Deadliest Animals on The Planet

Sun, 04 Jan 2015 18:34:00 +0000

#1 Blue-Ringed Octopus The blue-ringed octopus can be found in crevices in tide pools and coral reefs. Despite their small size (5 to 8 inches), their venom is powerful enough to take down a human. Once bitten, numbness and paralysis may begin to take place. Death usually results from respiratory failure.   #2 Brazilian Wandering Spider Known as one of the world's deadliest spiders, a bite can cause irregular heartbeats, immediate pain and cold sweats. If untreated, results could be fatal. In men? It can cause erections lasting for hours and can lead to impotence.   #3 African Lion As natural hunters at the top of the food chain, their giant fangs, razor sharp claws, and lightning speed put them on this list.   #4 Saltwater Crocodile Watch out! If attacked by one, the saltwater crocodile can travel with astonishing speed and strength. It kills its prey by clamping down with its jaws and then violently shaking the victim from side to side. This attack can separate your arms, legs, and head from your torso before being consumed in pieces!   #5 Great White Shark The aggressiveness of the great white shark have been greatly exaggerated, but that doesn't stop it from making our list of dangerous animals. These creatures can detect one drop of blood in 100 L of water and smell it from up to 3 miles away. Although humans are not on their favorite list of things to eat, they will come up to taste you before swimming away.   #6 Cape Buffalo Despite their cow-like appearance, the cape buffalo can charge and gore you with its razor sharp horns at any moment. It is extremely difficult to kill instantly, and if wounded, will circle around and stalk its hunter to wait for the right moment to attack. At 5.5 feet high and weighing over 1700 pounds, you don't want to mess with this animal.   #7 Asian Cobra (Naja Naja) If cornered, the Asian cobra will bite again, and again, injecting a large quantity of venom into its victim. Some species can even shoot their venom out. Once attacked, the toxins in the venom can cause paralyzation and lead to respiratory failure or cardiac arrest.   #8 Elephants Elephants are the world's largest mammal, weighing in between 6,000 to 15,000 pounds. Although they can be gentle creatures, their size alone can be dangerous. They have the ability to crush rhinoceros and can attack without warning for no apparent reason.   #9 Hippopotamus We hear all about tigers and lions attacking people, but the hippopotamus? You'd be surprised to learn that while this animal is mostly an herbivore, it is also aggressive, unpredictable, and not afraid to attack even without being provoked.   #10 Mosquito Mosquito bites may be common and harmless, but one wrong bite can introduce a deadly parasite into your circulatory system. This parasite causes between 350 and 500 million people to be infected with malaria every year and is often fatal (predominantly in sub-Saharan Africa).   #11 Australian Box Jellyfish Found in the northern half of Australia, the box jellyfish contains one of the world's deadliest poisons. What's worse is that their transparency and pale blue color make them virtually invisible in water and unavoidable. Contact with the tentacles can cause cardiac arrest in just a few minutes.   #12 Golden Dart Frog The poison dart frog may be small, but it packs a deadly poison called batrachotoxins. Coming into contact with one of these guys can kill you almost instantaneously. Each one carries enough poison to kill between 10-20 humans. [...]

The World's Ugliest Animals

Sun, 04 Jan 2015 18:30:00 +0000

#1 Chinese Crested Not all of the world's ugliest animals are exotic. This frighteningly ugly creature is in fact a dog. It's a Chinese Crested to be exact. And it's so hideous that it's been officially dubbed The World's Ugliest Dog. No one's going to dispute that he came by it honestly.   #2 Horseshoe Bat The horseshoe bat has a face that only a mother could love. And event that's in doubt. Those flaps on his face are part of his nose. They work like ears to help him better echolocate his prey. They also make him one of the ugliest bats on the planet. An already ugly species.   #3 Naked Mole Rat These are hands down the ugliest rodents on planet earth. They're also some of the most bizarre. They live underground in colonies like insects. They' also live unfortunately long lives. Each mole rat lives up to 30 years. Part of their longevity is due to the fact that they're almost immune to cancer.   #4 Celestial Eyed Gold Fish It's hard not to look at the Celestial Eyed Gold Fish without laughing out loud. We're not sure what evolution was thinking. If we were in charge, we'd give these guys another crack at the drawing board. How do they even see where they're going?   #5 Aye Aye This critter is just as weird as its name. The tarsier doesn't hold a candle to this ugly primate. If those fingers don't give you nightmares, those beedy little eyes will. There's no official list for the world's most horrifying animals. But as soon as it surfaces, this guy's a dead ringer for the number one spot.   #6 Blobfish Finally, the blobfish. If you're wondering why, it's time for an eye exam. This gooey wonder lives off the coast of Australia. Somehow, it feeds on crabs and lobsters. We have a feeling that it frightens them to death and then feeds on their corpse. [...]

