Fight The New Drug...

Tue, 24 Apr 2012 17:00:00 GMT

During the Victorian era movement, in the 1850s, England passed the first laws against por.nog.raphy. The laws did not stop the prolific spread of por.nog.raphy and may have actually increased demand. In the 1970's and 1980's, the extreme feminists took up the banner of the anti-po.rn movement. Their approach was bellicose and divisive and focused on passing laws that were eventually found to be unconstitutional. Learning from the past, Fight the New Drug takes a non-legislative, non-judgmental approach. We recognize an individual's right to view and produce por.nog.raphy, however, once they are educated on the harmful effects of por.nog.raphy we believe they will choose to avoid it. We only wish to educate about the negative effects of por.nog.raphy on individuals, families, and businesses. In our research, we've found that many people, especially Americans, automatically assume that the anti-por.nog.raphy movement is at odds with First Amendment freedoms. Under that perception, people are asked to weigh the importance of free speech against the damaging effects of por.nog.raphy. Fight the New Drug rejects this perception and we will position ourselves as anti-po.rn, pro-free speech. Fight the New Drug's message is based on science and facts. In a sense, science is an international currency. We explain why po.rn is harmful by educating people about the negative psychological and physical reactions it causes. We do not affiliate ourselves with any religious groups or political agendas. This movement is the result of many years spent developing ideas and researching the effects of por.nog.raphy. Taking a fresh approach to the issue, we're a non-profit organization dedicated to help the young generation educate itself with the facts on por.nog.raphy. We hope you will join us in this fight.

Buzzy Martin Privatization Of Prisons Who's Investing In CCA

Tue, 17 Apr 2012 17:00:00 GMT

Buzzy Martin Privatization Of Prisons Who's Investing In Them and who is CCA, after writing his book... Buzzy has become an advocate for everyone in the wrong side of the prison system and what it means to parents and their children! PRIVATE PRISONS ARE BACK... Outlawed at the beginning of the 20th Century, private corporations are once again owning and operating prisons for profit. A controversial issue which dates back to the days that followed the Emancipation Proclamation, CORRECTIONS examines its re-appearance today amidst globalization and the most awesome growth of prisons in all of modern history, painting a complex portrait of what many are calling the "prison industrial complex." THE PRIVATE PRISON In the mid-1980's, fifteen years of massive and unprecedented growth within the US prison system hit a snag -- it ran out of money. When the state wants to build a new prison, it traditionally asks the voters to approve the cost through a bond issue. But this time, voters throughout the country began to say no. So many turned to private investment, to venture capital, both to fund new prison projects and to run the prisons themselves for costs around $30 to $60 per bed, per day. This began what we know today as the for-profit, PRIVATE PRISON INDUSTRY. THE PRISON BOOM PRODUCES PRISON PRIVATIZATION 1970 : 280,000 prisoners | 2000 : 2,000,000 prisoners. More about Buzzy Martin

Facing Terminal Illness - Blending Science and Spirituality

For decades Stephen Iacoboni, MD, carried John Donne’s words with him, “No man is an island …every man’s death diminishes me…therefore, do not send to know…for whom the bell tolls…it tolls for me.” Every patient’s death begged questions.   Cancer moves more slowly today, thanks to modern science. But science provides scant solace when it fails, slowly, to save our physical forms…and religious faith too often proves fragile during a long mortal watch.   Stephen J. Icaboni, MD, served his fellowship in medical oncology at the prestigious MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston where he received the outstanding researcher award and was honored to present his research findings at the American Society of Clinical Oncology.   In 1989 Dr. Icaboni co-founded St. Mary’s Regional Cancer Center in Walla Walla Washington, where he lived and practiced for 16 years. He accepted the position of Medical Director at the Kootenai Cancer Center in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho in 2001, and in 2010 returned to Washington to co-direct the Kennewick General Hospital Hematology-Oncology program.   “The Undying Soul - A Cancer Doctor’s Discovery” is a powerful journey enabling doctor and patient to walk the hard road from the failure of science to the triumph of spirit. Sedgrid Lewis, Cyberbully App

