got to the bottom of this quandary yet, and what homework remains to be done if he hasn't.

So you want to be a Herpetologist? with Christopher McHale

Fri, 28 Mar 2014 20:00:00 GMT

So many reptile and amphibian keepers seem to be pre-programmed for the fascination they have with their charges. Most tell stories that from a very young age, they were smitten both with dinosaurs, and the extant terrestrial cold blooded vertebrates that are so reminiscent of them. For some, the fascination grows into obsession, and the pursuit of greater and more detailed information draws them into a formal field of study where the end result is a doctorate in paleontology, or herpetology. Reptile Radio host CK catches up with Christopher McHale, Doctor of Herpetology, to see what would make someone dedicate their life's studies to these fascinating creatures. Who knows? Once the cover is blown off of the nuts and bolts of this endeavor, you may want to become a herpetologist too! ... Would you? Let's find out together.

Greg Graziani and the Leopard Ball Python Project

Sat, 08 Mar 2014 16:00:00 GMT

Since it's first appearance a few years back, the Leopard morph has been continually impressing ball python fans with it's amazing combo capabilities. However, the mystery surrounding it's purported link to the Piebald gene was ever present; and despite the fact that this wasn't necessarily a bad thing, the reptile community as a group, likes to know the whole truth! Returning Reptile Radio guest Greg Graziani has done his homework, and has convincingly ferreted out that truth via multiple breeding trials designed to get to the bottom of this quandary. CK hosts this episode, as Mr. Graziani reveals the real deal about this impressive mutation and whether or not it's permanently liked to the  piebald gene.