Amazing Extinct Animals

Sun, 04 Jan 2015 18:26:00 +0000

#1 Quagga Like a mix between the zebra and horse, the quagga was striped in the front half of its body (with brown and white) and solid brown in its backside with some white. It was the first extinct animal to have its DNA analyzed in 1984, and it was found that it was more closely related to the zebra than the horse. Because they were so easy to find, they were hunted for their meat and skins. They were also shipped from South Africa to Europe for the zoos often.   #2 Baiji The baiji is a freshwater dolphin, found only in the Yangtze River in China. As a result of industrialization, heavy fishing, river transportation and hydroelectricity, the population of these sea creatures declined dramatically. It’s quite sad that they aren’t around anymore. Common dolphins are cute enough, but these have a little bit more charm to them with their pointed mouths.   #3 Laughing Owl The laughing owl was once abundant in New Zealand, and has been known for their peculiar noises. Many describe their call as loud and “made up of a series of dismal shrieks frequently repeated”. Not sure if this would have been nice or ridiculously scary if you were to be in the woods by yourself, but we guess we’ll never really know now.   #4 Rocky Mountain Locust The rocky mountain locust used to range through the western half of the United States and Canada. How did such a swarm of insects that was once so abundant die out? Scientists believe that the plowing and irrigation of settlers disrupted their natural life cycle, killing off their eggs. Another example of how humans have affected the lives of many species. In some way, we suppose it's fortunate for us, as they are no longer around to affect the state of crops.   #5 Dodo Penguins and emus aren’t the only birds that can’t fly. The dodo was a chubby little thing, standing up to 3 feet tall, that once walked on an island called Mauritius in the Indian Ocean until the late 17th century. Scientists believe that it is flightless because it had an abundance of food on the island and didn’t have many predators… until sailors came upon the island. As a result of hunting, usage of their natural habitat, and the introduction of pigs, dogs, and other invasive species, the bird eventually died out.   #6 Pyrenean Ibex The pyrenean ibex is a wild goat that was last seen in 2000 when a tree fell on it. The female was often mistaken for a deer because its fur was brown throughout the summer, and the males had large thick horns that curved outwards and backwards, and then outwards and downwards. Although it is technically extinct, scientists were able to successfully implant its DNA into a coat. Alas, it was alive!… for seven minutes.   #7 Woolly Mammoth Many of us know about the woolly mammoth from the movie, Ice Age. Because they were frozen in Siberia and Alaska, scientists were able to study them extensively. What once coexisted with humans (as the movie would lead us to believe), they disappeared due to climate change, habitat changes, and hunting since their tusks were valued for the ivory.   #8 Great Auk The great auk was about 3 feet tall, and is similar to the penguin. It was pretty large and lived in the Northern Hemisphere off the coast of northern Europe and northeastern North America. The stories of how they died are a bit strange. In Scotland, the last known one was executed because villages believed it was a witch. Others were hunted as food and bait in Iceland, where fisherman not only killed off a mama and papa, but also crushed their remaining egg.   #9 Saber-toothed Cat Another animal made famous from the movie, Ice Age, the saber-toothed cat is known for its teeth which extended down past its mouth and curved towards its body. It is believed that they pounced on victims, sunk their teeth in, and left it to flop around until it eventually bled to death.   #10 Giant Ground Sloths Ground sloths (w[...]

