This post just about broke my heart, because I know all about the awfulness of migraines and wouldn't wish them on anybody. (Especially not a cute 7 year old girl!) The description in your post of the related symptoms does sound a lot like some of the more extreme migraines I've had; given my history (which includes a tangle with shunted hydrocephalus), they've landed me in the hospital on occasion and made more than one doc nervous. Here's to hoping that they found a workable, consistent solution for her.

And as for that doctor's "they don't last 48-72 hours" theory, my experience has also proven him (or her) completely wrong. I've had them at times for a week or more. Let's hope that never happens to Ellie. And unfortunately for all the progress they've made, there are still some occasions when it seems nothing short of being almost knocked out by meds will help a migraine. Keep those "gory details" coming. Here's wishing for good news and progress in 2010, and I'd be the first to agree that sometimes a mama does need to push back when the medical community doesn't listen. That's about the only reason I'm alive to write!

Those outsiders don't know what they are missing by not including people into their worlds (mindsets). Your readers, however, are most appreciative of the gory details and your ability to teach through the blog.

So happy to read that Ellie is better and wishing a much less gory 2010.

Whew. Sounds like a lot to deal with...but Ellie is beautiful and from my viewpoint it appears you are doing a spectacular job as her mama.

We tried Periactin for a while with Eden (as an appetite stimulant), and didn't have a good experience. It made her sooooo tired and her tone became extremely floppy...which actually led to more vomiting. It definitely worked to increase her appetite, but the balance wasn't there with the other side effects so we ended up going off and vowing not to try it again.

I know other people who have tried Periactin with fewer negatives, and who have been happy with it, but I thought I'd share our experience!

Good luck. I really hope you find a solution soon so that Ellie is comfortable and thriving.

Hi Kathryn, I'm always amazed by your knowledge and strength and your posts are so beautiful. I just clicked back and read the Outside In post again, lovely. I can relate so much to that. I totally agree about hemp too - my son Luca has so many allergies this is the one thing that has never caused a problem and is a great source of nutrition for him. Hope Ellie recovers quickly and kudos to you for all you have achieved this year.

Best wishes
Eithne

My hubby suffers migraines and they sound VERY similar to what you're describing. I also had a student that suffered from them and it was the same deal. Lethargy, light sensitivity, and vomit. I do hope your chosen medication clears this up completely.

Hi Kristin, I will tell her. We all miss you!! I hope you love your new job. We still have to hang out when things settle down a bit!

Your "tale" is one of beauty and of pain but keep on plugging! I know thought the plot is now thick it will thin into a wonderful future! Tell Ellie I said ,"Hi" (even though I know she is mad at me for disappearing without explaination).
