Interest in C3C GotMs

Sun, 01 Jul 2007 05:23:12 GMT

Guys,

After May's GotM having no takers, I would like to use this thread as a discussion for if there is any more interest in me posting more games.

Now the games have (almost) 2 month deadlines, I cannot see lack of time being an issue, therefore I must assume lack of interest, now that Civ3 is getting on in years.

Please let me know your thoughts

Dave

1BC Official C3C GOTM - February 2008

Thu, 24 Jan 2008 13:42:32 GMT

Closed: Champion: rgndvo

Here we go, fellas! Now I want a nice clean game here with no hits below the belt...

Submissions are due by 11:59pm Eastern US time on Feb. 29th. Good luck, all!

Monarch difficulty with more aggressive AI (I find this makes it slightly more challenging)
Standard size world
Random world shape/water distribution
Roaming Barbarians
world seed: mccain4prz :D (first thing that popped into my mind)
average climates and world age
All default victory conditions
Allow cultural conversions
Allow Scientific leaders

We are Lincoln of the Americans. Here is our start position - may you use it well.

And here is the save, may it bring you enjoyment!

Successful submissions thus far:
Rgndvo the Lionhearted. 2513 points, Domination in 1944

C3C GotMs for 2008 onwards

Mon, 21 Jan 2008 01:53:09 GMT

Guys,

You may or may not have noticed I have held off posting a new C3C GotM recently.

(Well, since it's now the 21st and no-one has posted about it, I assumed no-one has noticed) :P

I would be interested to hear if there is any demand for another game.

I'm open to ideas - shall I run a longer game - e.g. quarterly - or is everyone onto Civ4 now and not really interested anymore.

I'd like at least 3-4 people to express serious interest else there's not much point really.

Otherwise, I'd like to thank everyone who has played the games I've put up over the last 18 months or so, hope you enjoyed them :)

Cheers,
Dave

----

Monarch Level
Conquests V1.22

From Scip's posts:
We should have some sort of C3C "Government Challenge" similar to the "Pacifist Challenge" that we had a long time ago! I suppose the simplest format would be:

Generate a random map and random civ, everything all COMPLTELY random, except difficulty, which I'd say Monarch would be the best test.

Have each player pledge to one of two paths: (a) early republic; vs (b) early monarchy. Basically with (a) you would agree to NEVER switch to Monarchy, and with (b) you would agree to never switch to Republic. The rest of them could be flex.

The "repmontest" match. Monarchy difficulty. Map seed "repmontest," default rules (all victory conditions except Wonder turned off, and allow cultu conversion and sci leaders is on). All civs random, and everything else (including barbs) random.

My intent with that repmontest map was that some guys would adhere to Republic and whatever other govt they wanted (though never Monarch) and some guys would adhere to Monarchy and whatever other govt they wanted (though never Republic). If you had 3 guys playing each govt commitment, then you'd get an interesting test of Republic vs. Monarchy. If you have different maps, it would not necessarily be a reasonable test because, the one for Monarchy might have few luxuries for the human, but if the one for Republic was virtually identical EXCEPT for two or three luxuries for the human, it could make a VERY big difference in the early game. The idea I had in mind was to tabulate the finish times, victory types, scores, etc., for each of the guys that finished it, and see what the central values were for Republic and Monarchy. Even if there were only two guys each playing one of the govt it would still be a better test than having everyone play one map as Mon and one map as Rep.
So in summary (pending confirmation by Scip):

 • With this game choose the path of (a) early republic or (b) early monarchy. You must decide this as you start the game.
 • With option (a), you must never switch to Monarchy.
 • With option (b), you must never switch to Republic.
 • Choosing any other government type is up to you, although it is envisaged you will probably stick with your government of choice as much as possible once you have researched it.

I have given a long deadline on this one, in case it takes some time to drum up interest.

C3C GotMs - Moving Forward

Fri, 02 Mar 2007 08:11:00 GMT

Hey Guys,

I've noticed lately there has been a smaller amount of interest in the C3C GotMs. I've started this thread so we can hopefully discuss how to move forward to make the challenges more interesting and/or promote more members submitting attempts each month.