The Strangest Animals You've Never Heard Of

Sun, 04 Jan 2015 18:22:00 +0000

#1 Spiny Orb Weaver Spider With its protective turtle-like shield and certain species who have a color scheme similar to Iron Man's suit. They are found in America, keep your eyes peeled!   #2 Pink Fairy Armadillo If there was ever an animal that sounds like it walked straight out of the pages of a Disney-themed comic book, it is the Pink Fairy Armadillo. They look like a hybrid between a ferret and a lobster, and we are loving the light pink hue.   #3 The Penis Snake We would be lying if we told you we felt comfortable posting this picture or description, but this species re-emerged in 2011 after it was presumed extinct. It is actually a caecillian (Google it), not a snake, and it can grow up to 80 centimeters. That will make the average dude jealous, no?   #4 Sunda Colungo This animal could be easily explained by telling you that it is another form of the flying lemur. But from the colors to the increased wingspan it is obvious it is much, much more than just another flying lemur.   #5 Pacu Fish These offshoot breed of piranhas are actually larger than their vicious cousin, but they are bizarre for their dentures. They have teeth that look amazingly similar to the lower set of champers on a human!   #6 Probiscis Monkey And now presenting the most eligible animal to star in the next Dr. Seuss movie! Not really, but you'd be fibbing if you told us this guy would not fit in Seussland. He is also trying out for Dobby the House Elf's stunt double in the Harry Potter DVD outtakes.   #7 Sun Fish The perpetually bubble blowing fish, aka the Sun Fish, is one of the coolest looking creatures in the entire ocean. From the dual upper and lower fins to the constant Oh! face, this fish is a looker.   #8 Blob Fish The fish that launched a thousand potential memes is the blob fish, potentially the winner of funniest face in the ocean. Look at this guy and try not to giggle, we dare you!   #9 Tufted Deer Known in parts of the world as the Vampire Deer, namely in the Likes offices, the Tufted Deer has two jutting fang-like teeth that give it one of the most distinct looks in the animal kingdom.   #10 Fossa Madagascar was fictional, but every one of the animals you saw, including the energetic singing Fossa, were based off real characters. Get us one of these in exchange for a dog, ASAP! [...]

20 of the World’s Weirdest Endangered Animal Species

Mon, 09 Jan 2012 05:24:00 +0000

Like much of the futuristic green building designs and great green architecture of today, the ugly redheaded stepchildren of the animal kingdom don’t get much attention compared to the perennial favorite endangered animals like pandas, polar bears, and owls. These are the cute, majestic, and otherwise emblematic creatures of the endangered species list. But there are hundreds more animal species on our wondrous planet that are critically threatened and need both publicity and support. From bats the size of bees to poison-slinging mammals, lizards that don’t eat for a decade to seals with giant inflatable faces, here are the 25 strangest, most bizarre, unusual and important endangered species living on the “EDGE” (Evolutionarily Distinct & Globally Endangered) – and these aren’t even counting mind-controlling animal marvels or strange and amazing ancient animals now extinct! 1. Solenodon No, it’s not an ROUS.  The strange solenodon is a mammal found primarily in Cuba and Hispanola. Sure, it looks cute and manageable enough – sort of like an over-sized hedgehog. Too bad the solenodon injects rattlesnake-like venom through its teeth, the only mammal to do so. Easily annoyed, the solenodon bites at the drop of a banana leaf. Still, being both a carrion feeder and insectivore, it is a vital species in its ecosystem. It was thought to be extinct until scientists found a few still alive in 2003. It is in grave danger of extinction. 2. Kakapo This is not only the rarest, but the strangest parrot in the world. Imagine a rather portly nocturnal bird that never flies, preferring to hike through hilly forest for miles every night. It weighs in as the heaviest parrot in the world at 8 pounds. Imagine this and you have the very real (but virtually extinct) kakapo. A resident of New Zealand, which is home to a number of rare birds, there are only 62 kakapos remaining on earth. (Bonus fact: New Zealand is full of unusual creatures. It originally had no native land mammals, so its many unique birds evolved in unusual ways – which unfortunately has made them very vulnerable to mammals that were brought in during European colonization.) 3. Angler Fish Some guys just can’t catch a break. The male angler fish is 1/20th the size of the female angler fish. The huge, traumatizingly ugly spiny fish with the glowing “fishing rod” lure you saw in Finding Nemo? That’s the female. The male is that tiny little blob attached to his horrific goddess that you never noticed. He burrows in with his teeth and she “feeds” him ex-utero style until he eventually loses his eyeballs, then internal organs and finally his life. By then, she’s got his sperm so it doesn’t matter. Anglers are deep-sea fish, but that doesn’t mean they’re safe from threat. Go on, have another look at these lovely ladies of the deep: 4. Leaping Lesbian Lizards! Officially named Cnemidophorus uniparens, these American desert lizards reproduce despite the fact that they’re all female. Interestingly, some of them simulate sexual acts (above, left) with each other just like male and female lizards, and it’s been discovered that when they do they reproduce more successfully than their abstemious sisters. 5. The Kiwi Everyone knows the beloved endangered kiwi is a flightless bird. As if to make up for its winged impotence, the kiwi is actually a violent, temperamental little bird. But its quirks don’t stop there. The only bird with whiskers is also distinctly dog-like in its ability to sniff out food and threats. In fact, it has the most highly developed sense of smell of any bird, lifting its “nose” (beak) into the breeze to determine its surroundings, just like a dog would. That’s probably because kiwis are also the only bird to have prominent nostrils. Contrary to popular belief, the kiwi does have wings, but they are tiny and difficult to detect under the loose, fluffy, hair-like feathers. The kiwi has m[...]

