Golf Apparel

When it comes to golf apparel, you really have many choices available.  What to wear isn’t always first on the golfer’s mind, but choosing the right golf apparel can make a difference in playing well and playing not so well.  It’s true!

Many golf clubs have rules as to what golf apparel is acceptable on their course.  This usually means no tank tops or short shorts, all players must wear shirts with collars, and no jeans are allowed.  Other courses are less restrictive in their clothing and you can choose what you want to wear as long as it is tasteful.

Generally male golfers will wear khaki pants and a collared polo shirt.  In warm weather, fitted shorts are generally permitted as part of the golf apparel.  Most men will also opt for a hat to keep the sun out of their eyes.

Golf apparel for women, however, can run the gamut.  Golf skirts are very popular for female golfers because they are less restrictive, but others opt for shorts or loose pants.  Polo shirts are also worn by women – some sleeveless polos are also allowed on upscale courses.  Women tend to opt for visors to keep the sun away although hats are another option.

When choosing your golf apparel, you should take care that the clothing is not too restrictive.  You will want plenty of room to move around because your golf swing depends on your body moving in a fluid, smooth motion.  There’s nothing worse than clothing that is too tight – especially on the golf course.

When choosing pants or shorts, it’s convenient to have pockets.  Many golfers like to have pockets so they can carry golf tees, divot fixers, ball markers, and even extra balls, although we don’t recommend the latter as it can throw off your swing quite a bit.

You will want to choose clothes that are made of lightweight, breathable fabrics – especially if you golf primarily in cold weather.  Many manufacturers of golf apparel know this and keep it mind during production, so it shouldn’t be difficult to find clothing like this.

You can find adequate golf apparel in many places.  Golf course pro shops will carry specific lines of golf clothing that will conform to their dress code, but they will be a bit more expensive than buying them in a store.  Find a golf store and you will find a great selection of golf apparel to choose from.  Finally, you can get some great deal on golf apparel on the Internet in many, many places, often at discount prices.

Golf Memberships

2011-08-23T05:59:24.093-10:00

Golf Memberships

Most golf club offer memberships to players making them part of the club.  Having a membership in a golf club can be very advantageous both monetarily as well as socially!

A golf membership will give you access to certain things non-members won’t have.  Your greens fees may be reduced or, more often, included in the membership.  That means you can play as much as you want and not have to pay greens fees.  Most golf memberships don’t include the use of a cart, so you’ll probably pay extra for that.

Having access to programs with your golf membership is another great perk.  That might mean reduced fees for league play, free entry into tournaments, and access to the club’s facilities for other events like meetings, dinners, and more.

There are a lot of golf courses that won’t let you play unless you have membership with them.  These are called private clubs and allow members and their guests only to play.  That means without a golf membership to that club, you have to know someone who is a member in order to get on the course.

Even small, public courses offer golf memberships.  This is a great way for them to generate more play as well as make some guaranteed money.  They will offer up some of the other advantages that private clubs do in the form of free or reduced greens fees, etc.

Sometimes, golf memberships can be quite steep.  For example, one of this author’s local golf clubs sets membership fees at $700 per year for a single membership.  The course is run by a Senior PGA pro and it is a beautiful place to play.  When you consider the amount of golfing we do, we have paid for our membership in just a few weeks just by saving on greens fees since we don’t pay to play as a member of the club.

When we speak of a golf membership, we can also refer to membership in a golfing organization.  You have to be a pro to join the PGA, but amateurs can join amateur organizations.  Most areas have regional golf organizations where you can buy a membership to become part of them.  These associations often hold sanctioned tournaments and can really help get your name known at least locally as a good golfer.

If you’re an avid golfer, you really should consider buying a membership in your local golf club.  It can be a very good move and can save you tons and tons of money while allowing you to enjoy the game you love!

Golf Ball

2011-04-17T18:18:09.875-10:00

Golf Ball

Casual golfers don’t give a lot of thought to choosing the right golf ball.  They think of the golf ball as simply a tool that really isn’t important.  After all, you’re just whacking it around the course, right?  Wrong!  Having the right golf ball can gain you distance in your drives, make it easier to pull off finesse shots, and so much more!

Basically, there are three types of balls:  balata, two-piece, or a combination of both.  Golf balls are constructed with three types of purposes in mind as well:  distance, spin, and control.  Choosing an appropriate golf ball really depends on what you are looking for in your golf game.

Are you a low handicap player looking for great spin and control?  If so, choose a balata golf ball.  This is just a softer ball that has a softer cover and allows for more spin.  This is the ball that most professionals choose.  They are also more expensive than other balls.

Perhaps you have a higher handicap and are looking for more distance and durability.  This is where a good two-piece ball will be best.  This golf ball has a harder cover which creates less backspin allowing you to hit it further.