I appreciate people have been busy/away of late, so that plays a factor.

I would especially like to hear from the members who have taken part in the GotMs so far - especially Scip, Zone, and PSweet, who try and make an attempt every month.

Some thoughts that could promote more interest:

 • Make each challenge have a 2-month time limit, to give more time for attempts. This would mean only 6 games per year.
 • Make the map size smaller, for shorter games
 • Member submitted maps
 • More scenarios (although this is a bit skewed towards people who have already played them)
 • Special challenges (like Scip's "Pacifist Challenge" from a while back).

I will not be starting a March GotM until we've had some discussion on this. Hence the next GotM may be an extended March/April version to give time for submissions.

Cheers,

Dave

Final Results:

1.) Scipio Africanus: March 1943, VPs: 42910, HoF: 51492
Monarch Level
Conquests V1.22

Scenario: WAR IN THE PACIFIC

Emperor GotM200702 of the Japanese

Normal AI aggression

To complete the scenario, you need:

a.) 40000 VPs

OR

b.) 66% world area and 46% world population

The winner of this GotM will be determined by either:

a.) If no player completes the scenario before time runs out, the winner will be submission with the highest Victory Points when time runs out (50 turns)

OR

b.) If a player completes the scenario before time runs out, then the player with the earliest completion (in turns) will win.

Additional Rule:

Since some players may be at an advantage here, having played this scenario before, I will allow players to submit multiple attempts if they wish, rather than just their first attempt. This will allow you some practice if you desire.

Load/Save cheating is still frowned upon, however, and we rely on your honesty as always.

Addit #2: If two players tie for the same date, I will then compare final VPs, and finally what the Hall of fame shows. I believe the HoF score is a normalised value, based on difficultly level. Since we are all playing on Monarch, I don't think this will make a big difference.

Poll for February 2007 C3C GOTM

Sun, 21 Jan 2007 00:17:40 GMT

Hey Guys,

Scip raised an interesting point in the Jan 2007 GotM thread. I thought I'd make a poll to see how people would like to proceed.
Scip
I'm sad to say it but, I think this might be my last C3C Epic game for quite some time. I've just played this game way too much. I've seen it all, and everything past about early middle ages is tedium.

One thing I will continue to participate in (if folks will do it) are one of two things: (a) scenario challenges, or (b) PBEM tournaments.

By (a) I mean something like: play the War in the Pacific C3C scenario within one-month (it is only 50 turns, so it should be easy to do in one month) with standard GOTM rules on hardest possible difficulty, and see who gets the highest score (or one of the other scenarios if you prefer).

By (b) I mean: pick a set of pre-existing maps that are designed for PBEM (I have a few, but there are likely plenty more available) and have a C3C PBEM tournament using only those half-dozen or 9 maps (each with say 3 or 4 players?).
I'm willing to host a GotM for whatever is preferred. In my opinion it might be fun to have a scenario GotM for once - perhaps War in the Pacific as Scip suggests.

Let me know your thoughts. After all these games are for everyone's enjoyment! :)

Other than that... anyone have any suggestions/opinions??!

Suggestions for September 2006 GOTM

Sat, 26 Aug 2006 01:09:34 GMT

As with last month, I'm on the lookout for feedback and/or suggestions on how I can make the C3C GOTMs as interesting as possible for everyone.

My current thoughts for a September GOTM:

 • Monarch Level
 • Standard Size
 • Conquest Victory ON, but Domination OFF
 • Cultural ON, Space Race ON, Diplomatic OFF
 • Still to decide on Civ and AI opponents

Let me know if this sounds ok, or if you have any feedback in general about the C3C GOTMs so far.

Cheers,

Dave

Suggestions for August 2006 GOTM

Sun, 23 Jul 2006 10:16:09 GMT

Hello Hello Hello :)

Well, we've had 2 GotMs now for Civ3, and I just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or feedback regarding how things have been running so far, and/or any requests for the future. I am running these GotMs for the benefit of 1BC members, so anything that makes life easier for you then please let me know :)

The August GotM will be starting up in about a week or so, and I thought I would put out some of my thoughts/suggestions before creating the game.

