New update 2010 Toyota Prius Car

The last Toyota Prius flipped the automotive world on its head, changing the purchasing priorities of American car buyers seemingly overnight. Attracted to its sky-high fuel economy, practical body style and green image, consumers came to the Prius for many new car searches (regardless of their actual motoring needs). What was once an automotive oddity relegated to hemp-wearing greenies, the Prius grew to become the country's 13th-best-selling vehicle in 2008. Now there is the all-new 2010 Toyota Prius. It's poised to keep the hybrid revolution going, but with key changes to make it more appealing to an even wider audience.




A quick look at the 2010 Prius will reveal a familiar shape, but it's a little sleeker and a tad (dare we say) sportier than its predecessor. Visually, it looks smaller, but it's an optical illusion that creates a more streamlined appearance. Indeed, the 2010 Prius is less than an inch longer and wider than last year's model. The interior is a different story, as headroom has been reduced by a fraction of an inch. This wouldn't seem to be a big deal, but in our testing we found that taller rear seat occupants had their hair grazing the roof, and that wasn't the case before.



Under the hood resides a revised version of Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive. There's a larger and more powerful gasoline engine now, but instead of providing quicker off-the-line acceleration, it allows more effortless highway cruising. A smaller electric motor contributes less torque to the overall powertrain dance, but it improves efficiency. There are other mechanical changes, too, but the end result is a jump in fuel economy, from last year's EPA-estimated 48 mpg city/45 mpg highway to this year's 51/48 mpg.

Toyota has also addressed other previous Prius faults. A more rigid chassis and a revised electric-assist steering system help to improve steering feel and driver confidence -- the old Prius' steering had a disconnected, video-gamelike feel. While the Prius still isn't exactly fun to drive, its straight-line stability is a lot better now, and in general it feels more like a normal car.

L.A. Auto Show A VW diesel is Green Car of Year

And who's the greenest of them all? Volkswagen's new Jetta TDI.

The sporty diesel-powered sedan was named 2009 Green Car of the Year at the Los Angeles Auto Show today, beating out two hybrids, another diesel and a car that looks like a golf cart.

"It breaks new ground in the field of clean diesel," said Ron Cogan, editor and publisher of Green Car Journal, which sponsors the award. He cited the Jetta's "satisfying driving experience," low emissions and 41 mpg highway fuel economy.


The other finalists in the competition were BMW's 335d, also a diesel; the Ford Fusion gasoline-electric hybrid; the Saturn Vue hybrid; and the ultra-compact Smart ForTwo.

The award was bestowed by a nine-member panel of judges, including Frances Beinecke, president of the Natural Resources Defense Council; "Tonight Show" host Jay Leno; car guy Carroll Shelby; and Carl Pope, executive director of the Sierra Club.


Pope conceded that a small group of Sierra Club members might question the group's participation in a contest that recognizes any automobile as "green" when there are such eco-friendly alternatives as bike riding or public transportation.

But the prevailing view is that environmentalists can help influence the sale, and more important the development, of cars that pollute less.

"The awards make a difference to people who design and engineer cars, and we want to get their support," Pope said in an interview earlier this week.

Cogan sounded a similar note at today's ceremony at the Los Angeles Convention Center: "Increasingly, concept cars ... are green in nature," he said. "Some may find their way to showrooms in just a few short years. Green cars represent the future of the industry."

This year's award is likely to raise fewer eyebrows than last year's winner: the eight-passenger V-8 Chevy Tahoe hybrid. Pope, no fan of sport utility vehicles, defended the choice.

"The reality is most people drive SUVs in urban use," the environmentalist said. "And the Tahoe got the same urban mileage as the Toyota Camry."

The BMW 6 series was relaunched in 2004 with the BMW 645i. This car was a two door, four passenger luxury sports car. This car is ideal for a sports car enthusiast who would prefer a larger, more practical car compared to the 650's 2 passenger, lighter peers. In 2006, BMW upgraded the 645i to a 650i by increasing the engine a little. When including options and taxes, the 650i tends to run at about $80,000, so it's not exactly cheap. Here are the pros and cons of the car.


Pros
Amazing handling: The car is amazing to drive. When you drive the car, you feel as if you have total control over the vehicle. A car such as the Mercedes CLS (also priced near $80k) just cannot match this car's handling. The BMW 650i definitely has the handling one would expect from a German-made luxury sports car.