Some golf balls are designed for slower swing speeds with a lightweight construction that catches air.  They are generally marketed for women or seniors, but plenty of men will play these balls because it gets them extra distance.

Believe it or not the weather you are playing in can make a difference in which golf ball you use.  Course conditions can also dictate golf ball choice.  Let’s say the course has been deluged with rain.  In this case, you will need a ball that will travel father and produces less spin.  If you are playing on a rock hard, sun-scorched track, choose something softer that will land soft and spin.

Look at the temperature as well.  Balls for men come in two compressions – 90 and 100.  When you hit the ball, the ball compresses.  Therefore the 90 compression ball will be softer than the 100.  If it’s cold, the ball will not compress as much so you will want to play a 90 compression golf ball.  If it’s hot out, you will want to opt for the 100 compression.

In general, two piece balls are going to give you more distance and they will be more durable so they will last longer.  Solid core golf balls will offer less trajectory and can spin for better accuracy.  Even the dimples on the ball can have an effect on your game.  Smaller dimples lessen trajectory while larger dimples increase it.

Choosing the right golf ball really is important to playing a good game.  There are many, many choices on the market.  Explore which golf ball you may want to use and then try it out.  Experiment and in time, you’ll find exactly the right golf ball for you.

The History of Golf

2011-03-16T21:27:50.987-10:00

The History of Golf

The history of golf is a debate as to whether the game was invented by the Chinese, the Dutch, or the Scottish.  A game somewhat similar to golf was first mentioned in Dongxuan Records which is a Chinese book of the Eleventh Century.  It was also mentioned in the year 1297 in the Netherlands where the Dutch played a game with a stick and a leather ball.  Whoever hit the ball in a target several hundreds of meters away the least number of times, won.

However, the Scots are generally adamant that the game of golf was a Scottish invention on St. Andrews golf course.  The name “golf” is a derivative of the Dutch word “kolf” however, so as for who really invented the game, we say who really cares!

It really doesn’t matter who actually invented the game, but what does matter is how the history of golf has evolved over the years.  Golf courses have not always had eighteen holes.  St. Andrews began with eleven holes dictated by the topography of the land the course was located on.  Players would play the eleven holes out and then back in to total 22 holes.  Later, several of the holes were deemed too short and were combined with each other.  That reduced the number from 11 down to 9 so a complete round of golf was comprised of 18 holes.

By 1744, the game of golf had become wildly popular.  So much so that a group of men called Gentlemen Golfers decided that a set of rules must be laid out for fair play.  They came up with a list of thirteen guidelines on playing the game.

Major changes since the 19th century have occurred in the equipment needed for play.  Better mowers made greens easier to play on.  Golf balls designs would evolve by using rubber and man-made materials which made the ball fly longer on a drive.  The wooden golf tee would make the drive easier.

No discussion of golf history would be complete without talking about the advances made in golf clubs.  Metal shafts came about in the 1930s and most drivers were made of wood which is why they are called woods today even though they are most commonly made these days of metal or titanium.  The golf shaft design has also gravitated towards graphite which is lighter and makes the club easier to swing.

When referring to the history of golf, we can debate exactly where the game originated, but the game of golf as we know it today, most certainly came about in Scotland.  Even if we’re wrong, we do still have this wonderful game – and most of us are very glad about that!

Golf Swing

2011-01-20T18:12:51.743-10:00

Golf Swing

The golf swing is probably one of the most frustrating parts of the game of golf.  People are constantly modifying their swing to get more distance or to correct problems like a slice or a hook.  Really, though, the golf swing is just a matter of mechanics and putting body motions together in the right way to be consistent.  But experienced golfers know this is easier said than done.  What are the basics of a good golf swing?

* Your stance should be about shoulder width apart and your feet should be pointing slightly out – but not too much!
* Let your arms hang naturally down from your body and place the club behind the ball.  If your shoulders hunch or you have tension in your arms, you are probably too close to the ball.  Stand back a little bit.
* Place about 70 percent of your body weight on your back leg.
* Straighten your spine and have a bit of bend in your knees.
* Keep your eye on the ball during your entire swing
* Grip the club as if you are holding a small, delicate bird.  You want to keep the bird in your hands, but you don’t want to crush it either.  That’s how you should hold your club.
* A good golf swing will be a fluid, easy motion with your shoulders turning slightly in the backswing and your follow-through complete.
* Make sure you keep your feet planted and slow down in your backswing.  Most problems with a golf swing are cause by swinging too quickly in the back swing and then not accelerating through the ball.
* You will want to hit the ball in the “sweet spot” or the center of the club.  Hitting it anyplace else will cause your ball to travel in directions that you really don’t want it to go in.
* Then grip it and rip it!