Game Level:
Is everyone happy with Regent? Shall I crank up the difficulty to Monarch?

Land Type:
We've had Continents and Pangaea, I think this month I'll make an islands map.

Victory Type:
This time I am thinking of turning off Conquest and Domination victories, to give this game a more Diplomatic, Scientific and Cultural bent.

Civ:
I haven't chosen a civ yet but I might pick a seafaring one to help with the island map.

That's all I can think of for now. Feel free to pass along any feedback. If you want to discuss privately feel free to PM me.

Cheers,
Dave :)

Suggestions for C3C GOTM Map?

Sun, 02 Jul 2006 06:54:15 GMT

Some of us would like to carry on with C3C GOTMs. The only problem are random maps.

It is an almost given that you will face either: (a) little real challenge at any point in a game, resulting in a slow, and tedious chore of finishing it out during the latter stage of the game; (b) an almost overwhelming challenge early on, followed by an exponentially decreasing challenge as you progress; and/or (c) little challenge early on followed by an almost overwhelming challenge later. While the game system inherent limits the degree to which these issues can be circumvented, even in a well-planned map, at least the chances are BETTER with a human made map than with a random map.

You guys tell me what parameters you want, I'll make a non-random map that should keep things more interesting throughout. I won't be a contestant in the GOTM, but I'll just take praise and small monetary donations as the GOTM map designer.

Planet Size; Climate; Temperature; Age; Number of Civs; Barb settings; Land Mass Type, etc.

Also if there is anyone else who is interested in working with me (either teaching me their tricks or learning mine) on making a really fun GOTM map, I'd be happy to work with as many other map contributors as are interested (given sufficient time).

Last Updated 30-Sep-2006

Greetings :)

This thread contains information regarding the 1BC Civ3 GOTMs. These will be run in a similar style to the un-official ones I have run in the past.

The added bonus will be that, since these games are run officially by 1BC, there will be kudos and recognition for the winners of the games.

This info will most likely be updated over time...

Dave's Walkthrough Game!

Ok, as promised a while back, I have dusted off Civ3 and thought I'd fire up a game as a walkthrough. I will probably play the game in chunks of 20 turns, and give some detail to my actions and decisions.

ADDIT: Note that this is an unofficial GOTM, created to serve as an example to others.

Please find the saved game attached with this post.

Any interest in a Civ3 Walkthrough game?

Tue, 11 Apr 2006 04:57:34 GMT

Hi Everyone,

In the next few weeks I'm considering dusting off my Civ3 Conquests disc and playing another game or two.

I was wondering if there was any interesting in me making it a GOTM? My plan is to keep detailed track of the game, so it may take longer than a month to play! I will include screenshots and notes on my decisions and why I took them.

I plan to make it either a Regent or Monarch game, just because it will be accessible to most people.

If anyone's interested, when I start playing again (Probs in May) I'll create a new thread to keep track of the game.

Cheers,

Dave

Jan 2006 C3C GOTM

Sun, 01 Jan 2006 06:02:34 GMT

Attached is a zipped save game that Scipio sent me. Thought it would be a good idea to post up here as a GOTM, in case anyone is interested.

All victory conditions on - including wonder victory.
Huge Map Size - hence 160000 culture required for culture victory.
Monarch Difficulty
AI set to more aggressive
14 AI Rivals.

I don't normally play huge maps, so I'm not sure if I will have the time to play this one and do a detailed run through.

Happy playing! :)

November C3C GOTM

Wed, 02 Nov 2005 09:18:04 GMT

Still waiting to git my itchy fingers on Civ 4 . . . grumble, grumble, grumble . . .

So I start up a totally random epic Emperor level game last night, and I think it just might be THE best random start I've ever got.

Scandinavia, with 2 coast, 3-4 plains, 3 hills and a nearby forest, and a Three cows in the plains. Talk about a power house start!!

If you've never won an Emperor Level random Epic game, here's your last chance before you get sucked into Civ 4 for the rest of your life and relegate Civ 3 to the museum of antitiquities :)

Now if a moderator can just give me access to load an attachment.