Tue, 25 Oct 2011 17:00:00 GMT

The CHWR team welcomes to the show Sedgrid Lewis, Cyberbully App, so call in early to get your questions asked and answered.   Bully Block Top 6 Smartphone Security App for Children... The controversy over smartphones for children continues to escalate. Some argue that it may be actually educational for the children, while others maintain that it’s simply a useless distraction. However, children are gaining more and more exposure to smartphone technology.   A survey conducted by the Joan Ganz Cooney Center and detailed in The Wall Street Journal reports that most parents “allowed their kids to use a smartphone at least occasionally.” Moreover, “About two-thirds of the children said they have used an iPhone before, and almost two thirds said it was “easy” or “very easy” to use.”   In a study done in February 2010 by the Cyberbullying Research Center, over 4000 students were randomly surveyed ages 10-18 from 37 different schools. Many stats from this study stood out to me (you can read the entire article by True Care Awareness Online here), but the most significant one in my opinion is the fact that 20% of the students have been cyber-bullied in their lifetimes. Astoundingly, 17% of them have been cyber-bullied within the last 30 days!   As a high school counselor at my day job I have seen firsthand the prevalence and impact cell phones have in schools. Rumors, threats, harassment, and teasing are all very common in the school setting via cell phone; students no longer have to physically be present to harass someone.   Find more info here:

Facing the Fear and Costs of Retirement With John Graves

Thu, 20 Oct 2011 17:00:00 GMT

CHWR welcomes John Graves, CLU, CHFC, Registered Investment Advisor, to the show today... A recent survey suggested that retiring Americans are more afraid of running out of money than of death. The economy has affected millions who now must keep working years after they planned to retire. Retirement fears have spread to businesses large and small. Many are underfunded for their retirement obligations, others can’t afford plans and feel they can’t retain or attract good employees. John Graves, CLU, CHFC, manager of some $400 million in assets, and editor of The Retirement Journal. While the headlines are filled with the tribulations of major corporations, the heartbeat of America is also powered by employees and by small business. Every one of them from mom & pop shops to small companies with a few dozen employees have to face the fact that those granted the gift of aging will someday not be willing or able to work. We politely call that retirement. Once addressed with a gold watch, a fishing rod, and social security, both small business employees and employers are sweating the upcoming bill. John Graves, CLU, CHFC has some solution for both businesses and individuals. Working with the basics of time, objective information and common sense “The 7% Solution” (January 2012) may solve your problems. See also> Talking Points: Is there really a retirement crisis? How much do economic downturns affect retirement plans? How do these factors differ for Mom & Pops, medium size companies, and big business?. Is it realistic to think the problems will or can be fixed? What can individuals and business owners do to be proactive?

Mike Lurey Is A Parent, Journalist, Baseball Fan and Author.

Tue, 30 Aug 2011 17:00:00 GMT

The great American pastime is so entrenched in our culture that its verbiage is part of the language of many who have never seen a ballgame. Its historical achievers like Jackie Robinson are pillars of social accomplishment. Most of us understand the concept of “3 strikes”, “home run” and “the ball game is over” in any context. But baseball is also a tool for building the bonds that last beyond a lifetime.   Mike Luery is an award-winning journalist with 25 years on TV and radio. Currently, he is the political and investigative reporter for CBS 13 in Sacramento where his “On The Money” reports provide an in depth look at the connection between money and politics. As a television reporter in Florida, Luery’s five-part series on the Ku Klux Klan earned an Outstanding Achievement Award for Investigative Reporting from UPI.   Baseball Between Us is the true story of a father-son road trip to visit every Major League Baseball stadium: 16 years, 32 ballparks and 43,000 miles together.   Part memoir, part travel journal, part father-son coming of age odyssey, author Mike Luery and his son, Matt, engage us in their debates over music, life, food and bedtime as they share the common bond of baseball.  See also:   Talking Points: • 43,000 miles of “whose music”? No Room for Vengeance with Victoria Ruvolo & Robert Goldman