It might help for you to take a lesson or two on the golf swing or even watch the way the pros do it on television.  There are numerous articles that exist on the Internet that can help you with your golf swing, so always look for information and take as much advice as you can get.

Learning to swing a golf club takes years of practice as any avid golfer will tell you.  There are “a hundred” things to know and they all have to be working in exactly the right ways at exactly the right time to a have a good, consistent golf swing.  Sometimes this just doesn’t happen, but when it does, it certainly is a great feeling!

A Golf Umbrella - Great On Weddings

2010-12-29T22:27:35.898-10:00

Well, not only golferดs can have good use of a golf umbrella. I once handed one over to the bridegroom when the sky opened as they just came out of church. The reason might not be obvious to everyone but an ordinary umbrella is too small to shelter a couple. And you canดt expect a newly married couple to separate with two umbrellas. So golf umbrellas are bigger and the size is actually around 60-65 inches, which is just about 150-165 centimeters. Some a little smaller and you can also find some around 70 inches. Those are like having a tent, you are very well protected from rain. The big sizes of golf umbrellas are necessary as a golfer has to take care of a number of things and if possible also protect the golf bag.If you have watched the professional golfers playing in rain you have probably also noticed that the player use big golf umbrellas. The caddie has no umbrella and on rare occasions you can see the caddie holding the umbrella for the pro. That seem to be the only time a caddie can get out of the rain. Of course it is important to protect the player, she or he is the one making money for them both.On the first tee of a golf round up in Virginia it started to come short showers of rain. I simply had to buy a new umbrella and choose one with a dual canopy. A dual canopy has, as the name would suggest, a dual canopy design, this feature allows for any wind to blow through the umbrella while water will still run off of it.By making the top half of the bottom canopy out of a mesh material and then putting a second shell that covers the mesh and runs about two inches past the seam, the rain will not come through the vented area. This is especially important when you take into account the size of the umbrella when opened. This will easily cover you and your bag.How is that size possible without the thing weighing a ton? With a fiberglass shaft and spreaders, the umbrella is lightweight and lightning resistant. A push button opening mechanism makes it easy to open the umbrella with one hand. Most golf umbrellas Iดve had donดt use push button techniques simply because there is one more thing that can fail.A golf umbrella will keep you dry for a full round of golf. If it wasnดt for the fact that you have to hit the ball from time to time. You will also get wet from walking in the grass, not to talk about lost balls in the ruff! There are times when a player just have to find the ball himself.Golf umbrellas with the double canopy works great even when the wind pickes up a little bit. You will not fly away even it the size is really big. Some golf umbrellas now have a ergonomic handle which cut down on fatigue from carrying it. The hand stays in a natural position. Thanks to the lightweight materials used in the construction, you can carry the umbrella without having it affect your swing due to muscle fatigue. One drawback can be mentioned with the golf umbrellas in general. The the size of it, while you want to have as much of yourself and your bag covered, when closed, the umbrella will protrude a good bit from your bag when it is not being used. This can make loading and unloading the bag a little difficult from your car. When it has been in use you should not have it in your bag. The umbrella will get dry much faster if you can unfold it and just give it some time.A golf umbrella is great for anyone to use, it is large enough for two people to stay dry. The dual canopy will keep the umbrella from turning inside out in higher winds while not sacrificing any coverage.Choose your umbrella with care and you can have it for many years. The one I bought in Virgina is seven years now, still working great but the looks is not the best. I donดt care, I m on the course to play golf.[...]

Golf Shoes

2010-11-03T06:21:48.477-10:00

Golf Shoes

Many golfers don’t give much thought to their golf shoes.  After all, they’re just footwear, right?  No, that’s wrong.  Actually, your golf shoes can make the difference between a good golf swing and a great golf swing.  You will also want to pick a golf shoe that is healthy for you and your feet.  I bet you’ve never really thought about how to pick a healthy golf shoe.  Neither have I – until now.

First and foremost, take your time when shopping for golf shoes.  Put them on and walk around in them to make sure they feel good on your feet and that you can move about without any restraints or discomfort.

Feet do expand, so when you go to shop for your golf shoes, do so after walking for about 20 minutes or so.  It’s for this reason specifically that it’s better to shop for golf shoes – or any shoes for that matter – in the afternoon rather than in the morning.

When you shop for your golf shoes, you should wear the style of socks that you would normally wear on the golf course.  This way, you will know you will be comfortable on the golf course while wearing your golf shoes and not have to worry about discomfort during your backswing.

There are all types of golf shoes available these days.  No longer are you restricted to oxford-style.  Manufacturers are now making golf sandals, golf boots, and even golf shoes that really resemble tennis shoes.  The cleats on these types of shoes can be quite different so be sure that when you buy a golf shoe, it’s going to give you the results that you are looking for.