Gadgets: The BMW 650i comes with BMW's Idrive, an all-encompassing electronic system. The Idrive controls the navigation system, music, air conditioning, as well as communication system. The Idrive also has voice command, making it easy to use when driving. Some believe the Idrive is a bit difficult to operate. That's hogwash. Within two weeks of owning the car, anyone competent enough to use a computer or a DVD should be able to operate the Idrive flawlessly. The Idrive is the gadget-lover's ultimate car toy.


Interior: The interior of the 650i is beautiful. It has modern, classy feel to it. Your taller passengers will certainly appreciate being seated in the front though, as the back is not exactly spacious.

Acceleration: With a V8 and 360 hp, the car isn't exactly going to be outrun by a Civic. The acceleration and amazing breaks can also help you get out of accidents that other cars wouldn't be able to avoid.




Cons

Reliability: Expect to make stops at the service center every now and then. While it is a wonderful car, it is prone to electronic and tire issues.

Price: At about $80,000, it's not exactly in the everyman's budget. But if you are willing to spend this much money on a car, the 650i is definitely a good one to check out.

Among the list of thirty six new vehicles out of the market before January 1, 2005 for at least five countries, on at least two continents, the Audi 6 was named as the World Car of the Year for 2005. This was held during the media preview for the Canadian International Auto Show held last February 16, 2005 in Toronto. The decision came out from the forty eight international automobile journalists representing sixteen countries that acted as the jury. They use twenty separate parameters including acceleration, braking, vehicle dynamics, safety features, cargo, and off road capabilities. They then selected the top 10 vehicles for the final round of voting.
The final selection was rated on five key areas of importance to costumers: merit, value, safety and environmental responsibility, significance, and wow factor! - the car's emotional appeal. The secret ballots were then collected and tabulated by KPMG, an international accounting firm.
The World Car of the Year programme is administered as a non-profit corporation with a Steering Committee of six journalists who oversee and monitor the integrity of the voting process. The Audi 6 surpasses the Volvo S40-V50 and Porsche 911 in a close race to be declared as the World Car of the Year.


"The concept of national borders is now almost non-existent in terms of where vehicles and their components are designed, engineered, developed, and built ... or where they are sold," said British automotive journalist, Graham Johnson, who is also a co-chair of the award program. "Considering the ever-increasing globalization of the automotive industry," he added, "the concept of a World Car of the Year award program was inevitable ... it is truly an idea whose time has come."

"An award of this magnitude rests like a crown jewel among a host of accolades for our new A6. To be selected as the ultimate winner from a list of so many deserving vehicles, by automotive experts from around the world is truly gratifying. It signals the universal appeal of Audi's approach to designing and building the most progressive, sporty cars in the premium class," said Johan de Nysschen, Executive Vice-President of Audi of America Inc., who received the award. "We are delighted to be the first-time recipients of such a prestigious award,” he added.

Toyota Delivers One-of-a-kind Tundra Launch

Toyota unleashed a one-of-a-kind launch that features its redesigned Tundra pickup truck. The launching of its second generation Tundra in Charlotte, N.C. was graced by various species of automotive press from farming, towing, aftermarket trades, construction, and hunting and fishing, RV, and motorcycle magazines all at the same ride and drive.

"People in construction, farming, mining, will help give us credibility," said Michael O'Brien, product planning manager. "Among other things, the commercial sales fleet has been charged with finding high-visibility operations, such as road construction and maintenance companies to sign up for fleet purchases of the truck.

The diversity of reporters made the campaign one of the biggest in over 45 years of Toyota's presence in the United States market. "Toyota is treating the launch of its Tundra full-size pickup as if it were launching an entirely new division, including reorganizing its marketing and product development teams," said Ernest Bastien, VP vehicle operations group. "We have co-located planning, advertising, PR, event planning, distribution, accounting, and the company's University of Toyota."

Five months before the launch of Tundra, Toyota opened its CAD files to SEMA member aftermarket companies to create a two-part dealer training program and launch a dealership design upgrade program. Said programs include the introduction of pickup Toyota Tundra truck parts to dealers. The redesigned 2007 Tundra was launched at the 2006 Chicago Auto Show. It will go on sale in mid-January next year.

"The only dealer training immersion we have done that even comes close to that was for the Prius launch," said Bastien. "Toyota's dealership training road show in January is also much larger than before. "We will train some 24,000 salespeople. For the Camry launch we trained 18,000."