Tue, 09 Aug 2011 17:00:00 GMT

Resilience, Not Vengeance! Separating Social and Statutory Justice   Join Dave and Bill for this inspiring interview today, call in to get your questions answered or share your comments!   The story of Victoria Ruvolo's resilience has been making news since some kids out on a night of joyriding in November 2004 threw a frozen turkey out of their car and it went through Victoria's windshield, destroying both the windshield and her face and leaving her near death as they drove away.   Doctors predicted that if she did live, she would never be fully functional again - she would need a caretaker. The District Attorney on Long Island, where the event occurred, wanted the maximum prison term for the teen who had actually tossed the turkey - between 25 and 40 years.   Vicky is the personification of resilience. She survived, she healed, she convinced the DA and the judge that 6 months in jail, five years probation, and one year of community service would probably produce a far better result for society than turning a stupid kid into a hardened criminal. And she went on to work alongside her attacker, Ryan Cushing, in the Suffolk County TASTE program for at-risk kids. And instead on one year community service, Ryan did three at Victoria's side where they inspired other kids to pick up where he left off talking to kids about the decisions they make....

(risk that tween/teen will be pressured into more intimacy than they are ready for, risk of forwarding, posting it to others, social damage, future (college admin looking at Facebook etc))  3. Why is it good? - why do tween/teens do it? A way of experimenting with a very interesting topic that they believe is much safer than actual intimacy - they may be right!  4. What can parents do? a. privacy is not a right, it's a privilege. Look at their phone/email/IM etc b. ASK about it - and listen to the answers you get c. Keep it an open, ongoing conversation. Listen more than you talk. d. find ways to talk about this that don't involve your tween/teen directly - watch TV with them or listen to music with them, you will get plenty of opportunities to talk about sexting. e. be slow to judge, and firm with your own convictions. Teens don't have to agree with you to hear you.

Fifty-one percent of those polled stated that they relied on a combination of all three layers, 22 percent did not use technology but did rely on employees to adhere to policies, and only 12 percent relied solely on employees’ “good judgment” for defense. Sure enough, sexually explicit pictures changed hands, and my client is holding the hot potato.  The law is trying to catch up with sexting and in some cases people are finding themselves being sent what constitutes child por.nog.raphy. As this is primarily a teenager/young adult problem police departments are running into a unique problem with their recruits. Recruits are having problems with the lie detector tests and background investigations, as both males and females recruits are confronted with the fact that their youthful fun time with cell phones may be a violation of law.   Special notes: The reason Joe Gutheinz brought up moon rocks, is that he was contacted by a newspaper in the nation of Cyprus. A scandal involving the Cyprus Goodwill Moon Rock, worth 5 million dollars, is about to break. Short story long. In 1973 and 1974 when the Nixon Administration sent over an Apollo Goodwill Moon Rock to be presented to Cyprus that country was in the midst of riots and terrorist attacks, which left our Ambassador to that country dead. An American kept the Cyprus Goodwill Moon Rock, which both countries believed had been given to Cyprus and either lost or destroyed. In 2003, the person who had it became known to United States but we did not notify Cyprus. Early last year that Moon Rock was recovered by NASA OIG, my former agency...   Sexting: Consequences & The Law with Joe Gutheinz

Ask SHAWN MARIE EDGINGTON. As America's cyberbullying prevention expert, Edgington's mission is to protect children from cyberbullies and sexting.   "Sexting is an increasingly popular practice that puts teens at risk. John Duffy The Author Of The Available Parent, Talks Teens

Tue, 31 May 2011 17:00:00 GMT

Join Dave and Bill today in The CyberHood as we share an hour with Dr. John Duffy talking about teens, relationships, awareness & communication and especially consequences!   Parents of tweens and teens know all too well that adolescents often feel unheard and misunderstood—and if they don’t, they’ll know soon enough. Parents can feel bewildered by the changes in their children and their sudden lack of effectiveness as parents, and some parents today have a tendency to over-parent, micro-manage, and under-appreciate their teens.   The parent becomes unavailable, and the teen responds in kind, and a negative communication cycle has begun. Dr. John Duffy suggests parents work on being available parents to their teens, and that means more than simply being available for a hug; in fact, it’s possible for someone to be physically next to another person and still be unavailable. Duffy suggests that the “available parent” is a parent who is open to discussion, offering advice, and problem solving, but not insistent.   Children are allowed to make some mistakes, and set some of their own limits. An available parent is a guide who is there for his/her children, and approaches the relationship with an attitude of optimism, not fear.   The Available Parent: Handling Difficult Situations, When Teens Have To Face Their Consequences