Depending on your budget, you will be able to find golf shoes in all sorts of different price ranges.  The general rule of thumb is that you should buy the best pair of golf shoes that you can possibly afford.  If you go for the cheapest pair, you will probably have to replace them within a short period of time.  However, if you can afford the extra twenty dollars, go ahead and upgrade just a bit and have them last just a bit longer.

Golf shoes may not be first and foremost on your mind when you are thinking about what you need to be a good golfer, but the right pair of golf shoes can really make a difference in your golf game.  You want to be comfortable, you want to have stability, but most of all, you want to look good – now don’t you?  Seriously, though, find a good pair of golf shoes and then put them to use on the links.  Then see how much they make a difference when you are swinging your club on the first tee!

Golf Equipment

2010-10-15T21:36:01.232-10:00

Golf EquipmentWhen it comes to golf equipment, you have a lot of choices.  There are multiple brands and styles of golf equipment that you can use, but it can be confusing as to what you really need to play a good game of golf.  Let’s take a look at some of the equipment that most golfers consider essential.Of course, your most important pieces of golf equipment are your clubs.  You will want to take care to choose clubs that are suited to your style of golf.  They should be easy to handle and designed toward your height.  Beginners and experts alike should lean towards the lighter graphite shafts and titanium heads so that you have maximum forgiveness in the event of a bad shot. You will want to have a full set of clubs.  That means you’ll need a driver, a 3 wood, a 5 wood, a full set of irons (from 3 to 9), a sand wedge, and a putter.  That’s the minimum.  You can also add other clubs to your arsenal as you become more proficient at the game.  You can include a 1 iron for fairway shots as well as a lob wedge for getting out of the deep rough. The golf ball really can be a very important piece of golf equipment.  Depending on what you are looking for, you can find balls that will improve your distance, your spin, or your performance.  Look for balls that are a bit softer – like a balata.  Also find a ball with lower compression – especially if you are a beginner. If you’ve never given thought to your golf tees as part of your golf equipment, now’s the time to start.  There are actually many types of tees that you can choose from – each with their own advantages.  There are long tees when you need to have the ball teed up high, short tees for those tee box iron shots, and even three-pronged tees for stability.  In fact, the three-pronged tee was the first type of golf tee that was used in the early years of golf.If you like the idea of carrying your clubs around in one bundle, I guess you can just go ahead.  However, a golf bag sure makes carrying your clubs around much easier.  Plus, with a good golf bag, you can also carry your tees, your balls, some hand sanitizer, snacks, your cell phone, and anything else you think is necessary.Because the golf swing requires a certain amount of stability, you will also want to add some golf shoes to your golf equipment list.  Golf shoes have cleats on the bottom that allow you to maintain your footing while swinging.  This can be so very important as you are moving your body to hit the ball.  Golf shoes help you stay balanced and keep your feet “grounded” if you will. There are definitely all sorts of golf equipment that you can buy and use when playing the wonderful game of golf.  Just don’t go overboard and concentrate on the basics to begin with.  Then when you get better, you can add all of the newest gadgets to your bag and see if that golf equipment will help you lower your score!.................................................................................................[...]

Wilson Golf

2010-09-16T13:22:50.229-10:00

Wilson Sporting Goods has long been known for supplying people with quality sports equipment.  Since 1914, Wilson has been selling basketballs, baseballs, and footballs to the general public as well as organized sports.  Wilson also recognized that golf was a very popular activity in the world and they wanted to present their unique products to the world that they felt would change the face of golf forever.
Wilson Golf knew they needed the backing of a professional golfer of the time to add credibility to their products, so they contacted one of the best.  Gene Sarazen was the first golfer to become a member of the Wilson Advisory Staff and would have a 75-year relationship with the company, the longest-running contract in sports history. His career would earn him 39 PGA titles including two U.S. Opens, three PGA Championships, a British Open title, and a Masters victory on his way into the PGA Hall of Fame in 1974.
Over the years Sarazen was joined by such golfing greats as Sam Snead, Walter Hagen, Arnold Palmer, Nick Faldo, Payne Stewart, John Daly and Vijay Singh to name a few of the Wilson Advisory Staff over the years.  This type of professional endorsement made Wilson Golf a household name.
Wilson golf was instrumental in participating in the introduction of some new concepts in the game of golf.  They provided the financial backing for Patty Berg and “Babe” Didrickson Zaharias to found the new Women’s PGA, now known as the LPGA.
Wilson Golf helped introduce the modern era of power golf with the introduction of the Wilson Staff ball, the famous ‘long ball’ that springs off the club face 40% faster than the speed of the club head. From 1954 the Wilson Staff ball has helped win more Masters and U.S. Open Championships than any other ball.
In the 1980’s, Wilson Golf’s Staff irons were #1 on Tour. The Staff Tour Blade was introduced, as well as the Staff persimmon woods with an aluminum face insert. Wilson launched another landmark golf ball – the Ultra – and advanced sales far surpass any previous ball in the company’s history.
Over the years, Wilson Golf has continued to pioneer the industry in club design as well as golf ball design.  They have introduced some amazing new golf clubs along with long range balls that can increase the distance a golfer can hit the ball.
Their use of nanotechnology in manufacture of their clubs make Wilson Golf clubs some of the lightest and most reliable in the golf industry today.  With ninety years in the business, they remain a powerhouse when it comes to golf equipment and supplies.

