There are very few versions of Linux where the server is actually free. Unless you mean you don't care about guaranteed support levels. The cost of free Linux is you own all the support yourself. Good luck passing HIPAA, or CPI audit with a unsupported OS.

That's all very good, but who wants to pay all that hard earned money for Windows server? What about using a free Linux alternative, such as Ubuntu Server? I think some guidance on this subject would be usefull, as I can't see many home network owners spending the money on Windows Server. It's a pretty easy thing to set up these days.

Very well explained. I'm often asked questions if someone needs a server or not. I will refer them to this post from now on. Thanks, again for such a great post.
