The San Juan Islands are still here--a throw back to a quieter time. Barter is a prefered method of exchange on Lopez and the Organic, Buy Fresh, Buy Local movement has taken over the farms. Prices are high, but the products are there. Over 20 farms now sell goods statewide. The islands even have a mobile abitoir which comes with a USDA inspector when it visits the farm for slaughter.

Oh how I wish I had space for piglets this year. Plenty of room for more chickens--layers and eaters--but the nature of the islands is changing. The pasture land where we once grazed Wallace & Gromit our cows was taken away by a new owner who didn't "want the mess". And our pork rearing wood has been let to llama collectors. I visit our neighbors farm and chuck their pigs--all claimed before we could get a hand in--a treat once a week.

However I think 2006 will be the year of the pig and I, for one, am determined to cook and eat as much quality pork as I can for self and others.