Ping Golf

2010-09-16T13:21:02.995-10:00

Ping Golf

For over forty years, the Ping Company has been manufacturing golf equipment that is both innovative and practical for both the casual and professional golfer.  Since 1959, Ping Golf has been dedicated to one idea:  innovation and design can produce a set of golf clubs that maximize the enjoyment of the game for all.

Karsten Solheim invented his 1-A putter, manufactured in his garage.  He named it Ping for the sound it makes when it hits the ball.  Thus, a company was born.  Solheim was frustrated with his putting game as the putters of the era didn’t give him what he felt he needed in his short game.  Once the 1-A putter hit the general market, they became so popular, Solheim quit his job at General Electric and began Ping Golf.

Solheim decided not to stop at putters and developed a set of irons dubbed “69” which he considered to be a good golf score.  Solheim continued to experiment with the effects of good heel-toe weighting in his irons and also milled a cavity into the steel back of the irons for added forgiveness.  Ping golf was growing by leaps and bound in the golf industry.

In 1966, Ping golf experienced possibly the greatest even of their company’s history.  Solheim had an idea for a new putter.  After he finalized the design – originally sketched on the dust cover of a 78 rpm record, he needed a name for the club.  His wife suggested “answer” since it would give golfers an answer to their putting problems.  It was shortened to “Anser” to fit on the club itself.

The Ping Anser would go on to be the most influential putter in golf while setting the standard for what is considered to be the conventional putter.  It has racked up 500 professional golf wins making it the “winningest” putter in golf history.  The Anser had a cavity back low center of gravity that provided superior feel for golfers of all abilities.

Ping golf faced a major obstacle at the end of 1966 as the USGA outlawed all Ping putters other than the Answer for tournament and handicapped play.  This decision was made because the USGA felt the other Ping models had a special bend in the shaft under the grip that was thought to give players a special advantage in the putting stroke.

Of course, Ping survived and went on to become a premier manufacturer of golf equipment that is widely used on the professional tours as well as by amateurs all over the world.  Ping golf has proven to be one of the powerhouses when it comes to golf equipment and it will probably remain so for a long time.

Las Vegas Golf

Las Vegas Golf

There may be a lot of things that Las Vegas is famous for, but golf isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.  However, golf in Las Vegas is becoming a sport for the well-to-do and the common man alike.
Twenty-nine years ago, locals and visitors played at The Tropicana Golf Course, which has been replaced by the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino. The Dunes course, since replaced by Bellagio and Monte Carlo Hotels, Desert Inn Country Club, is still there, though it will be gone soon. The Municipal Golf Course, Las Vegas Country Club, Craig Road, Sahara Country Club, Winter Wood, two courses at Nellis and Paradise Country Club, are all still there, though the names may have changed. They were pretty much the only courses in the valley.
Today, there are 57 golf courses in and around Las Vegas.  They're not all up and running yet as that number includes under construction and on the planning board. Also, the number includes courses within a two hour drive of Las Vegas, Mesquite, Primm, Laughlin and Pahrump.
Even so, that's a lot of golf courses for a city of less than one and a half million. Of course, thirty-six million plus tourists a year add to the profitability of opening one.  Greens fees for Las Vegas golf can be quite steep for the common man and many locals have given up local golf for just that reason.
Las Vegas golf courses were designed by the pros who also played them in tournaments every year. Palmer, Nicklaus, Chi Chi Rodriques, Johnny Miller and Fuzzy Zoeller have all designed courses there. All of the major pro tours, PGA, LPGA and the SPGA have annual tourneys here. They started to play Las Vegas in 1953.
Golf is a year-round sport in Las Vegas. Even on those forty days a year that there's some rain, you still might get 18 holes in. There are only about 5 days a year when you can't play. In the spring there may be a few days of high winds that postpone your game. On cold days in the winter, you tee off at noon. On hot days from June to September, try to get a tee time from 6-9 am, to be off the course in the afternoon. Call very early for a tee time.
You will have a lot of options when you choose to golf in Las Vegas.  But the best part about a Las Vegas golf trip?  You can always try out the blackjack tables if your golf game stinks.