Civ 4 GOTM

Mon, 21 Nov 2005 09:17:24 GMT

On Board?

I think we shouldnt make it any more difficult than Noble otherwise Im easy for the parameters ... On that note, can we make it like the old days of GOTM's with the separate board w/pics high score board etc???

Anyway ... whos on board, and if so what do you like?

Anyone for an October GotM?

Tue, 11 Oct 2005 09:53:41 GMT

Hey Everyone,

I've been thinking, with the onset of Civ4, it's about time I took a stab at an Emperor level game.

I've been pretty successful with Monarch level, and thought it's about time I take the plunge, before Christmas and all those kind of distractions!

So, I was thinking about making an Emperor level game.

Anyone interested? I'll post up a starting save in the new few days.

It will most likely be Standard Size, 7 AI Civs, All Victory Types except Diplo and Wonder, standard production.

Not sure on which Civ to choose yet either, although am leaning towards a religious one.

GOTM files?

Thu, 20 Oct 2005 09:06:54 GMT

I have not been active at this forum for awhile. But now when i started to play C3C again I want to try the GOTM...To compare my score against others to see what I need to practice on (again!).

Right now I'm not interested in the most difficult levels, first three (cant remember the names) are enough for now.

Where can I find the files or are they removed?

Need a third party to create game

Fri, 14 Oct 2005 20:18:09 GMT

Over at civilized, Ness, Skulldent, Zone and I want to have a PBEM with locked alliances so to set it up, we will need someone else to set it up. Go here for the specifics. Anyone up for it?

Monarch Level Game of the Month for August 2005

Mon, 15 Aug 2005 15:42:44 GMT

I had'nt played C3C for weeks, maybe months. But some of ya'lls posts about beating Diety, etc., led me to get my CD out and brush off the dust over the weekend . . . First attempt on Emperor: played up to about 1AD: half an era behind, no iron, no horses, and surrounded by mean AI. Okay, now I remember why I always played on Monarch . . .Take two: Monarch level, thought I'd try a theme of sorts, Iroquis (Commercial Agriculture) against all Industrious civs (non-Commercial) on a standard map (only 7 total civs instead of 9 possible slots I think). Again, no iron, no horses, plenty of luxuries, and the Persians by 1AD or thereabouts closing in with their cavalry and riflemen, meanwhile I just got muskets . . . nah, that'll be boring to finish out too . . .Take three, Ottomans, Monarch, against all Agricultural AI opponents (none with same traits as Ottomans) . . . One of those stupid random maps with huge chunks of useless marsh, and odd-shaped isthmuses, and crap. Nah, that'll drag on forever and only be challenging in being tedious.Take four, Carthage (maybe I'll try an industrious seafaring civ against all non-industrious, civs and mostly non-seafaring except Spain). Set the map in hopes of having a "New World" empty of civs to be colonized after ocean-going travel discovered (i.e., only 5 civs on a standard random map, temperate, 5byo, sedentary barbs, all victory conditions on, assimilate on, culturally-linked start on, sci great leaders on, normal aggress, 80% continents). Think it was Rome, Spain, Celts and Egypt. Still no sign of Celts nor Egypt, so they're probably on a separate landmass, sprawling out into giant civilizations . . . dang stupid random map generator. So, played this one last night, and it appears to be a pretty decent map. May play it out to finish. When I last played it, I was up to about 100 BC or so, and the war with Rome was going pretty well.

Share a late game save file?

Tue, 31 May 2005 22:26:23 GMT

I'm kinda curious to see what other players games look like in the later era (Start of modern era?). A few things I'm interested in seeing...Govenor settings# of workers and automated statusDiplomatic relations and tradeEspionageTech relation to other civs (are you advanced?)Luxury / tax / science ratiosCity advancement (how many buildings in a city)City garrisonI'm curious how other players late games look like so I can get some new ideas as to play styles. Anyone interested in sharing a save? I'll post my most recent (still unfinished)... Japanese, emporer, mod rules (no bonus units).Feel free to peak at mine if you wish, but I'd much prefer if you shared your own. Email if you want.Addit : Conquests version 1.22
