The other blog I read that has anything to say about mascara swears by Maybelline Full'N'Soft. Maybe it's the second best mascara? https://smalldogsyndrome.com/2017/04/11/my-makeup-arsenal/

Oh, I'm so glad you recommended All-of-a-Kind Family to her! It's such a good one. Thanks for linking to my review of it! We loved reading it last year.

I'm not a big graphic novel reader, but my seven year old is currently obsessed. Except that she primarily only likes a certain type of graphic novel (realistic and thick, e.g. Real Friends, Babysitters Club Graphic Novels, El Deafo, etc.). I am always on the lookout for more of those! Thanks for sharing.

My spouse and I have differing views on the academic thing. She likes better grades. I'm happy if our kid is passing and having fun. But I won't show anyone this book and tell them I'm right!

I do like the reminder to go outside more. My kid LOVES it and it's something that often gets pushed aside with homework. We live in a nice area so even a short break out in the back yard would be great. Thanks!

Oooh, I'm excited to read this one! I love me a good other-country parenting from an American's perspective book. Also, I love bakfiets.

This all sounds right to me. I'm also not as good about getting my daughter outside, despite my own memories of being outside most of the time as a kid...

I find in general that when we read advice that resonates with something that's inside us already, that's when we follow it. Otherwise, it just slips away...

I also did everything that every book I ever read recommended. The only hint that was ever useful was a book that suggested that if it made life easier, I should do it. I got a freezer in the basement because mine wouldn't hold a frozen pizza or more than two loaves of bread and a couple of bags of frozen vegetables. My thought is this: If you're reading the books, you're already doing it right!

I am sooo glad you get to be Primary Music Leader! We love the Children's Songbook so much that I gave it to Lydia's preschool teacher in Kingman. She was Methodist, but she still loved the great music in that book!

Thanks for the update, Alysa! Guessing the late September timing means you won't make it to KidLitCon, but I enjoy seeing you around Facebook. Enjoy BookCon!

As for me, I've had a lot of travel this spring, and am hoping for a relatively quiet summer. that's the plan, anyway.

We love "The Curious Garden," by Peter Brown. I love how the garden in it isn't just alive but has a personality of its own. And the illustrations are beautiful. I am always tickled by Peter Brown's books, like "Creepy Carrots," "The Wild Robot," and "Children Make Terrible Pets."

I started a Kondo style tidy last October, November? Still haven't finished! Got through the bookshelves, but other komono like papers and kraft supplies . . . still not done. It is truly a tough shift from "will I ever need this?" to "does this make me happy" because it does make me happy to have the thing I need already on hand.

Lydia used to ask me what my dream house looks like. I could never answer that, even though my friend Angi and I used to spend hours drawing our dream house and collecting photos of the furnishings from catalogs. Finally, I have figured out that I always wanted a house with a secret - but not a sinister secret.

This series looks very interesting. I like that it is non-fiction in graphic novel format. I bet Abe would really enjoy it because he likes history a lot.

Depends on what you like. I read everything from a few historical cozies through various police procedurals to thrillers. I especially favor the Maisie Dobbs series by Jacqueline Winspear, the Chief Inspector Gamache series by Louise Penny, and the Joe Pickett series by CJ Box.

2017-01-29T23:03:59.290-08:00

My kids love audiobooks! We have a CD player (I know, we're old school) and they usually have 2-3 books on CD checked out from the library. I haven't gotten into them as much for myself, but I want to listen to more.
I have to echo your thoughts about getting through sickness with them, though. In December I had morning sickness that lasted all day and just couldn't bring myself to read a book. Then at night I would be so tired that even holding my phone and reading in bed seemed like too much effort. So I listened to audiobooks (in bed, in the dark) until I started dozing off each night. It was just what I needed at the time.

One thing holding me back is the time commitment. I can get through the books so much faster when I just read them to myself. The two novels I listened to in December were 12 hours and 9 hours long. That's a big chunk of time!

Hope you are all feeling better soon!

2017-01-29T13:38:55.668-08:00

Our whole family was leveled by a stomach bug one weekend not too long ago. All six of us were throwing up and feeling horrible for two days straight. It was BAD. I spent the night on the bathroom floor listening to an audio book by my favorite author, Georgette Heyer. It certainly helped pass the torturous, long hours.

Yikes! Not a weekend I hope to ever relive!

In healthier, more cheerful times, I do listen to audiobooks a lot. :) Our library is connected to Hoopla, so I can check out a great variety of audiobooks for free on my iPad. I love listening while cooking dinner and doing dishes. Sometimes I start scrubbing cupboard doors and mopping just so I can keep listening too. :) We just started listening to Little House in the Big Woods on CD (from the library) in the car. The kids are totally engrossed by it. We grab the next Harry Potter from the library whenever there's an extra-long drive ahead of us. Audiobooks are so great!

Thanks, Jen! I hope so, too. My brother-in-law listened to the whole Wheel of Time series while commuting, and if you want to talk about the length of a book, those are beastly long! What adult mysteries do you recommend?

I LOVE audiobooks. I've been a member of Audible for... at least 10 years. I listen when I'm exercising, driving (my myself, anyway), folding laundry, cooking, etc... I've only recently introduced audiobooks to my daughter. But luckily I have a ton of good ones stored away on my Audible account from my own years of listening. These days I mostly listen to adult mysteries, because those are longer than kids' books, and a better value for my Audible credits. Hope your family is all well soon!