Strange Animals From Japanese Museum

The Exotic Animals of Australia

Wed, 06 Jul 2011 19:11:00 +0000

(image) There are many places on earth that you can visit on your vacations and family holidays, but Australia tops the list for places with unusual animals. There are some of the strangest animals living in this part of the world. For some reason, Australia has the largest collection of unusual animals in the world.
(image) The kangaroo is one of the most unusual animals in the world and Australia is its home. All over the world, people associate the strange looking animal with the country of Australia. It is on the money and the national symbol of Australia. In Australia there are four different kinds of kangaroo. The red kangaroo, eastern gray, western gray and antilopine are the different types of kangaroo that are found in the country The red kangaroo can stand as tall as six feet seven and some weigh over two hundred pounds.
(image) When people first started visiting this part of the world, the tales of the exotic creatures started reaching back to all areas of Europe. Can you imagine how the tales of the kangaroo sounded to those back in Europe when travelers returned with the story? It looks similar to a deer in the head area, but it stands on only two legs. The animal hops on the two back legs and babies are held in the front pouch. The stories must have sounded like exaggeration to the folks back home. It is clearly understandable why some people may not have believed the tales of the strange creatures.(image)
The Tasmanian Tiger is another animal that once roamed the countryside of Australia. The animal is now extinct but it once hunted the kangaroo. The Tasmanian tiger is actually similar to a wolf but it has the stripes of a tiger extending from the shoulders to the tail. The animal is actually a marsupial like a kangaroo or a koala bear.
(image) The Tasmanian tiger is no longer roaming the countryside of Australia with the last one dying in the London Zoo during the 1930s. Even though these unique and unusual creatures are currently extinct, there have been some reports in Australia of the Tasmanian tiger, but these reports have been unsubstantiated.

Australian Animals and Plants

Wed, 06 Jul 2011 19:06:00 +0000

(image) The animals that the early settler; found in Australia looked very strange to them. They saw none of the animals that they had known in England. Instead they saw strange animals they had never seen or heard of before. There was a tall animal with short front legs and very long hind legs, and a thick, long tail. It was a kangaroo. It moves very fast over the ground by taking long jumps with the back legs. The mother kangaroo carries her baby in a big pocket on the front of her body. This kind of animal is called a marsupial. There are other marsupials in Australia. The wallaby is one. It is very much like a kangaroo, but smaller. The Australian opossum is another marsupial. Even more strange was the platypus, or duck-billed water mole.(image)
This is a strange mixture of a bird, a fish, and a four-footed animal. Scientists ever since have agreed that it is most remarkable. It swims in the water like a fish, it has a bill like a duck's, the male has fighting spurs on his back feet, and the female nurses her young as a dog or cat does but she lays eggs that hatch like the eggs of a bird or a fish. This is an animal that has never been found anywhere except in Australia. The native Australian dog was strange to the British, too. It is called a dingo, and it is quite different from dogs in England. It is a wild dog, however, not a wolf nor a fox, as many of the earlysettlers thought at first. Another animal that had never been seen anywhere else was the koala bear, a fluffy little animal that looks like a living model of a toy teddy bear. It is very friendly. Although people in many parts of the world have said they would like to have koala bears for pets, it is difficult, because the only food the koala eats is eucalyptus leaves, and the eucalyptus tree grows mostly in Australia.(image)
There are other strange animals in Australia, which can be found nowhere else. The spiny anteater is one. This is a long-nosed animal with spines all over its body. It lives on a diet of ants. Its scientific name is the echidna. As remarkable as the echidna is the wombat, a large animal that digs in the ground to find the roots on which it lives. The wombat sometimes reaches a weight of nearly a hundred pounds. The trees and plants of Australia were strange to the early settlers.