Ryder Cup

Ryder Cup

The Ryder Cup is a golf trophy contest held every other year matching a team of players from Europe and a team of players from the United States.  The name of the tournament came from Samuel Ryder who had watched the first casual match of this format and though it would be good to make the match official.  He donated the first gold cup prize and they named the contest after him.  The first official Ryder Cup match was played in 1927 in Massachusetts.

Each Ryder Cup team is captained by an experienced golfer.  They will get to choose some of the golfers who will play on the team, but most of the team is chosen according to how well they have played since the last Ryder Cup.  There is a point system that is in place and their position on the team is dependent on their points.

The matches in the Ryder cup involve various match play matches.  Currently, the matches consist of eight foursome matches, eight four ball matches, and twelve singles matches.  The winner of each match scores a point for their team with ฝ point each for any match that is tied after 18 holes.

A foursome match is competition between two teams of two golfers.  The golfers on the same team take alternate shots throughout the match with the same ball.  A team takes the hole when it completes the hole with the fewest shots.

A four ball match in the Ryder Cup is also a competition between two teams of two golfers, but all four golfers play their own ball throughout the round rather than alternating shots.  Whichever golfer completes the hole with the lowest score wins the hole.

A singles match is a standard match play competition between two golfers.

Many changes have been made to the Ryder Cup over the years, but it still remains one of the most exciting and competitive tournaments in the golf world.  The next Ryder Cup competition will be held in 2008 at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky.

While teams have yet to be officially picked, we do know that the United States Ryder Cup team will be captained by Paul Azinger.  Right now, it appears we’ll probably see Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, and Davis Love III as team members based on their points they have accumulated.

The European Ryder Cup team will be captained by Nick Faldo.  Expect to see names like Colin Montgomerie, Sergio Garcia, and Luke Donald as probably team members.

Golf Score

Golf Score

When you are playing the great game of golf, your golf scores become both your best friends as well as your worst enemies.  Many players live by their golf scores and judge their progress according to what the score card says.  While you might think that your golf scores are the best gauge of how you are coming along as a golfer, that isn’t necessarily the case.

The way golf scores are tallied can mean so many things.  Just because you shoot an 8 on a par 4 doesn’t necessarily mean you are a bad golfer.  It might mean that you had a bad drive and a mis-aimed chip – but it doesn’t make you a bad golfer.  So don’t put too much stock into what the scorecard says.  Judge your golf game by how you play rather than what your scores are.

Golf scores are only meant to help you keep track of the strokes you take to get from tee box to the hole.  They don’t ever take into consideration things like hazards, weather conditions, or anxiety.  Sure, you can’t keep track of how you are doing without paying attention to your golf scores, but you still need to keep in mind that there are a million variables that can make your score fluctuate.

Of course, if you’re a golfer, you know all the terminology – birdie, eagle, bogey, double eagle (if you’re really lucky) – but the real story in golf scores lies in how you played the course and navigated the hole.  Instead of keeping track of scores, why don’t you keep track of where you were for a particular shot and how that shot came out?

Let’s say, you make a horrible drive on a par 4 and only end up 100 yards off the tee box.  Let’s hope it’s past the women’s tee – if you know what I mean!  So now you are faced with a long fairway shot.  You pick up your favorite club and smack a beautiful flyer right on the green.  Who’s going to say that wasn’t a good golf shot?  You end up with a par on the hole, but your score doesn’t really reflect that amazing shot now does it?

The point is, don’t put too much emphasis on the amount of strokes on your scorecard.  Think about your golf score as a reflection of the amazing shots you’ve made as well as the flubbers you’ve had to live through as well.  Then you can find out what kind of a golfer you are and not have to live by the golf score alone.

Golf Bags for Beginner Golfers

Golf Bags for Beginner Golfers

You might be a golf beginner looking for your first set of golf clubs and equipment or a pro shopping for upgrades, but all will agree that golf bags are essential in the game. Next to golf clubs, a golf bag is one of the most important golfing equipment there is.

It is considered a necessity. A good golf bag will lessen your worries on the golf course, (i.e. all your clubs are in their proper place) and you can focus on your teeing.

If you're a beginner golfer, then golf bags are definitely a must. However, there are things that you should know before going to the nearest golf store and buying a golf bag on impulse. First, there are two types of golf bags? carry bags and cart bags.

Carry bags are golf bags that are used when you are planning to have a lot of walking on the golf course. Cart golf bags are those that you use when walking is not possible (as some golf courses prohibit walking), and riding a golf cart is your option. A beginner golfer will most definitely buy a walking bag at first, although if you are a serious beginner of the game, then you will eventually buy both types of golf bags.

If you are a newbie in the game, you might ask "What is a golf bag for? I only have four golf clubs." A golf bag is a functional equipment rather than a fashion statement. It is not just for your golf clubs, but it can also hold your other golf equipment and accessories. Some advanced golf bags even have pocket coolers that can keep your drink ice-cold even for hours! You might want to consider that, especially when you will buy a carry golf bag.

