Oh well, I guess I'm the sixth one. But I still want to answer this question so yeah!

For some reason, my answer is different from my other classmates. I think it is 1/6 . Because for mine, 6 equal horizontal pieces could fit in the big rectangle. Since there is just one gray rectangle in the middle you just have to move it either to the right or to the left you could still fit one more horizontal rectangle.

I think it can't be 1/5 because I tried it in paint and it didn't work because the gray piece is to short when you rotate it vertically.
Well I could be wrong.

well i want to answer the question and i think that my classmates are right...it is 1/5..if you move the gray shaded area into the side you can easily find what's the fraction of the rectangle..after you put the gray shaded area into either both sides..with all the spaces left part it like the same size of the gray shaded area...

I think that the shaded area is equal to 1/5. I say this becuse if it is turned the shaded area sideways, there would be 5 equal pieces. Or you could keep the shaded rectangle in the same place and put 4 equal pieces around it. If you look at it, the pieces equal 2/10. 2/10 simplified is 1/5

I also agree with my classmates maxine and marielle. I estimate that 1/5 of the rectangle was shaded. I estimate 1/5 because I saved the picture and tested it out on paint. I figured out that about 5 of the gray rectangles can fit into the whole rectangle.

I'm gonna say that 1/5 is shaded in because 5 of those rectangles can fit into that big rectangle. It could also be 2/10 or 4/20 etc. if you want to give other names to it.