Funny Bears

Thu, 05 May 2011 14:17:00 +0000

Bears are mammals of the family Ursidae. Bears are classified as caniforms, or doglike carnivorans, with the pinnipeds being their closest living relatives. Although there are only eight living species of bear, they are widespread, appearing in a wide variety of habitats throughout the Northern Hemisphere and partially in the Southern Hemisphere. Bears are found in the continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.A bear is posing on volvo.Common characteristics of modern bears include a large body with stocky legs, a long snout, shaggy hair, plantigrade paws with five nonretractile claws, and a short tail. While the polar bear is mostly carnivorous and the giant panda feeds almost entirely on bamboo, the remaining six species are omnivorous, with largely varied diets including both plants and animals. Two bears are helping each other. With the exceptions of courting individuals and mothers with their young, bears are typically solitary animals. They are generally diurnal, but may be active during the night (nocturnal) or twilight (crepuscular), particularly around humans. Bears are aided by an excellent sense of smell, and despite their heavy build and awkward gait, they can run quickly and are adept climbers and swimmers. In autumn some bear species forage large amounts of fermented fruits which affects their behaviour.[1] Bears use shelters such as caves and burrows as their dens, which are occupied by most species during the winter for a long period of sleep similar to hibernation.A bear is mad. He wants to attack a child.Bears have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur. To this day, they play a prominent role in the arts, mythology, and other cultural aspects of various human societies. In modern times, the bear's existence has been pressured through the encroachment on its habitats and the illegal trade of bears and bear parts, including the Asian bile bear market. The IUCN lists six bear species as vulnerable or endangered, and even least concern species such as the brown bear are at risk of extirpation in certain countries. The poaching and international trade of these most threatened populations is prohibited, but still ongoing.A bear is slipping and losing his balance on ice.A bear is washing his hand.[...]

The Puppy Born To A Sheep

Sat, 02 Apr 2011 00:00:00 +0000

Vets say it’s impossible - but to Chinese farmer Liu Naiying his birth is a miracle.
For Mr Liu insists one of his sheep has given birth to a dog
The 'puppy' has wool like a lamb but its mouth, nose, eyes, paws and tail look more like a dog's.
His 'sheep dog' even plays like a hound.

The birth has prompted thousands to flock to his farm in Shaanxi Province to see for themselves.

Mr Liu told how he found the unusual baby animal shortly after it was born in one of his fields.

‘I was herding the sheep, and saw a sheep licking her newborn lamb on the grassland. The lamb was still wet,’ he said.

‘When I went up close to check on the lamb I was shocked because it looked so weird, like a cross between a sheep and a dog.

‘I was a bit frightened, as I've been raising sheep for 20 years and had never seen such a creature.’

Yue Guozhang, a researcher at Xi'an City Animal Husbandry Technology Centre, said sheep and dogs were different species.

‘It's not possible that a sheep could become pregnant with a puppy,’ he said. ‘It's likely that this is just an abnormal lamb.’

Half colored strange animals

Sat, 25 Sep 2010 14:01:00 +0000

(image) Half colored strange animals
In June 2007, in Bar Harbor, Maine, a lobster fisherman caught a lobster that looks half-cooked. One side is the typical green of most lobsters, and the other is an orange color lobster's look like after they've been cooked. The fisherman donated the lobster to Mount Desert Oceanearium, where he was informed the odds of finding such a chimera are one in 50 million to 100 million. Like Blue lobsters they are lottery.