Aside from the diverse launch of Tundra, Toyota will also launch a road show with the Camry. Toyota Camry OEM parts are now made more sophisticated to improve quality and drive feel. According to Bastien, Toyota's "Prove It Tour," likened to Dodge's 2002 "Truckville" tour, will hit some 650 events in over 300 markets. It will also cover NASCAR and Daytona 500 auto events.

The automaker is also making its divisions more intensive than before. As with it Scion division, Toyota is doing a dealer sales-force training program which is beyond the ordinary. It is running a 4-day product and marketing immersion named "Truck Champions." It means that individual dealerships are chosen by the automaker to oversee sales and marketing for Tundra.

Super Duty: FORD The Better Or FORD The Worst?

Ford Motor Co. has earlier unveiled its all-new lineup F-Series Super Duty truck lineup which includes 2008 F-450. The latest lineup will be couple with the biggest pickup production ever made by the automaker.

Early next year, Ford's redesigned version of huge pickup vehicles will be having their debut. To add extra charisma to Ford Super Duty trucks, the automaker has added towing capacity, refined suspension, innovative tailgate, 6.4-liter diesel engine and other exceptional features.

Some analysts expressed their impression about the debut of the latest Ford trucks. Erich Merkle, an analyst with IRN Inc. noted, "The Super Duty is incredibly important for Ford because, not only does it represent some pretty serious volume for them, (but) it's also quite profitable. Of course, these days, every launch is critical for Ford."

On one side, some analysts have noted their concerns regarding the risk of economic environment for selling commercial trucks. Others are also saying that Ford is only left with little choices so the automaker opted to upgrade Super Duty trucks to bring back its footing in the market.

Ford Super Duty has outsold other heavy-duty trucks. From the year 2000 to 2005, Ford has sold about 750,000 heavy-duty pickup trucks. Further, the sales of Super Duty accounts for 40 percent of the overall F-Series sales.

Pete Reyes, chief engineer of the Super Duty line said, "The biggest challenge with the 450 was making it a legitimate pickup. The challenge with a pickup is providing excellent ride, excellent handling and excellent stability -- both empty and fully loaded. It's tough luxury."

General Motors, Ford's rival, is also releasing new models of heavy-duty pickup trucks. Hence, to make a good competition, Ford is releasing its mighty F-450. It can be recalled that Ford F-350 Super Duty pickup parts have already established its standing. As a fact, F-350 was given a best-in-class payload and weight ratings. To boost further what F-350 has achieved, the automaker is giving F-450 a towing capacity in excess of 24,000 pounds and a payload capacity in excess of 6,000 pounds.

The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) has recently named the twelve cleanest cars in the US today. The agency named the best fuel efficient cars in the market today to aid consumers who are in the market for a car that will give them great fuel economy and would be able to take a part in the drive to protect the environment. For ten years, the council has compiled the twelve greenest cars for every model year. And for only the second time in the history of the council, every single car included in this year's list comes from Asian car makers. Range Rover Sport, Edged Ahead!

Ford Motor Corp. has expressed its avowal to hang on to Land Rover and Jaguar despite the fluctuating market trend that has caused great loss to most of the car giants but Toyota. Ford's predicament was worsened by the delivery problem which has prevented Jaguar XJ from reaching the showrooms. Said event resulted to wipe out sales in September. On the positive side of it, Rover takes its opportunity to shine through its Range Rover model.

Range Rover Sport sales increased by a quarter last month. Said figure has helped to augment the total overall Ford's figures by eight per cent to 33,527. On one hand, the latest from automaker called Range Rover Sport has added four-wheel Electronic Traction Control, Dynamic Response system, four-piston Brembo, renowned Harman Kardon Logic 7 digital surround-sound system, electronic air suspension, permanent 4WD and other essential features. This car has an MSRP starting at $57,250, more affordable than Range Rover.

With regards to the Jaguar brand, its XJ model has exceeded the expectations of the automaker. In fact, the sales yielded more than double this year. It soared to 73 percent and edged ahead at 3,354 cars sold.

Jaguar's spokesperson said, "We are in an extremely competitive market, and we are still in the process of refocusing the company's position, which has had some impact on sales. This is one month's sales figures, and there is one clear reason why they are down. The XK is the pointer to the future, and that enjoyed a particularly strong month. But the XK has had a strong performance which is showing the way ahead."
