Julie, are you going to build an attached enclosure for them, or are you going to let them free-range? If you build an enclosure, make sure you bury your chicken wire 6 inches (and I recommend using the square kind) - we didn't the first time around, and we would be missing chickens some mornings! Also, make sure they have perches/ledges a few feet off the ground - this also helps keep them safe from predators!

Hi Julie, how have you been? I haven't been blogging much, but wanted to come by and see what you are up to.
We've had our chickens about a year and a half and are going to buy some more chicks soon. The more you pick them up, the tamer they seem to be. Our chickens are pets now, they follow me all over our property when I go outside. Eat out of my hand too. They are really funny to watch.

Hi Julie

I haven't had much time on the computer lately so it's been fun this afternoon catching up with you. Loved your family photos...really nice. So sorry about your little lamb Easter. Raising chickens? My daughter in law did that and still loves having fresh eggs every morning.

Visit me when you can.

Hugs!
Kat

Guinea fowl are better for ticks; but chickens are good for taking time out of your day and just enjoying their silliness and poking around. Make sure you rodent-proof underground and underneath the house. Rats are NOT as charming as Templeton would have you believe. Keep your feed in metal trash cans and weight the lids also. Best of all enjoy all those eggs you will be finding!!

Everybody I know that has chickens just loves them. They are, in addition to producing eggs, very interesting to watch, and to listen to. Have fun with them, and, post lots of pictures.