When buying a golf bag, especially a carry golf bag, find a comfortable one. One should check the straps to see if it fits comfortably and whether it can be carried easily. Remember that your golf bag will be one of your trusted companions on the greens, and that you will spend hours with it. So choose wisely. Don't buy low quality bags, because you will end up purchasing another bag in the next few months if your old golf bag tears up. You should also buy your golf bag depending on the number of golf clubs that you have. Most golf bags can carry up to 15 golf clubs. A tournament however limits the number of golf clubs in your golf bag.

Another important thing to consider when purchasing a golf bag is its weight. This is one of the most important things to know. Golf bags should be light enough to be carried or carted easily, but sturdy enough to hold your clubs and protect them. Some golf bags are even water resistant, and are rain proofed for the protection of your clubs. Most of these golf bags have 8 or 9 dividers or pockets. Again, the number of dividers that you will need depend on the amount of clubs and accessories you will carry. If you have many golf clubs then choose a golf bag with many dividers. However, these types of golf bags have the tendency to be heavier. Some bags can weigh less than 5 pounds! These types of bags are made up of space-age materials such as graphite, however, they more expensive.

Remember that when buying golf bags, the lighter it is, the better and more comfortable it will be.

Golf Tips Involving Golf Equipment

2010-06-02T17:22:17.170-10:00

Golf Tips Involving Golf EquipmentBlaming your moves, shots and swings for your golf mishits and mishaps? Well, no matter how much time and effort you have been spending over practicing your moves to perfect your game, you still won't achieve your goal if you use unsuitable or defective types of golf equipment, will you?Now is high time for you to consider the following golf tips that involve checking on your equipment's quality. If you plan to choose used golfclubs as beginner's tools, scrutinizing before purchasing is a must. The clubheads, the shafts, and the grips are golfclub parts that should pass inspection first before landing a decent spot in your golf equipment cabinet. Another excellent golf tip that will get you through the game is making sure that the set of used golfclubs you're eyeing have set consistency. It will also help a lot if you check first the price of new clubs vs. used. A golf tip for a golfer that plans to regrip his clubs: Be cautious. This is because the grips are the only contact points one can access to affect the shot. Before carrying out the regripping, know the core grip of the club and your hands grip size. To determine your core size grip, measure the diameter of the butt of the shaft you're going to re-grip. The shaft's diameter should match the grip's core diameter. In determining your hands grip, the available size grips are regular, mid-size, oversize and jumbo. Use only the best re-gripping materials that will provide optimum performance for your golf clubs.Another golf tip or advice is that using ill-fitted clubs will be an obstacle to your golf playing success. A golfer must consider his or her body type in choosing the best-fitting equipment to support and deliver his backswings efficiently. Too steep angles in carrying out backswings may be avoided if one selects the perfect fitting equipment available.Custom golfclub fitting makes a better option than just buying new golf clubs. Getting custom fitting golfclubs is a golf tip that translates to a very worthy investment. The uniqueness of each person is attributed to the need of this way of buying new golf clubs. A custom fitting produces golfclubs that specifically suit the height, strength, swing characteristics and clubhead speed of the golfer. The type of club shaft also helps in predicting whether you'll do good in a game or you won't. There's a choice between a steel club shaft and a graphite-made club shaft. This golf tip aims to make you realize which type of golfclub shaft will benefit your game. Observations tell that the steel club shafts are more preferred by professional golfers while graphite shafts become more popular with women, senior players and beginners. Steel shafts are less expensive than graphite shafts though. One more golf tip that could help you is that the golf clubs that must be the main content of your bag must suit your skill level. Since various skill levels need various golf clubs, it won't be wise to just use or bring a golf club that is just lying around. And, don't ever forget about the maximum golfclub load your bag is allowed to hold. You can only bring 14 golf clubs in your bag. No more. No less. Aside from your skill level contemplation, your mastery of a certain golfclub and your being comfortable with using it must also be put into consideration in deciding which golfclub to hit.A good combination of the right moves and good choice of equipment will better arm you to become the best golfer you could ever be.[...]