Maiffret & eEye Provide Tips to Help Protect Against Attacks

Thu, 05 May 2011 17:00:00 GMT

CTO Marc Maiffret joins Dave and Bill again in The CyberHood today to talk about new research and techonogly...   eEye is back in the research game. Since returning to the company last July, CTO Marc Maiffret (renowned Microsoft vulnerability expert) will release on May 5 a research report demonstrating how vulnerabilities, including Zero Days, can be mitigated without patches. In the report, Marc lays out several free and easy-to-perform tweaks that would will render most attacks futile.   For example, Aurora used an Internet Explorer vulnerability to gain a foot hold. However simply having a properly configured proxy server would have prevented any information from being stolen as the Aurora virus wasn’t proxy aware. Stuxnet could have been neutralized by upgrading to Windows 7 and implementing Access Control Lists.   In addition to demonstrating how to easily defend against attacks, the research also provides some startling statistics:   • Disabling WebDAV, WebClient Services and MS Office Converters would have prevented approximately 12% of all vulnerabilities patched by MS in 2010 from being easily exploited • Upgrading to latest Microsoft Software could have allowed organizations to be unsusceptible to more than 50% of all MS software vulnerabilities in 2010 • Disabling features and subsystems not being used can negate at least 12% of vulnerabilities by reducing the number of attack vectors

Should Law Enforcement Use Technology To Better Prevent Sexual Abuse Or Is It A Lost Cause?

Join us today as we welcome back to the CHWR show Robin Sax, were are so excited to talk about Growing Up Digital, Should Laws and Law Enforcement Grow Up & Use Technology To Better Prevent Sexual Abuse Or Is It A Lost Cause?   Also, we will talking about current projects Robin is doing right now and her past 2 best selling books, and the overall message of sexual exploitation and abuse against our children, growing up digital and in the offline world as well...   In this informative but uneven examination of sex crimes against children, former L.A. County Dep. DA Sax traces the prosecution of this social epidemic from identifying the perpetrator to securing a conviction. The statistics Sax presents are sobering: for instance, 67% of reported sexual assault victims are children.   Is there something that can be done to use tools that are available such as RFID, GPS, Video, Leg Monitors etc to track and make sure that sexual predators are not breaking rules or victimizing.   A great deal of money is spent on prosecuting the offenders but is there a way to spend more money on preventing more of these crimes? Are there effective ways to not take money away from prosecutors but more to help in the prevention.   For more info: Robin Sax

Growing Up Digital With Melissa Clark-Reynolds, the MiniMonos CEO

Tue, 15 Mar 2011 17:00:00 GMT

Melissa Clark-Reynolds, the MiniMonos CEO, will be discussing kids behavior online and how they are balancing tech skills and life skills. We are a virtual world for kids who love to play and love the planet, with 80,000 registered members worldwide.   Every day, we see kids be kind, generous, thoughtful, creative and caring. We also see negative behavior, of course, but weve been consistently gratified and amazed by the overwhelming positivity of our community.   For us, the balance between spending time on the computer and time outdoors is vital; its impossible for kids to have an appreciation for the environment if they dont spend any time in it!   MELISSA CLARK-REYNOLDS Melissa is a third-generation single mother whose environmental crusade is fuelled by a desire to protect her family. The link between climate change and her family’s quality of life hit home for Melissa while on a snorkelling trip in Hawaii with her youngest daughter Grace. While encouraging Grace to overcome her fear of putting her face underwater so she could see turtles, Melissa wondered how much longer those turtles could withstand ocean temperature changes.   She was terrified by the thought that one day Grace would have to tell her children, “There used to be turtles.” Melissa was moved to action. She ‘stalked’ Al Gore in order to be personally trained by him in climate change presentation delivery. She has put this training to good use; delivering more than 20 presentations since October 2007, far more than what was required of her. Al Gore chose the right woman for the job of provoking change – she’s engaging, she’s tough, and she’s wise.   Melissa has a rare ability to get people to overcome ‘climate change apathy’ and act to preserve our environment. She is adept at motivating others to step out of their comfort zones. Those who have heard Melissa speak say she “puts a very human perspective on issues”

