Your TripAdvisor scores are dropping with guest complaints skewing increasingly towards facilities and maintenance rather than service. Or say you just received a conditional score on your annual inspection. It can even be as obvious as the faded green floral wallpaper that used to match the emerald porcelain tiles or the white shag carpeting now sporting various shades of gray.

It is an institution whose reputation looms large in the imagination of so many more people than can ever have visited it, let alone been members. When tire tycoon Harvey Firestone first had the idea of a new type of social club, on board his yacht the Marybelle, he could never have imagined how enduring the appeal would be of what he would soon create.

Swiss Hotel Chain Mövenpick Uses Cloud To Avoid 'Cemetery Of Brands' | forbes.comSwiss Hotel Chain Mövenpick Uses Cloud To Avoid 'Cemetery Of Brands' |

Fri, 24 Mar 2017 12:49:17

(image) Mövenpick is hoping to escape what its CEO Olivier Chavy called the “cemetery of brands” during a presentation at Oracle Industry Connect here this morning. Profit margins in the hotel industry are between 1% and 2%, and are being squeezed by a combination of macroeconomic and industry-specific factors, such as a changing distributor landscape, tighter management agreements, and higher capital requirements for borrowing. But according to Chavy, hotel operators are under greater threat from organizations like Uber and Facebook, which can leverage platforms to create experiences. He noted that Uber is the world’s largest taxi company yet owns no taxis; Airbnb is the world’s largest hotel company yet owns no real estate. And he sounded a note of alarm, claiming that many in the hotel industry are evolving too slowly to survive. “In the hospitality industry, we are in the age of stone,” he said.

(image) Imagine you can search for hotel rooms by how they look, or if they have a great view, or a canopy bed, or... That would totally disrupt the way we do it now: first figure out what you want to do where and when, then see if you can find a hotel there. A tedious affair.. Why not turn this around and start with: 'I want a beach view and an outdoor bathroom', and take it from there? That would make it a pleasant experience. Now there finally is a way to do this:

Young Hoteliers Summit 2017 Thoroughly Inspiring And ImpactfulYoung Hoteliers Summit 2017 Thoroughly Inspiring And Impactful

Fri, 24 Mar 2017 11:45:40

(image) Tackling the challenge of conventionalism within the hospitality industry was the central theme of the 8th edition of YHS. Influential industry professionals assessed this trending topic in order to provide their views and opinions on what the future of hospitality is offering. Subjects addressed during the summit ranged from how user-generated social media content enhances branding, to how loyalty within the luxury segment is perceived and achieved. As well, questions such as how ownership types affect the flexibility to become more sustainable and how new and innovative business models disrupt the industry were discussed and recommendations given. The aim of YHS is to bring hospitality management students and industry leaders together, to create a collaborative community for exchange of industry insights. 81 students representing 42 partner schools from 19 countries were invited and attended the summit. Further challenging their thinking, the participants from the various educational institutions were invited to take on the YHS Challenge hosted by The Student Hotel, an innovative hybrid lodging concept merging various types of customer segments. The provider of the challenge changes every year and asks the attendees to come up with new ideas of business practices. Within small teams and limited time resources, the students evaluate, assess and present the project to a jury of industry professionals. After a successful 8th edition of YHS, the organisation committee extends its thanks to all partners, guest speakers and visitors and is excited for what the Young Hoteliers Summit 2018 has to offer.

How Monscierge is Killing the CheeseplateHow Monscierge is Killing the Cheeseplate

Fri, 24 Mar 2017 10:48:10

(image) When Monscierge first began our journey, we spent several days working in the back-of-house with staff at a well-known hotel in downtown Oklahoma City. Their team talked with us about their passion for our industry, their love for their guests, and the challenges they face every day. I asked one of the bell staff "If you could change one thing about the operation of your hotel, what would it be?" Without hesitation he said "I'd kill the cheeseplate. Every day I deliver complimentary cheeseplates as welcome gifts to our VIP guests, and every day I'm the guy that later discards most of all of them – totally untouched. If I could tailor the welcome gifts to something each guest truly valued, they would feel cared for, I would feel more invested in the people I'm caring for each day and we'd reduce significant waste at the hotel. Everyone wins."