Custom Golf Club: Custom fitting golf clubs

2010-05-08T02:22:02.293-10:00

Every golfer's physical capability and swing is distinctive. Many of today's best golf clubs can be custom fit for lie angle, shaft type and length, grip type and size. Custom fitting golf clubs involves several easy measurements and a quick self-assessment of your game. This custom golf club has become more than a fad that even not so professional golfers test its waters.Custom fitting is the process for tailoring a golf club to suit your personal swing. Whatever your level, with a custom golf club the aim is to ensure that if you do make a good swing, the club will be square at impact and should produce a straight shot. Custom Golf Club How To's:To custom fit your golf clubs, you need to know: your gender (male or female); your height in your stockings or socks; the distance from your wrist (where it bends) to the floor with your shoes off; your age; your handicap or skill level; how fast you swing a golf club; what club you use at the 150 yard marker.Gender is used to put you into the correct fitting scale for custom golf clubs. The golf industry uses different definitions of "standard length" for men and women. Your height and the distance in inches from your wrist to the floor are used together to determine the length of a custom golf club that is appropriate for you. The starting point for club length can vary up to 3 ฝ-inch ranging from ladies to men plus 1 ฝ-inch. A tall person with long arms can very easily require shorter clubs than an average height person with short arms. About 80 percent of golfers are standard length. Your age, handicap (if you happen to have one), self-assessed skill level, estimated golf swing speed and club you use at the 150 yard marker are all combined to determined the custom golf club's shaft flex that is appropriate for you.Custom fitting can fix your slice. If you slice the ball it means that the toe of the club is leading into the ball which opens the face of the club. That may be down to a swing fault, but it could be because the club is too flat. So as part of the custom fitting process you can make the custom golf club more upright to help with this. This will mean that the toe of the club will be slightly off the ground at address to compensate. There are different methods of fitting according to custom golf club manufacturers but ultimately they are all trying to improve your game. To begin with simple measurements such as wrist-to-floor, height and hand size are taken and will point you to the right size club and at what angle it should be to the ground. Then you will take a club and hit some balls. One method is to place impact tape on the bottom of the custom golf club and an impact board on the floor. As you hit the ball the board will leave a mark on the tape showing whether the heel or the toe of the custom golf club is striking the floor first. The resulting mark will show whether the club face needs to be flatter or more upright. Then things get a bit more advanced. Analysis equipment can measure everything from your club speed to the side spin of the ball so that you can get maximum distance from your shot. You can also measure the launch angle of the ball, how much backspin you generate and impact efficiency - all which affect distance. The angle in which the custom golf club approaches the ball and the sidespin of it can help fix your game too.Rather than bringing down your old clubs, it might be better to start from scratch. It's a big misconception that custom fitting is only for good golfers. Anyone can benefit. That said, if you plan to upgrade a new set of clubs with the same[...]

Where You Can Buy Useful Golf Accessories

Where You Can Buy Useful Golf Accessories

There are many different golf accessories that can make the sport more enjoyable for you. These range from cases to protect your clubs, to small handheld score calculating computers. If you have a product in mind, you can probably find it at your local golf club store. However, sometime local golf stores won’t have as big of an inventory as you would like to browse, or they simply don’t carry the item at all. If this is the case, then you will have to look elsewhere for your desired golfing accessory. There are several things you can do to track down what you want.

First of all, you should monitor classified ads in as many resources as you can. The internet offers many different places for people to post their ads, on sites like CraigsList.com. Keep an eye out on these sites for anyone with the product that you want, so that you can immediately call them up and get the first dibs. Local newspapers are good as well, and also offer yard sale advertisements that might lead you to finding what you need. If you head to the right parts of town for yard sales, you will find quite a few people who are looking to unload their old golf equipment. As long as what you want isn’t too modern, you might be able to find it.

You can also look on sites that are meant to sell the items online. EBay is the one that comes to mind first for most people, and this is a very good place to look. EBay is one of the biggest repositories of all things old and no longer widely available. However, there are also quite a few online golf accessory stores that may offer what you need. The bigger stores are generally more reliable and more trustworthy than the average eBay seller, and they also sell new items. As long as you are sure that you are getting a quality item and not some cheap version that will break right away, these sites are very good to check out. Your favorite search engine will quickly lead you to an abundance of them.

Your fellow golfers are another great resource when it comes to getting useful golf accessories. Golfers tend to go through more accessories than players of any other sport, so you can usually count on some of your golfing buddies to have some old items that they wouldn’t mind parting with. You can offer a percentage of the retail value, or you can simply ask for it for free. Usually golfers will understand the compulsion to accessorize, and will not mind hooking up someone who is an ally. Take advantage of this camaraderie if you can, and avoid making unnecessary trips to the golf store to buy overpriced accessories.

If you try all of these different resources, you are almost guaranteed to find what you need. Just remember to be thrifty when it comes to golf equipment. Even if you feel like you can afford it, you still don’t want to get too free with your wallet and start tossing checks everywhere for all kinds of equipment. This is a good way to waste huge amounts of money without having much to show for it in the end except for a bunch of accessories that you might not use very much.

However, once you grow accustomed to internet shopping you will probably find that in general the prices are cheaper. If you are on the internet and can’t find any good e-commerce sites to buy from, you can look in other alternative shopping areas that may allow you to find what you really need.
