Pittsburgh Public Theater's new artistic director, Marya Sea Kaminski

Mon, 11 Dec 2017 16:19:00 -0500

(image) Maybe it’s too early to ask Marya Sea Kaminski what kind of artistic director she’ll be at Pittsburgh Public Theater. After all, Kaminski, currently associate artistic director at Seattle Repertory Theatre, was just hired here last week, and she won’t move to Pittsburgh until next summer.

But Kaminski is young (40) and new to town, and her resume has a little edge to it — including Seattle Rep’s spectacular recent community-centered staging of The Odyssey (more on which later).…

Fri, 08 Dec 2017 17:36:00 -0500

(image) Earlier today, Ryan Briggs became one of the first Pennsylvanians to be certified as part of the state’s new medical marijuana program. Together with his mother Diana Briggs, he and other members of his family travelled from Westmoreland County to the Compassionate Certification office in Downtown Pittsburgh where Ryan Briggs received his certification this morning.

“We started our journey four years ago with Ryan and when we started the journey, Ryan was seeing 400 seizures today,” Diana Briggs said at the event.…

State rep. candidate Emily Skopov wants Daryl Metcalfe out of committee chair seat

Fri, 08 Dec 2017 14:07:00 -0500

(image) On Dec. 5, a video of Pennsylvania state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Cranberry) exclaiming he is a “heterosexual” when a Democratic colleague touched his arm went viral. It spread so far and wide, that on Dec. 7 it was featured on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

And while Metcalfe’s blatant homophobia is undoubtedly humorous to most Americans, some people involved in Pennsylvania state politics are taking it seriously.…

Pittsburgh City Paper exclusive: state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe does touch other men

Fri, 08 Dec 2017 13:31:49 -0500

(image) Local moron and Mega-Super-Ultra-Right-Wing state Rep. Daryl Metcalfe (R-Cranberry) got to show off his special brand of crazy to the world this week when he scolded a Democratic colleague for touching his arm gently during a Dec. 5 committee meeting on land-use policy.

“Look, I'm a heterosexual. I have a wife, I love my wife, I don't like men — as you might.…

Final weekend for "The Humans" at the Public

Fri, 08 Dec 2017 10:00:00 -0500

(image) Stephen Karam's comedic family drama is built around a Thanksgiving dinner that feels ripped from this past November.

The parents and grandmother, from Scranton, are visiting the youngest daughter and her boyfriend in their Manhattan apartment, joined by the older daughter, who lives in Philly. There's Catholicism, regret, ribbing, "I love you, but I'm just saying," dementia, overlapping dialogue, and lots of bathroom breaks.

The acting is terrific in this local premiere at Pittsburgh Public Theater, and director Pamela Berlin orchestrates the action on the bi-level set beautifully, leaving room for tender human moments that are all the more moving for their brevity.…

"In Defense of Gravity" at Attack Theatre

Fri, 08 Dec 2017 09:32:00 -0500

(image) Attack Theatre’s latest show was inspired by the writings of Jimmy Cvetic. But this wasn’t exactly the Cvetic those familiar with his work might think of.

Thu, 07 Dec 2017 12:40:00 -0500

KDKA journalist Marty Griffin tweets meme making light of sexual misconduct

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 18:11:00 -0500

(image) KDKA television and radio personality Marty Griffin posted a tweet on social media Wednesday morning that appears to make light of sexual assault and harassment. The post comes in the midst of almost daily reports about men in positions of power sexually assaulting and harassing women.

At 10:15 a.m. on Dec. 6, Griffin tweeted from his account a meme of a toy elf recording four Barbie dolls sitting in a sink filled with bubbles with “elf on the shelf being investigated for sexual misconduct.” Griffin wrote on the tweet “Where does it end?”

Four people replied on Twitter and two of them didn't appreciate the post.…

Pa. Gov. Tom Wolf says Rep. Daryl Metcalfe’s committee seat should be re-examined in light of homophobic comments

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 16:33:00 -0500

(image)
A Dec. 5 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette headline was one for the ages: “State Rep. Daryl Metcalfe comes out as heterosexual.” The P-G story was about Metcalfe (R-Cranberry) freaking out when state Rep. Matt Bradford (D-Montgomery) briefly touched his arm during a committee meeting about land-use policies.

“Representative Bradford, look, I am heterosexual,” said Metcalfe after Bradford tapped his arm.…

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) Pittsburgh’s Omentum Records gives Brokaw’s Canaris new life Chris Brokaw originally released Canaris as a CD on his own Capitan Records in 2008. Among the six tracks of solo acoustic guitar music, the title track offers more than 17 minutes of controlled feedback, created by amplifying the instrument and manipulating it in a manner that transforms a primitive howl into an arresting tone poem.…

Off With Their Heads performs at Howlers Sun., Dec. 10

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) “It can get really heavy, but that’s life.” Off With Their Heads makes music that is honest and raw. The Minneapolis-based band’s high-octane punk has catchy riffs and gritting vocals that rip open old wounds, while sharing stories of constant battles in self-improvement and survival. …

Black Marble performs at Spirit, Wed., Dec. 13

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) “There was a real handmade quality to it. That appealed to me.” In coverage of Black Marble’s second full-length record — It’s Immaterial, released last October — much was made of founder Chris Stewart’s move from Brooklyn to Los Angeles. More than a geographical shift, the move would also bring a shift in Stewart’s attention.…

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) Two ends of the jazz improvisation spectrum roll through Pittsburgh Despite everything else that’s happened this year, 2017 was a good year for seeing national jazz acts in Pittsburgh. At loft-style spaces and mid-level theaters all the way up to museum auditoriums, a healthy dose of improvised music came to town this year.…

Bill Nye: Science Guy

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) The former TV educator still wants folks to care about science On first thought, it would seem to be simple for a guy nicknamed “Science Guy” to make a mid-life transition from TV personality to accepted scientific expert. But Bill Nye: Science Guy, a new profile directed by David Alvarado and Jason Sussberg, says: Not so fast.…

The Disaster Artist

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) James Franco’s film affectionately recounts how the cult movie The Room was made After its release in 2003, Tommy Wiseau’s film The Room, was heralded by some as “the worst film ever made.” Assigning a definitive ranking in this category would take years, but let’s just stipulate that The Room is on the list. It has since become a cult classic beloved for its awfulness; it is also that rare film in an era of home viewing that is a cult theatrical experience, playing for repeat audiences who have developed a shared experience of responding to the film’s many unintentionally funny scenes, i.e., hollering “Focus!” and throwing plastic spoons.…

Point Park’s Winter Dance Concert

Wed, 06 Dec 2017 04:00:00 -0500

(image) The program includes one of the season’s very best productions As in 2016, with Alexandra Damiani’s “Portrait De Femmes,” Point Park University’s Conservatory Dance Company ends this year with one of the season’s very best works, Adam Hougland’s “Cold Virtues.” Part of the company’s stylistically varied Winter Dance Concert at Pittsburgh Playhouse, Hougland’s signature ballet, created in 2003 for Louisville Ballet, was the type of inspired genius that makes a choreographer’s name. Likened to Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ Les Liaisons dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), the ballet, set in a Depression-era speakeasy layered in stage fog, felt like a dream sequence from a Gene Kelly movie.…
