There was never a caboose there when I worked there in 1984-1985 while in HS. I started as a dish washer and got bumped up to prep cook. My BBQ ribs even got a mention in Cincinnati Magazine, of course Montgomery Inn was king. The ribs I made for the restaurant weren't even cooked over a fire, just in a typical kitchen oven.

I do remember one weekend when NHRA was in to at Edgewater a few of the crews working on the cars out by the back loading dock. This was before the apartments/condos up on the hill were built.

Really enjoyed your pictures and stories. I was born in Hayswood Hospital, so sad to see it in the shape it is in now.

Hey Susan! Yeah, those seats are a bit tiny for sure! Also pretty tough on the back. ANd yes, that's the Rathskeller! Loved the place.

Yep, according to the aforementioned podcast, it was once an Oldsmobile dealership before becoming "Schoonover Imports" around 1975. Specialized in Subaru and Saab. DIdn't know about the pipe manifolds, thanks for pointing that out!

Hi Ronny!

#1 ~ Victoria Theatre in Dayton is awesome. I saw Gordon Lightfoot there last year. However, an observation: the seats are really small compared to newer venues. But, way cool renovated theatre.

#2 ~ The Indy photo ~ Is that the Biergarten at the Rathskeller? Been there, too. The Rathskeller is awesome, too.

From memory this was a Saab dealership back in the 60's/70's called Schoonover Motors. The odd shaped beer garden in back with a 14' wide gap (big enough to drive a car through) was the service department. If you go back you'll see 1/2" pipes and valves attached to 3 pipe manifolds placed along the walls. those were the automotive lift controls. but as old as that building is it predated Saab in America. Id bet it was a Packard/Ford/Desoto 1920's dealership...

Enjoy the dump on the Riverfront with the tens of fans who bother to show up, Joe!

Glad the dump is gone. Go Cyclones!

Seeing it preserved as some sort of venue would've been great. Doubt those seats could've held up in the elements, though.

Thanks for sharing your memories.

It could depend on where the 5-star rating was coming from. Gourmet Room had a Mobil 5-Star, which is good, but not AS good as Michelin. They could've had someone else's 5-star in 68/69.

2018-03-22T14:23:50.673-04:00

I can't remember if I ever went there or not. I grew up in Greenhills 1974-1992 and at one point, went to the Ice Capades show as someone above mentioned. I seem to remember seeing all my arena shows (Ice Capades, the circus, Kenny Rogers, John Denver, Yes, etc) at Riverfront Coliseum. If only your pictures insinuated they were turning the Gardens into a semi-open air venue...

Great series. In my memory, the one meal I had in The Gourmet Room was in 1968-69 and the place was a 5-star at the time. The linked Lisa Murtha article says the 5 stars came in 1970 so some part of my memory is obviously wrong. I'm starting to get used to that.

Hey, thanks! I didn't realize that it was labeled as something else besides just The Gourmet Room. I'd kill to have a drink up there in a revitalized building.

My parents hung out at the Gourmet Room in the madmen era. I just wanted to let you know that there was a lounge that ran along the windows before you went up the stairs to the dining room. It was called the Panorama lounge. The tables and chairs ran along the windows and was sort of the waiting room for the dining room.
