Personally I don't think treating video and "paper" essays as equals is wise becasue the production of each uses different skills. While paper essays can be monotonous, they help the student develop researching and writing skills that are necessary for their education. On the other hand, a video essay allows the student to be more creative with the content. Also, a video essay can entertaining while delivering meaningful content. I guess I could say that a good video essay contains elements that informs, but also entertains without going overboard. A combination of full motion video, still photos with a voice over narration and possibly music are fair game, but all of these elements are not mandatory. The elements of the essay are merely tools. It's the execuition that makes the project work or not.

A good video essay takes the important information you want to relay to your audience and creates an easy to understand format through visuals, sound, and moving picture. It highlights the main points and elaborates only on what is necessary. This leaves the audience with a broken-down, easy to understand explanation of the topic at hand. Academic video essays are different from a corny video skit because they aren't meant necessarily to be creative, funny, or interpretations of things. They are filled with generally credible information that can be referenced for educational purposes.

I think a good video essay should be informative yet creative. I think it is an excellent alternative to the typical academic essay. It is hands on and allows you to access a different part of your brain and expand on your creative side while still informing the audience by using the standard essay format, such as; strucute, thesis, content ect. As long as the components are clear enough for the intended audience to understand, i believe a video essay is an excellent opportunity for those students who don't excell in writing. Given that we are digital natives, formating and editing a video essay would be easily accomplished by all.

I really like the idea of the academic video. It allows for a new form of creativity in the classroom that is different than the traditional academic paper. Making a video is more hands-on than just typing up a paper; the student can add effects and music to help express the point trying to be made (as the students who created the "What is Academic Video" essay did). There are students who are just not natural writers, but may be natural at putting together a video that expresses their argument. However, a video essay needs to be an essay, and not just a fun video that only briefly touches on the point trying to be made. I am all for using effects and writing a creative script (in fact I love using iMovie), but it cannot be all effects to mask the fact that there is really no point to the video.

I think an academic video essay should still inform the viewer in the way a traditional essay would, but it should also entertain them. Where a teacher might read 20-30 essays on the same subject and get bored, watching 20-30 video essays would not do the same because it allows the students to be creative and put a personal spin on what they've learned. I also this it allows the student to want to do the essay more. We all put off writing a traditional essay because it's so dull that it is almost painful, but playing around with video, sound, text, images, etc is almost fun even when for class purposes.

I think an academic video is an intriguing way to generate some type of emotional response from your audience. Unlike a typical structured five paragraph essay, an academic video allows for a more creative way to get your point across to a certain audience. In a video you can appeal to your audience in a collaborative use of sound, visuals, and text that is often a better way to keep the attention of your audience. I think in a video essay you don't necessarily have to have such a cut clear focus, but your main goal is to try and generate some sort of reaction from your audience.

A good academic video engages the audience. It is a good mixture of all the things mentioned in the video. If it were just a talking head, it would be boring. If it were just a voice over with pictures, it would also be boring. Having a variety of ways to get the information across keeps things interesting, and the audience stays entertained and focused. This being said, it is also important that each aspect works well together. If the video looks scattered, it may be too confusing, or too annoying for the audience to watch.

(So, I feel like this is an appropriate class to mention that a "digital native's" life, both personally and academically, is in shambles if the internet barely works. I've spent an hour trying to load this video, and it's still not done...) Anyway -- a video essay shouldn't have too much packed in so that the viewer becomes confused, but enough to get the point across and also remain interesting. I like when there's creativity and when things visually catch my attention. It can't be all words, but there has to be something there so I understand what is going on. It's like a balancing act of images, music, and words. This video did that well, by blending talking people with words, music, and images. The video needs to look professional and like someone spent a lot of time putting it together. I like that in the video there were so many different images, but most of it still made sense because there was a common thread of words and ideas running through the video.

I think an academic video essay is a way to enhance your presentation of material. You can mesh everything together like sound, text, audio pictures or you can just let the actions in the video speak for itself. Like the video said, there has not been much discussion or attempts at video essays so it is entirely up to interpretation. It just seems that the video essay needs to maintain some focus or goal so that the viewer can connect with it.