Yalda T. Uhls, Parenting In The Digital Age

Wed, 02 Mar 2011 17:30:00 GMT

Dave and Bill interview Yalda T. Uhls, Parenting In The Digital Age she will stop by The HOOD today to share her thoughts on and especially advice to all The CyberHood listeners and followers!   Yalda T. Uhls, Masters in Developmental Psychology from UCLA, M.B.A.   She is a developmental psychology student, getting a PhD at UCLA, while also conducting research with the Children’s Digital Media Center @LA. It’s the perfect blend of the old (see below) and the new, She did research technology and media, She then learned how it affects children and shared this knowledge with others. There is so much fascinating research out there, She is excited to have the opportunity to share it with other people. OK, at times my kids are my science experiments, but hey, it’s for the good of society.   She was a media starved childhood in which she felt left out in the cold as friends discussed the latest TV or movies, she made up for lost time by going into a career that required watching TV, films and reading scripts 24/7. She climbed the ladder starting at Sony, moving on to New Line, then to Artisan and finally ending up as a Senior VP at MGM. Along the way, She schmoozed, had power lunches, attended Sundance and Cannes more times that she care to admit, and made some movies she is proud of (and many more that she is not so willing to admit to).   When she had kids she vowed two things: one, never to read another script on Sundays and two, to find a career that offered the potential to impact the lives of families in a positive way. Becoming a psychologist studying this new digital age offers me these opportunities and so much more. This blog reflects my ideas and opinions of the research and not those of anyone else.

Balancing Tech Skills with Life Skills With Lisa Shaw, SpectorSoft

Thu, 24 Feb 2011 18:00:00 GMT

Join Dave and Bill as they talk about and learn, Balancing Tech Skills with Life Skills With Lisa Shaw, of SpectorSoft   Lisa Shaw of SpectorSoft, the lifeline for thousands of parents in protecting their kids from the growing risk of cyberbullying and online dangers.   Shaw has been in the industry for 11 years.   She can detail how balancing tech skills with life skills starts with increased parental involvement, in minimizing these online threats. (Which is not an easy thing: As computers, smartphones, or iPads open the gates to a new universe of information, they also expose children to countless online threats, such as encounter illicit material, strangers or cyberbullying.   New tips for parents to create a safer online experience include:   1 – Keep communication open. Discuss cyberbullying with them and make it understood they can come to you to discuss anything. Many times children are afraid that they’ll lose privileges or experience other negative repercussions, if they do.   2 – Educate them what to do should it happen to them. Stress that they should ignore the bully and they must let an adult know.   3 – Set rules about the amount of time they can use the computer and Internet and use filters, timers and other safety measures to keep their exposure minimized.   4 – Know the danger signs. Many children may be prone to depression or low self-esteem, and are prime targets for cyberbullying. Keep an eye out for signs of withdrawal, such as cutting off their friends and losing interest in daily activities. Also watch for changes in the time they spend online and how it affects them.

The Hidden Story of America's Prostituted Children and the Battle to Save Them, by Julian Sher

Wed, 12 Jan 2011 18:00:00 GMT

Julian Sher joins Dave and Bill today to talk about his new book "Somebody's Daughter: The Hidden Story of America's Prostituted Children and The Battle to Save Them"! These situations can occur out of a simple stupid argument with parents, distanced relationships, poor adult role models, runaways, or leading the clubbing or partying scene, etc... One wrong choice and their lives can be ruined forever by predators who are anxious to use them for prostitution and human trafficking!   They are America's forgotten children: the hundreds of thousands of child prostitutes who walk the "tracks" -- the Las Vegas Strip, the casinos of Atlantic City, the truck stops on interstates and the street corners of our cities. Most people wrongly believe sex trafficking involves young women from foreign lands but the vast majority of teens caught in the sex trade are American girls -- the runaways and the throwaways few people care about. They become victims of ruthless pimps whose lifestyle is often glorified in the media and in the rap music scene.   From the streets of Dallas where the police have set up a pioneering High Risk Victims Unit to the glittering casinos of Las Vegas and Atlantic City where the FBI's "Innocence Lost" investigators try to dismantle major pimping criminal enterprises, Somebody's Daughter takes you behind the scenes to expose one of America's mo[...]
